The locking mechanism is to make sure that the room stays cold. If it’s not engaged then the temp won’t be where it needs to be and that can lead to issues. Now why the latch was engaged while she was in there is a whole other thing because we have a room like this if someone is in it we don’t completely seal the door or we make sure someone knows we’re in there.

@@midori4713 Most home freezers aren’t walk-in freezers and they don’t go down to -10.
Ultimately my guess is that it’s because of the value of everything in the freezer. The freezers we have easily have probably a half million worth of enzymes. If you lose power or if it’s not completely sealed the loss is devastating if temperatures rise too much for too long. This happened when I was in college and it was crippling. I imagine food is somewhat similar.
In contrast, a home freezer failing isn’t as economically devastating. And the rules around what can and can’t be eaten if it happens are not as strict (like I’m not terribly concerned about refreezing my peas but Walmart probably wouldn’t be allowed to sell them).

Industrial freezers act like a faraday cage. I worked at Taco Bell in high school and got locked in our freezer for about 10 minutes at the end of the night. Luckily our GM had a rule that you could not open or close alone. Always two people. You could slip and fall, cut yourself, have a robbery, or get locked in the freezer among many other possible dangers. And they had a crew out first thing the next morning to fix the freezer door. But back then a single family owned almost all of the stores in the area and they cared about quality, came to the store often announced or not, took complaints from customers and staff and cared about our behavior while on the clock seriously. It’s a different world now.

Sad to hear about that @ Jill Louise and that you suffered that type of harassment which is completely intolerable behavior of any employee to do that to another employee that type of intolerable behavior is actually criminal and those employees are now a liability to the company by holding an employee hostage in a freezer it could be considered as unlawful kidnapping . That type of behavior is intolerable and an actual firable offense as well as a criminal as it's actually creating a toxic work environment to unlawfully confine and detain someone and hold them against their will in a freezer to cause emotional , psychological and physical distress etc . I hope you filed a police report and contacted HR about the incident because that is abuse and harassment which caused emotional distress and which intent to cause harm to an employee they intentionally violated your rights by doing so to display an act/ tactics to intimidate you and cause fear , confusion , panic and intentional distress what you described is violence in the workplace which is actually if you look in your employee handbook. I'm sure you will find the clause in which any acts of violence , intimidation , agression on an employee of the company is a firable offense as well as criminal and for HR to be properly notified of such offenses or grievances and to have law enforcement contacted in case of such offenses against an employee to properly be investigated upon. If I were you I would also contact a lawyer that could handle this as you seem like you have a clear cut case here . I'm sorry that happened to you at work for I believe there are zero tolerance policies put in place for exactly what you experienced for that reason why zero tolerance policies exist to protect innocent employees from hostile bad hires that are liabilities to companies and fellow associates. Nothing is worse than a bad hire and unfortunately in your case those employees were bad hires causing much harm to the employees and furthermore the company causing mayhem .

My recommendation for employees having to work in a walk-in freezer is to be proactive. If you work in that kind of environment you should learn what safety mechanisms are in place as well as how to disable the freezer, even if you have to damage it. Condolences. I am NOT a therapist nor pretend to fully grasp the pain of others but for what it's worth on your NATURAL, very-human curse of thinking about painful things -- while trying to sleep, middle of day or whenever -- I learned/was taught/advised of one technique that may help. BTW I have PLENTY of similar scenes that haunted me from personal loss to way, way too much as a critical-care EMT. The worst was pediatric oncology.
Dwelling on the WHYs or brutal details of anything is natural but useless. I say "trying to reconcile the irreconcilable is impossible for us mortal humans and trying to do so will only drive you mad." Ironically even the MIRACLES can do this ... "WHY this kid and not THIS one?" There is no measure of deserving anything. The more you think, the more it gets worse. So what can you do?
Again this is just ONE hack word on a small fraction of that of which you deal. 1. You WILL think of those things. Duh. 2. That's the reality now but you still have control. When I'm focused on such thoughts, I was taught to say STOP. Imagine a giant blanket wrapping it all up and then move that burden to the side. It's a discreet object. It's not going away, it WILL be part of your thoughts (DUH) but y'know? GD, sleep is the key now so time to move that to the side for an almost scheduled tackle of it when you're stronger and more awake. Just the act of trying it tends to distract and deflate the grip. You aren't denying anything, you're not somehow disrespecting it, you're just putting it in its place for the right time to deal with. Was also taught to imagine talking to the Lost while putting ALL the emotion aside as if talking to them about a daily problem. What would they say? Your mother would, of course, understand but encourage you not to let it destroy you. Accept that power. "Sorry, bad thoughts. I've got you scheduled for tomorrow afternoon so wait your turn. Meantime, VAMOOSE! Again, for what it's worth. Peace.

@@jamesblack4411 that's corporate culture to a T, they don't want to waste a penny, they are all underpaid, and the person that CAN do something, DOES NOT. They are all corporate brained. They were probably thinking about how they would fire her for not showing up, longer than they thought about coming to unlock the store and open the location as the Manager since the shift leader didn't show up. But they aren't gonna go open up not their store, they are gonna drive around picking their ass doing as little as possible bc "they've earned it." Corporate culture to a T.

30 years ago I had a high school friend who work for an electric company in West Texas. He had been complaining about the bucket truck not working properly multiple times. One day he goes up in that bucket truck in the Hydraulics fail and drop him 40 feet to his death. He'd been married for two years and had a one-year-old baby. Rest in peace, his name was Darren Sloan.

If you are ever trapped inside of a walk in freezer, look for the evaporator unit, which is usually near the ceiling. Break that thing with anything available to you. Once it's broken, the cold air will stop blowing.

There are wires sticking out of the evap unit yank those wires evap breaks down and the freezer is no longer functional unfortunately that won't help you, it would take 6+ hours for the freezer temps to rise due to all the pre-frozen foods around you you'll still die, freezers are designed and insulated in such a way to keep the temps below freezing even if the freezer is turned off for short amount of time, the only way I see her getting out of this one is if she gets out ,the freezers front door does not have a dead bolt lock, the locking mechanism is held by a small 4 screw type hinge, kick the living crap out of the front door, the locking mechanism hinge will bend and break easily, she was 60+ yrs old lady she was unable to kick that door with such a force. RIP. New freezer doors are designed in such a way that the door cannot be locked from outside.
