This shows how to load and unload a Mossberg 500 or 590 shotgun. Please follow all safety rules and read the manual to your firearm prior to attempting this.
Hey everyone! Thanks for all your questions and feedback on this video. I'm pleased for who well it was received, especially for how quickly I threw it together. Bit of an update: If you want a video from another channel with far more experience than me, please check out this video from another channel ua-cam.com/video/fDnyRXF_0Ck/v-deo.html That said, I'll be doing a video on the Remington 870 at some point in the future. I hope to do more videos when life allows. Stay tuned.
It might not have been available when you posted this video but if you remove the pic-rail and the red dot riser you can really lower the optic. I have this on mine and it runs 40-50 bucks depending on where you buy it. www.kearms.com/ke-arms-mount-for-RMR/mossberg-590.aspx
@@danielandrews7028 not too long after i made that video I switched to a Trs-25 on there specifically because of the optic height. You're right, the lower mounts weren't available back when i made the video. The RMR ended up on another gun. Once I get my hands on another rmr or 507, I'll get one of those low mounts like you mentioned, I think it's a much better option than what I have now or the stock bead.
@@rjg02005 when you get another optic take a look at the holosun 507c. It has that big circle around the dot. It pretty much mimics the shot pattern. It’s awesome! Trs-25 is a solid red dot as I have a few. Stock those 2032’s deep lol
@@danielandrews7028 I ended up going the route of removing the pic rail and using an rmr riser. I ended up swapping the RMR with a 507C, the holosun is now on the Shockwave and my RMR is on a handgun. Thanks for the suggestion, I like this better than the pic rail option.
So I watched this again and what I think you did so well in this video is you first described how something worked and then followed it with “and this is how it looks”. Good instructional technique for us rookies.
Thank you very much for teaching me how to load my shotgun. I'm actually a first-time owner of a shotgun. Exactly I bought a Mossberg Shockwave little bit pricey but it's worth it but I definitely love handguns the shotguns for self-defense home defense yep I kind of live in a rough neighborhood
Robert Tena The shockwave is a handful, but I love mine. There's lots of good instructors out there too, if you have the opportunity, get with a pro for a class. Stay safe.

Thanks for that demo on loading/unloading options to a Mossberg shotgun. I have a Shockwave 590 12gauge. This is good elementary information and demonstration. You done good!!
Thanks for making this video. Whenever I’m holding the shockwave , I feel like Arnold in T2 lol. Can’t help it. She’s a little beast! I love that it holds 6 rounds in such a small package.
Thanks for the great video and especially for keeping everything in view. I’ve seen too many videos where the people may as well not even have the gun on camera since they’re barely showing what they’re doing.
This video is responsible for saving a lot of new Shotgun Owners behinds ! Let's face it most men don't read the manuals before wanting to Operate it !!! Thanks So Much for making me Safer !!!
Great video. ...except: Never play with a completely loaded gun (ammo in, on, or near the gun). Better to load the side saddle with blanks instead of live rounds when practicing or demonistrating the technique. Other than that, Awesome job! I learned a lot. Thanks.
Bless to u and the Gun Fam......You Gun Wisdom Just save my as just now....The part about load and unloading....I thought my gun jam but your wisdom help unload that same Shot Gun 590 Thank u
I'm glad it helped. The mossberg will last a lifetime, but if it's been sitting for that long, if you haven't done so already, make sure it's cleaned, freshly oiled, and maybe swap out the mag tube spring just for good measure. One of my other guns has been sitting for about 5 years and the oil has started getting tacky.
Have been looking for a video that explains this process. You did a great job on doing it. My first Mossberg is in and look forward to using it as much as I can! Thanks, again. Subscribed, too.
His clearing of the live round in the chamber was incorrect. Place the shotgun on safe. Unload the magazine tube from the bottom as he demonstrated, then cycle the action to clear the gun only after the mag tube is unloaded. If you do what he shows as the first step of clearing the chambered round, when you close the action, you've just loaded a live round into the chamber. Always, clear the magazine or magazine tube first, then clear the chamber making sure the gun ids on safe.
Thank you very much for the video. This is beyond helpful! I will be buying my first shotgun and it's going to be a mossberg! I appreciate this greatly 👌
Congrats! As soon as you're able, I highly recommend patterning it with the load you choose to use and, when possible, get professional training. There's some good resources on UA-cam as well. If it's new, it might feel a bit rough, that's normal. Mossbergs will eventually break in though.
Thank you, this is the best video I’ve found for this. I’ve had a mossbirg 500 with 5 shells, keeping one out of the chamber and just keep it loaded for years and never had the use it, some psycho , despite there was a sign that said I am loaded please be careful. Saw it behind the door, moved a table and before I knew it he was pumping it and excitedly unloading it. I didn’t know if he took any or led any in and I couldn’t remember how to be the all out to be sure I was empty. ( were in a red neck area and all keep loaded weapons around behind doors and such but I’m not a gun person , just want it there if I needed I but totally forgot how to be sure I was unloaded sonThank You!
One method for storing it I don't think he spoke about was this: Start with what you think is an empty gun...look in the action make sure there's no round in the barrel, make sure you can see the follower so there's no round in the shell tube, and THEN rack it a few times empty to make sure there's nothing in the gun, then 1)pull the trigger. 2)put the safety on...THEN, not touching the pump action again, load the shells into the magazine tube and then leave it. Lock it up for when you need it. THIS way you have a loaded SAFE shotgun. It's on safe, nothing in the chamber, trigger spring isn't getting weakened, and you're still good to go if something goes bump in the night. Pull it off your wall mounted lock and rack it and safety off! Not the only way, but the way I like to store it.
@@dgunearthed7859 This is generally called "Cruiser Safe". The only point I'm nervous about in your comment above was the "...rack it and safety off" part. It's your choice, but both the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 are single action firearms. The safety is there for a reason, just like in an AR or 1911. If you can do so, it's good practice to keep the safety on until you bring the gun up on target. It really doesn't take any longer with a bit of practice.
@@rjg02005 I get the misunderstanding. By something went "bump in the night" I'm basically talking about there is DEFINITELY a threat and it needs to be neutralized so at that point my safety is coming off but fingers off the trigger but ready to go into action...again to each their own. 😉
Thank you man, I just inherited one of these from my Father who passed and I thought it was a spiffy looking gun. I'm a big fan of 20ga. I like my shockwave in 12 for max versatility but can see how many would fair better with a 20. Big plus for the latter is that I'm pretty sure it's lighter weight.
Nicely done! Only thing I would have mentioned at the start is that the mag will only hold 5 rounds if they are 2 3/4-in. Otherwise, it's 4 rounds with 3 inch shells. Thanks man! This helped me.
Good point. I used to have 3" shells around, but now I'm exclusively 2 3/4. Didn't even think to remember that. If you can handle 3" magnums out of this boomstick, you're certainly not recoil sensitive.
Thank you! I've always owned and shot handguns and rifles and know little to nothing about shotguns. But wanted to get something extra for my home protection that would have that lovely shotgun sound. 😊 However, just because ya buy one doesn't mean ya walk away knowing even how to load it. So thank you for the lesson. Now time to get familiar with shooting and cleaning it so it will be as familiar as the rest.
Sorry to have to point this out but if you clear the chamber first, when you cycle the action by closing the forearm/action you are in fact loading a new round into the action from the magazine tube. How does that sight work on that shockwave? I mean, do you actually pull the gun up to effectively use it? Good loading video.
I do hold it up and look thru the sight. There's a video on my channel called "Mossberg Shockwave 12ga update - 1 year later" ua-cam.com/video/JENW8Qu1Loo/v-deo.html where I explain why I use a red dot on the gun in a little more detail. As far as effectiveness, I have shot clays with that setup a few times: ua-cam.com/video/3Zq7LgKA-Jk/v-deo.html Definitely not the best choice, but it's totally possible to shoot the gun aimed as opposed to hip-fire only.

Is that rear sight helpful?
and where did you get it?
Andrew Witke sight is a Trijicon RMR RM-02. Works great, but I've since taken it off to put on a pistol. Very good sight, but it's more expensive than the firearm it's mounted on.
Thanks. Just got mine. Should there be some looseness on the pump grip when in the load position? My hand can can move the pump, side to side, about 1/4”.
This is totally normal for Mossbergs and Remingtons. Have fun and be safe! Which model did you pick up?
I'm not well versed in guns so just a question do you have to keep pushing the action release every pump to cycle every shells?
Nope. A pull of the trigger releases the action as well. Once the bolt locks forward, you have to either use the action release or the trigger; but only ever use the trigger if you want it to go bang.
