Those people commenting need to look around... we have way more issues on the American that need to be addressed. Not gunna lie though... I kinda hope they close Sailor Bar soon. Give the fish that area to spawn and get rid of the snaggers.
I so agree with you, Kris. That spot needs to be shut down long ago-too much pressure, especially during the salmon season. The fish do not even get a chance to start spawning with so much pressure.
About 20 or so years ago my dad used to take me to a place where salmon would run and there used to be huge dirt piles in the parking area. Is that sailors bar?
Hey Nick I watch quite a few of your videos. I talked to you a couple times this day and didn't realize it was you. I was in the red kick boat (float tube) at about 15:30. I'm having a hard time learning this fishery. Thanks for the info. I'll put some of the things you guys were doing and see if I can get one. Also thanks for talking about the reds and staying off them. Like you said the round looking areas with the rocks cleaned up are the reds. EVERYBODY PLEASE WATCH WERE YOU WADE. STAY OFF THESE AREAS.
If you go to the bank near hazel you will get some. Go by the wood structure we’re all the people are at. I can get you the rig and stuff. I’m going to be there almost every day this year.
Your 1st drone shot is the main poaching reds that people stand on right below sailor. The hatchery side guys in your other drone shot are fishing the only deep lane in that hatchery zone thats why they get them on gear over there regularly
I’ve been fishing the American for 8 years now it’s a great fishery also most the fish that spawn naturally there offspring don’t really ever make it back out to the ocean. The hatchery is what’s really keeping the river alive
@@vanshatoutdoors7384 so close that whole section of river, then fisherman won’t fuck up the reds. Do you guy need a permit to fish steel head in American river? I check the regulations a lot, and just know the area is barbless. But some locals once told me you have to get a permit tag like for sturgeon to fish the steel head.
Yes! All anadromous rivers in california require a steelhead report card (in some coastal rivers even salmon require a report card) the american river's code is 18. No wild/unclipped steelhead can be retained but you're allowed 2 hatchery fish.
Thank you for an informative and educative video, sir! I hope that people realize that the American river Steelhead AND Salmon fishery is in big trouble. I ALSO HOPE THAT THEY SHUT DOWN SAILOR BAR! Yes, it's a good and productive spot, but in 2019 that whole area was reconstructed FOR A REASON -- to create spawning habitat for those fish.
I 100% agree with not taking fish from the spawning beds. However, if people are catch and releasing, I'm cool with it. The fishery will not depend upon this. What it will depend upon is the management of the water and the amount that is sent out during the summer when the young salmon are in the water. You can watch the flows increase almost 3x what they are now during the summer months when there are no fish spawning. What is the reason for that??????? The water is used to flush the delta out of sewage and treated water. 2021 and we still have cities dumping sewage into the water ways that support salmon and steelhead. That is where the fight needs to take place. Stop the high water flows in the summer and save it for the fall when the fish are running.
You have good point about releasing too much water at once however the baby salmon and steelhead stay in the river for over a year and the in river juveniles need the flows as well both for colder temps and so they're not restricted to the main channel. The little fry and smolts will hide in the willows, overhanging trees and bank structure. Too low of water and they don't stand a chance against the stripers and those damn cormorants
Never caught salmon or steelhead only fish in delta I haven’t caught yet, should I bank fish or troll for them?see a lot of seals thrashing them by the pge in pit.
That is one mature 19 year old. Props to him! Really interesting video, I'm from the Bay Area and it's cool to see this different type of fishing even though it's close, never done it.
To a person who never fished for steelhead or salmon it seems to me to be a DFW issue, sounds like the constabulary is at the one yard line and dropped the ball.
I’ve never fished the American River but I’m going to this year so I’m trying to absorb as much information as I can because these are prestigious fish. I’m still learning the regulations. But great video 👍
I never seem to be able to catch those big eel river fish but I do catch some of the coleman hatchery and even some wild fish on nightcrawlers and blood dot beads under a float(I think those fish behave alot more like a resident trout than their bigger kin) not sure if the wild ones are native strain, more than likely not but I do know that unlike salmon, all unclipped steelhead were born naturally in the river. This is info I got from speaking with an employee at the nimbus hatchery.
Most of these fish spawn in visible shallows and die off during the process and not come back to spawn the following year. As bass do every year and less than 20% are typically visible to the angler. Minimal damage vs lots of damage.
@@terryb1987 well for starters, bass are very well populated and invasive( i mean shit you can catch them in a ditch or canal or even a golfcourse. We could talk about the dams that killed the numbers in the first place!! We could talk about commercial fishing in the bay and ocean that LITERALLY have killed the numbers for over a hundred years!!
The new fish ladder will control the take of all the fish sitting at the wall instead of shutting the gates they take way more fish than they can spawn and sell the eggs and meat these are 100% facts I grew up on this river

Idk If you happen to see your PB go ahead and get it that might be the only excuse but hey 🤷♂️. Also anyone talking on the Man Ethan is really just being a hater.
Let's be clear. Steelhead love tailouts for multiple reasons beyond just good spawning water. With that being said, the American River is beat to sh!@%, so concern over walking on reds seems insignificant considering that there are two major damns that block the way to the real spawning areas. I don't fish that river even though I live minutes away. So those who do can correct me, but I would guess that the wild population is facing a battle that they are unlikely to win. Do people catch wild fish? Or are they hatchery misclips? Also, you take your life into your hands fishing by Nimbus. So walking on redds seems insignificant to me. But yes, stay off Redds if you can. And keep fishing the American, lol. Respect all fish and all bodies of water.

It's a special strain of wild rainbow that is unique to each river system, we all just need to do better at doing our part. No biggie bro, this includes myself
Steelhead are just rainbow trout 16inches or bigger that migrate to the ocean to live and return to the river of birth to spawn. They live for several years and spawn several times during their lifetime making several trips to and from the ocean.
