- On Most Push button start cars they will require the application of the brake pedal to be depressed before it allows you to start the car or truck with a push of the start button..even after you have checked the car battery itself, battery in the Key Fob , neutral safety switch gone bad or even thinking its a starter..before you go that far..check your brake lights..with no brake lights on when you depress the brake pedal means the brake switch did not see the application of the pedal and with that it will Not allow the car to start..this was done so no little kid can just hop behind the steering wheel and copy what you do and start the car up and put it in gear..you need that brake application..follow along as I Troubleshoot this for Ya..Enjoy...then watch Part 2 for the replacement..

Oh yes, when the kids are away, we worry all the time about getting stuck with the car..I set them up with a preventive maintenance, a new battery, Serpentine belt, thermostat and all the coolant hoses and new tires..I'm glad it worked out for Her..Best Wishes...and Thanks for watching...

@@gutadin5 on some cars there is a starter relay..and don't forget about the Neutral safety switch..it needs to see the transmission in Park or Neutral

08 altima manual shift. Similar switches under clutch. There are 2! One is more visible than the other. Reach upward in line with clutch and you'll see 2nd switch

@@alyoungcuda that was my biggest worry, that I’d take it in and they’d say it’s multiple things that I’d have to overpay for. Again thank you!!
Reach beneath the steering column and wiggle the brake switch to get the brake light to turn on and start the car. Until you fix the switch you can hopefully get a couple more drives out of it by wiggling it a bit. Try a few times if the first time doesn't work. Sometimes the brake vacuum can get used up as well since we have to hit the brake while engine is off to start it.
You had me at wiggling the brake switch to get it going but once you mentioned the brake vacuum, you're Done..Vacuum has nothing to do with it starting, totally different system..thats the power brakes, we are on the electrical car won't start..but it was worth a chuckle..lol

My parent's car wouldn't start with the exact same issue after driving me to uni when I overslept, and this helped alot.....
Although we did have to call for a jump start, at least we didn't waste money changing both the battery and the switch
If you had to jump start the battery, then the battery is dead, go replace it if its at least 3 to 4 years old..a jump is only like a diffibertor it gives it a shock jump but the battery is still weak..just saying...Autozone can test it for free if you want...
@@alyoungcuda Nah the battery was fine since we replaced it less than a year ago....
We jump started the car because we tried and the light didn't light up until I had like 5 mins left for class...
I guess the switch was completely worn out or we were very unlucky
Great video! I also watched another one right afterwards that tells you why the problem occurs.
There is oxidation in the connector/plug that you can clean out. It seems as if you can unplug the connector and remove black half from the grey half and clean off the copper tab.
Put it back together and it'll work. Of course you can buy a new one from Nissan for $75 but try this first. Both videos are awesome and I learned a lot from both, thank you gentlemen!
I rather have a new one and know that it will last as long as the original than to think when this cleaned out one is gonna crap out on you especially when your out of town or with family all dressed up..Your choice of course...that old saying goes..You can pay me now or pay me later stands true..besides you go thru all the labor to pop it out, might as well replace it now..
Lol, "to each his own" is a better adage! Ironically, I had to do this the morning after I watched the video. It happened to be a Sunday so no dealership service department would be open and I had to drive that day.
It took all of 30 minutes to pull the piece out, clean it, and put it back. I don't have the time to set up the appointment, leave the car for days, or pay the overpriced dealership fees.
Besides that, the reason people come into UA-cam for DIY videos is to save, at least, the money! I really want to say thank you to the guy who showed how it's just something you have to clean, thank you again my brother.

Would this work on a regular key starting type instead of push button start? My 2019 Nissan Sentra is giving me issues like this. Battery is good, but when I turn the key to start it won't crank

@@alyoungcuda I just saw there is a safety recall for the brake light switch and one of the symptoms is brake light won't work or car won't start. Wondering if this could be it. I haven't had this recall completed yet

2019 Nissan Pathfinder, just had the Switch Assy Stop Lamp replaced, good thing I have an extended warranty. They had a recall for the same model but 2013/15 for this same problem, probably using the same crappy switch.
Supposedly the new switch is improved, only time will tell.

Where can you buy the switch do you need a specific kind of swicth for a certain kind of model i have 2018 pathfinder ?
Buy the original one from the Nissan dealer, and yes it will be for your model, they would need the Vin number to verify it.

This is happening to my nissan sentra 2016 and it has never happened and i just paid $600 for a new battery that was supposedly the problem, i went to the agency and it didnt start. So now im wondering if this was just the problem
If its a push button start, it sure can be..step on the brakes and see if the brake lights come on.

I’m having the same issue, but when I finally did get my car to start it shut off after 30 minutes of not driving it. Is that normal if this is in fact the the issue? Should the car shut off? I also just got a call from Nissan regarding a recall on my car for this exact thing? Hope you can help! Thanks
It should not of shut off unless it stalled out for something else..did the car restart after it shut off

How would I know if the alternator is going bad to create the Nissan 2018 not to start
A bad Alternator will Not charge up the battery and it will kill it. The Alternator will not cause a car not to start, its the battery that is dead that will cause the no start. The Alternators job basically is to recharge the battery when the car is in use. Think of it as plugging in your phone charger wire while using the phone. Places like autozone can check for free if the Alternator is working. Or you can check yourself with a multimeter on DC voltage.
I got a 2012 nissan altima same problem.. brakes are hard I got tail lights coming on.. I switched the brake pedal switch still no start.. I checked all fuses and grounds.. my steering wheel isn't locked.. any ideas or suggestions???
Turn on your headlights and watch the lights off a reflection and see if the headlights dim out or stay bright while you turn the key or push the button....and did you try starting it in neutral?

On your battery cable end there is a black square that has fusible links in there..they might be blown..it is sold as a whole assembly..for about 25.00 if you see it blown like a fuse

No I changed my starter checked all fuses changed brake pedal switch new battery still nothing... my brake lights stay on and when I try to start it the fan just runs??!! Any ideas
so just pump the brake and it works?? i didnt see you do anything else
Are you just watching the video or actually listening to the video..its all explained there..in short, you need to verify that the brake switch is working by looking at your brake lights..hence the glass picture on the benz since you can't see the brake lights and step on the pedal at the same time..otherwise get someone to help you...

Then there is a possibility that a fuse is blown..since there is no electricity, no lights?no headlights? No horn? Or radio?
I’m having the same problem with my 2014 Nissan maxima but my break lights come on when I push the pedal & break pedal is stiff when you push it thinking it could be the starter or break booster
Brake booster has nothing to do with it, turn on your headlights, have someone watch it and you try to start the car..if the headlights stays bright, then its a starter or the black fuse block on the positive battery cable..if it dims out or goes blank the headlights then its a bad battery or the battery terminals are not making contact, sometimes they are rotted away, give them a nice turn with your hand to see if the connection is tight and doesn't move loose.

@@fresh2cool957 light bulbs need very little to light up compared to the starter draw, that will pull down and draw all the juice left in a battery..did you do the test I told you?

Not sure what you mean by hearing the engine trying to start but not turning over? The terminology is killing me..does the engine crank or spin or it doesn't move at all
@@alyoungcuda it’s cranking and I’m getting power to my radio, and everything in the interior but it won’t drive , I’m sorry not very savvy with the terms LOL.
So it cranks that's good....now you have to check to see if its a lack of gas problem or no ignition/spark problem..what I would do next is to go buy carburetor cleaner in a spray can ..look for your air filter and it has a tube or hose connected to the throttle plate..spray some carb cleaner into the hose and see if it starts..if it starts and runs a few seconds then we know its a gasoline delivery problem..

How do you know its not gas..and don't say the tank is full..or you have gas..we are checking for fuel delivery..like the fuel pump is pumping ..know what I mean?

If you have No lights at all, no radio, no interior lights, you need to look at the battery 1st, then the 2 battery terminals and battery cables for a tight clean connection..then there is a black box on the side attached to the positive battery terminal that houses a few fuses..need to check that..a test light or multimeter is your best friend here..with the headlights turned on inside, you should have headlights lit up...
The brake switch would only affect the brake lights only...

What does it mean when the brake lights are working
It means the switch is working and you need to look elsewhere...did you try grabbing the battery terminals to see if they wiggle loose or are corroded

The car has a remote starter or are you using the remote to push the start button?
Good thing is atleast you know its not the battery, the starter since it starts..

When i used The remote starter is working from far away, but when i try to used start push button cant start only when i but the key near the startrer button. I change the battery but still, the brake light its on.. in Fabshope they said i should replace the starter button after that they said no there is one of the cables is missing or broken but they dont know which one it is.😔😔💔💔
@@adoo_7717 sounds like the start button is bad but who said a wire is missing? It's not like someone stole it, the wires should all be there unless this car was tampered with..they said if the key fob battery is dead, you can hold the fob and push the start button and it will start. So either the fob battery or the button is not giving or receiving the signal.

So my car 2018 Nissan Altima SV lights will turn on but won’t crank just changed the battery soon as i put it to a jump box it cranks but as soon as it sits I’ll have to jump it again i have no clue what’s the next step to do
So if you have to jump it then clearly its 2 things..a battery which you said is new but you need to check your charging system to see if its recharging back the battery when the engine is running.2nd thing is a bad connection or dirty/broken battery terminals, go and grab the terminals and try to spin them loose, they should not be able to be removed by hand and look for corrosion on them or if they rotted out.

@@Ky_moneyy its not the brake switch if it starts with the jumper and your brake lights work, if you read the comments on this video,someone had a dirty connection at that black fuse block connection

I am having this issue but my break lights come on. The battery has been checked and the starter and something else (I forget) and they are all good. Poo
If all 3 are checked, there are a few more, try starting it in neutral is one. Check the fuse block, the black square thing that is attached to the positive battery terminal, there are fuses in there that are only replaced by changing out the fuse block..check for 12 volts out of that on the other side since the main side is attached to the battery itself . Key fob battery or bad key fob, take your key fob and use it to push in the starter button to see if it starts..also the starter button itself can be bad..its only a few wires to unplug and replace. And is something else the starter relay? If not check or replace the starter relay.
All my lights come on, but my engine dont start. I had it jumped it wasnt that. I checked the fuse is wasnt that, ugh. This car has beeen breaking me
Try this..turn on your headlights..have someone look at the lights as you try to start it..see if the lights dim out when you turn the key or stays bright..if it dims it is a bad battery connection or bad battery..a bad battery will not take a jump on some cars..if it stays bright then its the starter..did you try starting it in neutral?
@@alyoungcuda thanks for replying. Its a push start, and the Maxima has problem with the brake switch. Them 2 switches under the steering wheel. Omg i heard its alot to replace. I had this car a little over a year. Its a 2010 Maxima SV, it had 80k on it. I must of put over 5k into this car in a year and a half.

What if the break light comes on and it still won’t start?
Then there are other things involved, like the neutral safety switch, does it start in park or neutral. Is the battery older than 3 years, are the battery terminals clean and making good contact like can you move them when you grab them and I mean really try to wiggle them off. Put on your headlights, are they on? When you go to start the car, does the headlights stay bright or do they dim out.
Did you check that black box that is connected to the positive terminal, its a fuse that could be blown. Could be a bad starter too. Some have a Starter Relay
@@alyoungcuda I’m not sure how to tell if the fuse is blown but I can’t start it in any gear. My headlights are bright. The battery had some corrosion but it seemed to work fine before and after I cleaned it. How else would I be able to tell off the starter was bad or the fuse was blown?
@@kingkarter21 a test light will help, connect the clip to the negative terminal, then use the probe end to check for power, it should light at the positive terminal, then it should light on the wires coming out of the black fuse terminal..or you can remove the black fuse block and test it with a mutimeter.
I just tried this on my daughter's car and what I did was I pumped the break pedal then kept it pressed and it turned on
Thats a sign of a bad switch..change it before you get stuck and it won't work

@@yandinakathleenkhan8596 cranks then it has nothing to do with the battery or Starter or key fob or neutral safety switch. Its fuel related..take a can of gumout carburetor cleaner and spray it into the throttle plate, if it fires up and then stalls out then you know where to look next.
My 2013 Altima has no-crank (button start); dash "Press Brake" indicator is ON, but I AM hitting brake; Already replaced both switches on brake pedal. Tested switches with ohm meter; note each switch has only two wires, one circuit each). Pressing brake makes brake lights and shifter-lockout solenoid click, but it still thinks I'm not pressing brake ?! Pressing start switch once does radio. Press 2nd time does full ignition/dash indicators/fan etc. Release brake and press third time shuts all off like normal. But, if pressing brake, repeatedly pressing start never cycles to OFF, just makes quiet click, all the time insisting that I should press the brake. Brand new battery, always bright headlights. Anyone seen this ? I'm stuck.
Check the positive battery terminal it should have a wide like 2 in or 3 in black box..inside that box are fuses..check those out

@@alyoungcuda Update: Checked all fuses and links inside and under hood in IPDM and in relay box, all good. Note that my fuse box does not look like the picture others show for 2013 - possible transition year ? Also, there is a legend for the relays, and I was surprised to find NO starter relay mentioned, just horn, fans etc. (I wanted to try jumpering it to prevent need for towing). I can not reach the starter solenoid wires yet.

What didn't work? Did you have brake lights? If so then you need to check the other stuff that is required to start a car, check your battery, starter, battery fuse, battery terminal connections for corrosion and broken, see if it starts in neutral, check your push button start switch.
