It breaks my heart that she was held back a grade and punished for being shy. Did no one think that her “shyness” might’ve been the result of abuse? That teacher sounded dumb.
Back in the 70's and 80's domestic violence wasn't necessarily against the law. My step dad shot my Mom, followed and stalked her for years. LE always said, we don't get involved in domestic problems. 100's of times this happened. Back in the 70's you didn't interfere with what a man did in his home.
You cannot please a narcissistic parent. Joseph didn't want her in the musical group until he realized she was interested in law. He didn't want her to be happy and independent because it's easier to control someone if their miserable. Narcissistic abuse is deadly.
Joseph is a fascinating study of how so much of what his generation of Black Parents and their approaches to child development were informed and formed by being in such close proximity to Black Peoples' dehumanization collectively.
That's one of the biggest mistakes Joe J. made, was not letting her venture into law. Having a lawyer in a showbiz family would have done them wonders, they would not have been taken advantage by those vulture lawyers in Hollywood. Not sure he thought it through.

Yes. Joe Jackson was evil. I watched documentary on family music group Cowsills ( sang song Raon , Park and other things). Father was their manager. He and Joe Jackson would be buddies. Abused and controlled his children ... messed up kids.
Her abusive father and enabling mother really messed up the beginning of her life and set the tone for the rest. She didn’t even want to be famous, she felt as tho she failed at something she never even wanted. Latoya was shuffling between abusers and I don’t think we truly know how she feels about anything, I think she wants acceptance from her family it doesn’t mean everything she said was false. This woman was right to break ties with them, I wish her the best.
She was absolutely beautiful in her younger years. I just feel really sad whenever I watch any of them. I feel like they were robbed of their childhood, hope they can all heal from the abuse they endured.
Childhood is boring. The Jacksons got to live the good life and excitement of show business early in life rather than endure the boredom of childhood. They weren't robbed of anything.
@@jackjules7552 If you truly feel that way, that you gained nothing of value from your childhood, then you are taking life for granted, not appreciating what you have, as a narcissist. There are so many people would love to have the luxury of experiencing a boring childhood, and be thankful for it!

One of La Toya's teachers held her back because she rarely spoke in class looking over the issue that she's a straight-A student, which was so dumb. Before her father was to just lecture La Toya that she should talk more in class and stood up for her telling her teacher how stupid it was to hold her back, he whops her behind.
She is a very intelligent, and eloquent woman. Sadly, she never reached the celebrity success as her brother Michael, and sister Janet. Childhood trauma scars people FOR LIFE. If you are abused in any way as a child, you spend the rest of your life trying to fix it. It changes a person forever. They were definitely robbed of a 'normal' childhood. And this along with abuse, makes it very difficult to form healthy attachments. And to ever even know who you really are. Just sad. But fame and fortune comes with a huge price tag. You give up so much to be a celebrity. Your privacy, peace of mind, and even your dignity, among many other things.I would;d never, ever want to be famous. I cherish my anonymity and privacy.
I really really like how this is narrated, the music, the pictures, the narrator's sympathetic tone throughout the video. I haven't finished watching but I'm very engaged! ✨️
I grew up under a popular older brother who was talented and in love with the spotlight. The folks gave him the top billing in their lives, leaving me feeling very second class. I know the struggle trying to find your own voice and to earn respect.
Mine was younger, turn around and in 40ies say oh they loved you more, I laughed little than realized he is slow , still jealous over nothing and imagine rage not happiness when they see me or when I call ...it's just funny now
I kinda understand my mother's daughter was a better student than I was in school barely tried and pulled straight A's and B's me on the other hand damn near ever other letter constantly getting outshined by her made me feel lesser than definitely when she went to college
That's the absolute hallmark of an abusive parent: one who cannot give up control and let the child go. Poor LaToya, I hope she's living her best life now.
Poor LaToya was always disrespected. By her family, the media, the music industry, the late night show hosts, the public. She always seemed very sweet and very well meaning and just seemed like she wanted to be loved for her. I grew up thru the 70’s and 80’s, so I watched this all in real time. Really, as far as her musical career went, Michael was such a phenom there was no way anyone was breaking off even a sliver of that for themselves. I haven’t seen anything like it since him. He’s a once in a lifetime talent. Considering the times, and absolutely zero disrespect to LaToya, if she wasn’t a Jackson we wouldn’t be discussing her today. It was the decade of 1 hit wonders and she didn’t really even have that. The Jacksons kept the gossip mags in business back then. There was a feeding frenzy for the family back then. Even beyond Princess Di and Prince Charles. Even beyond anything the Kardashians ever dreamed of achieving! The Jacksons WERE the 1st Family, the Royal Family, all of them and more. If you weren’t there you can’t even conceive of it. Gordon just always looked like the Devil to me. LaToya was the perfect victim for a snake like him after all the abuse she took from everyone around her leading up to meeting him.
Katherine always been a weak gullible mother she's chose Joseph and let him abuse her kids for fame and money like but it's worse wth Joseph. I get that Katherine suffered alot but honestly it infuriates me that she let an abusive husband and the media tearing her family apart .
Abusers like Gordon drive wedges between their spouses and their families in order to gain ultimate control of them. I wish her parents had let her leave, become a lawyer or whatever she wanted to do that was NOT in entertainment. She didn't know how to exist as an independent woman and jumped from one abuser to another.
I see why Prince was in love with La Toya, He went out and found other Women who reminded him of her (the one who got away)…. she had a resemblance to Vanity & Apollonia .
I hadn't known Latoya is the Scapegoat of that family. Janet is definitely a Golden Child: "If the abuse didn't happen to me, then it Didn't Happen." I'm a scapegoat and the Golden Children are That horrendous.
She's not a liar... I've seen her struggle a few times to deny what she knows to be true. Poor LaToya, I think she's had it hard. No surprose she would move on with an abuser tbh
She was scholarly as a young girl. I bet if she was allowed to follow her natural path she would've been much happier and successful. Obviously the entertainment industry wasn't a good fit for her personality and interests.
Yes. She could had been the Jackson's family lawyer. Eventhough Joe had gotten his sons to stardom, he was shortsighted when it became to talents and desires his daughters had outside of music. She showed signs of being academically bright at the age of 6. Instead of slapping Latoya Joe should had verbally slapped the teacher for wanting to hold back a grade a straight A student
@@dondamon4669 yes but what does that have to do with anything. She had a passion to seek out law and could had been the family's attorney. Joe had screwed that up for his selfishness.

Her story is heartbreaking. It seems so many musical duds would have proven that wasn’t her strength and maybe acting would have been better. She was exceptionally beautiful and could modeled. She did so many random things and eventually excelled at very little. Being a Jackson is her saving grace.
@tleemf6923 If LaToya wasn't a sibling in the Jackson Family and riding on the coat tails of Michael and Janet, she wouldn't had been in the public eye at all, and she knows it. The only way for her to be in the spotlight is to be involved in controversial events for the attention.
LaToya had the potential to go the model/actress route and I believe she would have been much more successful. She is not musically inclined and that is fine. I believe Joe lead her astray.
I didn't realise she went through all that! She was controlled by men who didn't actually care about her for most of her life. That's really sad. Remember, women all over the world are going through similar or even worse things and that's why female empowerment is important! I find it interesting that her oldest brothers were even trying to control her, I suppose they were just doing what they had been taught/expected to do. Thank you for this amazing video
Agreed but female empowerment has only caused a society with less fathers and more degenerates. Men go through many various fcked up things. But we don’t speak about it. I’ve worked corrections 98.7 percent of our inmates were born from single mothers. I’m now a cop and see what female empowerment has caused. Both genders just need to work together. Any empowerment of any gender or race causes division.

What brought me tears was one of her interviews when she asked how did his talk with MJ, when she was very sorry to him she said that Michael responded “La Toya you don't have to say anything, I know you and I love you”. That hit me! I mean La Toya was part of the heartache of Michael even ruining his brother's image! Michael forgave her. His dad who beat and bullied him, and MJ forgave him! That's the difference between La Toya & MJ! Michael forgave him. La Toya became rebellious that's why she went even more worst! But I'm happy that they are all reunited!

Poor poor LaToya. Until I watched this documentary, I thoroughly disliked her and thought she was just a jealous sibling causing trouble. Now I see she was controlled by this monster of a husband. If she hadn’t hooked up with him, she would have made it.

Well, Janet said in all in her hit song, "CONTROL". Although she was the baby, she still felt the strong grip of her father. I'm glad this story was told and I always wondered why LaToya was left out of the 2300 Jackson Street video. She certainly was missed.
Growing up Latoya didn’t want to be a singer. Joseph encouraged her to do so. She actually had a fairly successful music career all things considered. Of all the admirers she had and she ended up with Jack Gordon. Latoya seems sensitive like Michael. Abuse affected her greatly
@slimdude2011 define success. When you get money for several albums that's success. Nowhere near MJ levels of course but if you're using that as a yardstick you lack perspective
Didn't she betray Michael by accussing him of the most heinous crime though? If that's true, I don't feel any pity for her. No matter what your childhood or problems are, throwing your own brother under the bus knowing what it would do to him is unforgivable

Janet Jackson didn't have any plastic surgery because, she still has her natural beauty. Janet is only 56 years old. Whoever has said or has written that she had plastic surgery, that's a bold-faced lie and besides, I don't think she will go through those extreme measures to have cosmetic surgery to maintain her looks because, she's not that vain! Her looks may have changed slightly over the years, and that's because she's getting older, like all people do. It's called nature. No one expect Janet Jackson to look like she did when she was in her 20s or 30s. For a 56-year-old woman, Janet Jackson looks great, and she DIDN'T have any plastic surgery. In general, plastic surgery doesn't benefit anybody because, the person is still going to age, whether if they have plastic surgery or not. A person can have all the plastic surgeries in the world, and they're still going to get old and unfortunately pass away. Nobody can't stop nature from taking its course, no matter what you do.
She’s doesn’t have enough of a following for that. If such a project was to ever happen, it would most likely be produced by a black-targeted cable channel, most likely TV One.

I didn’t know how to feel about La Toya at first, I thought she was super weird as hell, but knowing her whole story now, I feel genuinely bad for her.
To hear all of this is insane. I believe she had such a poor self esteem that she allowed herself to continue in the same drama even outside home! I can't comprehend why she didn't ask for some help from her brother Michael move away and go to University as she always wanted. Sad world that we live in.
My heart has always been 💔shattered💔 for this so amazingly talented family. I always loved LaToya as I felt she had so much talent, but was manipulated by those around her. She was never allowed to shine. She had a very creative spirit, but was always kept in a stifling box. 🤟🏼💖🎶
Joseph destroyed them all I could never understand why Katherine didn't get divorced if my husband beat our children it would be the end of the marriage plus a restraining order
Jesus christ.. Sometimes I'm really stunned by how ignorant American people are of history. You have to stop judging situations based upon the current belief system, laws and political climate. The 50/60s were a radically different time especially for us black people and it really stuns me that people don't understand that. Women, even white women, couldn't even get a BANK ACCOUNT separate from their husbands, their husbands could make medical decisions for them, it wasn't even against the law to rape your wife back then and a restraining order? Are you kidding? They didn't even arrest men for domestic violence back then viewing it as a "private issue", they would've laughed her out of the police station if she came in saying her husband was "beating her kids to discipline them" because THAT'S how they believed you disciplined children then. AND Katharine is a black woman ON TOP OF THAT. Segregation didn't even end until 1964!!!! And fyi, since you seem pretty ignorant of history, ending segregation didn't end the racism that was ravaging America, it actually made it worse for several years. It wasn't until well into the 70s it finally calmed down. So do you actually believe a black woman would've called the white police to her home on her black husband? And still be accepted in her neighborhood? Smh, it's pretty sad that you're a full grown adult and who doesn't understand any of this. AND you're a white woman judging the decisions a black women made in a radically different time period that you could never understand.

It’s a crying shame so many if not all of them went on to have surgery. I think the abuse was so deep rooted. The older brothers should have stood up to Joe.
That’s easier said than done. If you’ve ever see the miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream, Papa Joe was a very intimidating and aggressive figure. Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs did such a good job capturing what Papa Joe must have been like. I don’t blame the family for being unable to really stand up to him.
This was fascinating. Very thorough and well done! I'm pretty sure La Toya (and other Jacksons) were sexually abused. It's just something that a woman knows (about other women). I actually feel really sorry for her for the sh!t she's been through. I can see the change in her after she broke free of that nasty husband. Can you imagine only knowing controlling abuse? You can really see the prolonged trauma in her face while she's married to him. And after they split she looks so much healthier in the face (mentally healthier and more radiant). I'm sure that whole family has pretty serious emotional/mental trauma. Not just from the family dynamic, but also the abusive media and tabloids.

Childhood is boring. The Jacksons got to live the good life and excitement of show business early in life rather than endure the boredom of childhood. They weren't robbed of anything.

She is a very intelligent, and eloquent woman. Sadly, she never reached the celebrity success as her brother Michael, and sister Janet. Childhood trauma scars people FOR LIFE.
She was trapped in a pattern of abuse that began with her father. Like her mother she remained with an abusive husband for too long. 😢
It's hard to leave.

Kudos to Latoia Jackson, she deserves to be happy. Hope she is finally living her life! So glad they resolved and got back together before MJ mysterious death. Never let this evil industry break up your family.
I’m so very glad that LaToya was able to free herself from her horrible ex husband and especially mend fences with Michael before his untimely passing. Redemption is so very important! 💗💗💗
Oh please anybody can see from day 1 he wasn't no gd Latoya was always jealous she couldn't attention with her talent she try another way stop bs . Latoya been divorce over 20 years why she didn't are a hit record not no overseas or a good movie
@@terrenceperkins5282oh shut up you’re all over the comments spreading nothing but nonsense and negativity.
@@amanituelle it's a fact .. she a lie can't sing or dance if her name wasn't Jackson u would never her from her
Good documentary; her book really fills in even more gaps in her story.
She is such a beautiful woman without all the heavy makeup she had on in the past.
I think you mean she was a beautiful woman without all of the surgery.
@@misterrightuk Just her NOSE which changed her looks completely. She's aged now that's Not Surgery.
@@TheBrownIsland “Just her NOSE changed” oh so it changed all by itself then did it? Or did she tell a surgeon to change it?
@@misterrightuk I agree. Too much surgery on the nose. Really didn't need it.
Latoya and mike tyson what a great couple they would make😅
I love how the narrator of this occasionally turns into a voice actor 🤣🤣🤣
It really upsets me that they all touched their beautiful faces! This family had NATURAL MELANIN BEAUTY 😩 !!
Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Randy shouldve been in music. Janet should’ve been in music or law. A lot of people don’t know that what Joe did to LaToya’s music career he was slowly doing to Janet too but Janet said no after the first album and found Terry and Jim. LaToya should’ve been in law or modeling. Jackie should’ve been a baseball player. And Rebbie should’ve been left alone.
Joseph didn’t think this plan all the way through.
Omg! Thank you so much for this... I feel like I understand her, so much better now. I was just a kid when all of this happened, but I remember so much of it, and how she was painted out to be.
Being a victim changes a person. Most often, it causes a person to forget who they are themselves, and doing things that they could never had imagined they were capable of. I wish them all many blessings, and undisturbed Peace!❤️❤️❤️
Great story 👏 I'd love to hear more about Rebbie Jackson.
I think hers may be just as unfortunate as Michael's. Being the oldest female among so many siblings, I bet she caught. real hell!! Joe, sexually abused her. I seriously think he sexually abused ALL the weaker siblings, including Michael.
Was not interested in the business, got married and moved on with her life.
None of you know that Joe Jackson sexually abused any of his children and you need to be careful about spreading unsubstantiated allegations. His children were better off than many others and he worked hard for his family.
REBBIE has the best voice amongst the 3 sisters. I just wish she'd give us more than the4 cds she gave us!
Michael gave her opportunities at times in the 1990’s through his record label.
I always thought La Toya Was the best looking and extremely naturally best looking and the only one that truly had a good heart and was a great person
I don’t understand why Joe Jackson had not served a prison sentence for those cruel acts that he bestowed upon his children
Because you have to press charges first to do that and those acts are very intimate and require such a huge burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. It becomes what one person says versus another.
@@RocStarr913 Life is so unfair
It is so interesting that Janet's love of her father and credits to her father are the exact opposite of Latoya😥
Janet Damita Jo
Latoya was seeking attention and unfortunately didn't have the talent that Janet has.
Janet is much younger than Latoya
