I grew up listening to music without knowing anything about what I was diving into...Just CDs with album art, lyric sheets, and the beauty of the music. Doing "research" on a song before listening isn't something I am used to doing, as the music always came first for me. But if there are other Nightwish songs I should check out that require research, let me know! Thanks for taking the time to check out my video, and let me know which Nightwish song I should look into and react to next!!👇

I understand. One does generally not prepare that way before going to a concert or a play. One does before going to an opera. (at least, i do). Knowing the background helps understanding the storyline. Nobody warned you that the Greatest Show is an opera, Poet and the Pendulum is opera, with heavy guitars and double base, but still most definitely opera. The other reason for preparing for nightwish songs, like this one, is that Tuomas is a poet who does not write lyrics in a self explanatory way.

@@andrelglinnenbank2856 That makes sense. As I said in the video, opera is not a style of music I am familiar with, but Nightwish definitely seems like a gateway into that style of music.

This song was/is approved by his widow.. She heard it before it was released. He was on the astronaut program as a astro-geologist but during training it was discovered that he had Addisons Disease and had to be dropped. He died in Australia heading to a newly discovered crater in the outback. A 1 gram of his ashes were sent on a lunar probe.

Just do whatever you are want & ignore the complaints :) Any good song should be able to stand on its own merits anyway. Knowing more about a song may help understanding what it is all about, but it does also create a preconception.

I think knowing that Shoemaker is the only person whose ashes have been (partially) buried on the moon would make some lines more understandable. The are in a crater close to the south pole. So in a place of eternal Earthrise. Hence "Tucked in for eternal earthrise and wonder". There are also references to the Romeo and Juliet quote throughout the song. Knowing these things could have had a positive impact on your appreciation of lyrics to the song, even in first hearing. There are a couple of songs where the nighwish army suggests doing your home work before listening. This is one of them and there is a reason for that.

@@ianlauerastroreacts3495 You already did the greatest show on earth, generally this is advised to research, but most things that are mentioned in this song you should know. Like how the solar system was formed. The other main subject is evolution and the early history of the earth. I assume you knew that too. So for well educated scientists there is not so much need. If your background is, say, music, perhaps a little refreshing is called for, but, we don't supply links and everybody is on their own for finding references.
The other one that you preferably do some background on is The Poet and the Pendulum. Because that is about events that happened before you knew Nightwish. This is the firing of the First singer Tarja and the backlash towards Tuomas. That firing was not handled very sensitively, but I have not heard anyone with a suggestion on how to handle it better that convinces me. Lots of hindsight. Just as in a wedding, if not both partners agree that the marriage has come to an end, fighting will ensue and the kids (we as an audience) will suffer. This was Tarja and Tuomas first divorce, so a lot of rookie mistakes were made on both sides. If you are the number one band in the country, people will join in and point out what you did wrong. An overdose of that is not mentally healthy. For preparation: there are open letters by the band and by Tarja explaining why divorce was either inevitable or should have been postponed.
Most other songs that require background are science oriented, so no problem in your case, I assume.

As far as I intrepid the lyrics, it's directed at the moon itself ("a sailor through aeons", "a ship that sailed home") according to the capture theory, with the male voice (Troy) speaking for the moon ("here I come to stay")
Gene Shoemaker was mainly specialised in meteor impacts both on earth as on other celestial bodies, especially the moon.

You might not realize this, but this one of the most difficult songs to ever try to duplicate. It is so tight and so hard vocally to sing that only floor could pull it off! She is amazing and so is the band. The rhythm section must follow the snare drum rolls to the tee. That is not easy to do even as a 40 yr veteran on guitar. I tried to follow and play along with this and it is a nightmare of perfection. Nightwish is a phenom like no other!

@@ianlauerastroreacts3495 This song stunned me live. I didn't know it well. They went through several I knew and it was amazing, and then they came to this. It was an indoor venue in NYC. Not that large, but an open room with three floors that could hold around 3000-4000 people I am guessing. I was told the acoustics in there weren't great, but I got a tip on the best place to stand for sound. The drums hit, and push my shirt into my chest, closing the little space of air there on every hit of the drums, and her voice was even more powerful than I expected, from watching other reaction videos before I went to the show. I was close enough to the stage to see her expressions really clearly. She got to this part and no way did she even need a mic. This studio track doesn't even come close. I can't even tell you. I do have a small clip that gives a better idea, but not even that comes close. My friend heard the start of it and after a bit captured the end of it. I was too stunned lol. Floor is the most amazing singer I have ever heard. Not just her range, as there are some out there that have a wider range, but her tone, agility between styles.

You see an earthrise when you're orbiting the moon, but from the surface, the Earth barely moves in the sky. It would be permanently floating on the horizon at the spot where Shoemaker's ashes are, hence the "eternal" earthrise.
Floor's voice in the 'Laudato si' is created with a technique called passagio . . . singing between her vocal registers. That she can do it this well, with this much power, is remarkable.

Well, it is _eternal_ earthrise... and the Moon wobbles so it is bit more complicated...
_An earthrise that might be witnessed from the surface of the Moon would be quite unlike moonrises on Earth. Because the Moon is tidally locked with the Earth, one side of the Moon always faces toward Earth. Interpretation of this fact would lead one to believe that the Earth's position is fixed on the lunar sky and no earthrises can occur; however, the Moon librates slightly, which causes the Earth to draw a Lissajous figure on the sky. This figure fits inside a rectangle 15°48' wide and 13°20' high (in angular dimensions), while the angular diameter of the Earth as seen from Moon is only about 2°. This means that earthrises are visible near the edge of the Earth-observable surface of the Moon (about 20% of the surface). Since a full libration cycle takes about 27 days, earthrises are very slow, and it takes about 48 hours for Earth to clear its diameter..._

He was supposed to go to the moon (worked with NASA) but an unknown dissease prefented that to happen. it was his biggest dream to be on the moon.
He crashed in a caraccident (1997) and his ashe in an urn (with the poem of Shakespear on it incripted) was sent to the mon, to his crater. He is laying in rest on the moon.

When I saw astronomer in the title, I was excited to have someone react to the song, who would really understand the song lyrics on a deep level, only to have it reacted to by someone who knows very little, very disappointing.

I will always blind react to music without researching, as it is where I find joy in the discovery process...the music always comes first! Now if someone specifically requests I look into a song's background before listening, I'm more than happy to oblige...but this wasn't the case with this song! Hopefully next time someone suggests a song that deserves research they'll let me know :)
Thanks for watching, I appreciate your time!

If you like Nightwish, please check out a new heavy metal band from Japan (formed in 2016) called Lovebites. It's an all-female band with two phenomenal guitarists who are as good or better than all the male guitarists who came before them. Check out their song "Holy War" live from Zepp Divercity. I did like your reaction. But I do take issue with the word "earthrise". On the moon, there is no earthrise. This is an error in the lyrics. Due to gravitational capture, the moon has stopped rotating relative to earth. We only see one side of the moon (remember Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd). This means that on the dark side of the moon, the earth is never seen. On the light side, earth is always more or less visible in pretty much the same spot. No moving of the earth from one horizon to the other. It just shows phases like the moon does to us.

And it is not error in the lyrics, it is *_eternal_* earthrise for this very reason.

Looking back at this song and it's meaning, I'm curious why that lyric was used. You can get an Earthrise on the Moon if you are in a particular spot, as the Moon also wobbles on it's axis. Perhaps the lunar crater Shoemaker resides on is within this are of the Moon that experiences Earthrises? I'd have to look that up!

@@ianlauerastroreacts3495 I believe he is buried near the south pole in a dark crater, I was unable to find anything more specific (and have not really tried that hard), but it should be in that area where "earthrise" is visible.

@@ianlauerastroreacts3495 It is an eternal earth rise.... so his ashes must be in a place where you can see a part of the earth over the moon horizon....forever. You could debate if it is an earth rise if it is in a (nearly) static relative position...

Stop being pedants - and try to appreciate the poetic lyrics. The alternative is never understanding a Shakesperian quotation !

If current "astronomers" are completely missing failing their homework to just focus even more on the drums than on the lyrics and vocals - sorry, no sub and I had even to take back the regular thumb up i give at the beginning of a video, too. Disappointing. If this is the standard, we have ourselves to blame for projects like starlink and more and more light pollution. It should not be the watcher's job to give the "astronomer" the backstory.

Thanks for your time checking out my video!
