Warren Haynes is a MONSTER. I first heard him when I got a Gov't Mule album and my ears nearly popped off my head in order to get closer to the speakers. His guitar work, his vocals.... I believe him to be a national treasure.
Real guitar playing. No showboating, tapping, or trickery. They feel the notes, they do not play them. Speed for the sake of speed has no feeling. Both of these gentlemen have known this for decades. The breaks in-between notes are just as important as the notes themselves. Grear Jam!
Yes-but if you want to watch a little show boating by Joe checkout his videoWoke Up Dreaming with Tina Guo. It’s a battle with Tina playing cello and Joe playing acoustic guitar-jaw dropping performances by both
Some guitarists play fast without feeling, but the great ones know that speed is just another flavor and, when used in the proper amount and at the right time, it can be super-exciting. It’s a mistake to dismiss all fast playing offhand. Both of these guys have their share of fast playing in their solos, but it’s done with taste and that’s the real difference. ✌🏼
That was Great! Been a Bonamasso fan for over 10 years.Discovered him in a little Supergroup called Black Country Communion ! Live over Europe it's Incredible!
I grew up listening to Rock/Rock n Roll in the 60's. Love the work that Warren Hayes does, but first Stevie Ray and the Joe Bona massa have turned me into a blues fanatic. At 74 I still must get my daily fix of the blues. You want to have some fun, sit down for an hour or two and watch Joe Bona massa Live at the Greek Theater. It is a tribute to the 3 Kings (Freddie, Albert, and of course BB King, who Joe appeared with when he was only about 12.) You will have trouble getting the grin off your face. Love that you are becoming an avid blues fan. It stirs your soul.
Looking at two of America’s greatest ever guitarists, period. Lots of good guitarists, a few great ones, and then Then there’s Mr. Joe Bonamassa. Total class in his worldy guitar life. I took my two boys to a Bonamassa concert for their first show!
Anything from Warren Haynes is magic. One of the greatest underrated guitarists in blues rock. Gov’t Mule is a great jam band. I vote yes! Dive down that 🐇🕳. 🎸🎸🎸 ✌🏼😎
OK, try some Derek Trucks, either on his own, or with Tedeschi Trucks Band. I’d suggest Leavin’ Trunk (an old blues tune), from their Live at the Fox Oakland. Awesome.
This is the perfect demonstration of no matter how technically gifted you are, if you can't make us truly feel the emotion of the guitar then it's just not as memorable. Which is why Warren>Joe
@@nancysmith6482 I'll give it a whirl! I'm really hoping i'll come around because his playing is so technically breathtaking, but when I see him play alongside/with/against Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, the blues just don't sound nearly as impactful and emotional to me as those guys make em sound. But also, maybe it's really not fair to him for me to compare him to those legends.
Hey brother I am totally stoked that you are going down the Bonamassa rabbit hole.. I would love you to hear Joe and Jimmy Barnes daughter Mahalia singing riding with the kings..
So glad you got to this and enjoyed it! In fact, I’m headed to Nashville tonight to see Govt Mule!! Get in that Warren Haynes catalog! It’s massive and crosses several genres!
I"m an old f$rt, 73 y/o big Joe Bonamassa fan, but really like this back and forth with Warren, a great blues man himself. I'm enjoying your reaction videos and witnessing you discovering what's old is new again. This song, I believe was made popular by Albert King. You should check out the entire Joe Bonamassa - Live at the Greek Theater concert video. All the songs play homage to three blues greats - Albert King, Freddie King and the great BB King. Some of my favorites off that concert video are this one, Breaking up Someone's Home, Going Down and Cadillac Assembly Line. Check it out - you won't be disappointed.
Joe is an otherworldly incredible guitarist, but Warren is the far better bluesman in terms of the total package (which not fair to Joe does include singing and soul)
If you listen to a Joe B song when he was just a kid, I couldn't imagine why he would ever need to practice again. But when you look at how he mastered every aspect of the guitar, as you mentioned at the beginning. It's clear what he was practicing.
Now go check Joe's version of this song Live at the Greek! The backup singers and horn section add a whole new depth. One of my favorites, and the rest of that concert is 🔥 too!
Yeah Joe has a talent of being able to hold the pic in the crook of his first finger and picking with his fingers and then suddenly grabbing the pic again is amazing😊
OMG - I have listened to the Bob Seger version of this (from Live Bullet) for decades. This takes it to another level. The guitar opening sounds like the guitars are greeting each other Then Warren starts singing and the goosebumps rise. And Joe enters, says hold my beer and it's on.. Sooo much talent.
Joe is a child prodigy...theres videos of him out there of him as a child. He would open up for BB KING,Danny Gatton .When he was 16, he was in a band called Bloodline. videos out there. Ive been watching him since 2007,saw him live 2009 here in Orlando
I've had the privilege of seeing Joe Bonamassa live and Gov't Mule live. Can I just say that not only is Joe one of the greatest guitarists ever but he is definitely THE best dressed guitarist ever!
Love it it's absolutely unmissable how brilliant these are with their guitars and their whole perception of this music as blues men goes they're top notch artists .ive seen joe bonamasa in England want 2 see him again great bloke and. Artist ? You don't 4get his shows ! Some people reckon blues is o has made a comeback ? News is it never went away !
Yes, that call and response conversation was a major course in Master Diplomacy! World peace right there! Joe and Warren are great. Love, love, love them! ❤ Be sure to check out "Soulshine", as you mentioned. Same with "If Heartaches Were Nickels". The songs Warren wrote are pure gold! I love Joe's rendition of "If Heartaches Were Nickels" at the Beacon Theatre. Mesmerizing!
Joe uses a small pick like Eric Johnson and holds it in the crook of his index finger and he moves back n forth seamlessly. So pick and finger picking can happen. Joe and Warren have been friends for a long time. You always know when Joe's into it he will "step" into it. So much fun watching friends dual and are having a blast. 🔥🎙️🎸😎
Yeah! Getting off - and we're going off listening. Magnificent performance! Love me some Joe, and hope I have the opportunity to see him one day. I've had the privilege of seeing Warren and Gov't Mule twice and it was everything you could ask for. Thanks for reacting, Sebs ❤
I kept waiting for Warren to dig out his slide and REALLY cut Joe's head. Duane Allman was the #1 slide player of all time, and Warren and Derek Trucks are 2A and 2B Bonamassa was Haynes' guest, so it sounds like Warren was yielding to him for the most part. Both of them are GREAT!
You might also want to check out Kingfish and Samantha Fish. Two young, contemporary blues players. Both are very impressive, and both can SANG like mo-fo's, too. Another video you jusy HAVE to check out, is Gregg Allman and Jackson Browne singing "Melissa" as a duet. 2 of my all-time favorite singers singing one of my top 3 all time songs. The beautific smile on Gregg's face when Jackson steps up to the mike to sing is a joy to see. Darnit- now I gotta go look that up and watch it again!
Watched this many times and keep returning . Simply sublime , masters of their craft . Thank you for reviewing. seen Joe live and tremendous just need to see Warren now and that sure would be a treat and wish come true ….Happy weekend everybody ❤❤❤
I vote yes for SoulShine. To hear it for the first time you should listen to the Allman Brothers Band version. Then venture off from there because as you know in blues music nothing is ever played the same way twice.
Perhaps more than any other instrument, the guitar was made for he blues and in the right hands you can listen to it all night long. There are so many great blues guitarists that you can spend a lifetime exploring the styles of these great artists. Great video.
I first met Warren at a biker rally when he was 20 and playing in David Allen Coe’s band. We have connected many times over the years and I cherish the conversations I had with Woody before he died and with Warren on the bus.
Joe Bonamassa acoustic at Carnegie hall mountain time is ridiculous. Soul Shine is a definite, and to hear Warren open Gov't Mule' s first album with the Acapulco Grinning in your Face is special.
The Allman Brothers were one of my favorite bands, formed in Jacksonville, Fl as were Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and Marshall Tucker Band. You can definitely hear the Allmans influence on this song. That's not a stretch since he played with David Alan Coe's band before joining the Allman Brothers playing with them for about 8 years.
Hi Sebs, new subscriber here. I love seeing your reactions and the appreciation you show for the blues. May I recommend another blues legend. The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. Kenny is completely self taught. Blue on Black is a good cut to start with. Thanks for the joy you bring to your reactions
Joe and Warren are old friends. Warren was really nice to Joe as he was in the early part of his solo career. Joe and Warren were having a blast here. Joe just produced Warren's new album on Joe's label KTBA. One can only say these guys that revel in each other's abilities in blues is so much respect for the other player. To try and out do each other but so respectful of each other. It is conversation no doubt!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥 Oh and Joe uses a little pick like Eric Johnson does. Joe was taught to hold the pick against the inside of his index finger so he can fingerpick and use the pick seamlessly and both simultaneously.
That actually IS Gov't Mule. Not just Warren. Matt Abts on drums; Jorgen Carlsson on bass; I don't see Danny Louis, though. (keyboards) Mule is a deep, deep DEEP rabbit hole to fall down. They have a bunch of studio albums, and a ton of live albums out. They also do a mind boggling array of covers, live- and do real justice to them. They're also famous for inviting all sorts of folks onstage to jam with them. Live is where they really shine.
I have watched two of your videos and hearing your reactions for one of my favorite artists in blues Joe Bonamassa, and I have a suggestion for the next one you listen to Django/Mountain time Tour De Force Live at The Royal Albert Hall and I think that you would thoroughly enjoy it check it out
Sebs, I was there! Played in the competition, but didn't get very far. This was a great guitar conversation between the two. Joe B. is definitely someone you want to see live. Take a look at he and Eric Gales together! My competition video on youtube is called Gerry Hill 2011. Sure had fun!
Blues is my favorite genre. I love rock and soul, but the blues gets me through. You should check out Stormy Monday by the Allman Brothers. It's very nearly perfect
You should definitely check out his collaboration with Jimmy Barnes on Jimmy's track "Stone Cold"..so soulful. And Jimmy's daughter Mahalia is sometimes Joe's backup singer & their version of Riding With The Kings" is amazing too
I love and enjoy music of all kinds. Music is a very important part of my life and Blues is hands down my favorite genre. If your interested into delving into the Blues may I suggest you include Buddy Guy. He's the last living of the old Bluesmen and at 86 he still tours. Damn Right I Got The Blues & Feels Like Rain would be 2 good ones to start with.
I keep telling my wife that we gotta go see him when he’s in town. I don’t want to let time go by and never see him live. Go see him live if you can, he won’t disappoint fur sure.
Bonamassa always brings the goods. If you enjoyed that, here are a few others you would probably like; Eric Gales, Greg Koch, so many great players, especially the guys that make me want to hang up my guitars like Mateus Asato and Mateo Mancuso, or even finger style players that do it all like Kent Nishimura. So many great players that can get world wide exposure on UA-cam...enjoy!
These two guys had fun obviously. Both members of my top 5 list of blues guitarists. AND i had the pleasure of seeing them live, you couldn't get it better. The recommended "Soulshine" by Warren's Gov't Mule is a no brainer. If you want to see 2 more masters, take a look at Tedesci Trucks Band "Midnight in Harlem". Derek is the best slide guitar player on the planet (imho) and the partner of Warren Haynes as member of Allman Brothers. The next guitar hero i love is (was) Rory Gallagher, Irish blues and guitar legend. Good choices to listen would be "Shadow Play", "Bad Penny", or for a slower blues "What in the world"
Endless Parade is my Govt Mule song suggestion. The guitar playing, especially at the end is sick. It ain't fair that someone can play sweet licks like that.
Joe Bonamassa has been playing professionally since he was 8 years old and opened for BB King. Yup, he's that good. How did he get this good? He has 2 musicians for parents and has been practicing 10 hours a day since he was a little kid. 10 HOURS a day, EVERY day. He still does. He says his ambition was to be the "Swiss Army Knife of guitar. You want blues, I can do that. You want rock, I can do that. You want classical, I can do that. You want country, I can do that. What do you want? I can do that." 10 hours a day. Every day. He still does it. Unbelievable.
He's incredible. I do think, if you could possibly find fault, that his guitar lacks the emotion Warren's does and feels robotic. Almost like he's a cheat code that got so good he missed the human element of playing that Warren's soul devours. It's the reasaon that I don't listen to Bonamassa records on repeat like I do guys like Warren and Trucks.
I agree. I love his stuff but don't find that emotional edge to it. Maybe because he practiced soooooo much he lost the emotional connection to the instrument. Stevie Ray Vaughan used to sleep with his guitar as a kid and you can really tell that he was connected in a way that 99.99999% of guitarists will never be.@@maxverstappen2713
Welcome to the club. You’ll never leave. Blues is the rhythm of the soul.
You said it partner . 👍
Warren Haynes is a MONSTER. I first heard him when I got a Gov't Mule album and my ears nearly popped off my head in order to get closer to the speakers. His guitar work, his vocals.... I believe him to be a national treasure.
Saw him with Almond Brothers Band ...True souther blues check them out
First saw him in '91 on the allman brothers seven turns tour...❤

Warren Haynes and Government Mule can rock the house!!! Warren and Joe are 2 of the greats!!

Totally agree. Same can be said for Joe Walsh. He plays a note and doesn't go to the next note until he has finished PLAYING the note.
Some guitarists play fast without feeling, but the great ones know that speed is just another flavor and, when used in the proper amount and at the right time, it can be super-exciting. Joe is the king of Blues/Rock… 25 strait #1 Albums on the Blues Charts.
2 of the greatest guitarists playing today, hands down, blues and country music are poor folks stories, they both tell a story, amazing

Warren was having a great time watching Joe. Look at his smiles. These two guys bring it every performance.
Agent Smith. That's hilarious. 😂
John Prine has a treasure chest of songs. You just need to open the top! Thx for doing that wonderful song!
It doesn't get any better than that !!
Warren Haynes played with the Allman Brothers for years before he formed Gov’t Mule - also the Dead.
Give a listen to Haynes with Grace Potter covering Gold Dust Women.

He's also the king of memorabilia.
OK, try some Derek Trucks, either on his own, or with Tedeschi Trucks Band. I’d suggest Leavin’ Trunk (an old blues tune), from their Live at the Fox Oakland. Awesome.
Two of the greatest! Joe and Warren have been great friends since Joe was young. They were having a blast.

I can do that."
10 hours a day.

Yes what you are describing is known as call and response. Calls with voice responds with the guitar or vice versa.
