    Such a dark episode... We basically just witnessed a loss of innocence.
    I also agree with Eric! The technique is not necessarily evil but because it's Katara we're talking about here, we can understand why she cried at the end. The way I saw it, Hama won in the end. She laid out her terms and Katara had no choice but to comply. She sacrificed her own personal integrity in order to save Aang and Sokka. She was basically forced to do it and that in itself must be traumatizing for someone like Katara, hence why I'm sure she'll naturally associate this technique as "evil".
    As for Hama, for a one time antagonist, she's a pretty sympathetic character imo. I know she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's sad really, to see how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them.

    It's not as simple as "Just don't use it for evil." (at least with Katara). You're physically controlling another person, & she was in a position where she had to go against her morals in order to save Aang & Sokka. The way she sees it, bloodbending (for any reason) is nothing but evil

  • @miamorecadenza1226
    @miamorecadenza1226 7 років тому +164

    I don't think it was just because she's a bloodbender the reason she was upset, it was also she sent another of her own tribe, another water bender back to fire nation prison where she became so evil in the first place. it was like betraying her own tribe and betraying everything she stood for. friggin awesome episode. one of my favorites.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 7 років тому +92

      Miamore Cadenza Well actually, the main reason Katara was upset and crying at the end was because Hama basically won. Katara was forced to bloodbend. Hama laid out the terms and Katara had no choice but to comply. Although she saved Aang and Sokka with this technique, she had to sacrifice her own personal integrity to do so. This episode was basically a loss of innocence for Katara. The really haunting part is the fact that she can never unlearn this as it'll always be a part of her now.
      Not only that, but considering what kind of person Katara is, to use this technique goes against everything that she stands for. I would think someone who is very compassionate and has a strong sense of morality would feel tainted after being forced to do something like this :\

    This episode- if I recall correctly came out in the month of October, and it creeped the hell out of me when I first watched it.
    *shivers* Possibly one of the darkest Avatar TLA episodes ever, and despite how it creeps me out, it's one of my favorites. Hama's character, and the tragic backstory that lead to her insanity made me feel equal parts sorry for her and scared of her, plus the mere concept of blood bending in general is so unsettling and interesting at the same time. Plus the way they talk about blood bending and controlling a person's body, it kinda sounds like your being possessed by a demon. Which again unsettles me even more.

    Oh man this episode is so amazing and could be considered 1 of the best episodes. I love the development it had for Katara and how like other seasons shows that it's not just people from the Fire nation who can be and do evil. The suspense and creepiness was extremely well done in this episode especially towards the end. I loved seeing what happened to the Southern Water tribe in the past and what turned Hama into well… A monster. It just goes to show what hatred can do to someone. Although it's not surprising after what happened to her. It doesn't make it right but it definitely explains it. The best thing about Blood bending is how if you know the basics about the human body you can guess it exists in the universe of Avatar. I really love all the different ways Hama showed Katara how to use Water bending because they are really clever.
    Seeing 2 master Water benders fighting is honestly still 1 of the best fights arguably in the entire show. The ending as well as Blood bending itself is super dark and chilling. I think even if you used it only for good Blood bending would always be wrong because of how invasive it is. And like you said it must be horrible for someone like Katara or honestly any decent person really. Hama is the 2nd most horrific thing in the show with the Dai- Li being the 3rd. I'm curious about how you'll react to the most horrific thing in the show. The character development for Katara is great because it shows once again how powerful she is and how strong her morality is. This episode also shows what Katara would be like if she was evil. Great reaction as always and I can't wait to see more of your reactions. :-)

    What’s also crazy is that you can technically stop someone’s heart with blood bending and with lightning if you redirect the current out of a persons nerves you could paralyze them or just quickly kill them or brain dead them depending on where you take from. Water and Fire are dope. Thats probably why the are cyclical opposites.

    Since the first time I've seen this episode, I can't help but compare what happened to Katara to a rape.
    Another person has basically forced their way into her, forcing her to do something she would never do and ripping away her innocence.
    Those are bitter tears, because she realizes now that she has a terrible weapon in her that won't go away. Once a secret is known, it cannot be unknown. Once you have such an ability in yourself, though you may despise it with all your heart, you know that some day you could have to use it again to save yourself or the ones you love.

    I think the thing with bloodbending (besides just the kids show aspect) is that Hama isn't trying to kill people/rip their fluids from them. She's specifically trying to control them. I imagine that aspect of it is what requires the full moon and master abilities. She needs to be fully powered so she *doesn't* rip the people apart.

    I never really understood why Kat was so upset at the end of the episode until very recently
    Because WE KNOW her. She is a kind, caring, empathetic person, and for her to have the ability to control someone. Not manipulate,c o n t r o l. To have their very humanity taken away from them. And Kat is only 16, and that would psychologically mess with any person's head let alone a 16 year old girl's (who already helps carry the fate of humanity on her shoulders). So it's not a simple "she'll be fine as long as she never uses it again". This episode was so f-ed, but it still gave us a good insight into Kat's character and how she cares for all people (like the painted lady) and to have the ability to control that person..with their BLOOD, while the person is still conscious, and be as morally upright a person as her. She would be emotionally damaged for a long, long time.
    Old kids TV shows had NO chill, and I'm looking too deep into this..

    I think that if the creators had a bit more lee-way, they would've made it that Katara accidently killed Hama with bloodbending.
    Like, because she wouldn't know exactly how to control it, she'd accidently give Hama a heart attack or something. And with her dying breath... Hama would say those last lines and chuckle. Leaving Katara more suitably terrified at herself and a the sobbing mess we saw at the end. It also would've set up her more murderous side for the Southern Raiders episode.

      Zeany .T Maybe a little, but if you think about the visual of seeing an adult reach inside the body of a young girl and force the girl to act against her will to the point where there are tears streaming down the girl`s face as she begs for it to stop; that is the definition of rape. Granted there was nothing sexual or graphic about the way it was presented, but the show`s creators pulled off rape in a child friendly manner. That is impressive and clearly communicates the message they wanted to convey.

    No Earthbenders cannot mess with the carbon or iron in someone's body. It needs to be close enough to Earth for them to be able to manipulate it

    Hama and Ghazan have the most amazing alternative bending, I still can't decide between earth or water because of them hahahaha. In the last airbender lightning is very good looking, metalbending is badass but bloodbending thats a whole other level its so powerful that feels wrong and the sound the blood makes while its been bending OMG, creepy.

    You just described how a evil airbender in Avatar : Legend of Korra killed the earth king. Suking the air out of someone lungs! It was brutal! Best antagonist in the entire avatar series. You must watch it after.

    i have been thinking this for some times now... as a fire bender you basically able to control heat that is removing heat or transfer heat from one object to another therefore as fire bender you technically able tp boil or freeze water... therefore, it does not make sense for a water bender to be able to freeze water since you only able to bend water and not remove heat...

    Blood Bending to me is like Blood Magic from Dragon Age Series, one of the things you can do to a person is by forcing them to kill for you without resistance from them, and I did that all the time in DA:O xD

    Am I the only one who cracked up when Eric was talking about using blood bending to bend the urine out of someone?
    :
    But yeah, this is a terrifying episode. And it's interesting to see a parallel of Hama in Katara. Both were the last water benders of the southern tribe and both have a form of hatred towards the fire nation. But it's incredible to see Katara resist such a horrifying form of bending, even though it can turn her into one of the most deadly waterbenders of all time

    The question isn't whether you can take the air out of someone's lungs, or whether you can block someone's arteries with the iron in their blood. The question is whether you can manipulate the electric shocks that run through people's brains and control their thoughts :D

    You guys are seeing the bending in the wrong way, it is not easy to control a element that it is not pure, like in the metal bending, toph can only control the earth minerals inside of it, and yes the human body is 70% wather but is part of an organsm that chemically changes all the time, with blood bending she concentrates her strenght in the water present on the blood, plus not everybody in that period of time knew much about human anatomy like today.
