The song was written about the Bicentennial (1976) and it reflects on the role "America" played in world events and the downfall (at that time) of the country due to Viet Nam, Watergate, gas shortages, inflation etc. and that our best may be behind us. Much like it is today, unfortunately.

STYX is a trippy band. Every member super talented. With 3 primary songwriters that supported each other’s ideas which to a band that just sounds like STYX. The brothers holding down the beat and drive also had some writers credits sprinkled throughout the catalog. 3 distinct types of songs plus any combo of collabs. All had huge hits as writers and lead vocals.

Great song by this band. I prefer the studio version even though they are good live. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Mr. Roboto" (yes I like that one too) etc.

Great reaction! This was from the Return to Paradise tour. I saw them twice on this tour and can honestly say (for a Styx fan) this was one of the best concerts I ever attended (and I have seen quite a few of the greats in concert). There was just so much pent-up demand for Styx to reunite at this time. The energy was on another level.

Styx is still on the road (a Vegas residency soon) and still sound and play wonderfully. This is the original lineup. Laurence Gowen has been the lead singer for years and is a great front man. Sadly the original drummer has passed away but Todd Sucherman has been the drummer for many years and is considered one of the best drummers in the world. If you find Styx playing near you....RUN....you won't be disappointed !

Also, Dennis performs, though he has scaled back. I saw Dennis in 2014, and he sounded great. His band was great. My favorite moment was when he asked the lady singing backup to come down in front ... it was his wife of 40 some years. Dennis sang Babe to her, and they danced through a section. Like someone else mentioned, Styx members sang positive songs for the most part. I read that Tommy has been married 30 some years. Anyhow, despite the issues that ensued with the band, it's worth seeing Dennis provided he still performs.

Okay just for clarification, Styx has many singers, the main singers are of course Dennis DeYoung but Tommy Shaw playing the double neck guitar is equally recognized as a lead singer. James Young has some songs (Miss America) he's lead on as well. I went to see Styx many times in the early days before the breakup and also saw this reunion tour. They are one of the few bands that can replicate almost exactly a song in concert and almost indistinguishable from the studio version. You have to be there to understand how those synths rumble the ground and your whole body.

Styx had 3 lead singers/songwriters resulting in a variety of songs and styles. Since you've done two Dennis DeYoung songs, you should do a Tommy Shaw one next. Styx were big in the 70's and 80's. Thought you'd like this one. Dennis DeYoung wrote this in 1975 as America was gearing up for its bicentennial celebration in 1976. The song is not a celebration of the event, but a look at how it was being exploited. He explained in Classic Rock Revisited: "The 200th anniversary of America was being totally taken over by commercialization in a rather unceremonious fashion. I had a moment of reflection. I had grown up in the so-called glory days of the United States of America, which was post World War II until 1970. To live in this country at that time was really the golden age. The fallibility of the United States was something that struck me and that set the tone for 'Suite Madam Blue.' Maybe I was fearful of being literal - I think I probably was." The number of great songs by Styx is long.
More songs I'd recommend - Renegade, Babe, The Best of Times, Lady, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Miss America, Queen of Spades, Castle Walls, Fooling Yourself

Hello 🤗👋. This is more of why I tolerated STYX. This song is one of their few that really highlights the diversity of the band. My favorites by this group will always be Too Much Time On My Hands and Renegade - both written and sung by Tommy. I'm a drummer by trade. I'm not a songwriter. Neither are most drummers. It's definitely difficult to sing and drum at the same time. I don't know how guitar players do it. More power to 'em

Enjoyed your reaction. I was a big fan of Styx in high school and this was one of my favorites. Loved Dennis's work but also loved the songs that Tommy Shaw penned and sang. As time went on there was growing tension between Dennis and the band. Dennis is a big fan of Broadway musicals and his voice is so perfect for that genre (as shown by his musical theater work later in his career). You can see more of that theatrical style creeping into their music, especially their latter albums Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here. Eventually they permanently split and after a lawsuit, the other band members go the rights to the name Styx and Dennis could use it as a descriptive term in any of his solo endeavors (like Dennis DeYoung and the music of Styx).

Dennis and the band wrote this song in ‘73 when America was at the end of the Vietnam War, which has been shown as a dark passage in the lifetime of America. They spoke of the time when “a word from your lips and the World turned around”, I viewed as when America, and Allies, fought and won two World Wars. After the Second World War, America helped rebuild Japan and much of Europe so we were looked upon with great virtue until our time in the Vietnam War. The band wanted America to get past this dark time and lead us back to those better times…

Yes, Styx is great live, and I'll be again in Vegas for their number of concerts late Jan. early Feb.
A few corrections and history: Dennis had some health problems, and the band decided to go on tour without him including the shows I saw at StyxJam '99 in Vegas. Legal crap ensued and since then Dennis was out. He's done some solo stuff since.
After 1996's "Return To Paradise" reunion tour, Styx toured in 1997's "40th Anniversary of The Grand Illusion". In 1998 Dennis did his play "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and members of Styx attended the same performance that I did. Tommy Shaw also released his "7 Deadly Zens" solo album in 1998 along with a few performances to support it (sing-alongs at Borders and opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd). There was a brief period in 1980 where Dennis was out of the band(no albums or tours), and then back in before their "Paradise Theater" album. Tommy Shaw left the band after 1983's "Kilroy Was Here" tour. After solo stuff by each, Dennis reformed Styx for 1991's "Edge Of The Century" album and tour without Tommy who was then in Damn Yankees. In 1995, they got together to re-record "Lady" for release on an A&M greatest hits album at Dennis' home studio, and that led to the 1996 reunion.
BTW, check out Damn Yankees song "Come Again". Damn Yankees were Tommy Shaw(Styx), Jack Blades(Night Ranger), Ted Nugent, and Michael Cartellone(now of Lynyrd Skynyrd); and released 2 albums in the early 90's.

This might be Styx at their best. Thoughtful lyrics, great musicianship, and top tier vocals. I have always loved this song. And It is about the United States. It was written in the mid 70s... leading out of the debacle in Vietnam and the wavering confidence in the leadership role that the United States played in the world post WW II had played. The political unrest, the scandals, the struggling economy... I know because I grew up in that era. This was Deyoung's call to right the ship and lead us away from that period. I used to be able to cover this song. Once upon a time...

Return to Paradise tour was a polished presentation of what I remembered as a teen seeing the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight tours, different times, but oh so good! 💖
3 leads, although JY was lesser, Tommy put out some bangers, too.
It's crazy to have fangirled over this group only to have them show up in your small hometown!! 🤭😯😂

Styx had three lead singers…Dennis DeYoung, James Young, and Tommy Shaw. 😊

I LOVE JY's guitar playing, but I'd HARDLY call him a lead singer. He sang maybe 2-3 songs. Tommy and Dennis were clearly the 2 lead singers (nothing against JY)

I saw them early in the bands existence at ECC- Elgin Community College which is outside of Chicago. I believe it was 1973 or 74 and they were on a small stage with audience standing or sitting on the tile floor. It was like the commons area or something not an auditorium. Another local band named Heartsfiled also played that night.

I've seen Heartsfield many times live in small clubs over the years. Great country rock band. They never hit it real big, but their first 3-4 albums are gems.

I love your reactions, just subscribed. Styx was a great band for sure! And that was one of their many great songs. I have a suggestion for you from another band that I'm certain you'll love. The Band is Toto. The song is Africa. The video with 53M views posted by Gunter Bauer Spielbach. This is a live performance done decades after their original was released. It's absolutely amazing! I think you will love it!

FYI Styx is still touring constantly. Dennis DeYoung was replaced by Lawrence Gowan (never looked back) and still has Tommy Shaw and James JY Young. They totally kick ass!

It is, and has been commonly called Styx"s Stairway To Heaven. You nailed that analogy. Styx also didn't rip off Stairway because it was written prior to Stairway To Heaven. It was on the Equinox album. Dennis wrote it for the Bicentennial. The song basically is about after 200 years our country has completely lost its innocence. Great song and great commentary. You both were all over this. Thank you

Dude, Stairway was written in 1971. Stairway was out a few years before Equinox. Styx did not "rip off" Stairway, but (like almost everyone else) they WERE influenced by the Led Zep stuff.
