      You have to be careful sanding aluminum, aluminum dust is extremely flammable if it mixes with other metals and water it will start a fire and a small confined space can such a a trash can or even a small room can potentially just be a bomb

    I just did a junk yard wheel today to practice.
    I used a da and started at 80 grit!
    After I acid washed the wheel.
    Worked it all the way to 220.
    Then heavy cut and then polish.
    Took 4 hours for both sides of one wheel.
    After seeing this, I need to get the orbital sander. Looks like it took way more off way faster then the DA.
    The heavy pitting on the bolt holes took forever.
    Thanks for sharing sir. U make it look easy.

Been using 0000 on the alum and chrome that has surface rust and I'm just getting the chrome down to a beautiful shine and polish. The lower fork's on the bike and the engine fins, I'm using a drill with compound and a grinding (cloth) wheel. I'd like to use my Makita but never have tried it.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  2 роки тому +1

      Boats are usually pretty thin. Unless you mean a pontoon. If it is a thin side boat then I recommend just doing a da. Lowest grit gets it smooth and the other grits working up make it polishable. If it is a pontoon then you can just do these steps from the video. Thanks for watching and supporting.

    I wanna know why the new husky pneumatic rotary sander has Diablo pads that don't stick.
    I thought getting a pneumatic would be like my crap hyper tough velcro style and it's not.
    Start sanding and the Diablo pads just fly right off, that's after peeling the backing off to "stick" to the pad lol

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  5 місяців тому

      I only use velcro. Working in a dust filled dirty shop doesn't do well with sticky back sand paper. Plus diablo paper is less than ideal for aluminum. It can be used on it as that is what it says on the box. But it isn't made for working on aluminum that needs polished.

  • @crazycajundiver

    Do you wet sand? I’m just starting to do pontoons on boats and I am hearing I should wet sand then cut then polish.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  5 місяців тому

      I personally never wet sand. Getting the aluminum wet and gummy makes a lot harder work for me to polish so I avoid it. But that is me personally.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing

      Sand blasting makes the metal really hot and in my opinion it makes it really tough to polish. It is almost like it burns the metal. I avoid sand blasted parts.

    Can you comment on the Alcoa coating on these wheels ? Can I cut and polish the coating they use or do I need to sand the coating off ? These are 5 yr old never polished before and pretty dull. If you're sanding off the coating, what grit are you using ? Ive experimented with 150grit on a DA/orbital and it's not effective. Polishing the coating turns it yellow from the heat.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing

      @@EvanStegerMetalPolishing thanks for the response. I usually go back over it with your liquid heavy cut compound. Am I doing to much or being to cautious? This Utah weather really tends to beat up the aluminum.

      I usually run around 2200 rpm. Not sure where that matches with your speed setting but just a personal preference thing.

    Great video! My question is this. I have a snare drum made of aluminum I want to smooth and polish. The problem is it has chrome plating on it that is pitting and peeling off. It looks really bad. Any suggestions on how to remove the chrome plating so I can polish the aluminum underneath???

    what kind of sandpaper do you use for Aluminum?
    some people use silicon carbide sand paper for aluminum.
    They say avoid using the aluminum-oxide sandpaper on Aluminum itself.
    What do you use on Aluminum?

      If I rotary I try to start at 400 and get a good start. But you can just do 600 if you wanted to. Definitely lots of ways that work. Thanks for watching.

      I would get about 2 or 3 2x4's and some screws to make an X buck, top off with a moving blanket. Probably a lot cheaper.
