DCS USS Forrestal First Impressions and A-4E Instrument Approach Practice

  • The Heatblur USS Forrestal module is here. It's free. It's also impressive. In addition to carrying F-14's in the 1970's and 80's, the Forrestal saw a lot of the A-4 earlier in her life in the 60's and into the 70's.
    So today we'll take her out and do an instrument approach practice to see if we can get aboard her with the scooter.

    Lol, "that landing might not have been a thing of beauty but I still maintain the USS Forrestal is". Give yourself some credit. Even the pros don't get the third wire every time :) Loved the opening cinematics and overview. Carrier ops bring a whole 'nother aspect and challenge to DCS. Great intro.

      Thanks. Won't tell you how many "takes" it took to get the one good landing. All good, though because operating from the Forrestal really takes the immersion to another level.

    I was impressed with A-4 AI on the Forrestal. They taxied to the cat, waggled their control surfaces etc, never noticed that on the super carrier. Now we need good AI carrier pals like the A-3 Skywarrior.

    • @Sidekick65
      @Sidekick65  2 роки тому +7

      Agreed. It's come a long way. The last time I tried this (months ago) the AI could not even take-off without crashing. Now, they actually do a Case 1 approach and land too!

    I think Heat Blur must have the best texture artists because it is beautiful.

    I am an old forestall A4 pilot with over 100 Traps on the mighty Forrest Fire, (its nick name at the time.) Many Of those traps at night. Your trap was nice, A bit of a high start, fast Middle, but good corrections. Seldom would they allow a straight in approach from that far out. Normally you would do a penitration decent to level off 12 miles out the start the approach at 6 miles to intercept the glide slope, then call scooter ball at no less than a quarter mile out. Great fun it was.

      I'm curious, what do you think of the a-4 in dcs from what you've seen? As I understand it's very accurate considering the dev team is doing this for nothing more than appreciation.

    I think that landing was beautiful, if a little gritty, just like the Forrestal.
    Carrier landings are somewhat like iron bombing; if you can arrive at the right place with the right speed and altitude, the rest falls mostly into place.
    There is also the amazing VNAO T-45 mod, for people who prefer a bit more technological assistance for their first carrier landing attempt.

      I gave tried the T45. Had not made any videos yet because I had not solved the problem of making reliable track files. But I think I have that sorted now, so there may be some coming...

    • @slowhornet4802

      @Ian Christie Great video. Re making reliable track files: are there any tricks you could share? My track files are sometimes very different compared to the original flights.

    • @Sidekick65
      @Sidekick65  2 роки тому +3

      Well, it turns out that multiplayer track files saved on a server don't seem to have the same problem. So the workaround I am using is to run a server on one computer and start the mission as an observer and fly the mission from another machine and record the live cockpit video. The external track file on the server will match the cockpit video that I record.
      It's a lot of work to get a useable track file. But at least it's possible.

    • @slowhornet4802
      @slowhornet4802 2 роки тому

      Many thanks. Will try that, although I have only one PC :-)
      I heard that Liberation campaigns (or any complex missions with many units) would run smoother if they are run on a "server" and you join from the same PC compared to running the mission directly from DCS. Maybe DCS can make better use of multicores / multithreads? Which might help to avoid corrupt track files?

    • @Sidekick65
      @Sidekick65  2 роки тому

      Not sure. Haven't tried just running a mission on a server and checking the track file. That might work as well. Something to try...

    For those interested, here's a link to some really good info on the Forrestal's service and some great photos. I found the links for the embarked air wings particularly useful, outlining which squadrons were deployed for each cruise, and which aircraft they were flying at the time, at least for some of them.

    You would have been waved off for being high all the way. Landing would be graded as high all the way ease gun to land, high come down to land underlined, taxi one wire. This would be a extensive debrief by LSO. However, not bad for a nugget with literally no experience . Definitely living life on the margins😬🏴‍☠️
