    When I'm in that area, I worry more about wild hogs than bears... Thanks for the video. I love that stretch of The Withlacoochee River!

      Ditto on the wild hogs, they are fearless and can be very dangerous! I've learned that the bear's tend to keep their distance but I've woken up with hogs on either side of my hammock before. Luckily there was a table near by that I was able to hop up on while they rooted up the area

    Looked like an awesome trip. I love how calm you are around the gators

      It was a great trip, I'll definitely do that one again. With the gators, I learned when I hiked the Florida trail that they are usually pretty skittish. I was definitely on guard when getting close though :)

    Hey Slow, glad you got out in the kayak. Im real interested in the electrolytes. As i may have mentioned im a field biologist at the Grand Canyon in the summer. We rely on electrolytes to survive long hikes we tell the tourists not to do. Ive tried many things and usually end up with salt capsules. Interested in your expertise here.

      Hey SpongeBob! Getting a message from you brought back memories of low tide at Choco and put a smile on my face :)
      To answer your question, my experience as a welder, especially in the summer down here should be pretty significant as we work in thick flame proof clothing dressed like it's -20 degrees outside while in an UN air-conditioning shop all day. We sweat continuously from before sun up until we clock out in the afternoon and I used to experience crippling muscle cramps and spasms. I've tried just about every rehydration mix I could find to include Gatorade, propel, liquid IV, and salt tabs. But my favorite daily mix is a water bottle with LMNT first thing in the morning followed by bottles of water mixed with propel throughout the day. Honestly though, it's all probably no better than salt tabs other than being flavored, but I'm likely to drink more bottles of water with flavor added than not which keeps me more hydrated at the end of the day.
      To make a long story short, salt tabs are great for the money and probably the best in a high heat environment but LMNT is a close second and actually tastes good while keeping the muscles from cramping. I think the key is to 'front load' the water intake, like a full litre first thing in the AM. When I hiked the Florida trail, that was my daily ritual too, a full litre of water (with a propel mix) was in my belly before I ever slung the pack on my back.
      That was long winded, but I hope it helps :)

      @@sailingslowmotion Thanks for the input. Always respect the voice of experience. Your comment about not being able to drink while paddling struck me. I have been using a deck bag for assorted necessary items including water bottles. It worked but not great. This year I installed a water bladder with a water proof fitting coming thru the deck behind me. This worked great. I had 3 L in the bag 2 one L bottles on deck and 2 one L bottles in the cockpit with me. Even paddling 36 hours I didn't get that dehydrated, just exhausted. At the deck I used an electrical water proof fitting for the hose size. I have a disconnect at the bladder.
      Thanks again for your thoughts

    Are you planning on adding a sail like Pacific Action Sail for the Everglades Race?

    • @sailingslowmotion
      @sailingslowmotion  3 місяці тому +2

      Yes, I have one from Sea Eagle that I want to try to rig up. It's designed for my inflatable kayak, but I think it might work. If not then I'll get something else for the down wind runs.
