Dio is and always will be my favorite vocalist / song writer. His music got me through some very rough times in my life. I saw him several times in concert and you are right, he is spot on with his vocals every time. One time I saw him he was very sick, but he still came out and did the same awesome performance as always. He was an amazing talent, gone all too soon.

@sha broussard That is actually incorrect. I’ve known the man all my adult life. He liked to work with great guitarists. They would come up with a riff and he wrote the chords, the melody and the lyrics. Then they would put the song together. Basically a collaboration. That’s how he always worked. He didn’t like to play other people’s songs with few exceptions. One of them is mistreated written by deep purple. He did one song written by Jeff Pilson. That’s it, unless you count some tribute songs where he was asked to sing. Dream on and welcome to my nightmare were tributes. Of course the band did their part. He was a perfectionist and able to bring out the best in people.
Who do you think wrote the music and lyrics? Seriously curious.

Ronnie should have been a household name Like Metallica or the Beatles. Yes, he was that good. I kick myself for not ever seeing him live every day. What a voice. this guy was insane how spot on he was even in his older age. and we are talking about someone who smoked weed and had a drink before he went on stage he openly admitted he did not do warm-ups either. What??? I mean WTF how is this possible? If he would not have passed away I would have thought he was a vampire or robot because who does that night after night and has no effect on your voice? Ronnie was one of a kind. There will never be another ever. Great video brother keep them coming,

When Ronnie James Dio sings he' s a fire breathing dragon. Every album he sings on is a milestone. Rainbow Rising, Heaven and Hell, Mob rules, Holy diver, the list is just as long as his dicography. Whenever he spoke or sang you're obliged to listen. He's a master storyteller. All of these things he combines with everything you said spot on pitch, larger than life stage pressence and a very human and humble man. While knowing his own worth.

Dio is one of my favorite singers. I wish you would have also addressed how he could sing softly and melodicly and with such clarity and conviction. Also what I love most is how he uses so many colors in his singing style. When I hear people say that someone sounds just like Dio, I will hear the similarity in tone and power, but never in expression. That's what makes Ronnie a truly great singer, for me.

Ronnie had the best tone of voice I've ever heard. He was a tenor but the fullness of his tone made him sound like a baritone. He could sound raw and edgy, but his voice could also be very soft. He was also often better live than in studio (like in the clip you showed). He was the most complete singer ever in my opinion.

I am fascinated by singers who sound better live. Another channel's analysis mentioned the acting ability of Ronnie on stage. He didn't just sing, but performed the song. And it's obvious he loved performing. Its too sterile in the studio. I suspect Ronnie needed an audience to bring out his best.

    • @holydiver1376

What comes to mind for me first about Dio was his hands. The first time I saw him live, I was so far away from the stage that I could barely see him, but I was still able to make out each finger on his hands. The reason was that in every gesture that he made on stage, he carried tremendous energy through his whole body and he expressed everything with such great specificity. I direct Shakespeare professionally, and I love to see that kind of specificity and energy in any live performance. I always harboured a secret desire to direct him as Prospero in The Tempest. To me, he was the single greatest stage performer I ever saw, in any artform.

Not only was Dio a phenomenal singer, but he was also very kind to up and coming struggling musicians. In the 80's, I was a front man for a rock band in Texas. It was a big weekend for me, as we had a club gig on Friday, and I had tickets to the Dio show on Saturday. Halfway through our set at the club, I see this mountain of a man pushing his way though the crowd towards the bar....and who does he have in tow....none other that Dio and Vivian Campbell. They got drinks and stayed to watch the last part of the show, and they were kind enough to speak with us after we finished, and had words of encouragement for us. I had the opportunity to see Dio in Rainbow, Black Sabbath and solo.....all were incredibly awesome.

Hi Ken, it's so awesome that you do Dio first in your series of "what make's this singer great". Ronnie James Dio was THE singer who first inspired me to sing. I heard two albums: "Rainbow Rising" and "Mob Rules" and I heard his voice and I was playing bass at the time, and I just said to myself - you know what?- this is what I want to do - sing with the power and tone that this person has, bass guitar is not for me anymore. I never went back to bass. Dio is just pure power and melody combined.

Totally agree with you. When Ozzy departed from Black Sabbath and was substituted by Dio. The replacement took Black Sabbath to the top of the top on the metal at that time and both of them have a distinctive touch, voice and presence on their own. And when Dio was on Rainbow it was also amazing the good combination of all instruments and the sound that Richie Blackmore wanted to create with Rainbow back then, Mr. Dio met it very well. But when Mr. Dio finally decided to go on by himself and formed his supportive fellows or band members then he reached the level I think was looking for. More projection not only of his amazing vocals but also that combination of sounds and instruments he wanted. And mainly, the harmony on each records and that presence on stage he had.

Awesome type of video, awesome content and awesome singer. I love this very dramatic and apparently exaggerated way he sings. It's like he was taking the feelings or ideas he wanted to transmit with the song and stretching it right in front of your face against your will😂 Very daring. Of course I wouldn't like it with every artist or song, but this guy knows how to do it in a way that's very cool and theatrical, as Ken said.

I have been a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio since the 80´s and i have heard and seen him live a number of times and have heard and seen countless of live bootleg recordings and videos as well as official recordings and i agree about the consistency. You dont need to see/hear official live recordings that may or may not be edited to hear a great performance, you can pull up any old bootleg, sure the soundquality isnt always there, but you can be sure the vocal performance is killer, he never held back.
Dio really had it all to be one of the greatest metal singers to ever live and he knew how to use his abilities, his music and singing has touched me deeply, he really was one of a kind and i really miss him.

Dio used a microphone as a prop because his voice didn't need it. He had volume and range that opera singers would be envious to have. I've listened to many excellent singers but Ronnie James Dio was in its own class. He exuded the definition of a metal music singer. I am stunned by the clear resonance and power of his voice without any struggle to reach his notes. He either learned to mimic vocal technique very well or he studied vocal placement. That's way too much knowledge.

This video has the most genuine smile I've seen on you in all your videos. It cant be because of anything else than the love we a feel for the late and great dear Ronnie. I met Ronnie once and he was such a nice man.
In regards to Ronnie I feel its worthwhile to note is audience skills in doing for example Heaven and Hell live. Is it possible not to sing along to it?
Love this series. I hope u do a real one on Freddie. Not just the obvious stuff, but the stuff that us musicians notice. Like that he started with a quite immature voice i 71 and forged it to a cannon towards the late late 70s, before he blew it out and never really recovered for live work. He got severe throat nodules and for example had a steroid shot in the throat before live aid. Where he lasted about 10 minutes until hammer to fall poor man. Though his highest studio note in mixed/full voice is on the Barcelona album. At 4:51 in "The Golden Boy" ( new orchestrated vers.).
That Freddie had problems and still stood on the stage to the best of his ability is one of his most laudable traits. Then of course he wrote and played all the amazing stuff in addition.
I think y have the cahonas to tell it straight, because thats when the real greatness of an artis comes across.

"giant roaring lion" indeed! What I admire most about Dio was his passion. He gave 100% PLUS to what he did. He simply cannot be emulated without that level of passion. My opinion. :)

Ken, check out Jorn Lande too. Jorn filled in for RJD after Ronnie passed away, so that Heaven And Hell could fulfill an obligation to an outdoor festival they had.

Dio was such a phenomenal artist and singer...and a phenomenal human being, too. He is sorely missed, but his music has so much life in it, it's almost like he's still here, in a way.

RJD...just wow...a man who honed his craft flawlessly. It mattered to him and it showed when he performed. Rock meets opera, meets theater...meets dungeons and dragons lol...very cool ahead of his time. He created a genre in my opinion. THANK YOU KEN for bringing attention to him. God Bless.

Awesome Review Ken. Ronnie James is probably one of everybody's favorites, even people not into the heavy metal scene appreciate Ronnie's voice. I particularly loved Mask of the Great Deceiver he did with Kerry Livgren. Awesome singer and awesome review. Thanks for doing this series Ken, they are so cool.

He was not tall in stature, but definitely belongs to the big ones. I have been a huge fan ever since the 70's. Stellar voice, knew how to capture an audience with his whole performance and stage presence. And I can add, I had the pleasure of meeting him in person and he really was a nice guy.

I really like this new format, also Dio being the opener is a good omen . I suggest Bruce Dickinson next,as he always mentioned how Dio was and is his inspiration since he was a teen, after listening to Stargazer and the whole album "Rising" . But yeah there are so many other talented singers to cover , can't complain .

Great idea for videos. I have been looking for something like this.
    You mentioned you wanted feedback.
Now I have seen some of Rick Beatos videos (not to say all of them) and he breaks down a song into the seperate parts and shows why these are great. It would be awesome if you broke down the singers instrument (perhaps several songs) so we can see the all aspects of the singer. I have not seen so much of Dio myself, but I am sure he had a lot of cool little Dio things, that only he did. :)
And keep these videos coming. It is great!

    Hi Ken!
I purchased your "The Course Plus" over the weekend and I'm loving it!
I'm 16 and I've been singing and screaming for 4 years now.
I've always wanted to buy your course, but I couldn't afford it until you did that awesome sale!
Most of Volume 1 was familiar to me, but the things that weren't helped me understand some of my issues.
For example: There used to be a couple of notes on top of my chest range (d4-f4) that I could sing with ease when I was on stage, but I couldn't seem to hit them in my homestudio.
Now I know that it was due to the fact that I'd breathe deeper (to calm down before a difficult scene in a musical) and have better posture on stage thereby allowing my abdominals to be my source of power.
In studio I didn't feel the need to do so. I didn't know any better.
Can't wait to explore all of your course!
    Greetings from Germany,
    Dominik \m/

Dio was amazing he also knew how to make his voice bigger by adding in the keyboard pads and using counter melodies and different modes to make things seem bigger than they were.
Plus he was just bad ass.

I love Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great".
With you being a vocal expert, this is gonna be the start of an awesome series "What Makes These Voices Great".
Got some feedback for you Ken, not a criticism but Rick usually goes from start to finish of a song and dissects it as he goes. This didn't really follow any kind of path and was more of a chitchat about Dio...which is great but maybe some structure would help this series succeed.
Dio is a special singer and a unique voice that I personally miss and probably millions more across the world. Holy Diver is just an amazing song. I can't believe Holy Diver didn't get a mention.
    Love ya dude!

He's a bit of an obscure dark horse but maybe a video on Graham Bonnet? In my opinion he's the only Rainbow singer who had the power to actually match Dio and to quote one critic "had a voice that could drive a hurricane back"
