- Guitar cover with tabs of Sphinx by Gojira, from their album Fortitude.
Tuning - D Standard - DGCFAD
A groove driven song with some interesting quirks. Most of the song has an octave pedal on it. Set to -1 octave and bled in a mix of wet and dry signal. During the chorus Joe using a whammy pedal +1octave, possibly +2. Again blend in to taste. I used the stock logic plugins for this and they worked pretty well on the whole.
The main riff is used a lot throughout the song but subtly changes during the bridges at the end and has a slightly straighter feel with an extra F note replacing an E.
The pinch harmonic section is layered up on the recording, but is simply pinch harmonics on the 2nd/2rd fret on the 5th string. I added a 1/4 note delay and reverb for good measure.

Gojira are the masters of simplicity. In a genre where players are trying to play as fast as possible or tie their fingers in a knot, Gojira is killing it with things that mere mortals can play.
Guitar wise, yes. This doesn't apply for the drums though. xD

tbf, some of their earlier songs are stamina tests, especially like Where Dragons Dwell and Backbone
@@infernalsquid yea so true. It might seem easy to play Gojira songs with your left hand, but your picking hand is what it’s all about. songs like “Esoteric surgery” and “wolf down the earth” will challenge you’re picking hand.
this is one of their most underrated songs. a lot of people dont like fortitude because its not as heavy as their other albums but songs like sphinx and amazonia are among their best songs imo

Excellent. What effects and signal chain are you using in your Logic for this tone? Also, how are you mixing this and programming your drums mate?
I typically still use the Le456 plugin from LePou, or ignite amps emissary sim with a combination of impulse responses. Often use the TSE 808 too as a tube screamer replacement and to tighten up the low end. Then it's quite a few stock plugins like compression and EQ. I do use a Waves SSLchannel strip a fair bit to add in a bit of top end and also use JST side widener and clip. Drums are midi from a guitar pro file and then run through Steven Slate Drums.

Really good cover! The part that confuses me is the up stroke harmonic pick on the 5th fret in the main riff (done in two parts of the song but can be heard at @0:15). I've seen the actual guitarist do it by moving his hand up the fretboard and sliding down it in the music video which is how you're playing it, but your tab reads it differently and is the way I'd expect to play it to be honest, so I really don't know therefore how the recorded version is being played?
Yeah the tab is kinda incorrect, it shows a muting up pick but I guess it’s supposed to be a harmonic like he does in the video. I personally think in the recorded song it sounds like a harmonic pick slide. Gojira does a lot of mysterious harmonics like in the middle section of their song clone, I believe they use a pinch harmonic and a pitch pedal but I use thumb harmonic and whammy bar.
Sorry for the slow reply. It's a mix of pinch harmonics while raking across the strings more than natural harmonics. I've not found a good way to notate it on tab as it's not really played on a specific fret. I have a video up on Gojira pick scrapes ua-cam.com/video/OQ1sgde3Tnw/v-deo.html
As mentioned in the first comment on my video there's an interview with Joe and the fretting hand is more for visual effect than doing anything special - even I got caught out by it when explaining in my video

@@ShadowMantraSteve I managed to work it out in the end. From what I can see in live performances, it's an upstroke on the 9th fret (harmonic) straight to the E minor power chord (tuned down, so a D). Looks like a slide but it's not which is what confused me.
