I have lived near Mt. Baldy since 1962. I have skied it in the Winter and hiked it in the Summer. Once, while skiing, I fell on my back and slid down on a sheet of ice on a very steep slope. While sliding down I prayed quickly and intensely. I missed a tree and a very large boulder, before miraculously stopping. Then, during the Summer, I was hiking across a slope on crumbled pieces of shale-like rocks. Suddenly, I was trapped in a small, but very scary rock slide. Once again, I prayed very quickly and intensely. And again, the problem abated. Fortunately, prayer worked for me. My. Baldy is very treacherous.
she couldn't have been that experienced, if she was hiking in snow field with no way to self-arrest and no anchor partner. Walking a trail many times and being an experienced mountaineer are two VERY different things, some people learn that the hard way.
Yup. Running/biking/hiking trails become different animals with snow and rain. Never underestimate the risk or you find yourself between swept away in a flash flood and tumbling down a hill during a landslide.

I remember back in the '80s as a Boy Scout in the L.A. area being told of the ice chutes on Mt. Baldy. Our troop never hiked that far inland as we mostly hiked the Angeles Nat'l Forest trails closer to the San Fernando Valley, but I recall being made aware of them when we were preparing to go on our annual snow hike one year.

Taking a selfie has killed so many hikers. She was more focused on social media than her footing. Hiking is dangerous enough. Seems harsh but this gets a darwin award.
Mt Baldy has quite a tally. I feel sorry for the search and rescue volunteer, a teacher you who lost his life 3 years ago trying to find a missing hiker. The hiker was later found deceased.
When I was 20, I was out hiking and slid down a slippery hill in Big Sur. I was aiming right towards a big fallen tree. Somehow, I was able to get my legs in front of me and lesson the impact. My face hit the tree, I got pretty banged up. I don’t remember anything after that for hours. Years later, I found out I had cracked 2 vertebrae in my neck and have had life long neck problems. I’ve been a hiker all my life, but I am very, very careful and don’t do anything risky or questionable. I was very fortunate that day. My condolences to this mom and her children.
Baldy is steep and icy. If you slip and fall you aren’t going to stop till you get to the bottom of the Mountain. Many have died there. This is a very sad story but she should have had an ice pick in her hand rather than her cell phone
I remember a couple of years ago. I was hiking Mt Baldy on a bright sunny day but very windy too. I was in my full hiking gear but I decided to head back because I knew all it takes is just one slip. On the way back down, I was warning all the hikers going up. I told them it’s just way too windy and I decided to turn back. Be very careful if you wannt push through.
I’m guessing she fell on the section just before the final upward climb to the summit where the trail is basically a narrow line cut along a steep slope. In the summertime, the traction is firm enough to be very safe for a hiker, but all bets are off when the rain/snow hits that portion…a hiker is basically trying to go horizontal on a slippery playground slide at that point.
As Scoutmaster we always discuss as leaders & as Scouts the dangers of any hikes we plan. Hiking is fun, so sorry to hear the loss of Crystal Paula Gonzalez, accidents can happen to anyone no matter how experienced or prepared you are since conditions are never the same. That footage of snow/ice stream going down the mountain was the type of condition that made her turn around.
Pppl don't realize that much of the San Gabriel/San Bernardino mountains are wilderness areas, and very difficult terrain. Over the years, lots of ppl have been killed, injured, or stranded and gotten lost. It is always heartbreaking for a family to lose such a vibrant person. She was a heckuvan outdoors person. Sadly, as many here have noted, she was very interested in the camera, being filmed shortly before the fall (as noted in the news) and all painted up with makeup, jewelry and fashion. WE've seen stories about people losing their life for the camera many times. Sad. All for the attention.

This whole narrative is wrong. She was an experienced TRAIL HIKER, not an experienced MOUNTAINEER, which is a completely different ballgame. An experienced mountaineer would not have done something so reckless without the proper equipment in that dangerous steep and snowy alpine environment.
When you do dangerous and unnecessary adventures, you're not only putting your life in danger but also the rescue workers!! Selfish and narcissistic main character syndrome.

More like frustrated that they had to go out rescuing another instagram housewife and take their equipment into that mess
I'm a volunteer first-responder you get numb to it I've been doing it for 15 years seeing dead bodies is like looking at a piece of chicken for me..

Taking a selfie has killed so many hikers. She was more focused on social media than her footing. Hiking is dangerous enough. Seems harsh but this gets a darwin award.
Regardless of how good you really are, you should know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away!
And know when to run..
gotta get tht selfie ig
Is this another possible "selfie death"? Social media will be the end of some of us...
Mt Baldy has quite a tally. I feel sorry for the search and rescue volunteer, a teacher you who lost his life 3 years ago trying to find a missing hiker. The hiker was later found deceased.
May she Rest In Peace. My prayers are with her children and loved ones.
That is so sad. I wish people would heed mother nature. No matter how experienced, we are no match for her. RIP.
Please God Protect her children 🙏
Taking selfies while you cross the devil's backbone is not recommended
She was climbing baldy bowl.
How sad. She seemed so passionate and bubbly. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. 🙏❤️🙏
What a beautiful smile. A mother of four. So tragic. May she RIP
I fell a few hundred feet off a mountain once, the people I was with thought I died, God kept me here for some reason
Yea sure bro. Sit down.
Good observation

Wow deepest condolences
Most people wouldn't think los Angeles has mountains they are big and steep may she be blesses on her journey home
I fell off a 80ft cliff and landed in a pond of water I survived and no broken bones i am so careful when hiking … Awhh man sorry for this loss
Wow I would have been shook 😮 that sounds so scary
As Scoutmaster we always discuss as leaders & as Scouts the dangers of any hikes we plan. Hiking is fun, so sorry to hear the loss of Crystal Paula Gonzalez, accidents can happen to anyone no matter how experienced or prepared you are since conditions are never the same. That footage of snow/ice stream going down the mountain was the type of condition that made her turn around.
She didn't hurt around. She should have turned around. Better yet she should have never attempted that climb.
People insist on doing such dangerous things. Her love for her family should have been more important than going hiking.
Pppl don't realize that much of the San Gabriel/San Bernardino mountains are wilderness areas, and very difficult terrain. Over the years, lots of ppl have been killed, injured, or stranded and gotten lost. I use to work as a journalist in San Bernardino, and every year we had to report stories about the dangers of SoCal mountains...
All due respects, wait a few weeks when the weather settles and trail conditions improve.
Go time I don’t think so ! I hate this crazy hikes in this terrible weather, don’t thinking that never will happen to them ! My mother always told me don’t go on this crazy Adventure
I will die one day but not on hiking!
So sorry to those children who lost their mom 💗
Wishing her a speedy recovery..
Uuuhh... Zombie... lol.
She died.
No matter how much exprience one has, Mother Nature will always have more. Senseless deaths are hard considering they didn't have to happen. RIP.
That's so tragic and worse she was experienced and decided to turn back yet fell down must of been really scary but what was even scarier was never being able to see her kid and all kinds of things running through her head while falling towards the tree ,mother nature is too much for us to handle
OMG, I love her spirit. My condolences.
She died doing what she loved? That needs to stop. I love playing guitar but it would suck to die playing it.
My deepest felted 💔for all her children ❤❤❤❤& Family; yet I still feel that once you’re a Mom, you have to forgo any dangerous anything that could result in the death of a Mom❤Loosing my Mom is still a tragedy that hurts every day 💔
Omg..... my condolences to her family
I'm so sorry for the families loss so tragic
That’s so sad 😢my condolences 💐 to her family. She died doing what she loved. 🥾⛰️🚵♀️🚞🚵♀️🗻

My condolences and prayers with her family I am so heart broken
So sorry for your families loss. 🙏🏻💜
Bless her. People should not over document these hikes. One still photo is enough. So sorry to hear of this.
She did it for the gram.Tryna get better pics!!.. that what I was told from an family friend..
That social media hella of an DRUG!!
She was more worried about her make up than her skills.

This whole narrative is wrong. She was an experienced TRAIL HIKER, not an experienced MOUNTAINEER, which is a completely different ballgame. An experienced mountaineer would not have done something so reckless without the proper equipment in that dangerous steep and snowy alpine environment.
Im so sorry 😔 what a terrible loss of a beautiful soul.
When you do dangerous and unnecessary adventures, you're not only putting your life in danger but also the rescue workers!! Selfish and narcissistic main character syndrome.
This is why I have my ass in my basement drinking the good stuff while I watch the great old American television with my pizza.

My heart goes out to the family and friends she leaves behind. That is a good reason to stay away from some dangerous hobbies. Not worth taking the risk of injury and death.
Couldn’t tell if she was going hiking or going to a photo shoot……Hair done, makeup done, lipstick, wardrobe.
Putting on for social media basically
So sorry for her and her friends and family.
So beautiful. She died doing what she loved. Prayers for her family 🙏🏽♥️
She was so happy poor woman
Yeah I’m sure her 4-now motherless-kids would agree. 🤘
Tell her husband and kids that! Lady is the poster child for stupidity. She was a selfish women.

@@katjay3125 I hear you. How can anyone know what a woman really looks like under all that make up? A lot of models are not considered attractive when the makeup is removed.
Tragic accident but...... If you wear lipstick while hiking, you are only a self-professed experienced hiker and actually a total novice and should not even be anywhere near Mt. Baldy. She was probably wearing high heels also.
She played trap music when hiking and had the phone on most the time Clout chaser
She could've had a term life insurance for ~$20-$40 a month. Looks like she decided to spend that and then some on hair, nails, and clothes shopping. Now her family has to hustle donations for her funeral? GTFOH
So sad, she seemed to be a very good person. RIP and condolences to family and friends.

I love and hike Mt. Baldy, but not when it snows. So much can go so wrong, even for the experienced that it's best to avoid. A former coworker found out the hard way after I warned him to avoid it during the winter months. Fortunately, he made it back home that day. Tragic for this lady that didn't. RIP
Sending condolences to the family and friends. So sad.
Mt Whitney is not the highest mountain in the US. It’s the tallest in the contiguous US, but Denali (in Alaska) is taller.
