So much perfection, mastery and humility. Watched at least 100 times and always catch something new. I'll never understand why it had to happen, it rips my heart out. Thanks VBR for bringing all these videos to us.
I've seen a lot of tragedy in my life, and I think the answer that comes to me after everything is accounted for is truly that the only way most people can see what they really had is to lose it. I just wish he could have had a little longer.
Yes he possesses unbelievable skills as composer and pianist. Tragic that in August of 2016 was involved in a traffic accident that has left him with traumatic brain injuries. Is bedridden in a rehabilitation facility, learning basic things again, how to speak, move his limbs and hopefully someday be able to do things for himself. He has made progress from being in a coma for weeks to simple things through his therapy.....Has taken steps with a walker, right hand doesn't move real well yet. We all wish and pray for recovery but brain trauma is complicated.....Thanks for watching and the response..............VBR
verybigrifle Yes; i know these things since ca. 2 or 3 months, and my heart is bleeding because of that, i learned to love Ragtime; to play ragtime only because of Tom.... and Joplin!😅 . Anyway. Its a tragedy.
verybigrifle I was so glad when i found a sheet from tom in the Internet, its "Improvisation on Over the Top"; Arrangement of H. Mezzasalma. Now Im working on this piece. But as he had this horrible accident, this will stay the only piece i can play from him... i guess. And im sad about it!
He sold many of his pieces in folio's. I believe he had 4 of them in print that he sold online and at festivals? Not sure HOW they can be obtained now??.....VBR
verybigrifle Thats the problem, there's no way to obtain them since his accident. Masterpieces of music, many people ask for them. (Although i think, i wouldnt have the skills for these pieces, but i would try it). Now i hope for him, for his family and for the whole Ragtime community, that he recovers on day.... im 16 years old, but in 20 years, thats my dream, i will travel to the USA and maybe.... i see him! And i will buy his compositions, all of them! 😀
Certainly one of my favourites from Tom, this is definitely an amazing piece. As "LudwigVonKoopa64" said it this is "genuine ragtime"!! Thanks Carl for this one.
Some pianist finish their piece with a short (almost brutal) ending whereas some others choose longer endings ... Tom Brier definetly belongs to the 2nd category, his endings kind of last forever, I wonder if this particularity is linked to his personality (actually it could be related to shyness and generosity)
@LudwigVonKoopa64 Tom's music is NOT for the faint of heart!!! Yes he is still evolving......He told me that some of the stuff he is writing to "challenge" himself is so difficult, he has to PRACTICE to play it even...His fertile mind and ideas seem to still be prolific.........Thanks for the comments.....VBR
@sutterchip I believe this to be so!! I remember hearing at the Ragtime Corner, many years ago and Tom played from a piece of binder paper with the Treble melody ONLY, scratched down. It is a much better piece now through Tom's evolving of it.........Thanks Chip for the observation and comment. VBR
@LudwigVonKoopa64 I have the FIRST 3 Folio's he has published and it is NOT among them...I know one of the Folio's published, he asked to submit names of his tunes to include. Look him up on FACEBOOK and contact him and ask WHEN it will be published? He is extremely busy writing and putting all his compositions into NOTATED form, vs handwritten on binder paper. He is a VERY creative artist. He told me he is in NO WAY near finished writing as ideas come all the time. Thanks........VBR
Is there a super simplified beginners arrangement for this song? Like the Entertainer that they have in the back of Alfred's vol #1? I would love to be about to bang out a little wannabe blue lamp shade :)
Tom Brier is brilliant. But rag fans should also try Kristen Mosca... on You Tube and Spotify. She also does her own arrangements and has some very nice work.
Person 1: Should we tell him to be a little quiet? Person 2: But he's got perfect pitch.. If you tell him to stop he'll just whistle the melody in multiple voices! 1: Ah, fine.. But if I see one more original composition I will shoot him for being better than us Tom: *plays razor blades* 1&2: *sighs and gives up* "Let's just enjoy it while we can..."
NO. Last I heard Feb 2021 his family brought him to the family home from 4+ years in re-hab facilities. He only speaks a few words, wheel chair bound, left hand can play some on keyboard but right hand not. Needs care and home is set up for family and caretakers to see he gets that. His severe brain trauma from the accident has left Tom an invalid, as of this date...VBR

I feel the same....

@@nullmeasure6155The universe is random and careless. We just live as best as we can in the time we have.
I love the part that starts at 1:47 so much!
WOW! ! What a piece of music, what a perfection. This person is unbelievable and not from this universe.

As I understand it, this piece is still evolving; this would be the latest revision and sounds terrific; thanks for posting, Carl.
This shoot is my favorite of your videos. The Pineapple Rag play from this day was the first video I saw of Brier!
Este piano tiene un sonido EXCEPCIONAL.
Y EL INTÉRPRETE GENIAL 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
