Imagine dying and meeting schafrillas at the gates of heaven only for him to say “your life was painfully average” and condemn you to purgatory
He wouldn’t be entirely incorrect tbh
Purgatory is going to be awfully crowded, then, considering what "average" means.
Would he be a giant shiny crab then?
@@abcabrera1121 it's his true form
if you're a subversive masterpiece, you go to heaven, if you're painfully average, you get purgatory, and if you're a cinematic disaster, to the depths of tartarus with you.
Honestly I felt like Black Panther had more female empowerment than Captain Marvel did. Because almost all of the female characters in Black Panther were interesting and cool. Captain Marvel is just kind of there
Thank you! You're a real one!
@Grant Baynes "personality" its pretty important
I couldn’t agree more. They gave us four (4) complex female characters with different motivations and personalities, I got a sense of who Nakia, Okoye, Shuri and Ramonda were and why they acted the way they did in a movie in which neither were the main character. The worst part about it is that CM could, but actively chose otherwise.
Grant Baynes she’s also a nazi & mind-raped people girl bye
Umbrella Corporation I also agree, but I also love that you specified four as the number
In the famous words of Knuckles the Echidna: “Anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo.” I never once felt empowered by this character unfortunately, because it felt like I was being patronized with cringey flashbacks that did more harm than good. Not to mention I found Captain Marvel’s character to be bland and paper thin. Wonder Woman, however did literal WONDERS (pun intended) in this regard, because it didn’t feel like it was about gender, but about a PERSON taking charge and overcoming what others could not, and that person just so happened to be a woman. Far more moving and impactful, it’s a shame they handled Captain Marvel so poorly.
Karsyn zzstu Beauchamp I’ve seen it
I cant belive that knuckles the echidna from SONIC BOOM can so accurately explain the problem with emphasizing the "strong independent woman" trope. It's ok to have a strong independent woman, but that cant be their only personality trait. You also cant be constantly telling people "hey shes a strong independent woman" because, as knuckles said, it makes it seem like an exception. In conclusion knuckles from sonic boom has a gigantic brain.
@@LoserLilith no, knuckles from sonic boom is actually pretty incompetent, if you Wanna see a smart badass knuckles I suggest you watch sonic x, it's a great sonic series
@@milesandrews6711 yeah he’s a dumbass and not very good in sonic boom but that’s what people like about his character (also yknow.. feminist icon knuckles)
"What? Just because I'm a meathead doesn't mean I'm not a feminist!"
My main problem with this movie is how nick fury lost his eye. That moment was supposed to be a turning point in his life and make him a different person, but instead “haha funny cat.”
Graham Vande Vegte, it was not even funny. Fury was always talking about how his damaged eye was caused by someone he trusted. It could’ve been something deep and explained why Fury is the person he is today. Instead, we get "cat scratches eye". Yes, ‘cause that’s betrayal. A cat scratching your eyes.
"lAsT tIMe i tRusTeD sOmeOne, i lOsT aN eYE"
Graham Vande Vegte someone clearly doesn’t watch New Rockstars
I like to see it as him using it to his advantage by taking a really dumb truth and tweaking it into a mystery.
@@lost7149 well he does lie to the avengers about an agents death to motivate them to fight so it's not a surprise that he lied about his eye
The first female-protagonist Marvel movie should've been Black Widow
Oh my god this is so true a black widow movie would have been much more interesting
What about Antman and the Wasp?
@@williamsapong81 What ABOUT Ant Man and Wasp.
Yeah, I really wished that they would've released Black Widow's movie instead of Captain Marvel's cause then we would know her better and her character's arc would end more smoothly in Endgame. Like, we would understand her actions in Endgame more and feel for her better if we actually had known her tragic past. (unless you've read the comics of course)
They seriously should've released Captain Marvel after Endgame.

@@gavin8859 Nah. That's DC. His name is Shazam now.
@Ethan Baker No, the original Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), was a male, and a part of Marvel. However, they made him a female in th film for...reasons, I guess.
@@rocko1331 Do you have a link to this character? Because I only know the Marvel (Miss Marvel) and DC (Captain Marvel/Shazam) ones
I liked Wonder Woman way more
They didn’t make a Woman who was Superhero, they made a Superhero who was a woman.
Apart from that one scene where Wonder Woman strolled out to No Man's Land, the movie was awfully so so. And the Ares twist makes my blood boil more than the Zemo bullshit in Marvel's Civil War. "Hey let's make a profound statement about the human condition- oh wait no, lol. People war because Ares."
I thought the Civil War bs of "Hey, what if our heroes struggle with deeply complicated problems of security vs freedom, accountability vs privacy, etc. Oh wait no. Guy mad. Guy manipulates. We need a villain."
@@Eanki_ it may not be for you but the ideas of wonder women has heavy bases in mythos so it makes sense
Wow very "I don't hate you because you're fat, you're fat because I hate you." vibes
exactly
@@TheGhostoftheCosmos Sense isn't the problem he means. The movie was all about how war is caused by people on different sides. Then they stuck in a CGI fight scene with a literal god with no setup
If the movie was going to have a huge CGI boss battle at the end it should have had some sort of lead up ingrained in the story rather than pop out of nowhere
I think everyone can agree that the opening of the film where they replaced the Marvel Studios logo with a bunch of Stan Lee clips was the best part of the film
yes
I loved it when they did that
As a girl l have to say: this type of movies don't make me feel "empowered" at all. I feel like they are using my gender as some type of clickbait and excuse for half-assed characters and stories when l just want to have a good time watching a good story with good interesting characters who just so happen to be female. Is it that much to ask?
...I mean, feminists are practically nothing with their role models (MaRey Sue, Captian Sociopath, etc) getting unearned, undeserved power from a doting scriptwriter. There are no doting scriptwriters beyond real life, making feminists have no choice but to resort to screaming persecution and churning out more shallow generic powerhouse characters with vaginas.
Seriously, have them ever thought about maybe making themselves better people (personality- and skill-wise) and beating the men they hate so much at their game, fair and square?
Write characters that are believable personalities. People will like them more than if they feel like shoehorned-in feminist icons.
Thanks
🙏
I've learnt that if you take away something from a character, gender or disability or stereotype, and you have nothing left of the character than it's poorly written.

It's nice to see representation separated from the actual quality of the art by someone actually advocating more representation.
Honestly, I'd point out that while good representation can boost the quality of a movie, the emphasis should be on GOOD representation. 5:30 This! This is a point I bring up in every conversation I have about the Marvel Universe. I argue that Wanda is a far better character than Carol. Wanda got her powers from being hooked up to Loki's Scepter which contained the Mind Stone. Carol was hit by a blast from the explosion of a spacecraft that powered by the Tesseract that housed the Space Stone. The advantage that Carol had was someone working with her to improve her control of her powers. Also, I want to see Scarlet Witch be the villain in a Marvel movie. She would be the perfect candidate. Lost her family because of Stark. Lost her brother because of Ultron, had to kill Vision to save the universe. Then, was forced to watch as Thanos brought Vision back to life, only to pull the Mind stone from his head. Then, salt in the wounds, Vision was one of the few people who wasn't brought back in Endgame. One day my essay on why Endgame is actually not great will be finished and posted...
Honestly I hated how strong scarlet witch was really, because it makes no sense that she is stronger than people like thor, captain America and iron man who held off multi stone Thanos, or how she held off multi stone thanos despite having the power of only one stone
But then again I can't expect marvel to understand anything about powerscaling
You love Wanda vision huh
Goose being the reason Fury lost his eye was poorly executed. It was established that he said he was betrayed by a friend, and he said that with a solid amount of hidden emotion (props to the actor, obviously) and "haha no tough guy get eye scratched by kitty :)"

I know girl power films have good (marketing) intentions, but it honestly just feels like it's talking down to women.
the part that talks about how captain marvel feels meh, but if she inspires women, more power to her, kind of proves that point
It feels like marvel is saying "I know you can't possibly relate to or connect with all those MALE superheroes, so here's some poorly thought out crumbs for you." It feels like such a token gesture because they clearly don't give enough of a damn to write this properly into the mcu, but women are supposed to look up to her because she's powerful and a woman. It honestly feels pretty condescending.
I don't dislike the motivations behind captain marvel being a girl power film because I hate feminism or I think brie larson has a bad attitude, or whatever people claim makes people dislike the film.
I dislike it because there's this subtext that every other marvel hero wasn't actually for women and girls after all, because here's a hero for the women and girls (someone, you know, they can actually relate to, because since she's a girl, she has a lot in common with every other girl ever, right?) and girls can't look at inspiring male figures and think that they could accomplish that too someday. I don't think it's outside of the realm of possibility that a girl could look up to Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, or dare I mention the OG female hero of the mcu, Black Widow. It gives this impression that women and girls are so lost for role models that any hastily thrown together hero with flimsy motivations will do.... because she's so randomly powerful and we said she's awesome (cause of that girl power) so she's awesome and you need to look up to her. Would it have been so hard to write a Black Widow movie that everyone would have cared about because they've had time to get attached to her character?
It just feels incredibly condescending. It's about the least feminist thing I can imagine, honestly.
Almost all of the heros in the MCU are heroes because they proven themselves by earing their powers like Cap and Thor or simply being skilled or smart enough. "If you're nothing without the suit you shouldn't have it." Meanwhile, Captain Marvel doesn't get this moment. Who knew female empowerment was so literal. It's kinda sexist for her hero quality to be something unrealistic. "Hey little susie, you wanna make a stand as a hero?! Well if you don't get powers than you can forget about it!" She might as well be a gun. Heck, why not go with a story arc where she dies and with her last breath transfers her power to someone more worthy
To be honest female supper heroes= male super hero without balls that’s all😂😂😂😂, I cannot see the difference at all ( except marketing, they think will make women happy for some reason 😂), I’m not trying to say don’t make female super hero, just write them differently or make them interesting in a different way, unfortunately when I see right now a movie or a tv show the main character is a female, i will think oh shit here we go again. There really amazing female characters like the cast of the handmaid’s tale, Wonder Woman, black widow and etc, they truly need to stop putting agendas above good writing, that’s what I mean
Preach.
I never understood people demanding more good female characters.
Most movies I watched had pretty great female characters, many who are the protagonist.
I just got to ask what movies you all were watching.
@@Jailson_rah Yes! It's pretty shallow to say someone can't connect to a character of a different race or gender. It undermines the similarities people have: pains, fears, traumas, dreams, etc, by saying someone can't sympathize or empathize because they're not just like someone else. Look at fantasy: if readers can relate or at least understand elves, fairies, and cat people who don't even exist is real life, why do some think that they can't do the same thing with someone of a different skin color or gender?
I love how he really does not wanna talk about Nick Fury’s eye lmao
I think you nail it in the part about Wonder Woman - even as an adult male, Wonder Woman is someone I genuinely would aspire to be like because she is representative of truth, love, goodness, and bravery. She earns the right to be inspirational. Captain Marvel is simply a power trip fantasy - while she sacrifices a lot, it doesn't seem like much as the Kree seem like they aren't that fun to hang around and the audience never warmed up to their creepy Kree culture to begin with. The Supreme Intelligence and the power dampening device keys the audience in from the get-go that the Kree are evil, so it isn't really a surprise when she figures out that she's been lied to her entire life. Meanwhile, Diana gave up a great life and the people she loved in order to save some people she doesn't know who deserve their fate. Diana's sacrifice is so much more meaningful and it makes her vastly more inspirational as a result.
A strong female character is someone who is put up against difficult obstacles and has to find a way to overcome them and take a few hits along the way. They were weak and defeated at one point but with Time they knew how to take a hit and still have the strength to stand and fight back. Captain marvel should’ve never been an overpowered female character with no flaws. Because if they have unlimited power and no weaknesses, how can women who have suffered from helplessness see you as a symbol of empowerment?

My main complaint with Captain Marvel was Brie Larson’s lack of emotion. When her entire plot was that she struggled too much with emotion
I wouldn't put this movie on the same level as Doctor Strange. I can recall a dozen scenes from Doctor Strange and I can't do that for Capt. Marvel, and I just saw it last night.
I can recall scenes from doctor strange but none of them bring me joy.
The villain wasn’t very good lol, I mean I thought the scene where he was restrained was pretty good, but other than that, he was pretty mediocre, but I liked Strange a ton
Very true
@Friendly Metroid pal if you can’t remember things from the night before, that’s not a mediocre movie, that’s called memory impairment
Strange was at least good for its visual effects if nothing else, and I personally thought the character writing for Strange himself was pretty strong, not sure I can say the same for Captain Marvel.
7:16 "the first female movie in the MCU could have and should have been *_Black Widow_* "
FTFY
the joke about the girl at the beginning as the most female empowerment had me dead omg
They should have just made captain marvel have no super powers but very clever and she should have fought the space battles with a space jet or something to say, you don’t need super powers to be “super”
Oh thats just black widow so wtvr
This "Well she isn't for me, she is there to inspire girls" is bullshit
If your audience is supposed to relate to the character just because they look alike then you failed to make a real character
Exactly. I think the character I'm most similar to is Bruce Banner. I'm a teenage girl ffs.
I'm all for powerful female characters but a lot of them seem to be there just because they're female. Boy I do not give a shit what gender they are, just write a character.
Valkerie, Mantis and Nebula are great in my opinion because it seems like the writers focused more on who they are and not what in their pants.
Very well said.
on one hand i agree with this, but this is also a bit obtuse. Some characters and motivations are not universal, and their struggles might not be able to be related to by a general audience regardless of how good the writing is. Relate does not equate to sympathize.
The whole girl power thing (in this instance) is just a way to cover up BAD WRITING. It's funny how Capt. Marvel is supposed to be inspiring but the whole thing is uninspired.
@@user-dy8zr5pj1e i personally dont really think that you have to necessarily relate to a character in order for them to have an impact on you and to inspire you, even if their motivations arent universal, as you said. sometimes the characters that have the least to do with yourself might even be the ones that have the greatest impact on you.
i agree that represantion and empowerment are important, but to me those two things dont always have to correlate.
So… why exactly did Captain Marvel supposedly have so much potential? It just seemed to be a standard Marvel movie, just with a new hero and new locations.
But Wyatt... it’s a girl this time
As he said, this is the first Marvel movie about a standalone female superhero (all others movies with females had them kind of in a second plane, or sharing the spotlight with male characters. Not even Black Widow has her own movie yet). It could have portrayed a relatable and powerful female character that could have ended up being a true feminist icon, and it missed the opportunity. And given that Endgame is on the way, there likely won't be a chance for any more.
Dinoman972 Too bad Carol Danvers is a boring character in the comics too /:
UnlimitedEdge it really depends on the run.
Because wamen
Steve Rogers and Captain Marvel:
-Both where shunned and bullied by their fellow humans
-Both joined the military
-Both unlocked superpowers of some sort
-Both ended up as superheroes with star costumes
Only difference is Steve has a fucking character and personality, actually failed instead of just being bullied, has emotional moments and morals, and wasn’t always perfect, even to the very end in Endgame
5:57 HE KNEW THE STORY OF ENDGAME BEFORE IT CAME OUT
I wish more writers wrote like they did the script for alien. In it they didn't wright a single character with gender or race in mind. They simply we're interchangeable with whoever they ended up casting. That's why Ripley ended up being one of the most relatable female characters of all time. True representation isn't concerned with empowerment, because that usually creates boring characters. It's about telling people's story, no matter what gender or ethnicity the actor that plays them is.
Erimad That's not as easy when the film is based on a pre-existing property starring a female character.
@@jude4581A pre-existing character being female doesnt disable the film to tell a people story. Wonder Woman for example.
Maybe it's my shitty, priviledged side speaking, but I would say that characters that just happen to be part of a demographic that needs representation, and are written without the explicit intention of being empowering, can be way more effective in that task than badly written characters that are meant to be empowering.
Thank you
Yep, because there are no narratives that are more resonant with certain groups of people than others, that's why Killmonger could just as easily have been played by a white guy.
Oh wait.
I don't wanna see Captain Marvel beat Thanos, I wanna see Squirrel Girl beat Thanos...again.
Or Nebula and Thor, which is probably what will happen.
Tyree Brooks *I see you’re a man of culture as well* .jpg
I wanna see goose eat thanos

Shaggy is a better contender...
That story at the beginning was inspirational. Somehow, that story was more enticing and emotional than all of Captain Marvel.
I was honestly annoyed that she was treated as so over powered in endgame, because, it's just not believable
8:18 Don’t diss ‘Doctor Strange’. That movie is seriously underrated.
Jay Cunningham missed that if you hadn't mentioned it! doctor strange is by far one of my favourites! not much of a rewatchable movie, but I love his character.
I came here for this comment.
The characters were badly written and unremarkable, the plot was predictable and boring, and the villain(s) were ridiculously stupid in execution. What about it was overrated? Don't get me wrong, I love Benedict Cumberbatch, and his character was great during Infinity War, but his debut was just bad in my opinion.
Robert .Hawley
And that’s a fair opinion to have. But even though I thought his character was well written in his debut, the villain(s) were definitely bad except for the visuals done on Dormammu. The plot wasn’t what it could’ve been, but I still enjoyed it in a lot of ways. And you have to admit, the visuals are absolutely stunning.
It’s not the best Marvel movie, but I thoroughly enjoy watching it, and I can forgive a lot of its problems for that reason alone.
Jay Cunningham He’s not wrong. It’s about Doctor Strange/Ant-Man quality.
Personally, I am a Marvel fan, but DC did it better this time :/

I really dont get how people say a character 'isn't 'for you.'
For decades cinema has made characters that feel like their traits despite not sharing my skin tone, we've grown up on cartoons where characters are relatable despite not being visually like us. Static shock, jakcie chan adventures, and more.
So when a movie has a forgettable character, lacking the same anatomy is the smallest excuse on the shelf for that character being forgettable and bland. The entire point of cinema is to bring people into the shoes of the protagonist and relate to them. I've never been a soldier, a lawyer, a doctor, a whatever, so why does not being a woman keep cinema from making relatable women? From making good women heroes?
Personally my theory is that they lack examples. Everyone knows how to write a character they've seen a hundred times before. But when it comes to super powered women there are very few examples and it seems like no one behind the reigns are making good design choices.
Another glaring issue is people want a lot of different types of characters yet these movies have only a couple women to half a dozen guys or more. How are a couple of women supposed to fill in a variety of character types when every audience member has different expectations? Love and sexiness usually ends up as the most marketable trait and oops, out of women characters, cant do more.
We have generations of male characters being made to appeal to both genders, and succeeding in doing so. Its time to start doing that with women and step one is to make more than just one character so the love interest bullet gets sunk without taking out the only tits on stage.
SantaFire ` there’s the point of no relatability, and the added point that literally NO ONE asked for a captain marvel film. In the comics she’s basically a villain forced to be a hero who only wants to solve things her way. With force or power.
Who thought that was a good idea? Seriously??
@@thetruedarksoul168 tbf I didn't ask for GotG, Dr. Strange nor ant-man neither. But I love 2/3 of them now (I guess if you wanna be precise, 5/8 or something like that). Movies are a great way to build awareness for new heroes. Seems like Shazam may be that case for DC soon too
raze2012 the difference is that those characters are likeable and appreciated by many. Captain marvel is disliked by everyone everywhere.

I really hope Captain Marvel doesn't just swoop in and beat the shit out of thanos with no thought or ceremony like Superman and Steppenwolf in Justice League. Endgame should be heavily orientated around the avengers and the team and how each member must collaborate and contribute to defeating Thanos. Y'know kind of like how they did on titan in infinity war. Captain Marvel flying in and invalidating the team's efforts by just being so OP as to wreck Thanos in a few minutes even though he's SUPPOSED to be the most powerful being in the universe would really ruin the entire story the MCU has been building this whole time, as well as falling flat as a female empowerment message.
I keep telling people this because people keep saying this, but basically, there is literally nothing to worry about. It is LITERALLY stated in Robert Downy Jr's contract that his character /CAN NOT BE UPSTAGED BY ANY OTHER SUPER HERO DURING THE FINAL FIGHT WITH THANOS/. It's LITERALLY part of the legal agreement because he made them put that in there or else he wasn't going to sign on. It was established even before the script was finished.
If they do something lame, and have this new hero come out of nowhere and steal the show from him, he can LITERALLY sue Disney because it's LITERALLY stated in the agreement that this cannot happen. Basically, we know beyond the shadow of a doubt that Iron Man gets the kill shot in some way, probably sacrificing himself in some way.
It sounds really egotistical, but honestly at this point, having it any other way would be BAD WRITING through and through and there would be no way to get around that. Iron Man's character has lost so much, he has the most complicated character arc out of all of these other characters, this is HIS story more than any of theirs and HE absolutely is the KING of Marvel right now - his film literally kicked off the true MCU. All these other movies exist basically because of what HE started, and through out all these films, his loss is easily more real than any other characters. It would be just wrong to NOT have him be the center of it all in the end.
@@thoranzalarvhazen4250 well, he was probably not upstaged in infinity war, except for maybe Dr Strange. You sure they dont mean that?
@@seanfahey8485 Tony got Thanos drop a blood.
@@seanfahey8485 No, I'm pretty sure it's for his contract in End Game and it may have been agreed on even before Infinity War finished. Basically there's a line in there where he demands to get the killing blow on Thanos.
@@thoranzalarvhazen4250 I never knew that Tony's contract stated anything regarding that but I had already figured that Stark was essentially 'the' main character for a majority of the true MCU.
That being said, it's gonna be pretty sad once he departs, at least in terms of having a main role
Everyone seems to be forgetting that she’s about to be Russo’d. We should all be very excited because we’ve all seen what they’ve done for Stark, Thor, Cap, and Thanos.
Don't forget Doctor Strange, he was way more interesting in Infinity War than in his own movie. Hell even Black Panther was better in Civil War.
James true - if there’s one thing we can count on the Russo’s for, it’s that captain marvel will be a lot more interesting and if she is the one to defeat Thanos, they’ll do it in a way that isn’t completely unsatisfactory, probably all the avengers will play crucial roles and maybe it won’t be her at all
The question is, will it last?
Thor's change came from Ragnarok. Not Infinity War, that was just continuing the Ragnarok version. The same with Iron Man being a continuation of Tony Starks evolution over the past 10 years.
They definitely made Captain America & Thanos more interesting, but apparently Endgame is the Russos' last comic book film. After Endgame, these characters are gonna be in different hands.
Just look at Spiderman, first he was under the Russos for Civil War, and he was great. Then he was under Jon Watts for Homecoming, which sucked. Then the Russos again for Infinity War which was also great. But now he's back under Jon Watts after Endgame.
They could make Captain Marvel likeable in Endgame, but the real question is how long will she remain that way?
Yeetimus Prime Thor was still different in IW, he was a lot more grounded and emotional while not being super jarring. And I think it will personally, CM had the disadvantage of starting her from scratch, if the Russo’s do good then the sequel will have a better character to work with
Yeetimus Prime Homecoming sucked? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?! Bad protagonist? No, Peter is enjoyable and likable. Bad villain? No, Vulture ties directly to peter's love interest and defeating the vulture changes peters 'so life potentially forever. Bad story? No the writing was amazing. Check out some actual reviews of Homcoming before you try and use it as a tool to prove your point lol.

They just Made this movie Cause most of their characters died and they need more characters. CHANGE MY MIND.

The thing that bothered me most about the movie was how the flashbacks all featured some form of misogyny that she faced Tom she her seem like a girl boss, but nothing in her arc (or the plot I guess) had anything to do with her gender. The Cree didn’t discriminate her, they even had other women in their ranks. Her story had nothing to do Sutherland bring a woman, yet they shoved in those flashbacks to be woke. Very disappointing.
Marvel: here’s a cool character that we won’t explore at all
People: you wot
Trust me, reading the comics, Carol Danvers doesn't have much more of a personality, at least not in the past few years. Her thing has turned into that she's a woman and she's strong and she has short hair. That's where all the controversy started, boring comics that are more identity pushing than any story
I would concur. One thing that gets me in her books is how self satisfied she is with herself.
She was also a villain in civil war part 2. She fucked and older version of her son or was raped. Her comics have failed every time they try and reboot her. Original version of Captain Marvel was atleast sexy and spunky.
