My personal theory/headcanon was that after Roku died & Aang became the Avatar The Fire Nation wanted to speed up the Avatar Cycle to get another Firebending Avatar to help them conquer the planet. So, the Fire Nation used the comet to destroy the Air Temples so the Avatar would be reborn as a Waterbender. Because of this, the Fire Nation started kidnapping Waterbenders like Hama to figure out which of them was the Avatar, but since Aang didn't die the Fire Nation likely realized the Airbending Avatar survived. As a result, the Fire Nation spent decades on conquering the Earth Kingdom where they thought the Avatar was hiding even though he was near the South Pole the entire time.

Didn't Zuko explicitly say in like the first episode that the reason they were at the south pole is because the avatar should have reincarnated in the water tribe. It seems that until Aang showed up they thought they had killed the air nation reincarnation of the avatar.
Granted that may have just been early in ATLAs development before they fleshed things out, since we have the flashback in a few episodes that suggests Zuko at least checked for the potential of the Airbender surviving

A cool little thing I read somewhere was you can really see how each of the gang learns from each other, in turn making them stronger fighters.
Waterbending is all about flow, redirection, and using your enemies energy against them. That’s why Hama is so caught off guard when instead of redirecting the big water attack, Katara stands her ground and puts her hand out to fully stop Hama’s attack. That’s an earthbending technique. Learning from Toph. It’s so amazing to see that even this late in the series they’re still learning and getting better.

As the guru stated, the separation of the four elements is an illusion. Here we see Katara use a earth bending stance to perform a water bending technique when she did that block. Hama knew she was outmatched at that point.
Also, the Avatar is so much more powerful than everyone else because they learn all these different styles. It's not just being able to bend each element, and it's not just being able to use all those past lives to connect to their elements. They see how one blends into the other, and how separation is a myth.

Fun fact: this was aired as a Halloween special.
When Katara exploded the water attack from Hama with her hand, she was using a earthbending stance by standing her ground and facing it head on. This is what essentially makes the Gaang better than an army. Its not just Aang who learns from the 4 nations, each person somewhat influences another person in the group and the result is each member becoming more versatile or in Uncle Irohs words "it helps them become whole". It's very cool 😁😁.
For a one time antagonist, Hama was a pretty fantastic character. As we saw, she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's pretty sad to see honestly, how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them. In a way Hama was basically Jet but worse and to the point of no return.
And despite Hama being locked away again, she still essentially won in the end. She laid out her terms, which was to bring another bloodbender into the world, and she succeeded. That's why Katara cried in the end. She not only fulfilled Hama's twisted wish, but because waterbending is a part of her, this "evil" technique is now a part of her. She was forced to learn a technique that she never wanted to learn and can never unlearn now. To say the least, it's pretty traumatizing. It's also why I've always saw this episode as a loss of innocence, because it's like Katara was tainted because of what she had to do. Such a dark episode!
And bloodbending is only OP for Katara if there's a full moon and she's willing to actually use that technique (seeing as she seems to hate what it represents).
Great reaction 😆😊. Hope u have a wonderful day ahead ☺️.

I appreciate how in ATLA and LOK, the characters' bending styles connect to their personalities.
Toph's Southern Praying Mantis form embodies neutral jing -- listening and waiting and responding quickly and decisively.
Hama's aggressive waterbending with claws and spikes reflects her sinister nature. Before sapping the lillies of their lifeforce, Hama first displays her ice claws, which feels simultaneously cool but it's in direct opposition to Katara's more defensive style focused on redirecting energy, which fits her adaptable spirit. Katara uses force when absolutely necessarily -- even when choosing to finally bloodbend Hama, we can see she does it as a last resort with regret on her face as she immobilizes her opponent.
Seeing how each character fights gives insight into who they are inside. I love how their unique bending expresses deeper aspects of their character and motivations.

    • @HuskerHornet3145
      @HuskerHornet3145 3 місяці тому

Also, Hama’s bloodbending style is actually based off Qinna/Chin Na, which involves directly exploiting a target’s physical structure, including joint locking. If proper discipline and force is used (too much breaks/dislocates bones and too little allows a target to muscle their way out), then the hyperextension of fingers, arms, and other body parts that have joints is an example of Qinna. It causes pain, and it can make a target move or stay still, according to the attacker’s will, in an instinctive attempt to avoid a dislocation of joints. Even pulling an ear (which is made of cartilage instead of bones) can be a basic Qinna technique. Notice how after Hama declares her control over Katara, not only is Katara dragged with her arm straightened, as if Hama was hyperextending her arm *while* pushing and pulling her, but Hama’s hands when dragging Katara are positioned as if she is hyperextending Katara’s arm. Bloodbending is ranged Qinna, and true to the nature of the element of control, it also pushes and pulls the target by exploiting their physical structure’s need for water to survive, and like someone faced with a Qinna fighter, a target who physically cannot disobey the bloodbender, must obey the bloodbender.

It's amazing how a "kids show" can ask so much of its viewers to tread through topics that have a lot of moral ambiguity. Hama has to be stopped. Also, she's not wrong.
I always read Katara's "Stop, please," was more a warning than a plea. She didn't want to have to take Hama down-she wanted Hama to stand down because she generally believes in giving people a chance to redeem themselves.

Hama is really old and the backstory she told started 60 years ago....
If you look at Katara's father, he's clearly not a seventy to eighty year old man...

If given the chance I would’ve pointed it out. Both Zuko and Katara had to struggle to achieve greatness. Zuko couldn’t achieve lightning generation and wasn’t able to come close to Azulas skill of fire bending. The trope is annoying of how we can criticize male characters but god forbid we can’t point out a female’s shortcomings.🙄
