The harmonica is used in nearly every type of music, from blues and jazz to country and rock. In this video, music teacher Marcus Milius teaches you about the different types of harmonicas.
"Hi, my name is Marcus Milius. I play harmonica. I got a degree at the University of Southern California, a Bachelor's of Music, in Jazz Studies - Chromatic Harmonica. I play and teach harmonica here in New York City, and I'm happy to show you what I do.
One thing that is very confusing about harmonica is that there are so many different kinds. Often times this is just the difference in names, in models, or brands. For instance, the blues harp the marine pan, the special twenty, the golden melody which are all diatonic harmonicas by the Horner company and they are really all very similar. But the main differences in harmonica will be primarily the diatonic and chromatic harmonica. There are many others as well as base harmonica, chord harmonica, echo harmonica, or tremolo harmonica. And they all have different sounds, but primarily it divides into diatonic and chromatic harmonica. Chromatic harmonica looks like this. It plays in all keys, and sounds a bit like the artists Stevie Wonder or twist talemen. Diatonic harmonicas will be set up in one key and you'll need twelve of them to play in every key and they tend to have a bluesier folkier sound, or a bluesy sound. And you'll notice that they bend very nicely, and they have really nice double stops or chords. The other harmonicas that are out there would be the base harmonica, chord harmonicas which are really big, there are also diatonic harmonicas that are tuned to minor, or other scales. There are diatonic harmonicas that have a very organ like sound and they're called echo harps or tremolo harps. So, that takes a lot of investigating to know the difference. But usually most people are going to be playing the majority of recordings that you hear will be chromatic harmonica and diatonic harmonica and they're pretty easy to hear the difference between.

So I was blowing into my diotonic harmonica, thinking "What gives? I can't play several of these notes at all!"
Then I heard him saying something about breathing in, and sure enough, when I inhaled I realized the hole played a completely different note.
Achievement unlocked! Now I'm at harmonica level 2.

i like that blues sound, i bought a diatonic harmonica recently that has 10 holes and it says it's Tune A, but the sound doesn't sound like blues, is it good to play blues ?.. i want a harmonica that has that specific blues sound :/

Yeah I learned this my own. I put my headset then imitate the tune. I learned it fast. I can identify which best composed music, which one is easy, which one has intelligent composer and which one is very good and bad composer. Sharp notes in the guitar chords are the most difficult in harmonica. I play the key of c, d and g. Idk more about the rules of this instrument but I do easily follow a tune from karaoke songs. Its great and very handy music in the pocket wherever you go you can play music that you want or follow music being played on tv or radio

I play the chinese harmonica with 2 rows of holes at the top and bottom. I am not sure if they are diatonic or chromatic but they are great sounding and easy to play. Would you recommend those?

chromatics can be played in any key once you know the patterns of #s and bs. they can come in different keys. and they can range from 8 to 16 holes.

I play marine band cost about $50 and hold up well. Just don't overplay on them bc they need to be broken in and pushing them too hard will put them out of tune

I have a "marine band" harmonica, looks like a D key, it has a D on it. On the 6th slot, the note created when i draw is higher than when i blow, but on the 7th slot, the not created when i draw is LOWER than when I blow. It sounds like there is a note missing, I have been trying to play a certain song and this harmonica does not seem to be able to play it. Do I need a different harmonica? Or is this harmonica out of tune or something

how on earth did your average cowboy learn to bend? (gunsmoke,Rawhide, to name only a few. Those programs gave me the insperation to learn in the first place And people tell me "you can play that good ,how do i know if i can already do it? but i do seem to sound like C/western in bits and pieces but you can't tell what you actually sound like unless you can stand on the other side..of yourself?
how did you learn to bend?
Learning to bend is not very hard. To start bending is much easier on draws but can be done on blows. And the basics are te you need to tighten your embouchure and draw more air faster. The correct ammount of both of those things your gonna have to find by yourself. Because depending on the harp Nd other thing it can change.

same harmonica. it's all about how you play them to get those sounds. a C diatonic is a great place to start for blues

Vince Magada I think you are comparing hohner golden melody with others harmonica. The different between golden melody and others is the tuning, golden melody has equal temperament tuning that more suitable for playing melody and single notes. Many jazz player prefers this tuning. Meanwhile for other harmonica, they all have richter tuning. In richter tuning, they are not tuned to the perfect pitch but is really smooth and nice for chord playing and bluesy sound.

For a friend get a diatonic 10 hole harmonica. Probably the best most versatile harmonica to start with. I would suggest a suzuki bluesmaster in the keys of c, or a.
