I do think his voice is a notch better on their albums than live, still, he does both the cleans and the growls by himself, often while playing lead.

Storm Corrosion is a wonderful band, dreamy with atmospheric soundscapes. I suggest you to listen to " Drags Ropes ". Music video is beautiful.

If you're looking for singers (male and female) that can challenge Mikael, you should take a lock at Ayreon ... It's a multi singer rock opera project by Arjen Lucasssen, which accumulated nearly a hundred guest singers over the albums and years, including Mikeal Akerfeldt, Devin Townsend, Daniel Gildenlöw, with the most famous probably being Bruce Dickinson... That's how I found Opeth :-).

Umm, he's not even this good of a singer, what's the issue? Yeah, amazingly beautiful tone of the voice when singing calmly in 1 octave. Listen to Moon above sun below, he's awfully oversinging and overstraining.
Devin is 134135135 times better as a vocalist.
