Stressful like the brief passing thought of barbequing ones guts on the ramp (aft edge of flightdeck)? Maybe the first few times to the carrier? But from what I saw at NAS Miramar in the 70's & 80's, they must have done dozens of field carrier landing touch and go's before that. When you'd fly one of those out to a carrier, there's no instructor in back with a set of flight controls to correct any mistakes, was there? But you would have already landed a T-2 or TA-4 on a carrier before that, I'm sure.
At 13:10 "Good shot": You could literally hear that Mooch was expecting/experiencing the thrust as he shouts it due to his real life launches. 😂 Awesome!
I hope you're one of those former pilots who continues to provide this kind of helpful instruction where feasible. The DCS community is very fortunate to have this kind of free tuition, effectively. Unfortunately, I am aware that there have been former pilots who've basically given up tutorial based videos of this nature, because of the arm-chair pilots nit-picking procedures. Despite not having any formal experience or instruction themselves, they're eager to impart wisdom and criticism to the person who actually does. So, as you were sir.
Thanks Ward. I’m very new to DCS. I have the beginnings of my set up. The TomCat is such a high fidelity model that it will take plenty of study, mapping controls and settling into flying it off of, and back onto a carrier. I was an RC pilot awhile back and had a feel for the stick. The planes I flew had six foot wingspans and we had a true to scale runway for them. They weren’t TomCat jets of course. Mine was a high wing mounted Cessna. But I loved the feel. I was told by a retired United Airlines pilot that flying RC planes is actually harder than the real thing, because each time you circle your plane around the runway, you are NOT in your aircraft, and each time you circle, your controls are reversed. So It makes me happy to start getting into the true first person perspective and see how that feels. Thank you again. Not just for your efforts in keeping up your UA-cam channel, but for your service to our great country. I appreciate it.
Hey Mooch, thanks for this. Couple of things to note: 1. The DCS: Supercarrier module IFLOS is currently set-up for the F/A-18 and does not yet account for the increased hook-eye distance in the Turkey; I find I have to come in one-ball high to land the hook in the 3 -wire. 2. Similarly the on-speed calls from the LSO are geared for the Hornet and tend to call you slow when you are on-speed; if you're not already, ignore the LSOs power calls 3. You seem to be dragging nose left after trapping - might be worth checking that your left main wheel brake pedal hasn't wandered out of calibration and is permanently slightly on...
Yeah the LSO calls are off. The "animated" IFLOS seems to be on the mark. I usually refer to that instead. Once in the groove in the B Cat, it's just Lineup, AOA, DLC all the way in. Hardly touch the power setting until slamming into the deck.
I love how natural of a teacher you are. I can only imagine how lucky the JG’s were having you in the back seat on their first tours. I am literally amazed at how quickly the decent timing is from base final turn in to landing on the deck. It’s like 15 seconds or less from calling the ball until on the deck. Crazy. I have been waiting for this for so long. I would seriously pay $100 or more to have a Mooch RIO/Instructor soundpack. I could watch videos like this, just learning for days. I have so many hours in the 14 in DCS, but listening and watching you makes me feel like a total noob again!
I been using this module for 1.5 years and I love it. It is a very special module. I changed F/A 18 for this and the feeling is totally different. It is by far one of the best, if not the best module in DCS. I follow you since some time and now I really love what you´re doing. BTW I have a channel for DCS in Spanish. And I like to do tutorials about what I learned and no other DCS tutorials do. Thank you very much for sharing this. I love it.
I just Downloaded DCS last week! I started out with just a keyboard and a Xbox controller! lol I just received my Thrustmaster throttle and joystick from Amazon. What a difference it makes! Iam currently flying the F/18C. I got it on sale for $40. I also bought the Supercarrier DLC on sale for $30. Iam eventually going to purchase the F/14B which is my favorite plane! This is the coolest thing, Ward. A real-life Tomcat guy in a declassified (and thus _full_ fidelity) DCS module! We never see tutorials this detailed from real-life Hornet or Viper guys, and it will be a few years before we do. Thanks-a-million!

I'm so glad that you're making DCS guides now! The training missions really don't cut it, and I bet these will be great to increase my understanding of proto and techniques! Loved that you had a bolter the first try, makes it even more realistic. Guys, imagine having to do this in bad weather with no vis while tired, grumpy and I bet really scared because ejecting isn't a great option.
Read the F-14 and Supercarrier manuls if you haven't already, they're very informative, and give you a very precise procedure to follow to make you life easy

It is great to see him working his scan and muscle memory. Let’s not forget that he knows the procedures like no one but he is overcoming a major challenge, he doesn’t have the instinctive muscle memory of a pilot with thousands hrs learned at a young age. He’s got it and difficult to downgrade his flying skills but you can feel he is hesitant with the power or correcting his line up. I am sure he will get it very soon. I can’t wait to see the refueling where throttle control and stick control are paramount. I very much enjoy and he is a master instructor. I am fascinated by how well he is able to switch procedures from back seat to front seat, not easy when you have done it for so many years from the perspective of a RIO. Sir, do you already have your pilot license? If not, please do it and take us on your adventures.
Ward, that was a nice, fast 33 minutes. Even tho I was tired, I didn't fall asleep. Anecdotes and a bunch of questions. Anecdotes: I haven't flown any avn sims since maybe 2000 or 2001 (Longbow Apache, (w/ individual engine controls, wheel brakes, moving rudder, trainable turret, aerial pattern training... Super-immersive sim Longbow was), 8 CDs, then one got scratched (bc the CD door and caddy moved before I could pull the disc), ended my play). Around 1993, on a 386 (486?) DX2-66 (w/ 2 controller cards, 16 mb RAM, 2 CD ROMs, and multiple floppy drives, (IDE, not SCSI), I flew the F-14 sim. After a while, I internalized the takeoff and landing circle (I didn't do a real racetrack, IIRC) and got to where I could even make night traps w/fewer crashes. I did sweat a lot doing night traps, and I found myself banking my head with the fuselage. I miss that tone/growl in the headphones. The graphics were ancient compared to the 00s and nowadays' graphics. I later bought a racecar set of pedals and plugged into my controller for the Longbow. But, for the F14 and the Longbow, I used both the throttles and sticks for more fun. I also did the Spectrum Holobyte F-16 for a while, but stopped around 1995. Questions: About the cockpit... In DCS, can the player have legs, feet, and arms present? It would seem to be more fun and not deem disembodied to actually see the foot pedals/brakes move relative to player inputs. Maybe even show the maps/pilot bag in there. If a mission goes long, is there a sim pack that allows (ridiculous) in-flight peeing? Eating a candy bar? Experiencing vertigo/brownout/blackout? Does the sim introduce compressor and fuel pump or other relevant scenarios? Does the sim allow for the pilots being laser dazzled like happened on occasion, but have the LSO/tower talk the pilot down (day or night)? (IIUC, the Navy DID/DOES have auto landing, but it was usually off/forbidden, so pilots would not dull their edge/skills.) Are there training packs that deliberately ruin an in-flight refueling, like spilling fuel on the canopy, or, say, wingtip contact and enough damage to cause an emergency landing? Do players who crash cause waveoff for others? If the carrier is not in company with another CV/CVN, and the ship is, say, 2,000 nm from the nearest alternative landing field, and other pilots are bingo fuel, would the game honor reality if a rogue player trashed the flight deck, and make some players have to ditch if the deck is too fouled, and make some players have to seek alternate refueling from other in-game assets, to reach shore? Anyway, I suppose I'll someday look up the answers for my questions by actually buying into the sim if I get a computer dedicated just for it.
I am 65 and this stuff looks incredibly real to me, it is just amazing. These other shows say you have a lot to learn to actually FLY the DCS and not some little gammy thing.
I had trouble refueling until I went VR with the Varjos. Depth perception made all the difference with the basket. Great video. Look forward to the next.

I had the benefit years ago (three decades) to learn the numbers (for simulator landings) for Case I recovery from a 14A driver. As you were talking your way around the pattern, it was all rushing back. And it still feels rushed from the 90 til rolling back off the wire. Guess you gotta make Centurion before time slows down. Great talk through--thank you for the sim vs game distinction at the end. And as L Vance mentions, I could hear the quads tense during "Good shot!" as well.

I would watch countless hours of CQ's from vultures row on my off time on the Carl Vinson. 1993 to 1997 when we still had the Tomcats....You literally filled in the blanks of what I only imagined what those crews were thinking and doing the whole time. Your comments about the selector controls for the ejection seats reminded me of something. When I did a T-38C Talon ride in April, I considered it a serious compliment that my pilot trusted me and my decade old training to punch us out if need be. Thankfully the flight went great, really didn't want to earn my Martin Baker watch on my first and only fighter jet ride.
The coolest thing I've ever seen & heard! MORE DCS videos please! After watching MANY launches & recoveries of Tomcats & Hornets from "Vulture's Row" aboard the JCS (CVN-74) in '99/'00, it's awesome to get a perspective & play by play I only wondered about! Bravo Zulu!

Awesome. My only flying has been done with Janes USAF some time back. It's not as realistic as DCS but there still is a Pucker Factor. Was comforting to see the ILS line up appropriately.
Hey mooch if you put the switch on the radio to “hot mic” you’ll hear the ground crew respond to you after your rearm / refuel request and they will also tell you when refueling is complete.

Anyway, I suppose I'll someday look up the answers for my questions by actually buying into the sim if I get a computer dedicated just for it.
I am 65 and this stuff looks incredibly real to me, it is just amazing. These other shows say you have a lot to learn to actually FLY the DCS and not some little gammy thing.

I had trouble refueling until I went VR with the Varjos. Depth perception made all the difference with the basket. Great video. Look forward to the next.

Ward, I love the content, and the Tomcat is the reason I joined the Navy. I spent 21 years as a Naval Aircrewman. I would love to see a DCS video with you and BIO flying together in the same Tomcat. Mooch rules! Ever since I was flying my Commodore 64 around I always ached for more realism. Great to see a real Tomcat guy take us through it.
I had the benefit years ago (three decades) to learn the numbers (for simulator landings) for Case I recovery from a 14A driver. As you were talking your way around the pattern, it was all rushing back. And it still feels rushed from the 90 til rolling back off the wire. Guess you gotta make Centurion before time slows down.
Great talk through--thank you for the sim vs game distinction at the end. And as L Vance mentions, I could hear the quads tense during "Good shot!" as well.

I would watch countless hours of CQ's from vultures row on my off time on the Carl Vinson. 1993 to 1997 when we still had the Tomcats....You literally filled in the blanks of what I only imagined what those crews were thinking and doing the whole time. Awesome. Oh, and all your "Gooooood Shhhot!!" calls literally made me hold my breath and slightly flex my abs as if I was in the seat. Very nice. IYAOYAS! Your comments about the selector controls for the ejection seats reminded me of something. When I did a T-38C Talon ride in April, I considered it a serious compliment that my pilot trusted me and my decade old training to punch us out if need be. Thankfully the flight went great, really didn't want to earn my Martin Baker watch on my first and only fighter jet ride.

Awesome. My only flying has been done with Janes USAF some time back. It's not as realistic as DCS but there still is a Pucker Factor. Was comforting to see the ILS line up appropriately.

Hey mooch if you put the switch on the radio to “hot mic” you’ll hear the ground crew respond to you after your rearm / refuel request and they will also tell you when refueling is complete.
