I’ve been thinking about getting one to mod. Not to be annoying but what year is it and is it worth it. I was honestly going to put the fishman that’s in the prophecy just in the bridge...I’m a huge tele and jazzmaster guy but idk what it is but I’ve had a sudden urge to has a les paul
You keep telling us you like metal, fine. But what do the three guitars SOUND like? İf you could pick a player or two for each one, or a period, like early classic rock, (Page Clapton ?) what sounds does the " modern " cover? Etc.
@@chipoverbaugh5919 Agreed with the finish. I could never own another Epi/gibson again after owning the Prophecy due to the tones and upper fret access.
The 59 les Paul Standard limited is the one I went for and I have to say that it's a great guitar and with gibson USA pickups and hardware it's an excellent guitar
I would personally take the silverburst. Right now, I have a awesome Epiphone Les Paul Express (A travel guitar, I'm not very big) and am saving up for a new Epiphone currently. This was very helpful, and keep up the awesome content! Also, congrats on 40k ! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I want my LP to do it all. So I'm very happy that the Modern exists. I have my Standards and my Tribute. I don't want to buy something from another company, and I'm glad they made the Modern. That said, the Prophecy is glorious. As for weight, I don't know where ppl got the idea that LP are supposed to be heavy, but LP has always tried to keep weight down (unless you mean the anchors they released in the 70s when they tried to use cheaper wood to save money). But the classic LP tone that folk always talk about loving came from sub 9lb guitars.
Mr. Go, I've been a DIEHARD Epiphone player for over 20 years now, I've sung their praises and converted many souls. PLEASE, PLEASE bring on the Adam Jones signature Custom! I would be forever in your debt. (I just want one) Thank you sir.
Of course it sounds better than the other offerings, it uses Fishman fluence pickups which are far superior to the Epiphone equivalents. In addition to this, there is bound to be more "body" after the bridge and stop bar set up. This is down to it being a 24 fret model as opposed to a traditional Gibson 22 fret guitar but with the neck meeting the body at fret 21, this makes a massive difference to where the bridge is placed. I'm surprised that you didn't make the same observations and point them out to potential buyers. As a guitar tech, I just thought that these things might have been pretty obvious. I also strongly believe that a guitar's tone is established at a much lower drive/distortion level. Otherwise who would have recognised Peter Green, B.B. King, Gary Moore and the like? Just observations, not meaning to be nasty in any way!
I just bought another LP custom silverburst. I had a 1980 silverburst custom that I sold after someone made a crazy offer for it that knew I had one. After about a year and half of it being gone I missed it and decided that if I found another at a reasonable price, I'd buy another one. Came across a guy that was considering selling his 1980 silverburst custom, he didnt have it listed anywhere, after owning it since 1984, and we came to a price, I sold a couple of my guitars and bought it. I bought it well below market for the guitar, he knew it too before he sold it. What is amazing is that the serial number of my old one to my current one is that they are 3 days apart. Both are January build with 79 components, my old one being built on January 28 1980 and my current one January 25 1980 except that this one had a black backside headstock instead of a burst like my other did.
When it comes to the spread of the stop tail on the prophecy vs the silverburst it comes down to the 24 frets and the fret spacing due to that. As well as the pickups being pushed up a little further because of the 24 frets. That is why I believe everything is moved up a little more.
The Epiphone's neck sticks out too far. It feels similar to playing the Ibanez Iron Label RGD (comes as 26.5 scale length, tuned to D-standard). It isn't about 24 frets; it's just a bad design relative the comfort of an ESP LTD Eclipse or even the standard Les Paul he has in the video.
Yep. It’s a good guitar but it looks unco at the back. Too much junk in that trunk. The 59 may be a wise decision but the modern is compelling. I guess the colour is the reason you bought it and now hate it.
I just picked up a 2001 red sparkle flake Epiphone Les Paul! It seriously looks like one of the dangerous carnival rides I used to ride when I was a kid. The only difference being the guitar is put together well, has stood the test of time, and is not operated by someone with the nickname "MethMan".
Man, such a good vibe from this video. I was looking for some reviews on the Les Paul prophecy and I found this channel. Really nice discovery. Great way of showing the instruments with passion, fun and great examples. In my personal opinion, i would like a Les Paul with only one volume and one tone, like the SG prophecy, but then again I'm not a purist whatsoever. I own a ltd eclipse ec1000 and it has been my absolutely favorite guitar since I started playing. I guess it's time for me to go and check this Epiphone.
I own the Prophecy which I bought this year. Love , love this guitar. Running it through the Blackstar St. James EL34 and two pedal boards is a riot to play
The bridge is so far up because even tho it is 24 frets they still wanted the scale length the same as every other less Paul I have an prophecy plus ex that has emgs in and I love it it is my number one
I went to check out the Epiphone Silverburst & walked away at least 3 times without trying them. When I saw them in person they looked cheap. That being said, I bought the same Prophecy & I absolutely love that guitar! I do however HATE the weight relief! That’s my only dislike when it comes to that guitar. Looking to the future, it looks like Adam Jones will be releasing an Epiphone Silverburst. I’d personally wait for that over getting the custom, Epiphone.
Hi Ray... 1st, I had to subscribe; your positive attitude is infectious! 2nd, I do not play metal (nor listen to it) but do play southern rock, blues and Christian music and your gear reviews are great. 3rd, your strength through your surgeries is inspiring! 4th, how you reiterate that it's your own opinion and your own biases. and 5th, your service, Rock on brother!
I have an older heavy AF Silverburst Epi. I got mine on a trade. I refretted it a couple years back and replace the nut to a bone. Replaced the bridge pickup with an MJ wound Seymour custom shop "Custom Custom", wound a hotter to 16.1k, alnico 2 mag. Neck is a 8k custom wound from a friend. It's the only "Brand" guitar I play. I have 16 other custom made guitars that I adore but this Epi is one of my mains. It's my beast player. Thick and huge but clear. I keep it tuned to drop C. It's my chugger. A monster. For being a "Cheap" guitar, it sounds badass! Won't ever sell it.
It's probably been covered (haven't read every post), but on the bridge/tailpiece thing - it's not so much the they just "moved it up", but it's actually 'shifted, along with the neck, less deep into the body. The extreme version of that would be an SG for example. For the Profhecy, they shifted the point where the neck is set. A combo of better upper fret access, along with having 24 frets.
i gotta say i love that solo style riff you did on the modern les paul. the song thats always in the backround of your videos. it gets stuck in my head for days man.
I own a Les Paul Prophecy of the same colour and I love it so much. The Fishman pickups sound amazing and the guitar itself is visually stunning to look at. From the colour, to the binding, to the gorgeous inlay, it’s an amazing guitar and I definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a guitar around that price-range.
Great video, earned a sub! For myself, I DO love the Probucker sound and response. They are different in frequency response to Gibson Burstbuckers but (IMHO) neither better nor worse; just different. Neither would be my choice for a guitar specifically for metal. So of the three you demo here the Prophecy with the Fishmans would be my choice in that context. That said I own a number of Epis of various configurations and love them all!
How about the active Fishman Fluent pickups, makes the guitar that much more versatile!! Push pull pots on both tone and volume. Volume push pull controls humbucker or single coil. Tone controls vintage to modern
It's simple, Ray uploads I watch. Yoooo Ray stoked on these epiphone videos recently. Cool to see a medium priced guitar you can basically hotrod to whatever specs you want.
I have 6 Les Pauls. All are Gibsons except one… the Epiphone Les Paul Silverburst. Have a 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard Special Edition Silverburst. So when this came out it was a no brainer for me. Like you, just need to upgrade the pickups. Maybe SD 59 in the neck and SD JB-4 in the bridge. Your thoughts on that… and what are you going to change yours to, IF you do? Love your channel Ray. Appreciate the language friendly (lack of cursing every other word like some do) way you speak. I feel I can actually recommend your channel to my young teenage grandsons who are learning to play.
Dude, I love your channel. Your riffs are always sick, you shoot straight and have a great no BS take on things, and you always look like you're having a fucking blast. 🤘🤘
This video just came up in my feed as I have been looking for videos on Epiphone Les Paul’s. I have been dying to buy one for a while, but couldn’t decide whether I wanted to wait to get a Gibson or go ahead and get an Epiphone. I finally pulled the trigger on Sweetwater on September 11. I couldn’t decide between the Adam Jones, the Jerry Cantrell, or the Prophecy. I finally decided to go with the Olive Tiger Prophecy. After seeing this vid I am so glad I did. I’m always tardy to the party😂
Having owned both the Prophecy is just flat out a better guitar. It has all the modern appointments belly cut, jumbo frets, 24 frets, satin back on the neck, locking tuners, slimer neck profile and of course Fishman pickups. It just feels great under the hands. Where the Custom is just more traditional like you had mentioned. In the end for the price the prophecy reigns supreme. Saying all that I would buy a silveburst again 😅 but a pickup change is a must for sure! Great video as always 🤙🏻
I absolutely love my LTD EC1000, but i almost bought the prophecy because the both sit around a grand with case. The Epiphone is a little less, both have 24 frets, stainless steel on the LTD not sure about the Epi, and of course the Fishman Fluence pickups rock! Love the content bro keep doing what your doing. Lets try to hit 50k in a month? That would be badass.
To me, and an agile seems to be the better guitar. I have a front and back bound, double cut silver burst, with an access heal, an asymmetrical neck, splittable coils, satin finish, for 600, that is just, a killer guitar. I just keep falling in love with it more, every time I pick it up. Best sounding guitar, best playing guitar, I own, and I have some fine ones.
I very much want that silverburst custom. I'm an Adam Jones fangirl but I'm not a huge fan of the aged silverburst or the teardrop shape of his, but if I could get an un-aged, actually silver one and put in a Seymour Duncan Distortion then that'd just be perfect
a lot of people are gravitating towards weight relief. Nice demos, Fishman Fluence pickups are awesome, I just got a SSS set to put in a strat. Here's my prophecy, an Epiphone Les Paul is in my future!
The inspired by Gibson, all day! I can't stand the stock pickups either, but that's an easy fix. There's just something about it's weight and resonance. A modern, light Les Paul is an instant no-go for me, since the weight is one of the things I like the most about them
The Prophecy's bridge is higher up the body in order to compensate for the longer 24-fret neck, while still maintaining the traditional 24.75" scale. Because the 24-fret neck is a bit longer than a standard Les Paul, that would add to the scale length if the bridge were kept in its typical position.
I wish Gibson and epiphone would upgrade the hardware a bit more. Give me stainless frets, locking tuners, more pickup options, and a tusq nut or something similar.
Hey Clint. Our Inspired by Gibson lineup has GraphTech NuBone Nuts as well as Epiphone's Lock Tone TOM & Tailpiece. As SMR pointed out, the Prophecy's do have locking tuners.
DUDE! I didn't even notice the bridge sitting up further when I was looking at this Prophecy LP. That makes me want it even more as I tend to dig a little too deep with my pick sometimes and this gives a nice open area.
I’ve got a ‘94 Korean epi. I guard it with my life. Sold my two gibsons to a friend because I never played them. My stage backup is an Epi custom pro in koa.
I hear ya Ray. I love the Les Paul. Sold my SG so could get an LP Std. Suits me better . I love how you get those metal tones out of one. Great playing!
I bought an Epi 1960 Tribute Plus in 2015 it is a phenomenal guitar,it has Gibson wiring, pots,hardware,Classic/57 pickups and Griver locking tuners.I still love it! IF you can find one grab one! That's a nice Silverburst axe!
I own a 21 black beauty epi LP custom and absolutely love it. Just ordered a tigers eye epi LP prophecy. I’m gonna ditch the fishmans and throw in the Jim Root EMGs I have laying around.
Good review bud.I have a Gibson “black widow”..I am inspired to pick up one of those silver burst …pick up swap so I’ll send you the link to mine..from your inspiration bud!!!!stay metal bro
I might be getting a les Paul for a friend, so this video is helpful. Was wondering if the prophecy sounds have a voicing like a traditional Les Paul? I guess if they truly sound like a PAF pickup.
It's pretty contradictory to say that you prefer LPs with traditional specs and then to say that your favorite one is the Prophecy. You funny haha! Love the visuals of the silverburst.
You are the first reviewer to acknowledge that the Prophecy feels different because the bridge is moved forward. I disliked my prophecy at first because of that. I've suspected that it actually effects the resonance of the guitar, my Les Paul Modern is acoustically very loud where my Prophecy isn't. Now, that could be strings but both with fresh strings the Modern was still louder.
I will be fully transparent. I've not been a Les Paul guy. In terms of how they felt. I love the look and loved the fat tones. But a few weeks ago I went into a local Guitar center. And they had a prophecy, modern and a standard one. And the neck profile actually felt really good on all 3. The satin neck on the prophecy was the best feeling. I was very very surprised at how much I liked those 3 epiphones. So I'm now waiting for Matt heafy to release his next year as that likely will be the way I go. Out of the 3 you have I gotta admit. I'd take the silver burst. Aesthetically it's so dope looking. I'd swap in some bare knuckle pups and locking tuners and call it a day.
The Epiphone Les Paul Custom Blackback Pro in antique ivory is the best! I totally love mine! Plus the fact it looks like Randy Rhoads' Les Paul or Steve Jones'
dude i got the Epiphone LP Classic (worn cherry burst) have played her aloooot in 1 year and DUDE .....she is sooooooo good. feels perfect man. Pickups are decent and i trip out on how good it plays. 10/10 dude for sure. so i got the inspired by gibbo SG and then a Dove acoustic. yeah,, epiphones okay in 2020/21
I have a question for you my friend: I'm interested in getting your patreon tier with the skype lesson but I live in Finland so the time difference is big, is this something we can work around? And also, in the music theory for metal do you have any bundles with more than one lesson/chapter per purchase? thks o/
additional note... I realize now that the Prophecy Fishman Fluence pickups are active so require the 9 volt battery which is a no go for me. I love the sound of my Ovation VXT with active Fishman humbuckers, but do not like the active battery requirement. It's just another thing to be cautious of when playing live, and always needing a back-up battery.
the bridge of the prophecy is placed there because og the 24 frets and the 24.75 inches scale , they needed to move slightly the bridge to fill the gap of the 2 extra frets ;)
I just had to ship back that same prophecy only red and black one.. it was horrible.. 4 or 5 high frets and from about fret 15 on up the were scratchy and needed polished in a bad way.. now may e I just got a bad one I dont know because I had to order it as there weren't any around to try out.. just my experience.. from what I hear most people like theirs.. keep on a rockin ray.. great vid bro
I adore my Prophecy, same olive finish…. Though I did make some modifications…. CHANGE those ugly knobs!!! (Sorry for yelling, CHANGE THEM!!!). Also swapping the bridge pup for fluence modern, oh man so good!!!! (Fair warning the stock pup is not quick connect 😠). Love my Prophecy!!!!
Where is the fourth push pull.? My Gibson has four. I love my Gibson modern. The ebony board and locking tuners is a must for me on anything. Great video.
Lol. Hates modern features on LPs and repeatedly states likes most traditional… Then bam- most favorite is the least traditional. Means that guitar I just that good or not to sure what you like. Ima give the benefit of the doubt and say the guitar is just that good… I’ve been wanting one myself.
FWIW, I think the regular LP Custom sounded better than the prophecy. I am kind of looking at the prophecy for my next guitar (I just can't get over that red burst), but will probably throw a spare set of EMG 81/85 that I have laying around. Those Fishman's just don't do it for me for whatever reason. I want to see the Epi Adam Jones to find out if it will be a "rim burst" or the "tear drop" silverburst finish. I really dig those riffs you were jamming to.
My V prophecy is awesome. Three different voices is great. But the all black Les Paul version is way better than the red one. I agree it’s not the best color. Should have done a purple one like the explorer version.
@WaurufEx Even through a legit Amp like his Mesa, something just sounds lacking. Maybe it's missing that low end that I'm used to hearing. Sounds more like a PRS. Then again, maybe that's the point of that guitar.
i have 4 LP styled guitars. Only one of them have the original probuckers cause my daughter bought the guitar for me and I wanted to keep it original. They sound ok, not my favorite. My others have either EMG 57/66's or Retrocactives. I really like the Retro's. I just wished they came w/ more colors w/ the cap, like the brushed gold, gold, and the chromes and blacks. Man glad you talked about the placing of the stop tail piece of the Prophecy.. that's weird.. is it a little more uncomfortable to play?
I got a 2011 les Paul from October from some seedy guy on offer up but wow what a guitar All the electronics failed me within a week Swapped them out and reworked it myself and it sounds god like I play a lot of 50s pop and rockability and I can get the exact same time les Paul himself would get or Scotty Moore feom elvis band Amazon money for quality
The first one looks a lot like the one Adam Jones from Tool plays. The last one, and maybe I didn't catched it but it ofcourse has fishmans! They seem like great pickups.
This video made me buy a prophecy. And I’ll say, a year later, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my playing. 10/10
I own a Silverburst Epiphone and it has such an incredible sound specially for bluesy stuff
Hands down the most beautiful finish on the planet..,I’m so jealous🤘🏻
I’ve been thinking about getting one to mod. Not to be annoying but what year is it and is it worth it. I was honestly going to put the fishman that’s in the prophecy just in the bridge...I’m a huge tele and jazzmaster guy but idk what it is but I’ve had a sudden urge to has a les paul

Yep...unfortunately they discontinued them.
Thanks for the descriptions. My next guitar will be an Epi Les Paul: Probably the Silverburst... know what I mean? :)
its a very good 👍guitar.
I have 4 epi customs and all of them were well made.
1 elite series MIJ
2 Matt heafy Limited
1 sliver burst.
good luck!

I'm a simple man. I saw the Acherontia styx on your shirt and I clicked.
a lot of people are gravitating towards weight relief.
Please add the 1959 Epiphone Standard Les Paul to this comparison too!
I know I'm late to the game..............thanks for making this video. I really enjoyed it and found it to be helpful.
The tail piece is up higher to keep the scale length the same as other les pauls i think. Because its 24 frets they moved the tail up.
I’m super excited for the new Matt Heafy signature Les Paul Custom. Out June 2022
June are you sure ?
@@spich1116 that’s what Matt said
Let’s Save our cash for the MKH .. !! he’s keeping guitar, metal and genuine awesome guyness alive for us all
I‘m waiting so impatiently for the new MKH 7 String….
Senator.....love the suit. 💀🖤
@@AljonGo awesome now how about those stainless frets ;) There aren't many standard production single cuts currently shipping with them
DUDE! I didn't even notice the bridge sitting up further when I was looking at this Prophecy LP. That makes me want it even more as I tend to dig a little too deep with my pick sometimes and this gives a nice open area.
Just bought my son a prophecy awesome guitar he's only just learning so I'm no 1 dad at the moment he loves it
I’ve got a ‘94 Korean epi. I guard it with my life. Sold my two gibsons to a friend because I never played them. My stage backup is an Epi custom pro in koa.
I just bought the modern.for me it's the best sounding of the three.
I hear ya Ray. I love the Les Paul. Sold my SG so could get an LP Std. Suits me better . I love how you get those metal tones out of one. Great playing!
All one needs is a Les Paul and a Telecaster and you can play it all.
@@christophercarty675 Well said!
I think the best would be the custom silver with just a bridge pickup change🤔
What I don't like about the look of the Prophecy series is the matt finish. Sunburst should be glossy.
I just wish the epiphone silverburst was in the same shape as the prophecy. It's less of a burst and more of an outline.
Wow. That Prophecy’s pickup covers are unique - kinda Z. Me want. Now.
I bought an SG prophecy.... it's a great guitar, the pickups are really versatile.
However for £800 it should be come with a gig bag IMO
I'm kind of surprised they didn't do a silverburst for prophecy series. As hot as both are right now it would have been a perfect merging
Right? I would buy 3 of them
Good review bud.I have a Gibson “black widow”..I am inspired to pick up one of those silver burst …pick up swap so I’ll send you the link to mine..from your inspiration bud!!!!stay metal bro
I've got the 60s model hate the cheesy fake top, so I bought the Classic in Honey burst it's a freaking Beast I love it.
im sure somebody said this but the tail piece is higher because its 24 frets to keep the scale length the same
Totally agree Les Paul’s should weigh a ton don’t mind the locking tuners though cos I’m lazy
Supposed to get my prophecy delivered today
Like the Epiphone modern looks, but the appointments of the prophecy better with the locking tuners
Wow never noticed that bridge so far up before!!
The Prophecy is basically an ESP LTD EC-1000
Perfect timing!
I do have a Epiphone Les Paul and I adore it is a very great guitar it's probably 10 years-old though
I haven't owned an Epi LP in a good long time......might have to try one out soon
I have mod Plek’d and love it
Hunt out a epi 1960s Les Paul tribute plus ..all American hard wear and has the Gibson 57 pups😀😀😀
@@christophercarty675 I really dig the red burst. Glad you found a guitar you like!
I like the prophecy and the modern but that silverburst is sick too idk epiphone les Paul's are my favorites for sure so I kinda can't hate.
i have 4 LP styled guitars.
I got a 2011 les Paul from October from some seedy guy on offer up but wow what a guitar
All the electronics failed me within a week
Swapped them out and reworked it myself and it sounds god like
I play a lot of 50s pop and rockability and I can get the exact same time les Paul himself would get or Scotty Moore feom elvis band
Amazon money for quality
I adore my silverburst
Thanks for the info. I’m in the market for an Epi LP
The first one looks a lot like the one Adam Jones from Tool plays. The last one, and maybe I didn't catched it but it ofcourse has fishmans! They seem like great pickups.
