greetings from 2024, just found this, and WOW, am blow away by the beauty, simplicity, depth of the performance. Thank you Ric for this great performance. RIP brother
This version is simply amazing, I wish Ric would make an acoustic album with all the great cuts the Cars did. A big thanks to who posted this up. Ric Ocasek is one of my personal favorites.
Yes I am guilty of playing his music over and over until I got sick of it and then all this time later and I am doing it again. After he died I have gone over it all again and I now can see why I loved them from the start of it all.I was a teenager when they first came out and now at 58 I love the music just as much.
Excelente versión, suena perfect, Rick Ocasek, trasciende en el tiempo con esta hermosa interpretación, un deleite a los oídos (que agradable escucharla).
So beautiful, there is an innocent anguish in the layers of his voice. More perfect voices don't hit the same heartstrings. Almost like Winnie the Pooh's voice 🤗
I have always loved this song, and this acoustic version is so beautiful I just saw The Cars in Boston. Ocasek has a beautiful voice, different from Benjamin Orr's voice. Still, my favorite band because they were different and had great diversity in their songs.
Listen to this Talent! He didn’t even need a band. Amazing! Thanks Ric! You will be missed and remembered! This is painful for me since I’ve been a Fan since 1978! I grew up on the Cars and the Police! Even though your gone now your Music will live on! RIP Ric and Ben-Two Great Singers! Maybe your Reunited up there in Heaven now! That would be Nice. 🔥💥🎸😎
I never knew Ric could play acoustic guitar... RIP Every time I hear this, I think of Adam Sandler reading Valentine's Day cards in 3rd grade in "Billy Madison"... this is a beautiful version :(
The test of a great song, one singer, one acoustic guitar, if the song still captivates it's not all hooks / bells and whistles, but a truly great tune.
Back in the early 70's when Ric and Ben were doing two man shows with just an accoustic guitar and bass, I can imagine they did just this scenario more than once, and possibly with this song too.
A great version of a great song. Rick sang with such a sense of irony, both in his voice and his lyrics. .................he is sorely missed. This is such a classic.
the studio recording of this with the keyboard stuff with Greg Hawkes was pure mesmerizing and utterly melancholic & prefer this better with Drive , but this acoustic version done by Ric, brings it more closer to intimate and deeper somber mood and ambient to it....thank you for the music sir...will surely miss you.
Holy smokes! I am a HUGE Cars fan, and I really like their sound. I generally prefer the produced, electronic style, but this is really good. Ocasek does an excellent job with just a guitar and a bass line.
It's heart-rending to lose your music heroes. R.I.P. Ric. Thanks for rocking my childhood and teen years. You and Ben can now continue to make more music on the Other Side of the veil. Looking forward to hearing new Cars material again from you both someday.
AmusedChild yeah, I know. I live and breath the cars. Not the same though as if they did the cars hits. I do like the way they do “everyday” buddy hollies song, before they formed the cArs
>Ocasek has a beautiful voice - I agree, but it took him all the way up 'til the Shake It Up album (from which comes this song) before he really hit his stride. For the first three albums, he had this *affectation*, a sort-of "bratty" tone. Then came Shake It Up, and from "Since You're Gone" to "Maybe Baby", he sang with much more heart, and a sort of purity emerged. He sang "I'm Not The One" especially beautiful, and "Why Can't I Have You" from Heartbeat City is another good example.
I'm finding that these "Acoustic Sessions" seem to be much more intimate.....and in this particular case quite sentimental too....I'm Thankful to have been around as a Passenger when The Cars were driving up and down my Street as a youth back in The MTV Days.....Stay Strong All
Oh you're SO lucky!!! A strange irony that I had tickets to see them in Sacramento.... couldn't believe I got them......but they split & cancelled the concert. A deep and abiding disappointment in my life ☹️😊🤗. hoping there is a reason for it in the timeless cosmos lol
I just read in Rolling Stone online that the Cars have finished a reunion album. Ocasek said half the songs would have fit Ben's voice and since they wanted only original band members working in the studio he just sung them himself rather than get an outsider involved.
Tru dat. At least for the verse. But honestly, the chord progression is in a million songs, and I can;t believe I'm saying this, but I think the vocal line is more interesting than Dear Prudence.
is there more to this, is this taken from something? i would love to hear an entire set of Ric doing songs like this. i always love this stuff because you get to hear what the song actually sounded like when Ric first presented it to the band, and then you get to see what the other guys added to it and made it the great song we all know and love.
Many people don’t know that both Ocasek and Ben Orr began as a folk singing duo in the 60’s. They (and their songs) were repackaged as quirky, New Wave with the help of a new band and PRESTO...The Cars were born!
greetings from 2024, just found this, and WOW, am blow away by the beauty, simplicity, depth of the performance. Thank you Ric for this great performance. RIP brother
It is the sign of a good song when you can strip it down to its minimum, and it still has all of the emotion, and greatness of the original.
What an amazing artist...So sad he’s gone now. What a beautiful version of this song. It’s beautiful.
17 thumbs down? Really? 17 people out there who have no clue what good music is.
Ric will never see this note but as a fan I'm saying "thank you". I wish he knew how much has music has been a part of my life.
The Man was a poet.
Full of magic little word combos.
Great Voice
Gentle Soul.
Artisto Magnifico.
This version is simply amazing, I wish Ric would make an acoustic album with all the great cuts the Cars did. A big thanks to who posted this up. Ric Ocasek is one of my personal favorites.
This song brings me to tears, his guitar playing is Brilliant!
I love this version.... The Cars are vastly under rated =......
Absolutely
Cars were huge man! But agree with you.
RIP Ric. Your music are timeless. Rock In Paradise man.
This song gives me chills. The cars are musical geniuses..way too underrated
I love this version. R.I.P. Ric, thank you for all your music. You will be missed
Beautiful song.
Listening to Cars songs after Ric's death and it's all coming back to me how much I played the hell out of their albums.
Same here. And I'm missing them a lot more now.
Yes I am guilty of playing his music over and over until I got sick of it and then all this time later and I am doing it again. After he died I have gone over it all again and I now can see why I loved them from the start of it all.I was a teenager when they first came out and now at 58 I love the music just as much.
He was an amazing songwriter and performer. I miss the Cars so much!😢
how time fly's,it was just yesterday's, rest easy RIC, you'll be missed.
That was so beautiful. RIP Ric.
Ric, is a true musical genius ! In a class all by himself. This version is so serene & lovely. 💙💟💜
Ric is a better musician than a lot people give him credit for....this version is superb.
What a musical genius of a man! This is one of the few live acoustic versions of a song that equals or exceeds the original!
railbuggy 🚤🚤🛥🚤🛥🚤🛥🚤🏯🏰🏯🏰🏯🏰🏯🏰🏰🏯🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗🕗
We'll said! I love this version as much or even better than the original 😍❤️😍❤️
RIP Ric, you will be missed (9-15-2019).
My heart is 💔😓♥R.I.P Ric Ocasek to sing for Angel Now and Forever..Brazil 18/09/2019.!!!
I have always loved this song, and this acoustic version is so beautiful

Thank you, Ric, for this beautiful piece.
Wow, clean and simple and absolutely beautiful.
I never knew Ric could play acoustic guitar... RIP

Never got a chance to see the Cars. I missed out big time. They were great.
Great music but lacking stage presence. Maybe the most boring concert ive ever attended. Nobody in the band moved more than 2 feet. Yawn.
Ha! The ORIGINAL shoe gazers! Saw them in ‘81-‘82. It was a good show.
Hey, just came across this song in 2024. BEAUTIFUL!!! 🎇🎇🎇🤗
A great version of a great song. Rick sang with such a sense of irony, both in his voice and his lyrics. .................he is sorely missed. This is such a classic.

Some songs really demonstrate how great they are when played with just one guitar or solo on a piano.
I hope the cars tour one last time so I can see them live, they are my favorite band.
My favorite Cars song! A beautiful version. I'm in tears.God bless you're shining soul! Rest in Peace...
I've always wished The Cars would have done a performance for MTV Unplugged. This is truly as close as it comes. Thanks for posting. Excellent.
A true musical genius and sorely missed. RIP Ric...
RIP Ric, you will be missed
Holy smokes! I am a HUGE Cars fan, and I really like their sound. I generally prefer the produced, electronic style, but this is really good. Ocasek does an excellent job with just a guitar and a bass line.
Wow what a killer version of a killer song. Thanks R.O.
A great version of a fantastic song by one of my favorite artists. We miss Rick!
Beautiful acoustic version of a great Cars song. Thanks and RIP Ric!
It's heart-rending to lose your music heroes. R.I.P. Ric. Thanks for rocking my childhood and teen years. You and Ben can now continue to make more music on the Other Side of the veil. Looking forward to hearing new Cars material again from you both someday.
The purity of good music comes through with a single instrument. This is a great version.
Awesome!! Man, I wish they would have done an unplugged acoustic concert back when Ben was alive.
Orrphan That is such a great idea. Alas.
Si, impresionante voz, al igual como era la voz de Benjamin Orr.... geniales los dos ...
Before the Cars, Orr and Ocasek were in a folk band called Milkwood. UA-cam has some of their songs.
AmusedChild yeah, I know. I live and breath the cars. Not the same though as if they did the cars hits. I do like the way they do “everyday” buddy hollies song, before they formed the cArs
Ocasek should do an acoustic album of Cars songs.
>Ocasek has a beautiful voice

Listening to this was a real treat, The Cars Forever!! :)
R.I.P. Ric :(
Rest in Peace, Ric.
A seriously under-rated songwriter.
RIP Ric.... Thanks for many many years of great music.....
I'm finding that these "Acoustic Sessions" seem to be much more intimate.....and in this particular case quite sentimental too....I'm Thankful to have been around as a Passenger when The Cars were driving up and down my Street as a youth back in The MTV Days.....Stay Strong All
Time Machine Brought Me Here...Thanks a lot for sharing.
So simple but so unbelievably great
❤always until the end of time Ric and the Cars.
God speed Ric rest in peace
The best of the best....Rick Ocaesek...RIP.
Holds its own even stripped down. Beautiful songwriting.
Wow, back in 1982 I was blessed to see them at the L.A Sports Arena.
and yes I get sentimental.
Adios a un ENORME y Único ARTISTA ( ira pronto
a reencontrarse con su antiguo compañero Benjamin Orr ) !!
Goosebumps
One of the greatest posted videos I've seen on youtube. Beautiful and pure. Thank you.
genialll ric ocasek!!! maestro!!!!
I just read in Rolling Stone online that the Cars have finished a reunion album. Ocasek said half the songs would have fit Ben's voice and since they wanted only original band members working in the studio he just sung them himself rather than get an outsider involved.
Just...wow.
Beautiful. I keep listening again.
So sad he is gone.
RIP.
The Beatles could have sung this song and have reached the top ten inmediately ¡
They did. It was called Dear Prudence. Same chords, bass run, etc.
Tru dat. At least for the verse. But honestly, the chord progression is in a million songs, and I can;t believe I'm saying this, but I think the vocal line is more interesting than Dear Prudence.
The Cars > The Beatles
is there more to this, is this taken from something? i would love to hear an entire set of Ric doing songs like this. i always love this stuff because you get to hear what the song actually sounded like when Ric first presented it to the band, and then you get to see what the other guys added to it and made it the great song we all know and love.
Fantastic version of a fantastic song.
He was happy to do it. ;-)
Un maestro como pocos. Gracias Ric.
Just beautiful. God I miss music.
Lindisima rola...gracias, Ric Ocasek
a true artist. thank you for this beautiful song.
Excelente version Mr Ocasek!!
Many people don’t know that both Ocasek and Ben Orr began as a folk singing duo in the 60’s. They (and their songs) were repackaged as quirky, New Wave with the help of a new band and PRESTO...The Cars were born!
Extraordinario!!
Soar in Peace, Ric, this made you real right here.
Un grande ric ,desde argentina un fans fiel!!!
Se te echa en falta rick ocasek
Absolutely beautiful!
You are the one, Ric - my rock’n roll hero.
wonderful
I forgot all about this song, it's an excellent choice for an acoustic version. Ric was one of my favorite 80s artists. RIP to him and Ben
I really miss this band now
80s music.....compare it to today.
@OneManArmy Mike No comparison. Love everything about the 80s !!!
No comparison. I hesitate to call the majority of modern mainstream stuff "music". The Cars were the real deal.
Best song ever !
My sympathies to the young people who missed the '80s.
I love the song very much
Talent was deep ric! Damn !
I just love this version. Melancholy and simple...see, Ric can be sincere and pure when he wants to be.. very touching melody.
VERY COOL..HE WAS SO AWESOME
this is so much better than the studio album version.
Beautiful ❤️❤️😍 RIP
LOVE IT........UNPLUGGED
RIP Ric !! love their music this is great !
Love this!! Ric sounds great here.
This was better than the original. Thanks Ric.
One of my favorite songs. Absolutely beautiful.
One of my quiet favorites of all time....
