Blood bending is terrifying, but it makes sense how powerful a water bender would be during a full moon
Or without it.... *Cough *
Before this episode, some fans speculated about the possibility of bloodbending, before adding, "But the show would never go there; it's too dark."
But, as turns out, the show really did go there. A very powerful and useful technique, but definitely a dark one as well.
Even to this day I see reactors theorizing about bloodbending and then going "this isn't that kind of show".
🎶Nickelodeon🎶
Fun fact you might not notice, the ship that we see in Hamma's flashback on the fire nation attacking the Southern water tribe is actually the ship where Aang and Katara get caught in the first episode, that one that throw the shot telling Zuko where the Avatar was
Fun fact: at 12:42, Katara uses an Earthbending stance to block Hama's attack. Toph may be Aang's teacher, but it seems like Katara's picked up a thing or two as well!
It also harkens back to Iroh's talk about how studying other bending styles can help enhance yours. It's such a cool moment!
Yeah, and it shows that when you're fighting a close-minded master, (like Hama) using knowledge from masters of the other elements can give you access to the fifth element, the element of surprise!
Also when Azula went to capture Zuko in the season 2 finale, you can see him summoning the fire like a wave. I love when benders learn from other elements to create entirely new techniques and stances.
That’s my go to explanation as to why bending is so much stronger in Legend of Korra. Everyone was able to learn bending from each other which created more powerful benders. In reality, bending is probably more powerful because it would’ve sucked to go back to early ATLA bending😂
It makes the fighting so complex because the entire show were told about how water bending is all about the push and pull using your enemy’s force against them , then katara using that earthbending stance and being headstrong and facing the attack instead of redirecting it. Just such beautiful but subtle world building.
Not just an earthbending stance, but specifically a stance that Toph uses(Toph has a unique style of earthbending, that is different from any other earthbender in the show).
So she specifically learned that stance from watching Toph.
I love how empathetic you guys were for Katara’s grief of learning that skill that she personally wouldn’t like
In case you didnt put 2 and 2 together. The reason they were taking waterbenders prisoners was to locate the avatar. Since they wiped out the air nation, next in the cycle is water.
My theory about the raids on the Water Tribe is that, after wipping out the aibender, and Aang being frozen for a hundred years, the Fire Nation had to assume the new avatar would be a waterbender. That's why there were so forceful capturing them and keeping them alive, so if one of them turned out to be the avatar, he couldn't be reborn as an earthbender. And that's probably why they were so forceful with the Earth Kingdom until recently, because the avatar could be one of them. Thinking about it, it must be tough for the Fire Nation : you're searching for someone you have no idea if he's still alive, or even if the reincarnation cycle isn't broken. Soldiers died because of that quest. Make Zuko's exile even harder if his target could have been in any nation except his own.
But yeah : Avatar showed us hos terrifying waterbending can be, Korra showed us how peaceful the airbender really were. Because if they really wanted to destroy their ennemies...they could have. Long live the Queen.
Great theory
I thought the theory is, the fire nation knew Water benders can blood bend, because of Hama’s escape. They decided to instead of jailing them, they rather terminate them from becoming a problem. Esp southern water tribe area. Since Southern water tribe has more fighters because they teach both genders to fight.
Queenie deserved it.
That's less of a theory and more of just the fact of the matter.
They specifically raided the south, which was not only weaker, but was also the next in line to inherent the Avatar.
This is because Korok was Northern tribe. We know the airbender Avatars cycle through the temples, so its safe to assume it was the same for the separate Earth kingdom states, water tribes, and fire clans(before the fire nation was founded).
Also, Korra was Southern tribe, so we know for certian that the next Avatar was meant to be a waterbender from the Southern tribe.
Also, they were invading the Earth Kingdom before Roku died. They've been going hard on the Earth Kingdom none stop for a century. They were forceful because they wanted to take over the Earth Kingdom. They only cared about the Avatar because he was the only thing that could stop them.
Notice how they gave up on the northern tribe(and stated that they gave up in the past aswell), that's because it was too hard and had no upsides to capturing.
(Theory)
They were separating earthbenders from non-bendeders, which was to better control the population as well as create a controlled group of people to possibly birth the Avatar from. Meaning they were basically going to spawn camp the Avatar. Then, as the fire nation took over the fire nation and grew even more in power, they'd be able to raise the next firebender Avatar to view the fire nation as a great unifying force, that the water tribe savages refuse to work with.
Who knows how they would have handled teaching the Avatar the other elements, but if the Avatar ever connected with their past lives, they'd probably turn on the fire nation real quick. So maybe they'd just spawn camo that one too and the cycle would end there(since there aren't any airbenders).
@@Cole_McGill i like the theory of avatar can be spawn from the southern water tribe based on Korra. That makes alot of sense. Also the theory on raising a fire nation avatar into a brainwashed weapon is kinda dark and scary.
Ah, here we go. This is where Season 3 gets its dark status, and there’s some other instances later on. A fan-favorite episode that I still can’t believe was pulled off when it was aired
As if it wasn’t already dark with Ba Sing Se and the mind control.
You can definitely understand Hama's plight and why she feels the need to do what she did even if you don't agree with her actions (i.e. harming innocents). And yes Bloodbending is a dark but powerful technique. Finally something you may have missed is that when Hama through Katara's already redirected attack back at her she stood her ground like an Earthbender (12:45), much to Hama's shock. Overall a really solid episode of an already solid series.
Eyyy i comment the same thing .. im glad other people are cathching that its so overlooked
The pose that Katara does is actually a pose exclusive to Toph!
You are one of the few reactors who really understood how dark blood bending is. A lot of them would say “that’s so cool” , “I want that” , “why doesn’t she want that power” , etc. But it’s a really dark power.
I read a comment from another reaction that compared it to r*pe and I couldn’t help but agree.
That's odd because I've experienced it the other way around; almost every reactor I've seen, while they might think it cool at first, would also understand the implications of it, and find it really dark.
(SPOILERS FOR LATER IN THE SEASON)
And then that horror would be expounded when Katara uses it in _The Southern Raiders._
Hama states that the key to it all is enforcing your own will over the person/animal. Which is exactly what r*pe is. So yes, r*pe is an apt description. This is also why katara learned it in seconds as opposed to the years that it took Amon and tarlok. She’s been learning unconventional water bending tactics for sometime and learning how to bend water within stuff just a day prior. All that was needed at that point was to enforce her will over something or someone.
@@kirklanyoshinaga8953 I think another thing that contributes to Katara picking it up quickly as well is that it seems implied (to me at least) that the reason why Hama's bloodbending technique is "useless" on Katara is because Katara is actually using bloodbending on herself to gain back control of her body. So she first uses the technique on herself, allowing her to understand how to use the technique without the guilt that would come with using it on another person, before she's forced to use it on Hama to protect Aang and Sokka.
Might've been me because I've made that comparison on reactions before. Literally exerting your will on someone else. Also could be used actually to perform r*pe.
Hama won! She ensured that the skill of bloodbending was passed down to another.
@@arturoherrera4467 Spoilers
@@zephon6745 😔 sorry, I've already erased it
@@arturoherrera4467 No problem.
Hama probably sounds familiar because she's voiced by Tres MacNeille. She's voiced SO many cartoon characters, but I mainly know her as Dot Warner from Animaniacs😊
Wait, WHAT?! I had no idea! That's SO cool how much range she has!
Edit: She's also the current voice for Daisy Duck, and also voiced Charlotte Pickles (Angelica's mom) in _Rugrats._
Also mom from Futurama
Holy crap I'd never realized but now I can hear it!
Many people don't understand why Katara was crying after she did it, but bloodbending must be the ultimate violation of consent, removing one's agency over their own body..
Yes! As some people pointed out it reminds me of the "Imperius Curse" from Harry Potter, showing how inhumane and dark of a power it is.
6:26 if you guys remember that was the same Fire Nation ship that Aang and Katara went to in the very first episode
That fire nation ship that Hana froze is the same one that was seen in the very first episode also when Hana was being taken away the girl that was crying was Gran Gran
12:40 I never thought about this moment until someone pointed it out. Katara uses an earth bending form here standing her ground and directly blocking the water. Hama look so surprised because water bending forms are usually all about re-directing attacks, even master Paku in season 1 only used redirection.
9:40 😂 imagine saying there’s no such thing as spirits in the world of Avatar
Especially since spirits have already appeared in the series.
Ah, yes, the episode that scared the life out of every child at the time… me and my sister included 😂 This episode uses a trope that I absolutely adore-where the villain, even when defeated, still wins. Hama is the character that everyone puts on the same league as Koh and Wan Shi Tang in terms of creepiness, and the actress did _such_ a good job with that voice performance.
Man. Hama gave me the creeps as a kid and still does as an adult. Great ep. Shows how insanely strong bending is and all the different forms of it.
This episode marks an intriguing and darker turn in the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. It also serves as the focal point of a compelling theory raised by viewers. During Hama's era, when the Fire Nation invaded the South, their treatment of waterbenders was initially similar to benders they took from other nations-capture and imprisonment. However, at some point, the Fire Nation's focus shifted, and they became determined to eliminate all waterbenders from the Southern Tribe. It's unclear why this shift occurred, but some speculate that Hama's discovery and use of bloodbending, potentially even leading to the murder of prison guards off-screen, could be a catalyst. This theory suggests that even they became scared because even the most potent Firebender would
be defenseless against bloodbending, offering a plausible explanation for the change in the Fire Nation's approach.
6:28 That's the same frozen Fire Nation ship that Aang and Katara would later go on in the first episode.
6:43 Based on character design, and the betrothal necklace (which was a Northern Waterbribe exclusive custome), that's Katara's Grandmother Kanna.
12:45 about that place.
Waterbending is about to "push" and "pull" but here Katara blocked the water, what is a technique of earthbending. That's why Hama was shocked. She was maybe influenced by Toph.
this is, by far, my personal favorite episode in the series! from the spooky vibes to the history of the fire nation targeting the water tribes after the air temples, to the symbolic cycles of abuse & generational trauma. I'm so glad they really went for it & showed just how dangerous bending can be! Top tier episode!
On this episode you can see that katara is not only a master at waterbending but she's a prodigy on it as well, people keep talking about how good azula is while they forget about how amazing katara actually is. Hama took weeks or months to master blood bending, waiting for every full moon and practicing it on rats, katara by just looking learned and mastered it perfectly, after all she did became a waterbending master in just few days of training with pakku.
Very subtle observation: Katara’s fighting style against Hama is so earth bending. A regular water bender would never have such a strong stance or block water like that.
FINALLY! I finally caught up to you guys watching this series, had to start at the VERY beginning of your reactions but it’s all worth it
Controling muscles, bending and breaking joints beyond their limits (my personal no go in body horror) is just the start of things. You could stop the flow of blood through the brain or heart, effectively making a person die from a heart attack or stroke. You could even make it look like a natural death.
But that's not all, it becomes even more terrifying.
Do you know what happens to "wet" organs like the heart or the bladder, when they get hit by a bullet with high kinetic energy, like rifles or machine guns? They burst, because liquids can't be compressed and the preassure has to go somewhere, so it completely destroys the organ. Imagine what you can do to organs inside a body with blood bending. You could squish your opponents heart with just a thought.
The only limit is the imagination of the user and their mental state. This is easily one of the most terrifying bending abilities imaginable.
I love the connections in here. The obvious one would be the ship that you already saw in the very first episode. But even the woman who looked at hama when she was captured was probably Kataras mom/grandma. You can tell from the facial features. And it's incredible how big Kataras & Sokkas Village once was, before they started capturing the people.
This is why you have to watch Korra. They take bending to new levels, it's amazing!
2:23 It was in fact a halloween special.
You guys are doing a wonderful job you really are I wanted to let you know that this episode just gave me the creeps and I was a little kid because the thought of this being able to happens terrifying to me if it can actually happen in real life actually be terrified it's a good thing it's a cartoon and I love the fact that you guys love all characters like you do even the villains eat some love every once in a while Zuko and iroh they're not really that bad if you ask me to get to know them I just really wanted to tell you I really appreciate you too ❤❤🤗🤗🤗
Hama is one the coolest and op characters. She might even be included in the White or Red Lotus orders.
“Spider Sense” referring to the creepy musical stings that accompanied Hama from the beginning of the episode.
I love how katara surprised Hama by using an earth bending move to stop the water in it's tracks during their fight
If you pay close attention to the bending done by the gaang you can see them all using techniques used by other nations in their bending
Iroh, Sokka, and Toph is a very respectable top 3 👌🏽
If I were Hama, after escaping the prison, I would travel to the Northern Water Tribe to train waterbenders how to bloodbend. Then go to the Fire Nation capital, disguise as a servant, and if there is a full moon I would kill the Fire Lord.
In theory, she could train apprentices in the Northern Tribe. Yakone!
the most terifing thing about blood bending is its also affects the mind of its user
Perfect timing for this episode 🎃
And this is why in the legend of Korra katara and sokka had blood bending made illegal
YESSSS I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG
I cant remember for sure, but im pretty sure one of you said in the very beginning something about bloodbending as a joke. You called it!
This episode originally aired around Halloween, when Nickelodeon took that shit seriously
11:42 the problem is hama is attacking innocent people who just happen to live in the fire nation. none of these people she's attacking were involved in her capture. so no cant really understand someone for intentionally attacking innocent people just cause you want revenge
This episode creeped me out and Blood Beanding creeped me out
katara bloodbended herself to get out of hama bloodbending. ❤
Great reaction! Bloodbending!
The next episode will be focus on Aang. Can't wait for your reaction
2:22 Just in time!
Checkov’s gun.
The human body is 70% water
After rewatching this episode with you, I want to write a fanfic where Hama is just a normal PTSD stricken woman who’s terror of being taken again attracts an evil spirt who is really taking people. Hama wants Katara to know blood bending so she is never left in the same situation she was. But as Katara refuses, the evil spirt takes her over and starts walking her to some kind of portal, but Hama refuses to let another water bender be taken and Blood Bends Katara to pull her back. She fights as hard as she can and eventually gets Katara behind her. However, then the spirt takes Hama herself and walks her to the portal. Katara tries to blood bend Hama to help her but is weaker because she has never done it before. It takes Hama and with the source taken everyone else returns but not Hama.
You saw how water benders fight like use the strength of their enemies against them well when hama launch a strong water blast at kataras instead of dodging it or moving she stood her ground and absolutely block it like a earthbender she learned that off tophs thats why hama was so shocked when she saw that she blocked that you can see it on her face ....
9:45
I swear to god if someone mention more about the earth bending stance katara is using, which I saw already there’s a lot, I’m gonna die from cringe. It’s all over the comments of the episode of every reaction 😂
There are so many obligatory comments for every episode when a new ATLA reactor emerges huh XD It's great for the most part and gives the sense of fandom but gets a little tedious when you see the same comment repeated multiplte times on the same video as if they're ignoring how many times it's already metnioned.
how do you guys decide what to cut and keep while editing
We have an editor so they decide. It also depends on if videos get blocked by copyright so then those sections are edited out until YT let’s it pass
Katara could've learn more if she let granny. It's understandable that granny making revenge from wiping the southern waterbenders.
Hiii
Tbh they probably killed Hama 😢
bad reaction
You guys talk too much
We do and say what we want 👍
