Am I the only one who has noticed that Jessica sometimes leaves A LOT of room above the model, like in the picture at 7:57
Is that a legit technique or is it like supposed to be cropped out later?
To my eye it just seems so weird because the model isn't in the center and there's so much empty space there at the top, I feel like there should be something visually interesting going on if you're gonna leave that space there. Am I making any sense?

A Tinity The model doesn’t have to be in the centre. I don’t know if it can be called a technique, but she’s definitely leaving that space on purpose. Otherwise she would’ve cropped the photo during the editing, before putting it in the video (all the photos shown are clearly edited). I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, it looks a bit more “spaced out” I guess and some people find it interesting or visually pleasing

A commercial artist is different than a fine artist.

    • @steveleeart
      @steveleeart 4 роки тому +2

There are also fine art photographers and pro photographers, some fine art photographers started doing it professionally then moved into fine art cause you can make more money working in a professional studio. I know my photography is definitely not reliant on studio trappings. When I photograph people like friends I like to do it when they don’t know I’m necessarily photographing them. I want them to be natural and not posing. It’s resulted in very nice portraits. Two friends who are now engaged, I shot the first photos of them together on the first day they hung out. A group of us went out and at one point they ended up talking and they looked so sweet, off by themselves and I started snapping away. They still say those photos are the favourite ones they have ever had done of them. It’s work that’s definitely leaning toward a snapshot aesthetic. They want me to photograph their wedding! Which was supposed to be this year... but with covid? Anyway. We will see! I’ve gotten into self portraits this year and yeah, it’s a snapshot aesthetic but I’m trying to subvert the selfie by documenting myself in both good and bad light - like the good and bad in life. I was really sick early in the year and I’ve been dealing with depression too. So that’s formed part of my narrative. I try to make sure I’m authentic. I definitely think like how the painter thinks like as soon as I saw the blue tiles I was like yeah! I’ve studied with some amazing portrait photographers including Douglas Kirkland (that was an amazing week). I kinda want to go out this year and get better at directing people. I also love natural light. I hate wedding photos though lol, I’m apprehensive of doing my friends wedding but I might do it. I have a mutual friend who I’ve taken courses with and she’s like me in terms of style and I told her I want her to help if I do this.

Not true. Or maybe true in a very wide philosophical perspective. As being both - artist who uses mainly photography and a photographer i can tell they are quite different. That is what most people confuse these days - they are both professions. They are not honorary titles. And this video actually brings out the differences. To be called an artist you have to work as an artist. I do both - gallery shows and i am a working photographer. This video is perfect example how different these worlds are and how different the approach is. As an artist i have ample of time to shoot a person. Most of art projects are long. Galleries usually operate on a yearly programme basis, so if i apply for a gallery today the earliest time i get to have an exhibition is 2021. so it leaves me tremendeus amount of time to actually do my project. I dont mind if i do 6 shoots a month and get only one picture i like. No pressure on me. So i can play around, i can try random stuff. i can go as nuts with my ideas as i want. But as a photographer my job is very different. Clients have deadlines. Booked locations, models etc have rates that they have to pay inc. they have to pay me. I know that i have to deliver. And i have to deliver 2 pictures of each outfit that are superb and 2-6 more that are ok and decent enough to use. Minimum. Most of clients do not need your artistic insane ideas, there are handful of poses that work and they work mostly on everyone (and most working models know them by heart) So photographer always does them first. Always! So that you have atleast those covered, then - if you have the time you can play around. Sure there is a difference who is the client and how the job is but majority of works work like this (or in case of catalogue shoot model gets roughly 10 minutes per outfit and you fire away same poses all over again). In case of events, you cant as a photographer stop the event - so you fire away more shots to be sure. you act very fast and be constantly on your feet. In the video we see those same differences Angelica has that typical artistic CBA attitude, and she takes her time to observe the model. Jessica works exactly as professional photographer works. She first delivers and then plays around, and if time gets short she fires away ( the part on stairs) because as a working photographer you have to deliver. Two different professions and two different approaches. A (photo)artist is no better or worse than a photographer. Just a different job. But people sure love to confuse those two professions. Artistic eye is always an artistic eye. Idk if Angelica has art education but usually painters have, if not uni level then usually some regular art school level. Jessica, i think, studied graphic design in art uni. I have a degree in photography. An i saw before and i see now in art university that people from art school: designers, painters, sculptors, photo students - they all photograph kind of similar way. Studies in art, perspective and that enviroment pushed creativity has done its work. In this you are right artist just uses different medium. But approach to work - Jessica has more of a pro photographer in her apporach than artist. And it is not bad thing, she still has her way to see stuff, it is just very different working method - regardless of medium.

    • @ana-maria8350

Mr Nobody I think all the differences you’ve mention come down to “fine artist” vs “commercial artist”, not neccessarily artist vs pro photographer.

    • @beccagee5905

To be a painter, you need to know composition, color theory, lights and darks. A painter also needs amazing photo references, or to paint from life in order to create the best paintings possible. In college I took a class in black and white photography. Although I had never taken any kind of photography class before, my background in art, pencil rendering, and painting made photography easy for me. Easy in the sense of knowing composition, the balance of black, grays, and white, and a dynamic focal point. However I was never competent enough with a camera to create an out of focus background to bring more focus on the subject of the photo, or to take action shots. What I did learn about pencil, ink, and painting did transfer over to taking great photos to use as references for painting. Although I would have liked to be able to take even greater artistic photos, painting is expensive, and priorities, so yeah.

That's because the right side of the brain is the creative side, where as the left side is in command of language. Keeping time is also done on the left. This is why painters will lose all track of time while painting. Talking to others will pull an artist out of that creative mode. However long time artists can more easily and quickly enter back into it.

I think it took a bit for Angelica to get into the groove. But the artists eye came out in the second set. She used the blue background which worked much better with the second outfit. She also used the leading lines of the stairs (great artistic concept) along with the models very long legs. You could tell with her second set that she brought that fine art knowledge to the shoot. She also tended to shoot from below more which accentuated the models height to make it even more dramatic and powerful.

Reminiscing my first photoshoot with my canon rebel t series camera and kit lens, and how awkward it was lol. Jessica, I think you have to press the "Q" and then use the scroll wheel thingy to change the aperture! Awesome job from both!

Can you please do a petite model challenge series? Male and Female! We don't often see a lot of models under 5'5! They are just as beautiful and deserve to see themselves as such.

I don't know if anyone has asked for it, but can you make a video with suggestions and guidelines of how the photographer should instruct the model to pose, where to place hands, positions. I always find it very difficult to give correct instructions to a model. I've never worked with professional model ( I assume they already know this stuff ), so this would help a lot.

Both photographs has great composition maybe the only difference is in the technicality. I don't think the painter use DSLR a lot but nonetheless it was good.

I like Angelica's photos more. I feel like in the first location the felt when a camera should look at the subject from above or from below. In the second location she found more interesting backgrounds to me.

Hi jess, I really love your work and value your opinion as a photographer. You’re one of my biggest inspirations. I was just wondering if you have tips for beginners transitioning into using manual rather than P or A mode? I’m really intimidated and always worried about missing the shot if I try manual
