    Exactly what I wanted to know. I'm just polishing up an old aluminum shifter for my car and needed some reference. You did it concisely and to the point (didn't take 20 minutes just to talk about what you were going to do in the video lol). Idk if this is weird, but you also have a comforting voice lol. Thanks.

    Any thoughts on what speed you'd want with a variable speed random orbital polisher? Too fast leaves burns up the alumicut and causes it to goo up, so slow and not enough cutting power? Great video!

    Hiya, are you using a specific type of sand paper for aluminum? Am I correct in thinking that you wouldn't switch between sand paper that had been used on any other metals? Thanks so much and well done!

    • @b0zz1380y
      @b0zz1380y Рік тому

      Never use paper that has been used on a dissimilar material. Always have dedicated wheels/discs/brushes etc for each material. Not doing so can ruin the finish (carbon steel on stainless will cause the stainless to rust) and similar to ally.

    Use a DA (dual action) sander if you have air, $30 Walmart. electric orbital if no air. Step up grits with 6” psa sanding discs.
    This leaves no visible variations or patterns from a tool and your hand.
    Don’t do this in the sun, keep your work cool.
    Friction creates heat, heat expands metal, heat on one side distorts the reflected image

    Holy crap I didn't know it was possible to get aluminum that polished. It's more reflective than a mirror. Great job. How long does the protective coating you applied last? Is it more of a wax that needs to be reapplied and is there something you would recommend that might last longer. For example clear coating it with clear spray paint or something like that?

    Do you have any idea why this happened - I have an old handheld 12 volt spotlight with a parabolic reflector. While I had the light disassembled, I took some polish in a bottle to the reflector. I only wiped it on with my index finger but it totally stripped that mirror finish off. I tried to polish it back but it just won't. The surface is glossy smooth but is dull. I'm at a loss. What kind of coating was on this reflector giving it that mirror finish that a simple polish in a bottle was able to remove? I'm confused what happened exactly.

  • @exploranator
    @exploranator Місяць тому

    BRO. What if you went nuts and sanded it with 10,000 grit (if such exists) then did an optical-grade polish on it next?
    It would look like a portal to an alternate dimension, because aluminum is among the most reflective metals on Earth.

    • @SkillsandTrade
      @SkillsandTrade  Місяць тому

      Yeah, that is a great idea. I was thinking of using a 1100 grade 99% pure aluminum next time. I'll see if I can find some 10,000 grit sandpaper.

    Just discovered that the main ingredients of this alumicut are kerosene, lanolin and lard oil! Very interesting, that's why it's biodegradable!

    Thanks so much. Method 2 beats the dog out of your first video. I guess that's because of the aluminicut? Seems like it is half the work. I am going to look at an aluminum flatbed for my one ton Monday and from the pics I think it is the aluminum that has not been shined at all (kinda like old galvanized tin ). It isn't bad like it is but I had picked out a diamond plate one that I was trying to wipe my brain around the $4500 and the 800 mile haul and the other essentials for mounting. The bed I have found is 850 cash and 260 mls pickup and haul. It is an 8 foot 8 by 8 foot bed. Your video has got me primed and stoked. I just hope that it is still there . You never know about craigslist. Anyway. Thanks for the great work. Reggie

    Great video. I’m doing/using something wrong though. It seems that to get these results you have to use aluminum oxide sand paper only not the wet/dry kind right ? I’m also trying to polish 1” x 1/4 “ strips, much less surface than what you are doing, does that make a significant difference? I got to 800 aluminum oxide ( your regular sand paper more or less) and if I pass to 1200 for example, but wet/dry it gets opaque, reverses the process. Any suggestions?

Now I'm gonna go make my mirror which will be a lot easier to refurbish back to a mirror shine after it gets hit with slag than a piece of mirror glass that just ends up pitted and useless.

    Great stuff. I hand sanded my Harley aluminum front forks to shine like chrome. From 80 grit, 200,400, 1500, 2500, 3000. Its shiny but still a little dull. I’m looking for the mirror finish. Any other suggestions?

    Once brought to a mirror finish, can you clear coat it? Will the clear coat bind to the mirror surface finish?

      @SkillsandTrade  4 роки тому

      Yes you can. The Blingmaster Blingbarrier I use acts as a clear coat and helps protect the finish

    Loved the video 👍 I'm restoring a old aluminum pancake pan.
    But I'm not sure what is safe to use chemical wise. I don't want it to be toxic after I'm done. Any ideas?

      You could probably use a little dawn dish soap and sand by hand or with a drill or orbital sander of some kind.

      @@SkillsandTrade I thought about your idea, cool I think using baking soda with it would be good for first cutting sand.👍
