  • This is the latest piece for my /_ARK_/ project. The final version can be found on Artstation, here: www.artstation.com/artwork/R9N0y
I’ve recorded the whole process for this image and split it into three sections. This is the first video, “Part I: Composition Ideas and Mood Painting - using Custom Shapes in Photoshop”.
Basically the video focuses on creating a variety of ideas, using Custom Shapes in Photoshop, and results in a very rough mood painting to establish a little bit of atmosphere and colour. All very rough at this stage, but it helps give me a more solid idea of what I want to accomplish. This image is then used as a basis to start 3D modelling in Part II.
The majority of Custom Shapes used here, I created myself. I also used some Sci-Fi shapes created by Long Pham too. His Custom Shapes are incredibly useful and they’re available here: gumroad.com/l/FMupi
The other videos for this series include:
Part II: 3D Modelling and Render - using SketchUp and Keyshot - available here: • ARK City Concept Part ...
Part III: Digital Paint Over - using Photoshop - available here: • ARK City Concept Part ...
I hope some of you find the videos useful :)
    Cheers!

Hello David, since I met your art I became a big fan of yours and your art.
Why a big fan of yours?
Because you're always sharing the process of creating most of your images, and that's wonderful, so you let everyone know how that image was created and enables us to understand the workflow you used for that image. This is called teaching!
Glad you always share your knowledge with all of us. :)
I can only wish you much success!
    Thank you for that.
    Cheers.
    Sorry for my inglish.

Hi David, I have become a big fan of your techniques in just a few days. I have a question, I wanna know how do you manage your custom shapes? Do you usually study for the kind of art piece you wanna make? Do you go around a take picture? So you can convert them into custom shapes and later delete them. I am sorry for such an odd question because I am a big keeper and I hate to remove my custom shapes, always hoping to use them later on.
Also, I am a beginner in digital art.
In the end, I am really thankful to you, for showing us your workflow.
    Have a happy one. :)
