@@AwkwardYet Not really. Cayman has a total of 405 litre of storage space (front & back). That's almost three times of what you'd get in the Emira. BMW M2 has 390 litre of boot space + the whole backseat area to put our stuffs in. The Corvette C8 has a total of around 350 litre. And like Matt said, the Mustang even has a lot more (502 litre + back seat area). It's not necessarily a deal breaker for a lot of people, but those who own this car will find how much of a hassle it is to use as a weekend getaway vehicle, compared to its direct competitors.
What Lotus was able to do with this car at this price point it AMAZING! Super charged Toyota sourced V6 with the manual for me. No contest. Not only do you get to row your own gears which you can't do in many super cars but the fact this is a Toyota sourced engine means it is going to last with no issues for years to come and since this is the last gas powered car Lotus is making, reliability and longevity are more important now than ever before.
sorry to burst your bubble. this isn't a supercar. not even IF they meet the 4.2s, which is not sure as of yet. but what it is, it's a pure sportscar, at least in nowadays terms. and that's a lot. this is one for the real drivers. like a miata on steroids probably. can't wait.
@@hazardeur Thanks for your concern about bursting my bubble. I would rather have this Emira over just about any supercar out there. As you said, this is a car made for drivers. Unlike today's supercars, it has useable power, does not take up 2 lanes of traffic or feels like it does, is an incredible performance value and has that all important 6 speed manual. Another driver focused car I feel does not get enough attention is the Rezvani Best Alpha. That car is light, an amazing performer, has a 6-speed manual and is beautiful to look at.
@@hazardeur Yeah, the initial price was really too high. I think Rezvani was able to get the price down to $95,000 but those go fast parts and that carbon fiber body are expensive. With that said, makes you really appreciate the value of the Emira.
The V6 with manual for driver involvement and character, the 4 cyl with an ecu re map back up to 420 hp for outright performance 👌 it’s a great looking car and makes the Cayman look like a bit of a suppository
Honestly I think the Cayman's issue is the interior, it's just super bland and you expect it to be more interesting since it's a very interesting and fun car. Gotta admit I haven't sat in one but it doesn't look very qualitative either, but that's likely just my impression from visuals. Will agree that this Lotus looks way better though, not a contest.
@@xIcarus227 Because Lotus Evora 420hp gets like only 10hp with ECU tune. For +450hp you need headers, downpipe, SC pulley etc. Just got to face the fact that 20 year old V6 is not that good.
@@DuBstep115 I see you're actually right, judging by what the Evora is getting on the V6. That's pretty strange, I expected much more even though it's SC. The A7 TFSI SC for example gets like 80HP with a tune and almost double that if you add a pulley. Guess this engine isn't the same.
I’ll take the Toyota 2GR-FE V6 engine. In fact, I have that engine in my 2007 RAV4, and even though it’s not tuned to 400 hp, it still rips. And it’s bulletproof!
So nice to see a pure sports car, has to be the manual V6 for me! Hope it sells well, in this day and age this is probably one of the last manual petrol combinations we will see 🤞🏼
Porsche will probably be the very last man standing in building a manual ICE sports car. That or the MX-5 if Mazda can survive. One day everything else will be gone. No more Lotus, no more Civic Type R, no more WRX Sti, no more BMW M2/3/4, no more Toyobaru, no more Nissan Z, no more BMW Supra. It'll just be the cheap MX-5 and expensive 911 left probably.
Engines? The Merc as you could wind it up as it has been de-tuned. The Toyota because of reliability and the V6 sound. After all, Lotus used Toyota/Yamaha a lot inpast cars with their 2ZZGE engine which is a blast (and used in the Celica)
@@andrxito are you for real? The newer 5 pot VAG engine is disturbingly unreliable. I blew two up in 18months and the first one needed a new engine on warranty at 12k miles before I tuned it as it decided its crank bearing shells were no longer needed and rod 2 came through the block. People buy the 5pots knowing they are easily tunable but a time bomb. Same as the current 4pot turbo in Golf R etc, utter junk engine, easily tuned but easily blown up. i will go with the toyota supercharged engine for sure. should be more reliable and plus it comes in manual transmission which means it will be really engaging to drive.
The V6 will be better in the long run, last longer, and be more reasonable to service and repair than the 2L Merc 4 clylinder which has turbos that can break and be expensive etc. Plus I bet the V6 sounds better overall
The Toyota V6 from the Camry is lead-heavy and the compressor is not maintenance-free either. The bottom line is that the 6-cylinder costs at least as much to maintain as the 4-cylinder.
Amazing looking car inside and out. Fantastic exhaust note on the V6. Sounds very exotic. Probably about as quick as the new Z from 0-60, but that's not what this car is about. It's about a low production exotic looking car with decent performance, great handling and a manual. Biggest problem stateside will be that for similar money, you can get a new Corevette Z06...
But do we care? You make a deal when purchasing either one. You ain't getting a Z06 for the same money as this, dealers will mark it up by at least $30k. Also do you want a beast you can't unleash unless you're a professional and you want to break laws? Yeah, the electronics will keep you in check, but if you can't keep it on the edge without disabling them, you don't need that much performance, because you simply can't handle it. With the Lotus, you'll get the fun lost in the straights (compared to the Z06) back in the corners, you also don't need to be a racecar driver to touch the limits of what the car has to offer, and even then it could still catch you off guard.
@@whotf888 Believe it or not, there are still some dealers that don't charge over MSRP. Even in these crazy days. That being said, Lotus dealers will also no doubt charge a markup as well and it may be harder to find a dealer that sells at MSRP due to the MUCH smaller dealer network in the US. I think the Lotus will be competing mostly against Cayman S and Corevette Stingray. Similar price ranges, mid engine layouts but different approaches. I still like the new Lotus the best of the three, but I was also pointing out that the base price on the Z06 is similar to the Launch editions of the Lotus. Realistically, most supercars don't make it to the track, and most limits are never explored. The fact is that the Z06 makes Ferrarri sounds and power. Very impressive car for the money.
@@whotf888 Peter, the Emira First Edition here in the states start at $94K. That is before adm fees from dealers kick in. The C8 ZO6 will probably be in the same price range however, we have over 100 dealers here that sell at MSRP. Both the C8 ZO6 and 992 GT3 will do battle at the track. I don't think the Emira given it's performance metric will be in that conversation.
If anyone wants to know what the quoted 0-60 will be just look at the Evora 400 (essentially the same car mechanically and chassis wise). It’ll be quoted in the early to mid 4s (although Lotus have always used…interesting measures to get those times). Either way it’s definitely quicker than the time here would suggest. It’ll be in the same ballpark as the Cayman GTS 4.0 manual. That car is adored.
@@pxcs7559 the 2.0 AMG one uses merc's amg dual clutch so I believe that one with a stage 1 tune will be a bullet (since this engine tuned by brabus comes as 450 hp and 550 nm in A and CLA class, which I also believe is its top peak). Toyota's automatic for V6 is apperently really bad. Also I am not too familiar with this exact 3.5 V6's tuning possibility but by searcing online people get it up to 450-460 hp. So its only gonna be a matter if you prefere the sound of a V6 screamer (and soul of a car) or straight line performance with a 4 banger.
@@EtherOne Thats not an excuse... And its not a Z4. It rides very differently to a Z4. It shares the platform, engine and some other bits but its not the same car. BMW is probably making more money on every Supra sold than Toyota, lol.
The V6 is the only way to go, as it sounds fantastic and is the only way to get the manual transmission. The exterior design really is a stunner and interior design and quality looks great!
The Toyota V6 from the Camry is lead-heavy, the AMG engine is light and almost equally powerful and thus more in keeping with the spirit of Colin Chapman. Still, I won't buy either - too heavy, too comfortable, too mainstream and looks like a posh Fiat from Italy.

It's gotta be said, WELL DONE LOTUS. To build a car that can compete with obvious modern sportscars but looks like a car worth double the price! Nailed it 🔨
Actually the most interesting car you’ve reviewed for a while.. im a sucker for lotus, nice to see they’re still producing quality, for a lower price tag
A last affordable hurrah before the market changes completely. WELL DONE to then as they literally did the perfect driver car👍 The board definitely listened to the team.
It was between this and the GR Supra for me, and while I ultimately am too much of a fan of a good i6 and long hoods to have passed over Toyota's offering I still imagine myself driving this car quite often. 🤤 If only I had enough money for both... And no, the irony of it having a Toyota engine while the Supra doesn't isn't lost on me. 😋
If Toyota powered this epic little beasty why couldn't they have used THAT motor in the new Supra instead of patnering with BMW? It would've been so much bigger of a hit and certainly would've continued to live up to the legendary Supra name.
Rumor is a final version of the Supra with the S58 engine and a manual *may* happen (but it's been a rumor for awhile). Until then I'm leaning toward the 2023 M2. I would consider an Emira for the right price, definitely unique and last of it's kind
This is a real, honest, mechanical sports car. The engine choices are tough but something about a 4Cyl in a car like this feels kind of lacking, even if the specs are right on par. I’d take the V6, Manual, Sport package, in gray just like this… I’d just take this lol. Gimme gimme.
The one with an AMG engine is so much better because you already know that engine is capable of handling a lot more power so u can tune it to make more HP than the supercharged V6
This is the last production lotus that still has a manual and daily usability ,you shouldn’t shortlist it if you are a proper petrolhead you should if you of course have the means to do so go right ahead and buy it because you are not going to get another one like it ever again. At least not from lotus since it’ll only have electric sport cars in the future. That’s what they anouced that emira is the last petrol powered lotus. I am all for EVs but this feels like a fitting last hurrah for petrol from Lotus. And because it’s relatively lightweight and small engined I wouldn’t feel too embarrassed driving one!
Such a beautiful car! I had a tough time deciding between this and the C8 Z06. I ended up going on the Z06 waitlist mainly because of the engine, but I don't think I could have lost with either decision. This is hands down one of the best looking cars in recent years.
A wise decision. The Lotus is surely a looker, but I'm sorry, that interior is no better than an entry level Kia. The gauge panel feels aftermarket, and those controls are wiggling as though they're about to break. The Z06 is worth buying for its engine alone.
@@toddstephens4431 it's around $80k, probably much closer to the Z06 price once they finally reveal it. If the Emira was $60k like the Stingray then it would have been a no brainer
The Z06 is the better choice in this case I think. Normally I would go with the manual transmission. But the Z06 engine is so, so special. Though it is close tbh. It is very close, because this Emira looks infinitely better, such a hopelessly sexy car.
Hi John, Drove a manual Emira yesterday and shifting action wasn’t as good as expected. Not saying I’d change my mind on the manual I ordered but it certainly opens the door to the argument of the dual clutch and possibly (dare I say) a torque converter automatic! The shifter didn’t like to be rushed upon acceleration and rev-matching was not super smooth and gratifying like in many other sports cars (guessing a lighter flywheel would make the difference). Finally, the car was a PITA to get into gear (whether you attempted 1st or reverse). I was told by the rep you need to take the car out of gear and depress the clutch once or twice and try again. That worked but still took quite a bit of effort. This car had about 1500 miles on it.
@@Bottomsuptraining oh yeas, this trend with super downsized and so aggressively "pumped" engines literally makes me 🤮 That's why I'm still keeping up with my rusty crap vw golf mk4 1.9tdi 😂😂😂😂 i'm in love with this car even if it's so old, it's still good
Both engines are bulletproof. I would go for AMG because launch is more of a priority than top speed. Also, a simple engine tune is going to get it to A45s power

0-100 times and quarter miles are just for bragging rights, unless you specifically buy the car for the drag strip. Change my mind. Y'all obsess too much over numbers on parameters you're never going to exploit in real life, and not enough over how a car feels and drives.
In August of 2021, as a fresh high school graduate, when I first saw the emira, I decided I wanted it and I was gonna work harder, get rich, and buy it when it’s officially out. Almost a year from then and everything’s going as planned! I have more than enough to get myself an Emira, not as much to make the purchase justifiable but I guess you can say the car brought me to where I’m at now, and I guess we can make a little exception for that 🤣 Edit: also, where I’m from, the Emira starts at more than twice the price that it starts in the US. Oh well.
It’s interesting how almost every car on sale currently doesn’t seem like good value to me. This lotus on the other hand seems like a bargain!! I would love the opportunity to own one!
Matt "I'm not allowed to directly TELL you the 0-60 according to Lotus but we're going to put a camera on the speedo so you can time it but I'm explaining to give you a heads-up". The hero we need
I get people love manuals but I like paddles. At this price you can drive this car daily and manuals are not fun in traffic Also people are sleeping A LOT on the sound of that Mercedes 4 cylinder. The A45 sounds great First of all, both engines should get a new exhaust. An aftermarket exhaust will make both sound better
frank stephenson fixed the design youtube video. see other videos too. i liked vallahala video but i like v6 concept more than production v8 car in way it looks
This is a great step forward for Lotus. They haven't had a car that competes well against the Cayman and this is reasonably priced. Should help them live a little longer! The car biz is going to get very rough and by 2030 half the brands will be gone.
Gorgeous car! One of my friends has one on order, and I'm getting his handed down Evora GT. Hopefully within a couple of years I will have my own Emira, definitely with the V6 and manual.
Yah know, my hat's off to Lotus. Amazing looking car, rock solid performance number, with an unbelievable price point. This car will be actually USED and USEFUL for the car owners. If I had the cash flow to float around for a sports car, this would be at the top of that list.
Thank you car gods for keeping Lotus going, imagine a ‘cheap’ sports car with a supercharged bulletproof engine *manual* transmission, double wishbone suspension, real exhausts and *real* vents! Thank you! We will sacrifice fake plastic overly complicated modern cars.
Respect to LOTUS for not slapping an oversized iPad, or overdoing it with the gimmicky glass cockpit. They hit the perfect balance for the car enthusiast. I think I'm looking at my next car.
Definitely hope to buy one of these in a few years! Already have a spec in mind once the optional colors become available. I will definitely go for AMG 4 cylinder turbo this time around. With a tune, downpipe, intake and full exhaust, I bet it puts out 450whp or more. I have an Evora GT, and I absolutely love it. It's a 6 speed with the 2GR Toyota in it, and I've done quite a few things to it to make it more canyon-carver focused and go a little faster. I have a few things left to do, but I'm shooting for 450-460WHP and 100-ish lbs lighter than stock. If I didn't have the GT I would definitely go for the Emira with the V6+6MT, but it would be nice to daily a dual-clutch instead of a 6 speed. Plus, I think there is already a huge tuning base for the AMG 4 cylinder, whereas there is not a ton available for the Toyota, and what is tends to be really expensive because it's such a niche thing. Bay Area and LA traffic also pretty much sucks with a stick, especially because 90% of people don't know what a manual car is and don't actually look before they try and dart over.... The Evora is my first Lotus and I'm definitely a huge fan of the brand now. I always wanted a Ferrari 430 Scud/570S/LP560-2/997 GT3 and while I would love to own one of those some day, I would never get rid of my Evora to get one. I genuinely hope this is one of those cars that gets passed down, because I think it is the last of the true Lotus cars. I think the Emira is arguably all the way around a better car, the fit and finish is likely going to be amazing, they'll be a ton more refined and since Lotus is beefing up their dealer network and presence in the US, they'll just be all-around easier cars to own. All that being said, there is something special about the more hand-built feel of the older cars. They feel like refined kit cars, and because of that, they're actually really easy to work on, and almost everything just unbolts from the tub in some way or another.
I'd have the V6 even if it's a bit slower. For me the sound of that screaming V6 would put much more of a smile in my face. Plus of course it's a Toyota.
I am keeping my eye on this. Something kinda bothersome is the 4cyl is quicker. This car looks way quicker than 5.3 seconds as well. I really want this car below 4 secs. Ugh… so pretty.
The Lotus Emira should beat the pants off my old 2006 WRX TR 0-60... Lotus Emira 400 hp and 3,097 lb, 180 mph Top. 06 WRX 3,085 lb, 230 hp, 235ftlb, 0-60 MPH 5.2, 140 mph top on pavement, about 128-130 in the dirt.
youtube frank stepenhsons video , he fixed this lotus aesthetic, also see his other videos like aston vallahala. i liked v6 concept mroe thna v8 production verison appearance
I'd definitely go for 2.0 turbo amg engine especially knowing the potential of that engine there's plenty left to turn it up, I'd ideally like it with a manual but twin clutch is the way forward
This Toyota motor has been tested in stock form to get well over 600hp stock long block with only cam and injector changes. I'll take this for reliability over AMG any freakin day! Add 200hp with head changes , ask any Paris Dakar 2wd buggy racer .

BMW M2 has 390 litre of boot space + the whole backseat area to put our stuffs in. The Corvette C8 has a total of around 350 litre. And like Matt said, the Mustang even has a lot more (502 litre + back seat area).

The V6 with manual for driver involvement and character, the 4 cyl with an ecu re map back up to 420 hp for outright performance 👌 it’s a great looking car and makes the Cayman look like a bit of a suppository

Hi John,
Drove a manual Emira yesterday and shifting action wasn’t as good as expected.
If this car came out in a 1.4 litre engine I’d still buy it in a heartbeat.

Did Matt let one rip 9:23?
I'd have the V6 even if it's a bit slower. For me the sound of that screaming V6 would put much more of a smile in my face. Plus of course it's a Toyota.
I have a 2GR Turbo in my MR2 and it puts out 670whp they are impressive motors!
What an absolutely brilliant car, Lotus is back!
I am keeping my eye on this. Something kinda bothersome is the 4cyl is quicker. This car looks way quicker than 5.3 seconds as well. I really want this car below 4 secs. Ugh… so pretty.
got 5.3 exactly as well!
Hydraulic steering and a manual transmission. Well done Lotus, well done.
That car suits you perfectly!! Not too big , not too small, not too loud, not too soft.
You should by one.!!
For those wondering, the 0-60 is 5.5s based off of this video
Lotus claims that the Emira can do 0-60 in less than 4.6s
That’s very slow
The Lotus Emira should beat the pants off my old 2006 WRX TR 0-60...
Lotus Emira 400 hp and 3,097 lb, 180 mph Top.
06 WRX 3,085 lb, 230 hp, 235ftlb, 0-60 MPH 5.2, 140 mph top on pavement, about 128-130 in the dirt.
@@archielamb7443 still slow for a car like this. My m340 was faster and it would have no chance against my Tesla
slower to 60 and top end than a 20 year old TVR. Meh.
I timed 5.20 and 5.25 still alot slower than claimed
I love Lotus. Real sportcars with no bu*****t marketing and overpriced vehicles.
About 5.1secs 0-62mph/0-100kph and 10.8 secs 0-100mph/0-160kph for the interested.
Diogo, Emira also has 295bhp.
@@purwantiallan5089 Didn't notice but the horsepower would make sense on these times
The 2GR - FE port injection. even without supercharger it has instant torque and very long legs. Bullet proof and cheap to service.
I rather prefer the design of the Lotus over the Ferrari F8 because it’s more elegant than aggressive.
Absolutely ✌️
It looks far more natural, somehow.
How many times are,you going to type the same comment, Nik ko less?
youtube frank stepenhsons video , he fixed this lotus aesthetic, also see his other videos like aston vallahala. i liked v6 concept mroe thna v8 production verison appearance
Toyota: Gives Lotus a V6
Also Toyota: Asks BMW for one for the Supra
Edit: Supra has an inline 6, and Lotus has been using Toyota engines for ages.
The supea has a inline 6 not a v6...
lotuses had been using toyota v6s since ages, this isnt the first one
@@teqqaz8471 he never said v6
been using the v6 engine for over 7 years i used to build the gearboxes at lotus
@@j-masters nice 👌
You started to write and draw every spec on the screen which is really really great but please also start writing them in Europian units as well.
Supercharged V6, Manual, Sport Suspension. Wish the rev limiter was higher but what a machine.
I'd definitely go for 2.0 turbo amg engine especially knowing the potential of that engine there's plenty left to turn it up, I'd ideally like it with a manual but twin clutch is the way forward
There's just something about a nice sounding engine and a manual gearbox that will always be better than driving a soulless electric car.
This Toyota motor has been tested in stock form to get well over 600hp stock long block with only cam and injector changes. I'll take this for reliability over AMG any freakin day! Add 200hp with head changes , ask any Paris Dakar 2wd buggy racer .
Now wake up to the real world...
@@an-dr6eu newb
@@an-dr6eu I was building these in Baghdad when you were still in your dad's bag 🙄
@@ronniejaye1 did they put that motor in the atom Ariel as well?
The only new car I'm excited for!
