my lord, a plot twist the sixth sense would be jealous of. always cool to see the ins and outs of demoknight in such detail with your videos because the prevailing narrative around which sword to use has always been "the eyelander is mega busted and nothing holds a candle to it" and that's what i always thought to be true but perhaps i gotta get katana pilled
(also, the in-game demo work/animation has been getting consistently better with each video and all that attention to detail makes the viewing experience 10x better and i hope other people notice it too)
To be honest, it is the best... for hybrid knight.

As a regular in medieval mode I got Katana and Persuader pilled a long time ago, which is ironic because the Zatoichi is weird on that map due to how many demoknights use it (making the 1 v 1 single hit kill interaction more common).
It's something that I think a lot of demoknight players have realized realize or at least have an inkling if at some point the more they play. The eyelander isn't bad per se, but it's better for hybrid knight playstyles.

I love how Solarlight extolling the virtues of the Zatoichi's health on kill is like a dark mirror image of FishStickOnAStick complaining about the Kunai.
a light mirror image
Lowkey it shows a lot of biases in Tf2 players lmao. Demoknight has a bunch of resistances and can reach higher health numbers with the Zatoichi, and it takes way less effort to do than it does to do well with the Kunai, yet Tf2 players only whine about the Kunai.

"The eyelander is genuinely one of TF2's cooler weapons."
*Genuine Eyelander*
I remember the days of terror when Zatoichi still had random crits. A lucky crit to start a fight would let me solo the entire enemy team as the random crits would roll in, one shot people, and top me off on top of that. You felt like a raid boss.
Bruh it was stupid good at that point in time, I always ran it with demoknight and thought everyone was crazy since the eyelander was the most popular sword by far. It just felt good to use and this video perfectly describes why. I didn't like the eyelander because of how horribly passive it would make you versus the zatoichi which rewards you for being aggressive, even before I played Doom Eternal I loved health on kill mechanics in games, now I always run them when I spot them in whatever game I'm playing. Definitly understand why they nerfed it to it's current state. Feels so good to get this affirmation all these years later that I wasn't crazy for using a non meta weapon. Course i'm a contrarian and avoid meta maggots anyway but still.
It also used to heal you to full on kill, no questions asked. At the mere cost of normal melee range.
Oh, and also no slow weapon switching.
Solarlight, I don't know if you will ever see this message. But I started playing TF2 because of you. I'm not that into shooting people. I like knights and armour, yet I found the perfect combination of a FPS and a medieval sim just because of your youtube channel. And TF2 has been my favorite game ever since. Thank you sincerely.
(I played games like overwatch, valorant, ultrakill etc after this message and I also tried scout out for a run. I still like demoknight's gameplay better besides maybe ultrakill. Ultrakill is such a banger.)

why is this in the script
Half-Zatoichi duels have the fabled fighting game RPS:
Rush down - Run into melee range and hit them
Whiff punish - Bait the opponent into swinging and missing and hit them
Keep out - Swing as the opponent is about to enter melee range and hit them
Rush down > Whiff punish > Keep out > Rush down
3D movement and charge mechanic lets you be ambiguous about what option you're using.
Part of the difficulty of applying this in an FPS is identifying the range.
This is why I love hybridknight. With weapon categories in grenade launchers, stickybomb launchers, shields, boots, and melees, and the ability to mix-and-match like a crackhead at buildabear, it makes demoman so flexible and the most versatile class that for some reason no one talks about him in that way.
Not really versatile when he have no ray tracing weapon like a shotgun or pistol, he is all projectile which demoknight is just him being the grenade pill instead, a competent pyro can airblast all he has
Demo has the most polarizing options, but he can't do Literally Everything™ besides healing, unlike Pyro

Yup. The eyelander is a “win more” weapon. It will help you dominate games you were already winning, but it will never help you win a game you were losing.
the bit where you talked about the half-zatoichi and the team having medics that don't know what they're doing reminded me about one time when i was playing hybrid knight and i was burning in front of my medic, and he CONTINUED TO HEAL OUR TEAM'S HEAVY
When you're talking about the impact of the Half-Zatoichi, I think there's another subtle upside that's not really mentioned. Yes you can go for far riskier trades, and sometimes the health results in being able get more kills / escape, but *even if all you do is die, the +100 health is great*. Fundamentally, it translates to time and resources the remaining enemies have to spend in order to deal with you, and that extra second of attention can tip the balance of the larger fight.
(I don't really play much TF2 these days, but I'm always really excited whenever I see a new video from you. You mention at the beginning not being super happy with some of your older frag movies, but I'm honestly just super impressed at the constant improvement in your videos. It's great work, well done!)
I'm surprised there's even contention. After the Half-Zat got ""nerfed"" to only healing half your max HP on a kill instead of a full heal, it was even more rampant at destroying pubs than it already was because of the overheal.
There is a case where using the Zatoichi on Soldier can be useful against a demoknight. If they charge at you, you can predict when they get to you so that your melee registers first. One time on Gold Rush, this demo with the HZ kept rushing me and I countered by simply waiting for him to charge at me.
My Australium Eyelander dictates that there shall be no other sword use due to the lack of drip, even when it is an obviously worse choice for a situation. The Drip shall always conquer the stats.

Even bigger payoff than the bait-and-switch to the Zatoichi was the final reveal of ZAT-oh-EE-chee versus ZA-toy-CHEE, something I had been _screaming at the screen every time it was said for the last 30 minutes_ . Absolutely flawless video Solar, gold fucking star.
Something else I want to note for the folks who might have missed it - this video has one of the best subtitle tracks I've seen in _any_ video, let alone a TF2 video, in years. The attention to detail with the colours and placements, including the cheeky TF2 colour schemes and seamless transitions from background highlighting to transparent is a truly next level process, incredible job.
Another part about the Katana oneshot I like is that winning a duel is almost a guaranteed Banner charge for Solider.
On the other hand that also means caution against banner Soliders (rare as it is to come by that kinda combo) is adviced bcause not only will you die and give him HP if you loose that duel but your team will additionally have to deal with a banner.
because katana deal like a lots of damage on another katana user so it filled any banner on soldier instantly
Every lobby is full of zatoichi demo now. Solar just made casual into medieval mode

There is another rather effective method in dueling, or any fight in general, that I never see anyone use. Just crouch randomly in the fight or when you think they might attack. I learned demoknight playing vs saxton hale, so trying to NOT get hit was quite important. It's such a useful thing I have to wonder why I have never fought someone else who does it. Smaller hitbox = good
The professional Demopan casually running into 3 sentries, killing them all before obliterating the rest of my team:
The eyelander is reference to the 1980's movie Highlander, which I haven't seen but I'm pretty sure there's kilts etc so there's Scottish ties. The main point of the movie is to cut off other highlanders' heads which I'm pretty sure they do with swords and gain their power (called the quickening). That's as much as a summary as I can give after skimming the first page of the wiki page (also the quote "there can only be one aye" is a reference to this film). Can't say more than that as I do want to watch it one day and I'm trying not to spoil it.
Thank you! You are the only one who've I seen say this. Highlander is one of my favorite movies and I think it's so cool that tf2 has a sword that's abilities mimic the powers of the immortals in the movie. Please watch Highlander, it's so good! But just a warning; it has terrible sequels that people consider noncannon. Wouldn't recommend watching those.
Even better, there is a competitive game mode named after the movie
Bruh. U can't reference Highlander without having watched Highlander. That's the first rule of Highlander
I think this reference is very obvious for anyone born before 2000
@@ZeChADPK my boi in the video was either very sarcastic or he doesn't know.
The best Eyelander strategy is to collect 4 heads, then switch boots and shield to explosives at spawn. You get Demoman with 210 hp and 125% movement speed.
It's funny because not even half way into the video, he says exactly this...
I was at the exact part where he mentions this when I saw your comment
Amazing. It's almost as if he talks about that in the video or something. 😮

Do you read comments before commenting?
The problem with the eyelander is that it is „lame“. It doesn’t encourage crazy trimps or clever ambushes line other swords. For the one dying to it, it’s feels unfair how quickly demo can close the distance. And for the user, every single engagement is a commitment that could cost you yours heads.
Nobody wins from this (except pubstompers).
As someone who has been exclusively using the half-zatoichi for the past month to get better at demoknight, the 2nd half of this video was very nice :)

That medic that ubered you during the "long mystery section" was such a chad. Perhaps I should start shouting words of encouragement into the mic when playing as medic.
I got my Australium Eyelander on my 5th tour. I named it The Butter Knife and have slain several snipers who didn’t know Demoman can fly.
One thing that differentiates the Eyelander and Uber is that you can (albeit slowly) fill up uber in spawn. The glowing eye sword forces you to kill for it to be valuable which can be problematic if leaving spawn is a problem.
Plus medic’s role is to stay alive as long as he can and heal people. He isn’t a combat class
Demo-knight on the other hand is meant to be fighting and taking risks. To mitigate risk and protect your heads, you have to actively be playing a less aggressive version of a class defined by killing things dead. Staying back and waiting for a chance to get as many kills as you can just makes you a worse version of the spy

I once was defending a payload as full demoknight with a half zatoichi and survived for about 10 seconds while glued to the payload since i kept replenishing my health with all the enemies coming at it. In response to the early point specifically. I think people say that the booties "cancel out" the penalty because they're looking at these items in isolation, rather than explicitly compared to other swords.
The main point missing is the fact that yes, you can in fact cancel it out with the booties, but you can also just use other swords and both 'counteract' the drawback AND get more overall hp.

funny thing about having 4 heads on the eyelander, you can walk through a pyros airblast sometimes and be able to hit them before they can do another one
yeah that was what i was thinking. the eyelander is the most consistent and dangerous except if you cant get to 4 heads. or would take too much time todo so. it gives you health and speed what allows you todo way more and not be predicted too but well if you cant upkeep 4 heads might as well equip something else
