- SALOMON ULTRA GLIDE 2 first run and first impressions review. The new Salomon Ultra Glide 2 trail running shoe was one of the updates in 2023 I was looking forward to testing out. I was a big fan of the original version and I really think that shoe helped to put Salomon back on the trail running map. The fit was great on my foot shape and I enjoyed the level of cushioning in the midsole. However, there were a few things I thought could be improved, one of them being the poorly placed lace pocket on my the tongue! Let's see what changes have been made.
Really hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

The video I've been waiting for. I have to order new salomon. The soles of the old ultra glides are already worn out. Thanks Lloyd
I ran my first marathon last December (Honolulu, because no cut-off 😂) and it killed me because it was a road race. Give me trails any day, no matter how difficult! I train on both, but I definitely prefer the trails and Salomon is one of my go-to’s for trail running. Appreciate all the great reviews 😊
I loved the original ultraglides, was my replacement shoe for the evo speedgoats but im hearing these feel firmer, like you also pointed out. Hopefully they will bed in with a few runs because the original is a great summer shoe. Great content as always Loyd 💚
For my feet and style if running the ultra glide are the best for me the only downside is that if you get them wet they never dry out. As always thanks for your reviews Lloyd.
Hey Loyd. Thanks for the review. But after this video, I'll be sticking to my original Ultra Glides - still love this trail shoe. But do agree with extra lug depth needed 👊🏻
I've just ordered a pair of the original ultra glides as my 1st pair are now a bit threadbare, can't really justify buying this "updated" pair simply because I love the original and you can now pick them up cheap as chips 😅 great review pal I've been looking Forwards to this one.
Good review mate agree with the lace garage different from my other Salomon’s my problem was they were just underwhelming especially the midsole definitely not as good as the Profly + and the sizing is terrible I got the wide version & 1/2 size up and they’re still rubbing my little toe! Had to ease up the laces which then compromised stability and let debris in marketed as an Ultra shoe you’d definitely pick Xodus Ultra or SPG5 over this!
I picked up a pair last month, (on sale for some reason). Only done a few runs in them as im training for a road marathon, but there still feeling firmer than expected. Thought id use them for Serpent Trial 50K, but might have to reconsider my choice.
Good afternoon to Run4adventure and all the runners. Thanks for this new information about ultra glide2, Loyd. Here is my like. A nice monday for everyone. ⛰️🏃🌞
I own pair of UG2. Can’t compare with experience of UG1 (never owned). I can compare it against SG5s. Greatly prefer the balance of soft/spring/ground feel in the UG2. The lockdown on the SG is a dogs breakfast compared to the UG2. The SG upper allows for some give but the toe box is far narrower than the UG2. The UG2 has got a narrower midsole which gives me more confidence on technical terrain because it doesn’t feel like I’m going to trip up on the training wheel width the SG is known for. The price increase is lower than inflation impacting their supply/fabrication people - that means they’re making less money on the UG2 than the UG1. They’re sharing the cost rather than passing on in full. I can live with that.
The first version is on sale for 50% off so if you like the shoe but the cushion doesn’t last long enough… pick up two 😎
would love to see comparison video vs xodus ultra 2 but i understand it's been a while since release so there may not be enough interest from people
I love the Ultra Glide but my issue is I live in the tropics and when it gets wet the ultra Glide never dry but I love the shoe, I love how it feels and fit. What would you recommend that fits and feels similar but dries faster?
I enjoyed the original Ultra Glide and went through 2 pairs. The first pair got absolutely eviscerated during a week of trail running on Lanzarote. Fantastic week and a great shoe for those circumstances but nothing will survive a week of vulcanic rocks. The second pair was used during winter running and the lack of grip didn't really do it for me. They're super comfy and work on many different levels but I really would've enjoyed a little more grip on mud and slippery surfaces. I never had any issues with the midsole compressing or anything like that. I got 600km out of the first pair and 800km out of the second pair and I retired those early.
Looking at the video I can't really visually spot any differences. It kind of feels like they've just released a new series of colorways. That is fine. Don't try to fix things that aren't broken I suppose. For my preference the outsole could've used a bit of TLC.
The Ultra Glide does struggle in muddy conditions, I don't think it's a shoe for winter running 🤔
Like I said in the video, it woukd have been good if Salomon had put a slightly deeper lug on the outsole. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏
I’m on my 4th pair of the original version. Can get them now here in Canada 🇨🇦 for less than 100 dollars so very reasonable. I have over 400 miles in the previous 3 pairs and that includes running in the winter on frozen asphalt and snow for 5 months so I felt the need to clarify their durability from a rugged Canadian winter and trail running perspective. Great review but I think the Peregrine 13 is a more versatile grippy shoe now for trails. Battle of shoes time?
I have just moved to Canada and they are on sale for $80 delivered RIGHT NOW! Thanks to your comment I will be clicking BUY!! hahah
13:14 Bought the new Salomon pulsar SG 2 and had a very similar experience. There is no real discernible difference to the pulsar SG 1..
have Salomon taken a leaf out of Apples book with the iPhone?
My foot shape I swear is the same as yours as we like similar shoes, even wear a 9.5 Uk but went up to a 10. I loved the Ultra glide 1 and it didn’t flatten out, got to 400 miles and rather than the Hoka M or Xodus went for the Ultra 2. Found the same as you same shoe but without the magic. But loving the Nike Wildhorse 8 better in the mud with the 5mm lug. Love the content, keep doing your thing!
I like the shoe pretty much, except the quicklace pocket. I don't get it, why Salomon does not improve that
Next review, Asics Trabuco Max 2 please 🙏🙏🙏
Unfortunately I've got no shoe budget left at the moment! 😕
I'll see what I can do Ganga and thanks for watching 🙏😊
I would love a comparative between the Sense 5 and the Ultra glide 2 Please
Watch this space, thanks for watching 🙏😊
There seems to be a trend with more stack, more foam and firmer midsoles. I don't get it. Sounds like the first version is the shoe to try. Off course in the wide version, cause these Salomon shoes are sooo narrow
V1 my problem was mid-sole didn’t last. Maybe 200 miles. I think a firmer ride might be better
I heard a few runners having the same issue with the original midsole. I never had it myself but I totally agree, that's why Salomon have made it a bit firmer Todd 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
Hi Loyd. Been hanging on for this video but decided not to pull trigger on the V2 after my V1 have lost all their early bouncy energy return magic after 160 miles and they now feel firm and lifeless which is big disappointment and with the V2 being almost identical the result is likely to be the same. Also the £140 price tag is too much so I’ve gone for theSaucony Ride 15TR which I’ve picked up for a bargain £80. The road version has been my go to daily for the last year so I’m hoping the trail version will be the same.
I heard a few people saying the same thing about the midsole loosing it's bounce quickly. I didn't have this issue with my pair, the midsole still feels ok? I've never been a fan of brands when they take a road shoe and make a "trail" version. The shoes been designed to run on a flat, repetitive surface so they tend to struggle on the trails. Hope you enjoy your shoes and thanks for watching Ian 🙏😊
@@Run4Adventure yeah I’m with you Loyd but I’m a lightweight trail runner really and nothing technical and also spring to autumn so my trails in the new forest and hard packed so need a road to trail. I ordered a pair Nike peg trail 4 but didn’t like the fit so sent back. Thanks for taking time to reply 👍
Hi there. It was told that the ultraglide 2 had been improved by adding an Ortholite sockliner, is that point trurh?.
I've checked the insoles in both the Ultra Glide and the Ultra Glide 2 and they look the same Bernardo.
To be fair an insole is never going to make a massive difference unless it's sometihing like an inov8 Boomerang footbed 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏
Hello there Run4Adventure Having said that I am now using the Hoka torrent 2 and I really like the fit of the shoe on my foot as well as the firmness of the sole and the feel on the ground.Which Salomon shoe would you recommend for my next pick? I've also got my eye on the Hoka speedgoat 5 and the Saucony Peregrine 12, but overall I want a shoe that I can run up to 50k on trail and technical terrains.
Hi Ivailo
If you've really gor on with the Hoka Torrent 2, why don't you just get another pair? Or you could get the new Torrent 3 👍
I'd say the closest feeling Salomon shoe to the Torrent woukd be the Sense Ride. The Speedgoat is a very different feeling shoe compared to the Torrent 🤔
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
@@Run4Adventure First of all I want to thank you for the extremely fast response. I want to say that I find your videos extremely helpful and want to thank you for them. My torrent 2 is less than 150-200k and so far it looks brand new, but the problem is that I suffer from blue toenails after steep descents (maybe I need a size up). But the main reason I'm looking for new shoes is I'm new to trail running and the torrent 2 are the only specialized shoes I've used and I'm sure there are better shoes out there with a better ground feel and slightly improved cushioning than the torrent 2. You mentioned that the Ultra Glide 2 are stiffer than the Ulta Glide, would you recommend them as a replacement for the Torrent 2, or say would you recommend the Salomon Pulsar Trail? I know it's hard to make a recommendation with so little information but...😄🙏Thanks again for the great content.
@@i.dimitrov3721 Thanks again, I'm gkad you're enjoying the channel. I'd say it sounds like you definitely need to go up in size, maybe half a size to start with. If you add more cushioning to the midsole, you'll loose more ground feel. The Torrent actually give pretty good ground feel and it does have a decent level of cushioning. Also something to think about is the two Salomon shoes you've mentioned will be a bit narrower in the toe box than your Torrent 2's. I'd always recommend going to a running shop and try lots of different shoes on, especially if you're new to trail running 👍
I found the original UG firmer than expected so will be giving these a miss.
If you found the original shoes firm then the new update is definitely not for you Jim 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
I have the UG2 in the same size as the Xodus Ultra and I feel with the Salomon's my big toe is heavily pressed during steep descents. Also the place doesn't seem to be providing as much protection as the XUs.
The UG2 definitely sizes smaller than the Xodus Ultra, I’ve got the UG2 in a uk10 and the XU in a uk 9.5 👍
Thanks for the review. Now I'm pretty sure I'll wait for a better update...
Or forget about it.
I guess I'm awaiting the arrival + expecting a lot more from the...
Xodus U²
Now, the UG²" getting firmer" proves they (Salomon) have an issue with their midsole formula. Die quickly or dead firm out of the box - not my favorite set of options...
That's why my excitement for Pulsar Trail died down 🤔
I bought a pair in my usual size recently and they run small. My toe hits the end which is frustrating. I can wear them for short distance training but unable to wear them in races which I’m gutted about as they are a lovely comfortable shoe.
I did mention in the video that they size up small. I went up half a size in mine and they fit well 👍
@@Run4Adventure unfortunately I bought mine a month ago. I was thinking about this whilst on a run, I’ve now wasted £140 and we’ve all probably done this. Why don’t manufacturers actually write the length of the insole on product information, eg 272 mm. Do you think that would help ? Maybe a topic on a video ?
Completely opposite for me. I wear 12 in everything!! And these are close to a 1/2 size too big!
Iv just ordered a part of the originak saloman pulsar s labs for a 58k trail race i have coming up, i here conflicting reviews on whether they are suitable for ling distances, do you have a view? I have the saucony edge at the moment but unless im running fast they dont feel great for longer distances. Any other recommendations?
The Pulsars are quite stripped back but you should be ok for 58k, I wouldn't want to run much further than that. I find the Endorphin Edge really comfortable but it can be quite unstable on tech trails. I'm a massive fan of the Xodus Ultra for distance, I also like the Mafate Speed 4's 👍
Hope this helps Charlie and thanks for watching the channel 🙏
@@Run4Adventure thanks alot, thats helpful. Really enjoy your content, thanks again
@@chimpas88 Cheers Charlie 👍
@Run4Adventure thanks for your recommendation! I had to send the pulsars back, too tricky to get into. I went for the original xodus *runshield - beautifully comfortable. Love them
@@chimpas88 That's awesome Charlie 👍😊
So.. how was the fit? True to size? 1/2 long?
I've gone up half a size to a uk10 like I said in the video and the upper fits just right 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
@@Run4Adventure Interesting. I almost had to go down half a size. I thinks due to salomons euopean sizing and rounding to US
@@runnerwatch2280 It's really hard to go off euro sizes, they do vary a lot between running brands 👍
I thought the crazy-long lace and garage issue was a mistake on my pair of shoes! I didn’t realize it was a design feature that they somehow decided to keep for the second version!
Salomon is just too narrow. Saucony is where it's at for me. And altra of course.
Ordered the s labs and I’ll have to return them :(
@@leorunsoregon2082 Yup, Hoka and Salomon just wanna annihilate my toes tbh. I'd love to wear those but I can't.
Is this a review about the shoes or your legs?
Pretty sure it's about the shoes 👍
Why would you run a half marathon when you can run a marathon distance? 😮😊
Why wouldn't you? Every distance brings you different challenge. Obviously the shorter the distance the harder and faster you push. I've run 100 miles, does that mean I can only run 100 mile races? 🤔😊
