The Guitar I Didn't Even Know I Wanted!! || "Inspired by Gibson" Les Paul Modern Demo/Review
How's everyone's quarantine going? Quick reminder... big announcement coming. April 9th, 2020. 18:00 CEST. Follow my IG and mark your calendars 😉
April the 9th is my birthday
YES ! That Agufish Signature Harley Benton FINALLY GETTING RELEASED !
Hunter! Does this feel like a normal Assymetrical Slim Taper neck? Not like the D shape on the Custom right? Its the one thing I need to know before buying it!
had my first beer at 10:30 this morning bruh. time means nothing. play guitar constantly. it's fun in a weird way.
hi! 8 weeks of lockdown here... trying to improve my poor guitar skills
I find it impressive from a marketing standpoint that it's been possible for Gibson and Epiphone (and Fender) to get so many variations from a guitar that's been the same shape for the last 70 years give or take.
I wish companies made more new designs. Like the musicman st vincent model. Its such a great design but I cant think of many other examples of brand new guitar designs in the last 20 years.
@@pahwraith look up lava drop, they're pretty sick, just expensive af, they're based off Lithuania
What's even more impressive is how they have such good marketing that they can convince people to buy a custom shop and other high end models that are virtually the same guitar as a cheaper one like this. I understand the quality control is better on the more expensive ones and often the pickups on the more expensive models are better... but times are changing...to where these differences are very minor now... for some models anyway... some cheap models still suck in comparison...
Don’t forget that those custom shop guitars are having hand selected premium wood used. Other lower cost options are made as fast as possible without the care to hand select and match woods etc.
@@astro2069and don’t forget the wood is of little influence on the tone. It’s just great marketing.
15:50 As a wiring guy and electrical engineering student I can tell you that it would have taken almost no effort to include the full Gibson wiring in the Epiphone. Pure bypass literally means you take the pickups and wire them directly to the output jack bypassing all the extra wiring like knobs and switches! It would have taken them like 4 extra wires at most to implement it, so I'm kind of baffled they didn't! Imo there are two possible reasons they didn't include it:
1. Epiphone didn't want to spend the money on an extra push-pull pot.
2. Gibson are dicks and didn't allow Epiphone to include the full wiring scheme in their Les Paul Modern so the Gibson version looks more "advanced".
Thanks for the explanation
I bought a 2020 epiphone V and completely re-wired it... its tits now
yeah, it's most likely B
I'd wire it in myself. I don't use the volume or tone knobs anyway and for the sake of only 1 extra push pull knob, hells yeah!.
Because they are buasinessman not musicians at heart
I love how he goes through EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE COMBINATION of tone with the push pull knobs. Absolutely AMAZING effort put into these videos. I love you Hunter!
I just picked one up on Reverb for $500 bucks. It is an AMAZING guitar. Loving the tonal options, finish, look, sound and feel. Just a GREAT instrument. 🤘😎
When hunter drop two demo’s in a week “somethings wrong I Can feel it”
Don’t get used to it. This is the quarantine content bump 😂
It’s just this feeling I’ve got like I don’t what is what
Bought one a few months ago. Definitely impressed with the build, sound and playability, If you covered the headstock and asked me how much it was I would have put it in the $1500 range. Plays way out of its league and won’t break the bank.
I just bought one today, I got the Cafe latte color, it is an awesome, I play a Gibson as well but I like this one because of the Grover lock tuners, those are awesome to!!!
Friendly suggestion: Get a digital scale for roughly $20. Knowing the weight will add detail to your guitar reviews. If you want to take it a step further get a caliper for measuring nut width and neck thickness at the 1st / 12th fret. Both items would be a very small investment and would help educate your audience. I would love to hear those details in your reviews! Keep up the good work man!
TJ Heaton Great Suggestion! 😃
But then Trogly would be out of a job...
I agree weight of the guitar is an important statistic for me
@@JIMIIXTLANMy Epi LP Modern is 8lb 3oz, a comfortable weight. That seems to be at the upper range of the modern. With all the weight relief routing, that must have started out as some heavy mahogany! My first Epi LP Standard (solid body) was 9lb 10oz.
just got mine in this morning from sweetwater in graphite black, absolutely in love with everything about it but the pickups. they’re not awful but just lacking life. i plugged my ‘95 gibson studio in after playing for an hour or two just to see the difference, was kinda shocked.. but i couldn’t agree more about the fishman’s, they’ll be installed soon. i have them in my sc-607b obvi and i’m still blown away with the sound every single time.
I love watching your channel more than others because you're not hating on epiphone the whole time and then giving them some slack when there's something good! You treat them just like any other brand!!!
At this point I just see the notification, click the vid, hit like, press play, and enjoy.
Very nice Mr Fish
Appreciate that :)
@@agufish We appreciate your hard work and dedication to be a decent human being
I've been having fits trying to decide between the '59 re-issue and the Modern. I wanted the '59, because that's the year I was born, but the asymmetrical neck and ebony fretboard on the Modern had me questioning my choice. I despise "clubbiness," to _any_ degree. After hearing your demo - mainly the clean segment - the deal was sealed. I'm going with the Modern. And though I wouldn't have hitherto considered it, I'm definitely going with the blood-red. It is f*cking stunning. New Subscriber, 100% (I have no idea what the 100% means, but I needed to show some added respect).
Did you get a Modern? How is it?
@@John-- Yes. The best purchase I ever made. It is flat-out the nicest electric guitar I've owned in 50 some-odd years of playing every vintage instrument under the sun. I even tried a couple of recent Gibsons alongside it. I couldn't find a single advantage to the Gibsons and the fit and finish of the Epiphone was noticeably better. The finish and selection of wood (I decided to go with the graphite rather than red due to the ebony fretboard), especially the back, is spectacular, in my estimation. The probuckers are close enough to the early PAF's so as not to be noticeably different (low-gain), and the locking tuners are always worth it. A spent the extra money on the matching hardshell case, which I highly recommend doing. Don't fret over the lack of a compound radius. You're never going to miss it. Cheers, mate.
@@maekong2010 Awesome, I'm glad to hear it! I just now ordered the graphite version, can't wait to check it out! Cheers!
@@John-- You shan’t be disappointed. My email is in my “about” section if you have any questions, especially after the purchase.
@@John-- A further bit of unsolicited advice... Get yourself Some D'Addario Hydrate for the fretboard (follow the instructions) and a set of D"Addario EXL110's. I've tried everything including 9's and the same sizes in Ernie Balls. This guitar was made for the EXL110's. Give the fretboard a treatment and a new set of strings _immediately_ after you get'er home.
I like how the Moderns are shaped more like the Gibson. Especially the horn and top contours. The red finish is nice.
Older Epiphone Les Paul also have a true maple cap but many have a figured veneer covering. Check out Trogly's Epiphone demo/reviews, he shows the maple caps under the veneers.
Are you a Troglodyte ?
LOVE the asymetrical neck profile! I have a 2008 Les Paul standard with the asymetrical neck... It feels sooo comfortable!!
Reall great and honest review! Kudos. I was torn between this, the tribute 60’s or an PRS se 245. You made me go back to the store and try all 3 back to back!! I’m going with this, in same color, because the blue was out of stock. This is really versatile, good feeling guitar. Thank you!
That new headstock makes me love the old one. I have two epiohones (custom) and the new one is even bigger and taller than the old.
Thank god it's bigger and taller!
Agufish is my favorite guitar youtuber. Please never change. I love how you are an Epiphone fanboy like me. I love your segways for your sponsors, its almost like youre ashamed you think youre gonna be labelled a sellout lol.
Dude, you're showering us with content! My wallet isn't gonna like the end of the month (I'm a patron).
That being said, I want this guitar now.
Haha appreciate your support helping me make content that distracts from the absolute shitshow happening out there! You can set limits so I don’t take away your emergency toilet paper fund 😛
I always wanted an alpine white les paul. But saw this on the gibson website. Now i want this!!!
I bought one last night and I F'N LOVE IT!!!
Color?
Yes indeed Hunter . You nailed the cleans & As usual stayed true to form with a touch of gain . I bought the guitar you’re playing. I am an epic epiphone player , also purchased it to
Give A huge nod to Epiphone. Love the Burgundy, black Pup rings , pick guard and the ebony
Fingerboard! I lowered my action & put the Black speed knobs on . Great content and channel , Great future . Thanks and please keep these m coming
I was one of those guys that liked the videos but never really liked your choice of music style or tone to review these guitars - although I never complained in comments as why would I, different people have different tastes -, and I am going to say it is starting to grow on me. I will never be a fan of this style of music but I appreciate your playing.
I have that exact same guitar in Pelham Blue. Great Guitar!
Cant wait for the harleybenton signature
Yeehaw!!!
Hunter bumps up his upload schedule during quarantine so I hit like and comment to appease the algorithm.
all hail The Algorithm. Praise be
@@agufish gotta do my part to appease the dark lord
Perfect sequel to the last video. Glad you love it.
Great tune man ! Really dig the riffs ! Awesome video as allways!
Was about to save to get my first Gibson...but I guess I'll just buy 4 Epiphones instead xd Nice review Hunter, thanks for the hard and honest work!
I've been savîg to buy a real Gibson for 20 years. Never did.
When i get to the store i always end up with a cheaper guitar that actually sounds just as good.
Just remember: Guitars make sound and bring joy; however, they are also an INVESTMENT, at any price point. Death is inevitable. Leaving a Gibson to your heirs is better than leaving an Epiphone.
@@creativejourney8356 Dude, that's basically a lie. The only guitars that go up in value are the oddball models that no one wanted to buy, therefore there aren't many available on the used market, like a Vixen. Your off the shelf Les Paul Standard or Custom is not an investment. They lose value the moment you buy them.
@@wentle1985 Meaning your family will be able to sale for more $$$$$ upon your death, because Gibsons are a more valuable "asset" than an Epiphone / they are "worth" more. I DID NOT mean that's it's an investment for the original purchaser of the instrument. I would rather inherit a Ferrari than a Honda, despite the fact the Ferrari depreciated a higher dollar amount than the Honda.
@@creativejourney8356 haha ok.
I have the red one by Epiphone. I love it! I'm an SG guy. I enjoy this guitar. Sure the Gibson has a few better switches, and pick ups. Not $2000.00 better! To me it's extortion. $500.00 better is more accurate. Epiphone is owned by Gibson, to me it's a reasonabley priced Gibson. The guitar is impressive no doubt! If you're in a big rock band making a crazy amount of money touring about, a $2000.00 down payment suitable for a $60,000.00 car on a Gibson is A ok. The Epiphone is a great guitar for the money!
i know these are probably better than the epi 50s standard les paul but i just can’t sell myself on the colors over the classic looks of the goldtop. and i really like the neck on the 50s
I just bought the faded Pelham blue one. It is absolutely nuts how well above its weight this guitar punches with upgraded pickups. The stock probuckers are kind of bad, really shrill treble and no definition in the low end on the bridge pickup somehow simultaneously (I can even hear it in this demo) But with a Dimarzio Dominion set it brings out the grind in the mids, and tightens up the low end.
Go take your commercials somewhere else!
JK, thanks for the tip! ;)
I am a little late to this party but find this model interesting enough to comment on. Firstly, excellent job on the review. Secondly, I am liking quite a bit about this new "Modern" model. The only changes I would make are personal preference. I would pull all the electronics and go with my prefered EMG set up of an 85 in the bridge and ? in the neck. The neck pickup depends on the guitars natural tone. Then all it needs is a satin finish on the back of the neck. The rest is pretty solid.
Keep up the good work and playing. You're awesome Hunter
Now, review the Modern Figured Caribbean Blue Fade ❤
That colour is gorgeous!
Sick! Also I need that link for your signature model
I'd definitely change the pickups...I've always found probuckers to be very muddy.
Clear knobs on a non-white guitar are a big no. I would go with Black chrome tops on that guitar. That would look great.
I have the Modern in Pelham Blue, lovely guitar. Will probably put black knobs on it (match the pick guard/pup surrounds). First thing someone said when it arrived was...those knobs look cheap 😂.
Imagine a les paul with schecter's c1 headstock. Tuning issues solved plus it would still look classy enough for when you want to feel and look like a gent 😆
Man I love your show keep up the good work
MMMM, Pelham blue... love it! Great review and great guitar. Frikken sounds superb in the mix too, let alone!
Thanks for the awesome review and gas as always! :)
my next guitar- which colour to choose. Thanks for excellent review.☮🖤🎸🎶
So it's been 3 months since this review, what are your thoughts on the guitar now? I ordered one for myself, so I interested to know.
What are your thoughts
opinions?
I’m ordering one.. just have to decide on the color. I normally don’t like red..but that burgundy just screams classy…. Normally I’d go for a flametop but the style that’s offered on the “Figured” version just looks weird. I can’t imagine it being at all desirable if I should ever decide to sell….(IE:Most definitely a flash in the pan!} What I’d really like in a solid color would be a classic Gold Top….
Check the Caribbean color its a beauty i have it :3
What did you go with?
Hunter, your leads are getting better and better. Really nice solo!!
Pretty much the definition of versatile. Neat!
I got a 92 les paul standard, special edition metallic red. Paid 200 from a friend . Had to take a little bow out of the neck, it has black trim on keys . I like it. Iv seen them on ebay for around 499. I'm liking epiphone too.
I’m waiting for the Gibson Les Paul custom ebony shipped on the 27th from the factory it’s my bucket list awesome playing there my friend😜
How is she ?
@@benallmark9671 she's beautiful it rings even when disconnected from the Amp very heavy but that's how they are😜
I'm more of a classic rock guy but that intro was banging. You rock mate.
Just want to send some love. I really enjoy your videos. I can tell you enjoy what you do. Thank you for your content and hard work.
Great video as usual mate.
Yep it sounds great because of those good pickups.
I know of a 2011 Epiphone LP STD that came with Gotoh hardware & Seymour Duncan JB's that the seller didn't even advertise & sounds just as good as the one in this video.
Thanks again, all the best.
You should check out the Harley SC-400. It's €119 and has gotten high praise.
Bridge Split neck humbucker.............devastating................what an awesome instrument..........
The tuners are super, the intonation and so forth, sounds spot on.
Love the weight relief and those added touches that make it a good instrumant
....................O___o.....................
thx

I'm going to be getting the White Pearl Les Paul Muse soon. I can not wait!
I want either the blue one, the 60's sunburst or the custom. I might wait on the custom if they put out a silverburst down the road. Also interested in the prophecy series.
I would LOVE a silverburst Custom from Epiphone with this headstock. Especially if they actually made it the same burst as the Gibson customs. It’s the only reason I don’t have one. But I too want the Pelham blue in this one. Super cool
You might wont to consider removing the rear control cover during your reviews to show the quality of pots/wiring? Just say'n. 🎶🎸
Great video! I bought the Epiphone Les Paul Muse. It's freaking awesome. I want the Modern just like the guitar you demonstrated.
Nice presentation with the Epiphone...Maybe the best mix ive heard from you..Stay hard fish!
Hunter, I trust in your demos and reviews. Thank you for giving us a great reference and resource to go to. I have bought a few guitars after watching your reviews. Thank you for everything you do.
Looking into a new guitar for metal and was considering this one. Great review.
I have a Lp studio that came with the same tuners in 2017, and the only advice is the string changing. Maybe it took 2 years before it stayed in tune because it is a Gibson, and the epi is going to be better right off the bat lol. Anyway, again, good job man!
My Gibson LP Studio wouldn't stay in tune even after I put Grover locking tuners on it. My EPI LP Custom Pro (less than half the price of the Gibson, on the other hand,, stays in tune like a champ.
I love that biting tone distorted.
Very cool review. Nice guitar.
Nice demonstration.
Struggling between this model and Epi’s new Muse line - which one sounds better, which is lighter? Need a comparison!
Since the specs look pretty much alike apart from Alnico Pro and Probuckers...
Nice video, great playing.... however, guitar straight to the amp, no extras. That gives us the true flavor of the guitar.
Awesome intro man
1/ I have 2 gibson les Paul’s , traditional and classic.
I’m getting away better sound from my modern than is on here.
Honestly there is no discernible difference in sound between the guitars I have, yes really!
If you have a problem with the sound it’s not the guitar it’s your amp!
Got my modern for 490 gdp from Wembley guitar centre.
Brilliant build, just get it. Just get, end of.
I bought one it's super
Man those split coil tones keep getting better and better each year. Love the content.
I bought the Pelham Blue Modern,,, I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its Dream!!!! Sounds Better than my last Bibon Classic easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ive Been Playing for thousands of years ( 35)
Badass riffing there man. Great work.
Bought my second Epiphone yesterday. Tony Iommi sg !☠️☠️☠️
Aww man, I so want one of those and then I'd get this one. Having said that, gotta sell some gear to get even close to owning either. What's the Iommi SG like, any problems?
It’s a dream . Bought if off a guy in Asheville nc. Sounds great, plays even better. He bought it from Sweetwater
I was considering getting one of these, I already have a Gibson LP Standard. I also want a more modern take on the LP but don't want to spend a ton of money. Now that the PRS SE 594 exists, I think it's worth the extra money over the LP Modern.
Dang. Gotta say, your playing, recording, and production is getting pretty dang good! Very nice!
Ure choice of range of music for tone demonstration I'd lacking for distortion... it's literally just metal. Get a bit of classic rock in there and blues But I love ure videos!
Yup. His clean tone is soulless garbage, too.
He's a metal guitarist and most of his viewers are too, clean tones can be found somewhere else
Dude great track and video. That fresh cut tho looking superb
I already pre-ordered this in cafe latte fade.not supposed to be in for a month or so still(covid delaying alot right now😥)beyond stoked!
I think the biggest thing that typically turns me off to Epiphones is the ears chopped off the headstock. This one though...I could own one. Looks pretty damn good. My biggest thing is playability, and I prefer Schecter myself. I’ve never played a bad Schecter (unless it needed a setup).
if a tree falls and no one is there to hear it we have found the best place for agufish to play live for the first time ever!
JK I just want high praise of the week
Just got one. Mine is the figured top in Caribbean blue fade
Dude, your opening song was awesome!
What do you think about the Epiphone les paul modern figured carribean blue fade? Is it the same as this just different colors? Great video btw i was shocked when i saw your sub count you deserve way more, great videos man thank you for giving us content during quarantine
Insert Semi-relevant Dean Cadillac reference / joke here. Look, Fish, you’ve been pumping out way more consistent content since the quarantine. Never thought I’d have to come up with this many Dean Cadillac references and jokes this consistently. (Serious Ask A Fish Question: how do you think recent Geopolitical tensions will affect the future of Chinese made instruments?)
great riffs! sounds as good as half the bands out there! keep rockin!!!! :)
Finally chunky song for inroduction. Latest ones weren't yout level but this one is dope
Fantastic Epiphone !! Metal sound incredible !! And biutiful color !!
Good specs and good looking in that colour; but what were they thinking with those clear plastic control knobs 🤔. Easily replaceable though.
Good review :)
I bought one and love it :)
Two uploads this week? Hunter are you okay?
I know, right? C R A Z Y
You actually had some nice post rock meets sparkly pretty stuff vibe going. I dig it.
It's been a year now, I wonder if Epiphone has figured out that you don't wrap the strings around the pegs on locking tuners...
I have been waiting for this forever. I always wanted a Gibson but i just don't want to spend that kind of money.
I hesitate between this and the worn purple but since it will be my one and only les paul probably for the next 10 years i feel this lne has that "classic" flagship type.
its really good looking guitar,,im kinda torn between CUSTOM the MODERN,,i do like the thinner neck and it being less weight....oh my..im so confused!
The knob unevenness I have on my Epi Bjorn Gelotte as well. Literally just noticed it this morning. They're not even push/pull. It doesn't really bother me as I realize it's an Epi and it can't be perfect for that $. No way in heck I'm spending even over 1k for a guitar. As even the high range Gibsons that cost 3k + sometimes come with finish issues. Every big band that started out started with an Epiphone and then when they got big bought a Gibson.
Hunter... any idea if this "Vintage Sparkling Burgundy" is the same (or close to) the red that Epiphone used on their Les Paul Royale from a few years ago? That was a stupendous, deep metallic candy apple red. I loved it and would snatch this guitar up quickly if it was the same color, or close, to the Royale.
I ordered the white one because I’ve always wanted a white guitar!
compared to the epiphone custom, which one has the better neck?
It's been two years now. Has your opinion on it changed any?
