I saw one at a Barnes and Noble this weekend and like a child went towards it with a smile and almost a hug as if to say "My friend is back!" but he looked so different I also felt sad and walked away.
I consider myself lucky to find one several years ago at a local Charity Shop here in Australia. It was in good condition, and had the original cassette tape inside. It also worked perfectly. And it only cost $4AU! The good people at the Charity Shop did not have much clue towards its true value, so I managed to go ahead with purchasing it. I also found another product based around that same technology in that same store at that same time. The Talking Mother Goose, which also cost $4AU. Why do I always have good luck with such things?

UPDATE: Yup, she was apparently supposed to be Teddy’s girlfriend named Amber. XD It’s a shame she never really got anywhere and never got to appear in the show at all. :( I would of loved to see the cute romantic moments between her and Teddy. It’s a bummer it never came to be. :( I would of loved to see more of her. :(
Rob F I agree. I’ve always loved the 80’s version of him so much better. Honestly, the only thing I like about the new version of him is his LED eyes. They look like Anime eyes to me, (especially his ideal animations when his eyes sparkle and stuff. ) But everything else? Yeah, not so much. I don’t really like his newer design or outfit very much, he only comes with three little books and you get the rest of them on a stupid app with other books you have to pay for too, (AND the fact it’s very cheap anyways because they don’t even give you that much of a range of books to choose from, only like 9 (12 including the three other paperback books he already comes with) and that’s it. (The 80’s one gave you a lot more of a range with 60+ cassette tapes and books, and didn’t rely on a cheap money making joke of a stupid app you have to pay to read them on now.) He has VERY limited outfits, only like 4 crappy ones, (The 80’s version came in packs and had a wide a range of outfits for him you could choose from,) His mouth closes WAY too early when he talks or sings, making him seem cheap and look awkward when he’s not done saying a sentence, no more tape player or cassette tapes for him, and etc. So yeah, 80’s Teddy wins all the way with me. :)
In all honesty, it’s confusing to me why they wouldn’t have referenced instead, the design in the storybook illustrations… somewhat like the costume in the ‘86 tv special. Would’ve been a HUGE improvement all around and would’ve stayed in integrity with the stories.
When I saw "origin story" I was half-expecting to find out that its Latin name is Theodorus Ruxpiniensis, and that he's a throwback descendant from something like Australopithecus. Or maybe an evolutionary bottleneck like that clown guy Ronald McDonald. Then again, he was more McDonaldopithecus. Oh well. Maybe his origin is more along mythical lines, like he descended from Eve, where instead of eating the forbidden fruit, she had eaten (and swallowed) all the chewing gum off the Wrigley's tree in the old 1970s ad before giving birth to HIM.
If it's an unairconditioned non-climate controlled facility, then it's not a good idea to keep them stored there. The extreme hot or cold temperatures could ruin those treasures, and all that wonderful material should be kept preserved as much as possible. If been restoring and repairing original WOW Teddy's off and on as a hobby for the last 15 years. I've done a few mickey's and Snoopy's too.
Hey Bryan, have you ever repaired a broken eye in Teddy? I still have mines but my brother damaged the eye when we were kids. Any repair tips would be greatly appreciated!

It’ll always be a shame to me that they went with something so hideously off-model along with all the other completely unnecessary & (IMO) ill-conceived changes they implemented (like it beginning with All About Bears rather than The Airship story and the bizarre dialogue & song lyric cuts) , rather than something that stayed true to the source material. It’s all literally there/in front of them. Why on earth would you ignore it or think of completely changing it? There was clearly a reason he was such a hit & stuck with people (myself included) to begin with, and lemme tell you, It wasn’t strictly/only the technology. Had they redesigned him to look nearly identical/as close as possible to his storybook illustrated appearance rather than stray so far from it (think something more like the costume in the 1986 tv pilot/special or how Garner Holt designed Chuck E. Cheese’s Studio C figure), nobody would have much of an issue with him. That, and if the company truly understood & respected the values, talent & qualities involved in making the characters & stories what they were, he would’ve continued to be as successful if not more than he was when he debuted in ‘85. Not to mention, it would’ve reflected in marketing, the problem is they marketed him the exact same way as every other animated talking toy on the market rather than focus on what made him ‘unique’, that being the storytelling aspect and specifically, the ‘type’ of stories he told. Sad. Nonetheless, the more historical aspects shown off here are great. I just wish that one day they’d do a return the right way and that their archives were stored & handled much better. (Think more along the lines of the Walt Disney Archives). But if not, I just hope that people can learn from this & in the future, nothing like what happened to Teddy after intially starting out so strong/great, ever happens again.
Awwwww! I had a Teddy Ruxpin when I was kid. He used to talk a the time....... Sometimes without the batteries..... it's a good thing that priest was living with us...........While Teddy was attacking the priest we were able to escape!!!🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️

I'm not sure if Phil Baron was putting on a special voice for Teddy, or if that's the way he actually talked in the 80s, but it seems that his voice has aged so much that no new Teddy stories can ever be made. They will just have to keep recycling the old ones. :o( I'm grateful I have 2 of them.
They did a special type of way of having him record and fixing the sound to make him sound teddy-ish. He re-recorded material for the 2017 teddy R and he sounds exactly the same as the 1980s version.. And if you dig on UA-cam, he recorded a Teddy R message on covid.. I can hear a little difference in the speaking voice(although I think he recorded that on his own) but when he went into song.. again, it sounded the same.

I still have my original teddy ruxpin in perfect condition. None of the ones since have compared. They need to re-release the original bear exactly how it was with some modern tech. All the people that had one as a kid are now grown with kids. They’d buy it and make it a hit again.

For some strange reason his volume knob started staticking then his speaker gave up completely. My third one lasted for about four years. He was my companion. He was at my side when I woke up from heart surgery to repair my Wolf Parkinson White syndrome. But Alas, age got the best of him and his play button would not stay down. I guess either a spring broke inside or the little release thingthat tells the robot win the tape is over became stuck. I was secretly very sad even though I was almost 16 by now. My aunt found my fourth 2XL. A store clerk had to dig him out of the stock room where he had been stored for… I don’t know how long. I took very good care of this one and by now I had about 20 of the 2XL tapes and kept them in their own closable tape case. He was still operational the last time I saw him right before I went to college but I was no longer interested in him. I gave him to my stepsister’s little boy along with all of his tapes. I kind of regret letting him and all his merchandise go now. I probably could’ve gotten nice price for him.
no, it's actually the eighth, WoW made 4 generations of teddy, Hasbro made one, Yes! Entertainment made one, Backpack Toys made one, so add the new one it's the eighth.
I'd say the digital eyes are a turn off just like when I saw the furbies flip over to digital eyes it didn't look right now if you look at the old let's go back a bit Buck Rogers TV series and you had doctor Theophilus was nothing but some blinking lights nothing special but it was how it functioned they gave it the life that people could understand with these digital eyes they're just not in a way they're not right and that's why they don't seem to have that correct feel that somebody's used to seeing one they're flat I don't care how much painting technique you throw in it they're flat eyes now if you were projecting and I onto a curved surface allowing natural light to shine off the curve of the eye and you use the digital Iris and of course move the eye a little bit to give it the appearance is looking around then you would have something that looks more normal to people but the flat eyes they're just creepy and I love horror but they're creepy it's different that's why almost every single Dolly teddy bear not all of them but a good majority of them have round eyes a couple of them you might see let's say Caroline or I forget what other movie there was where somebody used buttons from a coat for eyes but that still expressed a lot more than what the digital eyes could

I still got mine. He still works, too, and has doubled as a regular cassette tape player.

I'd say the digital eyes are a turn off just like when I saw the furbies flip over to digital eyes it didn't look right now if you look at the old let's go back a bit Buck Rogers TV series and you had doctor Theophilus was nothing but some blinking lights nothing special but it was how it functioned they gave it the life that people could understand with these digital eyes they're just not in a way they're not right and that's why they don't seem to have that correct feel that somebody's used to seeing one they're flat I don't care how much painting technique you throw in it they're flat eyes now if you were projecting and I onto a curved surface allowing natural light to shine off the curve of the eye and you use the digital Iris and of course move the eye a little bit to give it the appearance is looking around then you would have something that looks more normal to people but the flat eyes they're just creepy and I love horror but they're creepy it's different that's why almost every single Dolly teddy bear not all of them but a good majority of them have round eyes a couple of them you might see let's say Caroline or I forget what other movie there was where somebody used buttons from a coat for eyes but that still expressed a lot more than what the digital eyes could
