Oh god. G-man *and* Nicholas Cage? This is much more terrifying than I remember.
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Should have waited for the remastered version where they are all replaced with Bowsette.
You don't say :D
Cage got me laughing
"F*** Everything And Run" is what I knew this game as haha
LMAO
This made me laugh pretty hard haha
Fettel Eats Alma’s Rejects
I Really hate those Flashes on the Screen tho.
Shit gives me a Migraine.
God dammit! XD
"Mr. Point Man I don't feel so good" haha
"I don't wanna go..."
Best moment of the entire game: I shot at an overhead projector and watched the picture it was projecting bounce all over the wall. Oh. My. God. Never seen that before
The moment I fell in love with the gamr was when I was at low health, hiding behind a table. Behind me was a fire extinguisher. I heard a replica soldier yell: "Shoot the fire extinguisher!". I died. My mouth was agape.
My favorite moment was when I entered a bathroom and when I looked into the mirror I saw the ghost girl and instantly shot at her mirror image then turned around and of course she wasn't there anymore
the best moment was seeing that naked chick in the end
F.E.A.R. is one of the best FPS games of all time.
Easily.
Yes. My Avatar (Cate Archer) is from NOLF. I've played a little of the first. It's pretty cool. Want to pick back up on it soon. Also kind of hoping LGR covers it at some point.
What a game. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
It's AI can only be rivaled by the Halo games (at least up until Reach). Enemies flipping tables to take cover, trying to flank you, throwing grenades to flash you out, jumping through windows, it blew my mind back then. Too bad in FEAR 2 they didn't put much of a fight even on harder difficulties. They kinda fixed it with 3 but they removed the horror aspect almost completely there.
Graphics are amazing too. If only it had ambient occlusion and better blood it could potentially look almost as good as a modern game!
Holy cow is this even retro? Still looks good up to this dayyyyyy. I'm amazed 😍
Ikr. For a game from 2005, FEAR looks amazing.
@@VeeTHis just for a game in general
yeah! the graphics might not be anything super special by modern standards, but by the looks of it they do hold up really well!
Its almost 20 years old. We live in the future. Still I miss the mid to late 2000s gaming era, it was just better then. Even multiplayer gaming. And of course a living modding/mapping community. Gaming also wasn't as mainstream as it is today.
Damn, 13 years already, remember it like yesterday though.
This is one of the only games with realistic mouse pads at the work stations. 10/10.
Ah, I was waiting for this video. F.E.A.R. is my favorite FPS, and I would argue that a big part what made it so memorable was not the combat or graphics, but the sound design. The sound effects in this game are criminally underrated. One of my most favorite video game memories is playing this game, and skittishly navigating a corridor, until my character accidentally kicked a soda can on the ground, and in middle of perfect silence, it gave me mini heart attack, because the sound was so clear and realistic. Also, the next time you play the game, notice how the enemies die; when their ragdolls fall on the floor, the sound effects convey a real feeling of weight, and it's very realistic. This is a problem most games still suffer from today, where the things you kill, do not have a sense of weight to them, and they just seem like weightless shapes falling over. F.E.A.R. excelled in details like these, and they're overlooked, because when they're done well, you don't notice. It just works. This game is awesome.
So very true. Shit made in 2018 cant hold a candle to this. All those fancy graphics but no substance.
Deathshuck heck yah
Not to mention that lighting. Even having an explosion knock a ceiling light. That would swing realistically with the light beam to match
Man those soda cans gave me the creeps! I'm playing for a second time and I HAD to turn the sound FX down because I just love my life too much
See if this is what you looked for and noticed back in the day when ykou were younger you probably have a good eye and insight on new games that come out now yea there were people back in the day who played this but did the type of things that you found impressive did they eveb notice or was it something that caught there eye although i would have only been 11 i think when this game came out (05' right?) I would have had intrest in the same details you mention you have that desire to be immersed into a game and its those type of gamers who have the most memorable and emotional instances with a game a lot of people/kids blaze though a game and never attempt to exploit all mechanics and physics that it has to offer but by the way you described the attention to detail and it still is something you can recall upon today just shows you were really into games back then as i was and others were to seeing it for more then a shooting game but what is the construct of that shooting game beyond a choice of guns and enemies
Man breakable crates instead of game breaking crates. I miss the old days
what a fantastic game
it kidda like dark soul 😜😜😜

@Vulpes Inculta Still an amazing game
@@IBeatSlaughterhouse true
YOUR MOM
Still, one of the most immersive games to this day, all because A.I. gives actual challenge.
true my friend, what a game
Yeah the a.i. was amazing, but a big part of the immersion was also due to its atmosphere and design, it made you feel like you were in an actual office building plus everything was destructible and shit. Add to that the a.i. using actual squad tactics and changing up the routines on the fly and you have a game that was way ahead of its time.
Have we ever seen AI like this again?
But its 50 bucks on steam
@@melvinjansen2338 Not that I am aware of, at least not as immersive. There is no other better example than Extraction Points DLC where you fight thru the highly varied Funeral Home. So many different ways that battle can come out!
I've played through the campaign more times than I could count since I first played it around 2007 and still do occasionally. There's just something to the combat mechanics, feel of the weapons, the brilliant AI and the all out mayhem gunfights with muzzle flashes, sparks, smoke and chunks of debris that makes this such a deeply satisfying experience that no FPS since has really managed to top in my opinion. Oh and I still love the engine in this game, the graphics quality holds up well over a decade later, with textures and lighting effects that manages to outshine current titles in some regards and a level design that feels eerily realistic and immersive even to this day. And the sound, goddamn the sound design and music in this game alone makes it worth replaying over and over, it has a gloomy, ominous atmosphere like nothing else and makes me feel dread and unease every time despite countless times playing it. I know this game has gotten a lot of praise and has a loyal fanbase but I still think its an underrated title in the eyes of mainstream gaming. To me this game is significant on so many levels and the greatest leap the genre took since the Quake and original Half-Life days.
That ladder scene where the girl was there... that’s where I noped out on my first play through. Was like a week before I continued playing.
Took me about 3 years.
People used to criticize the repetitive level design, but I simply love the office/enterprise setting.
yep, I remember that, there's always haters
Soooo great
The people who criticize it are clearly those who have never worked in an office like this. They absolutely nailed the corporate cube farm feel.
fear dont feel repetitive but doom 4 is repetitive
The level design benefits both the player and the AI as it gives both plenty of spots to take cover and avenues for flanking. The AI needs such level design to be as effective as it is since they only have 4 hardcoded instructions.
3:35 - I seriously laughed out loud. Good catch on the story telling similarity!
That bit at 10:46 is exactly what I was about to comment as my most standout memory of this game. Especially when she continued to dissolve in to what I remember to be black birds, but maybe it was just smoke.
Freaky!! I remember this arriving alongside COD 2. What a great weekend that was.
This ladder jump-scare is engraved on my mind. My heart beat goes up just by thinking of it.
Yep, I never played the game myself but watched a friend play it for a little bit while at his house. It just so happened he was playing around this point and naturally it's a memory I've had since haha
you know alma would have been enough, but meeting this guy right after was just a bit too much for my heart back then lol.
First thing that popped into my head: "I know that ladder".
That and the 2x4 to the face were the most effective jump scares in that game for me.
This ladder....i played a demo and they had this ladder, Alma on top, you move down it , turn around BOOM next jumpscare....then the full version was released, i was a wreck when the ladder came, and still it worked its magic, incredible scene, incredible game, too bad the sequels were a letdown imo
Something about fighting those soldiers in dark office buildings stood out as one of my favorite atmospheric bits of this game.
The "normalcy" of the environments made it so visceral.
YES. So glad to see you drop this video so soon after mentioning your interest in covering this game! F.E.A.R. is an absolute gem and to this day stands as one of the finest FPS experiences, bar none. Excited to hear what you have to say about the game, but please accept a preemptive like, because I know I'm gonna love this.
The Dennis Nedry reference was PERFECT!
"Ah! Ah! Ah! You didn't say the magic word!"
Even by today's standards this game is outstanding. I like to revisit it from time to time alongside the second.
F.3.A.R. though... not so much. It wasn't bad, but eh
F Three AR is a surprisingly solid game with some funny cutscenes and that really cool mall level, shame that you have to chip through several layers of blatant publisher meddling to get there
I feel about F.3.A.R. the way I do about the Max Payne movie: it was a good movie, but a terrible Max Paynr movie. F.E.A.R. 3 was a good game, but a terrible F.E.A.R. game.
@@OkyDooky I agree, played f.e.a.r. 3 and i love it if i see it as something other than a f.e.a.r. game otherwise i hate it. But hey, it tried it's best and Fucking run was an amazing gamemode.
I've only played 1 and 2 and although I love the story I was disappointed in part 2 when they decided to make the dead girl the Big Bad essentially. In part 1 I always felt that even though she killed a few civilians that she was actually the victim.
Before finishing pt2 I was wishing that she would actually be vindicated in some way, but instead by the end of 2 the studio turned her into purely a villain.
That and hearing that 3 was "ehh" and I haven't even tried to see if 3 run on my potato.
I remember playing it on the 360. The whole game was much darker. Only added to the horror!
you should have lit some BULBS so to make it LIGHTER
*Well Clint, you said you were going to make this in your 3,000$ PC video and you did! You always follow through. :)*
He never pulls out!
*( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)*
i hope he did play it on said amazing pc
OMG, that moment when you're crawling through the air vent and the girl appears and rushes you is STILL the most scared I've ever been in a game
What got me was the jumpscare immediately after the ladder scare with Alma. I was already expecting her at the top but I HAD no idea about the guy waiting at the bottom. Almost like they knew people would have the ladder scare spoiled in reviews and videos so they added that.
for me it was that first bit with the floating face in the hallway, i remember playing that back in 2005, installing and starting it up still not entirely sure what i'd bought, and then saying out loud alone in my room at night "oh, it's going to be this kind of game". i still get chills thinking about that.
god i loved this game.
yea me too.... #metoo... i think im gonna go play it, as i always have it installed on my steam ^_^
oh you watch Sharla too!
same!!
same
Does anybody know where I can get a digital copy of this game without spending $54 on Steam? Physical copies are $8 on Amazon but I don't feel like investing in a DVD drive just for one game... So I suppose the question is: if I buy a physical copy will the CD key activate on Steam?
Brilliant game. There were some truly cinematic, slow motion moments that happened to me that were entirely unscripted but a product of the AI, the combat mechanics and the world physics. More than any other game I can remember.
An LGR upload always brightens my Mondays and Fridays.
Another great video Clint! I love these retrospectives so much!
This game is an infinite classic.
Great review, those nick cage and g man spoof really made me laugh! You forgot to mention this is the few games that utilizes EAX, I played it back then on 4 channel speaker and I physically move my head backwards when the door slammed behind me!
IMO during this time is the pinnacle of where visual and audio fidelity is in harmony, as current games were very good in terms of visual, but lacks in audio department. This game and Doom3 shows how a good positional audio really make great atmosphere in games.
F.E.A.R and LGR have two things in common. They're both acronyms and they're both the best at what they do.
4:41 Man, that got me right in the feels. Never have I felt so in control in a FPS or since.
"Mr Pointman, I don't feel so good!" Why did that make laugh so much, i love you LGR
Hi Clint, you sounded a bit down/unsure of your channel at the end of the last video. Personally, I am liking the channel more than ever - you're content is excellent in terms of camera work and scripting, so don't be down on yourself or the channel :) In any case, hope you are doing good internally.
And externally!
And multitutionally..
I absolutely love the comedy put into these reviews. The Nic Cage vision had me rolling xD
I took a drink of water at 4:33 and nearly spit on my monitor.
I could feel the adrenaline in my veins, it was captivating literally, constant pressure and unknown wirh no bs scarines i can remember. It was a workout in the middle of the night alone in my silent dark room. Some of my friends could not bear the stress and did not finish it. Still the best gaming experience for me...
Can you review S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of chernobyl the story behind that game is interesting to say the least and it came out around 2007.

Sorry I guess I can just hear that being said by him if he heard this! :D
The Steam version is permanently bundled with its two sequels whether you want them or not. If you just want the first game, buy it from GOG or Humble.
Both Gog.com and Humble Store only offer the Platinum edition aswell.
To my knowledge you can't buy the main game seperately on any platform.
The sequels, not the expansions. F.E.A.R. 2 and F.3.A.R. are permanently tied to the Steam version, and their inclusion inflates the price to $55.
I see, I thought you meant the expansions when you said sequels. I had them fresh in the mind after I watched the video.
Not the case for me. It's probably a regional thing. I'm in Japan. I'd still much rather buy the GOG version though. DRM sucks.
I loved this game when I was younger. One of the scariest games I ever played.
I’ve tried to forget, I’ve tried so hard to forget...
Don't leave me here again.
Alma just wants hugs... hug people to death for treating a child that way. ofc a kid cant control themselves let alone god like powers. Stupid plots trigger me.

One of the best games ever created and if not - the best all time FPS for me - superb gunplay, spooky atmosphere, great story!
"Eerie ambiance"
Now you've gone made me want to watch your "Last Half of Darkness" LPs with Roses AGAIN, even though I had just done that again only a couple of months ago! I hope you're happy, Clint. =P
This game is still in my top 5 favorite shooters. The experience of this game was just awesome. Spooky, psychological but still a straight up military shooter. The atmosphere is unmatched and game play goes from silent exploring to full blown spray and pray action and explosion's
"Do you know the meaning of F.E.A.R.?" I still remember that intro and the trailers for the game, lol. Great game.
Third time watching this after finishing the main game and the expansions. Thanks for the awesome content LGR!
Fantastic game, one of my favourite FPS games and genuine jump scares!
As always, great video. I love me some subtle video edits that do not detract from the "story" at all.
I don't know what scared me the most: the girl appearing on the ladder or cage's apparition! Awesome.
2019, this game still looks very good!, makes me wanna play it!.
one of the best fps i've played, top 3 for sure.
Play it!!!
The AI in this game is actually a result of a level designer and enemy designer working close together like the loveliest kind of marriage.
I'm not a big FPS fan but I loved this series. Unloading your weapon whenever some jumpscare gets you is great fun.
Done it numerous times but what really caught my attention was the voice mail messages left on phones and some of the stuff you learn of your boss from data hacked from laptops that have been left lying around or discarded in Armachan's headquarters complex and then the true horror of what they had been doing more to the point what Harlan Wade had been doing in the way of experiments dawns on you and you then realize that point man realizes who he truly is it's a stunning and sobering shock on learning. A fantastic game over all.
Let's not forget all of the references to Office Space.
Wait what?!
The office areas are littered with red staplers and TPS reports.
I don't know why but a bunch of LGR classic episodes are flooding my feed... and of course I love it.
i remember when i first played this game, and the scariest things were the encounters with the fat IT guy.
Great video, thank you! I vividly remember playing F.E.A.R. for the first time. My PC wasn't really powerful enough, so I created a custom 16:9 resolution and played in "cinematic" widescreen :D It has a benchmark built-in, so I use quite a bit for that and the graphics and sound are excellent.
Been keeping my food warm to watch this video!
Excellent video my friend. I played this on PC back in the day and loved it. Thanks for bringing back all those good memories.
3:56 "feddles recent happy meal leftovers"

Hi Clint, Thank you! ^_^
The editing in this perfect! Love your videos LGR!
Free multiplayer? Why not charge $60 for it?

And never fix the bugs
I just like you so much - I played FEAR on the 360 when it came out, a bit, but just listening to your take on things makes me smile. Please keep doing what you do, man, it's always really great to hear your positive take on wonderful things :)
That god damn ladder gave me one hell of a jump. When I was playing the expansions I was pretty confident that they won't try the same trick twice.
I was wrong.
This is one of my all time favorites too! The TPS reports, the red Swingline stapler, the Longshoreman magazines, the phone messages, the AI discussion - I love it all! I bought a BFG 6800Ultra OC for my 478 Asus board just to run the snot out of this game. I really liked Extraction Point too (and Perseus Mandate). But dear God in heaven... the Ed209's! Talk about real F.E.A.R.! I still remember my character cowering under a desk, trying to reload what little ammo I had during a brief reprieve from an Ed209 battle, when that SOB crashes through the ceiling to re-engage me! I bought the store version back then, but now I have the entire series from GoG. Thanks, Clint for covering another favorite!
You should have turned on Soft Shadows. They were taxing in the day, but greatly complimented those stencil shadows from afar .
@Mehdi Alfiguigui Oh, riight. Completely forgot about that. You were able to turn antialiasing on in your graphics cards control panel , but then the soft shadows had occasional white artifacts right in the softened areas.
About what you said about Fear2 . I would have forgiven everything about it if they wouldn't have ruined the physics and the shotgun. (P.s good eye on seeing those reused textures ) :)
What a great review! I enjoyed F.E.A.R. when it came out and this review made me want to revisit the entire first act and its expansions once again!
i remember seeing this on a game magazine as a hot new game of the month, something luxurious out of my reach. Now its considered a retrospect making me realize how fast time flies
Oh man, such a great game, I've played it recently and THAT ladder scene got me good for the second type, I remember being scared of ladders in videogames for years because of that stuff. Definitely had a great time playing and I'm going though Extraction Point now.
man, fear was so great! let's not talk about the sequels...
I just started a new playthrough after having played this game at launch back in the day. Amazingly it still holds up! The graphics might look dated but the gameplay is as awesome as it’s ever been. A true classic!

holy crap this is one of my all time favorites!!!! thank you for reviewing it!
OMG! My favorite game ever made.
Going down that ladder is the first scare I think of when I think of F.E.A.R.
This game was under rated. Everyone brings up Halo as an older game with amazing enemy AI, and while it did have great AI for the time, F.E.A.R. was even better. The devs had to scale down the AI because it was too good, since the AI is commanded by your own computer which knows every move you make. The enemy knew when to flank and make you move but it wasn't rigged to the point that you had no options. They had to balance that factor with the "fun factor," and did a fantastic job. I haven't had that much fun with AI since then. Maybe fucking with soldiers in Half Life 2 using wall radiators, that's about it.
Great review, man. This is going to motivate me to play through it again. It's been about a decade for me.
I still love the AI of this game. Still can't play it all the way through with the lights off...
@@CaveyMoth I can definitely agree with that
That Nic Cage flashing face joke is one reason why I'm still subscribed to this channel. xD

Perseus Mandate.

Hahahah Nicolas Cage
Great video. I LOVED the FEAR games. Recently went back to play FEAR 3 and it wasn't QUITE what I remembered it to be, but it still played fabulously and was an absolute blast.
I remember it being praised so much for the visuals and while i agree that they are certainly decent for the time, i always felt that HL2 and Max Payne 2 were much better looking games at that period. Still loved and enjoyed FEAR, good game
Only getting to this review in 2021 but mate, your scripting in this is just on point!!!! Bloody well written and edited review =D
Like many here this makes me remember just how good this game was, with mechanics, visuals and phsyics that we just take for granted these days. Oh and those benchmarking tools.... chasing those digits was one of my favourite past times with mates. Pretty sure this is what got me into overclocking
Who needs smart AI in game? None, we just need the enjoyable one to shoot at ... And this game... till nowadays, No other fps even close...
I mean, I like having to strategize to take down smart AI. Cannon fodder is great, but sometimes tiresome.
This has to be one of my favorite channels to just sit, relax, and watch!
Too bad they've ruined the series after the first game.
F.E.A.R 3 is a joke.
Okay to be honest, I liked F.E.A.R 3's gameplay. It's just not a F.E.A.R game at all. just a decent shooter.
I thought FEAR 2 was the best one due to the better variety of locals, and the super shit your pants school level. Plus the mechs, those were crazy fun.
@@thegreatbritishgamer751 it wasn't a bad game but it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
@@Ablequerq That's respectable, but i feel it did up the ante a bit with the action compared to the original for better or for worse. Especially to people who favoured the more amospheric first game.
Man, I love this game. I still play it once a year since 2005.
This game wasn't as powerful as it appeared to be. The developers used a lot of clever tricks to make the game engine, graphics, and AI seem better than they are. AI were dependent on already knowing the environment through and through, and graphics were kind of bad, but clever lightning made it look extremely good. The result was a very efficient game that was not very demanding compared to what it delivered. Perseus Mandate shows how simple the AI actually was, and how unimpressive the graphics actually were, by introducing environments that the game just wasn't built for.
I think that's a point in the originals favour. The programmers relied on skill to make a good game with limited technology, rather than just brute forcing big graphics and AI.
i loved the death animations and the impale gun witch shot huge nails and finally when u threw a grenade hearing the enemies cursing seconds before exploding!
