So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission. The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ). "Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Tmesisternus floorjansenae: new species of beetle named after Floor. Song from Human. :II: Nature and it is a Masterful Album !!!! NWSU 🤘😎🤘.
Eugene Shoemaker and his wife were driving up in the far north of Australia when they were involved in an auto accident. Eugene was killed. His wife was almost killed but she did survive. His ashes were transported aboard NASA's Lunar Prospector Mission to the moon and left in a crater at the south pole. Nightwish band leader Tuomas Holopainen wrote this composition to pay tribute to the first ever planetary scientist.
I believe Shakespeare wrote in the iambic pentameter, groups of five. Romeo & Juliet was written in this style. But you're dragging me back to my school days, which would be around 1958/60. . . . . . . . . 🙂
I am not good in counting, but the rhythm reminded me of Tschaikowsky's devil waltz (2nd set in his 6th symphony) and a few pieces by Michael Nyman (Tuomas seems to appreciate him aswell) which are written in 5/8. And this would suit Tuomas' way of thinking and composing... And was a wonderful throw back to my lessons in music in the late 70s and 80s 🤪
I adore the end section to this song ....... the part where Floor throws her arms open reminds me of a general giving a biggin up speech to the soldiers going into battle ....... she is such a powerful woman n so very beautiful with it ....... i love Nightwish 🖤🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
We were all in shock when we heard that ending when the album came out. I was even more shocked when she did it live when I saw them here in Norway. And now I got myself some tickets for their show here in Norway again this summer. They are headlining Tons Of a rock. 😁🥳🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 So time to be amazed by this band again. 😍
A happy and healthy New Year to you too! Welcome back, I've been missing your Nightwish reactions. 'Shoemaker' is a simply gorgeous song. I've seen them perform this song live 5 times last year and it's hard not to be affected by it. Goosebumps, chills and lots of emotions. Looking forward to the next reaction. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Hi Martine, I know what you mean. I've seen this live a few times now also and it got me, down to earth Dutchie, tearing up also. So emotional and beautifuly performed.
Laudato Si Ad Astra..a Song towards the Stars..something like that. We were there. Nightwish Army Austria, Vienna. Yes the Show is pumping you up and also want you to sing but also staying calm at How's that Heart. (Slow Acoustic Version) where Floor had to caugh once cause of the Mist ..in Budapest or wherever it was
Always great to see you back on Nightwish. Happy new year to you, too. The ending to this song is just out of this world! (Appropriately). Keep coming back to Nightwish.
Floor doing Floor things to Toumas’s music. Absolutely beautiful! Great reaction. Sad song. Emotional song suggestions Sabaton - Christmas Truce Aurora Murder Song 3 2 1
I was lucky enough to see Floor perform this live at Wembley Arena last November, and as 48 year old guy, even knowing what was coming, it got and I teared up. It was definitely one of the hightpoints of the show for me.
Great reaction to this wonderful performance by Floor. Troy was doing his thing with the ebow on his electric guitar in the middle section and then Floor kills the operatic ending. It always chokes me up with emotion. Thank you for this wonderful reaction. Nightwish is always best doing live performances and this was a great one.
Wright, there latest album Human and Nature is a state of art. Every song is a highlight. A recommend you their whole album. Greeting from the Netherlands🇳🇱
I think if I had ever felt the same in a church as I did live several times this year in one of the front rows during the end of that song ... I would probably have become a priest ...
As Human Nature album was released, a few weeks after, Floor asked some fans, what songs from album they would like on setlist, this was one of those the fans asked for, at first Floor actually said, its not really a concert song.. well maybe she was a bit scared to perform this ending..lol, no no not Floor are you kidding.. she also did it, and its actually a great concert song now right, and on every setlist to i think..
Under any normal circumstances the main body of Shoemaker would be a very good number. For so many of us it is merely the prelude to LAUDATO. Only Tuomas would compose a song to incorporate Shakespeare and Latin. OnlyFloor ensnares your very soul when she ‘goes operatic’. Love your reaction. Yes very easy for your emotions to take you over.
Yes it's Nightwish reaching in finding parts of you like no other. Tuomas found his shangri-la when Floor joined Nightwish and brought his imagination to life 🙏👍😊♥️
This is also exactly why we love Nightwish so much. This song also seems to be largely about the person Eugene Shoemaker, Tuomas also inserts aspects from his discoveries. Such as Eugene’s interest in the objects that caused them, and set up a long-term research program. In this program his wife Carolyn showed a talent for discovering small differences on photographic plates. The search resulted in the discovery of 32 comets and 40 asteroids, most with orbits within Earth's. This search resulted in the discovery of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1993 and its impact on the planet Jupiter a year later. Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9 for short with official designation D/1993 F2) is a comet of which 21 fragments fell on the planet Jupiter between 16 and 22 July 1994. Some of those parts had a diameter of 2 kilometers.
I really enjoy your videos, I’ve missed you too. I admit if it isn’t Floor, Nightwish, or Epica I probably don’t see it, but like you, you are a good man, & appreciated by me, & most likely MOST! I love this entire concert, Floor was one happy woman to get back out there this past spring & summer. Pinkpop was Gr8 too, she did both a solo concert, & NW. Have you ever listened to her new singles? I think the album will be out this Spring. I hope she will get through this last bit of her health challenge. What a scare for all of us. Keep rocking!! ❤️🤘💥
Yes, they played with timings and vocal types on this album. Look up what this song is about :) it's pretty cool. Then you will feel this song everytime you look at the moon! You should watch the lyric video for it. You can hear so much more in the mix. Also, Floor sounded not 100%. I wonder if the possible cancer diagnosis was looming while she was performing this concert. Nothing is worse than having a test & waiting to know if you might die.
Welcome back to Nightwish! A challege for Floor to sing, odd phrasing, but she wins it. I think Floor should of backed away from the mic, with the voice over of Johanna (Mrs Holopainen), then come back, but it might affect her concentration. How does music do this to us? Gorgeous, Tuomas adding the emotions.
Excellent choice of song. This Arte Hellfest live version of Shoemaker is a lot improved. Also, How's the Heart? is really interesting in this concert. There has been really no attention to Greatest Show on Earth despite Floor being a burst of energy in it. Enjoyable!
Haha, thanks to those who kick your ass for doing more Nightwish, been waiting for more Nightwish, mate😂😉 I also would like you to react to Procession, Harvest and Tribal (in that order). Procession will make an impact on you, and because of that video, I became a World Land Trust member and so should the rest of you dudes and dudettes! Wished they filmed Troy when he sang there too with Floor. His voice here is beautiful 🥰
Floor Queen Of the Valkyries ❤❤❤
I wondered if they would perform this live because of the ending.
Silly me for doubting Floor could do it live. I’m a big dummy.
ISTR at the launch she did say it might well not be done live.
That weird rhythm is a Shakespearean cadence and refers to the inscript on the capsule of Eugene's ashes which is the spoken part (by Tuomas' wife).
The spoken part is a quote from Romeo and Juliet.

The feeling echo of Mozart's Requiem is just breathtaking. While I still prefer the lyric video, seeing it live has an equally moving feel.
