This is their 1st album. Its the album that totally changed my concept of what music could be. Before this there was no dark, brooding sounds like this going on in rock. For me in 1970 it was life changing. Everything doesn't have to be bubble gum, and lollipops to be enjoyable .
This album was actually recorded in 1969, released in early 1970. Crazy to think that was made in the 60s. There was definitely nothing like it at the time.
This album was actually recorded in 1969, released in early 1970. Crazy to think that was made in the 60s. There was definitely nothing like it at the time.
I remember finding that album in my older sister's record collection. I put it on and couldn't believe how fucking cool it was. I was 14. Changed me forever.
Similar scenario here. My older sisters boyfriend at the time gave me a load of old cassettes he didn't want anymore, and this was one of them. I put off listening to it for ages as i was more into Iron Maiden at the time and the album cover just spoke 'doom and gloom'..lol. When i eventually got around to listening to it i was hooked. The album started a bit moody, but once i got to the tracks listed on this video it was on repeat for weeks. Still one of my fave albums of all time... It's a joy to watch this guy discover them too :)
The best band of all time dude. Piece for piece, way too talented. Let's do some Hand of Doom next. 3 big switch ups, insane grooves... Ozzy's cadence is out of this world on that track
I'm ashamed to say that I have never listened to an entire Black Sabbath album. I've always heard just whatever songs that were popular. I bought their debut album and listened to it on the way to work and was blown away! Bill Ward is a monster! The bluesy feel of The Warning is amazing!
Love Sabbath, but as musicians...they couldn't carry water for Zeppelin, Cream, or Deep Purple. They simply couldn't. The members of Zeppelin and Sabbath were very tight. Ward wouldn't let Bonzo play his drums because Bonzo would hit them so hard, he'd bust them every time. Fact. Heck, Bonzo was best man at Iommi's wedding! Song for song, album quality, production, musicianship...it's Zeppelin all day long.
Perhaps I didn't read far enough down in the comments, but "Warning" is a cover tune! The original song was recorded by (drummer) The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation and the original lyrics were, "I was WARNED about you, baby, but my feelings were a little bit too strong." (Not "I was BORN without you baby.") The original song is only approx. 3:30 min long, but Sabbath turned it into almost an album side! It should be called "The Warning Suite."
I love that you said that Tony is talking to you with his guitar. I always felt like he was a second voice all throughout a lot of the songs. Not just a solo here and there - but lots of great guitar all through the songs with the vocals.
I used to listen to black sabbath greatest hits on a walkman in bed every night when I was 10-11. I was absolutely terrified esp, by black sabbath and the intro to iron man for about 2 years but couldn't stop listening to Sabbath every day and still can't 34 years later.
Love your enthusiasm through the reaction! This album and song formed the bedrock of my blues/rock journey when I was about 7. I have loved and performed many styles of music, from classical to jazz to bluegrass to punk and new wave. However, at 56 I still often come back to early Sabbath. Their authenticity and artistry remind me what music is meant to do: stir the imagination and elevate the soul. Thanks for sharing!
When I saw them live on the Vol.4 tour, most of this was incorporated into an epic medley that began with my all-time favourite Sabbath song, Supernaut. My jaw was on the floor by the end.
How about this T- they were all 21 or 22 when they made this album! The long extended jam on “Warning” Is because they were given two days in the studio, and were only supposed to record a single and a B side. They laid most of six tracks down in 8 hours(!) and the producer said, “if we can pad out one more longer track, we’ve got an album here, lads”. The record company was actually a bit surprised to be presented with an album, but when they heard it, they rushed it to the pressing plant and released it quickly.
Nonsense. They had a full album ready and recorded it in 8 hours. Warning was a long cover jam, in the fashion of the time, and Rodger Bain never said anything as crass as that. Vertigo were not surprised, and were presented with the full album, and released it on the intended date 13/2/1970. Do your homework poser.
This (The Warning) is one of my all-time favorite deep cuts from Black Sabbath. Hand of Doom, Children Of The Grave, Electric Funeral, Changes and countless others are all worth the time and reaction! Easily in my top 5 bands of all time!!!
I found this when I was looking through my uncle's record collection back in the late 80s, a pristine gatefold edition. It changed my life! He was a big Sabbath fan, still is!
That cover said, "Hey, you know how music used to be? Well we got something new you won't believe." Notice the 2 different guitar solos going on simultaneously? Sabbath and many bands did this back then. That was very unique for the time (Freebird is a prime example of this technique).
I've been a Sabbath fan since I was a little kid. Literally, I was 5 in the late 60s, early 70s! They are arguably the most influential band in rock history! Their style is style being played and used today. I love blues and Sabbath is all about blues! Im glad to see you get into their vibe.
Bill Ward and Geezer Butler were originally jazz influenced. That's what gives early Black Sabbath such a unique sound. One of the most amazing FIRST albums of a band.
Another masterpiece by the creative genius Tony Iommi. Great reaction! Released Friday the 13th, February 1970. Not just more distortion, but also detuning, slow heavy riffs and string bending that no one else can do to this day. Iommi was so creative he started his own genre and subgenres of doom and even thrash. Just about everyone playing anything heavy even today can trace back what they're doing to something he created. He even started out using banjo strings until he was able to get the superlight flex strings he needed manufactured. Even modern great doom bands like Benthic Realm cite Iommi as a major influence. Metallica's James Hetfield cites Iommi as a major influence on his band's sound. Iommi wrote all of Sabbath's music and all lyrics were basically Geezer Butler. The greatest songwriting team ever, in my opinion.
So good to see someone enjoying these gems from their first album. Warning is an amazing blues/jazz fusion song. This is a song that I like to play for people who would claim to "hate" Sabbath and heavy metal. When I play it they always say "this is really good, who is it"? When I tell them, they don't believe me. Wicked World has that amazing Jazzy intro and great fills along with the harder driving riff and dark lyrics. Classic Sabbath all around!
You have to understand that there wasn’t anything around like this in music at the time this album came out. When I bought this album, I was totally blown away. I mean, the Beatles were breaking up around this time.
I heard this Album for the first time in the summer of 1970. Fifty-Three years later, it still sounds fresh and innovative even today. Their truly were masters of their instruments, and then they played together they cooked like nothing that had come before it. Thanks for the video.
For Led Zeppelin I would listen to in my time of dying but as far as Bill Ward goes he's number one in my book but he shares that title with John Bonham as well
This IS the very first Black Sabbath album. Self titled. What you are listening to is the Birth of Heavy Metal music. When you listen to this album and you keep in mind the time it came out, and what music was sounding like around that time, for a band to come around and make music like this... they were the only ones. They literally invented heavy metal with this album. Hence the dark evil vibe of the opening track. \m/

Here we are more than 50 years later and it sounds way better. And my mom said it would never last. I'm so glad that Geezer Butler went out and joined Ozzys band again well he has been there for awhile now, but it makes me happy. Much love to you and your family. Please play more Black Sabbath only with Ozzy and more Ozzy Osbourne with MASTER Randy Rhoads. PLEASE.
I love your appreciation for the musicality of all four members of the band. Usually it's all about Tony Iommi's (undeniably) ingenious guitar play, maybe also about Ozzy's distinctive voice. But Geezer and Bill were equally important for the Black Sabbath sound and songwriting.
They met over this billboard ad, OZZY ZIG NEEDS A GIG. It was posted for work by non other than Ozzy and Tony and Geeze saw it and said to each other , " This guy sounds interesting." ....History in the making.
I wouldn't say Sabbath is better than Zeppelin or Zeppelin is better than Sabbath. It's just that musically and lyrically they are just different. They are both fantastic at what they do.

Black Sabbath the band that changed music forever the bands and the millions of people they influenced what a great band they are.
Warning is basically just Tony Iommi saying "listen to all these things I can do with a guitar" and I love it.
I never realized how bluesy Black Sabbath is, I gotta sit down and listen to this album again now that I'm older. So good! 🤘🤘🤘

Great reaction video, totally agree about the blend of blues and rock. But for me, as much as I love Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath were THE Gods.
Black Sabbath are beyond the hype and the legendary status.
