I love to hear about how the steelhead runs are almost extinct out west yet every fisherman I see on youtube keeps every steelhead they catch. Great Job
You sound uninformed. Let me help you out. It is true that on the west coast, and especially California, we are seeing a drastic reduction in wild steelhead returns. But, many rivers in the west coast, including this one have a hatchery that produces fish purely for anglers to catch and harvest so that the wild fish will survive. In addition, most hatchery steelhead go their whole lives with getting hooked or only getting hooked once because they are such smart fish. The small percent that are caught, and the even smaller percent that are kept are A) completely legal and B) completely intended to be harvested by the hatchery systems. Most steelhead fisherman, like me, have a deep respect for the fish and have no intention in harming the population and if they tell us to not keep fish because of how the returns are. We will happily abide. This river especially is a very highly regulated system. Thank you for your comment and I hope you understand better now the west coast steelhead issues.
@@Zayfish916 I may be. Let me ask you this, if that stock steelhead was to lay eggs and give birth to new steelhead would they then be wild steelhead? Do those stock steelhead not spawn? Just because they are there for the taking does not mean every single 1 of those stocked fish should be taken. Have a great day.
@@emoney7472stocked steelhead have inferior genetics and can’t always breed with wild stocks. So no, we do not want them breeding with the wild population.
@@emoney7472once the eggs are hatched the fish is technically wild but still has hatchery genetics, since the hatchery is right there there’s always going to be some sort of spawn happening there, secondly to answer the other part there are some trout that are bread for being caught and can’t spawn, here in Cali steelhead season doesn’t start till January first when the season opens for them and typically steelhead migrate with the salmon so most of the steelhead that come through that are here now are post spawn from the fall runs that came through last year, so the next group will come up with the spring salmon run so on and so forth
