So even when it seems like some are actually really on it, it seems they can never hold the intricate pattern for long.

They keep crediting a Dave for programming the original drum beat. Read Morris Day's book ("Princely Funk") and the "Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions". Prince used to come up with stuff, then SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO DO IT, then throw their name in to take credit for his work because he didn't want to be seen as doing too much. He often went uncredited for his instrumental work (for example, guitar on Madonna's 🎶Like a Prayer🎶). He made up an entire fake producer named Jamie Starr who he credited with his Time work. It's best to ask the people who WERE ACTUALLY IN THE STUDIO WITH HIM. Early 80's: Rick James even said that he purposely stole Prince's pre-programmed drums and used them for his concert (then returned them with a thank you note 😂) as revenge for how Prince "stole" his dance moves. He knows who programmed Prince's drums! Read his autobiography.

This is my favorite song by the Time and I enjoyed watching Jellybean Johnson play this live. You just killed this, brother!! Got to follow you now.
Thank You Soldier!!! Very helpful!! A spectacular gift to an old 80's era music lover!!! HEARTFELT...
Ty! Been trying to get drummers into this groove since I was 15yo! I'm 41 now!!! I twisted it up into a tribal kinda feel & use tom's where the hat part is & just keep offbeat qaurter notes with left foot.
Big ups J-Rod ... you did that. That drum pattern is fire !
Sweet , i turned my brother who's another artist on the sticks , he reminds me that he's still looking forward to anything upcoming of This brother . Lol my brother said i sure know how to locate real skills . I slap the keys around an just stuck on real passion for the game of real music an how it comes together of a genuine creation of sound

Very nice work & perfect breakdown of this classic beat. Thumbs up and new subscriber!
I knew it. I knew that it wasn't humanly possibly to execute this groove accurately. But you seem to play this beat live much better than Jelly Johnson himself. Thank you.
