I really like the 10x and 10xsg. Even though they are bushing reels, they cast nicely and don’t backlash as much as some other older reels. Thanks for posting this!

I have one of these reels that I bought in 1986. Last spring I challenged myself to take it apart and service. In the end I found the shim washer on my table that fell out of the one you worked on that belonged on the main gear. The schematic I found on line wasn’t very legible so I kinda just guessed on where to put it. Your video helped me know that I replaced it in the correct spot. Thank you 👍🙏👍.

Thanks for this. I followed along and got the whole thing torn down, cleaned up, greased, oiled, rebuilt and casting in less than an hour thanks to you. My model’s slightly different but similar enough for me to get the job done.

Kevin, I’m glad it went well for you on the servicing. That is the goal of Young Martin’s Reels.

I have 2 of these old reels that have have not used in a really long time. This motivated me to super clean and get them ready to fish again. Thanks for the video.

Nice job, Rick! I did a teardown of my Shimano Bantam TX Mag last winter. I was reluctant to take that reel apart as I thought it had a lot of small parts inside that would be easy to lose. It was running so poorly that I felt I had nothing to lose and dove right into the job. I discovered that it had the same dirt problems as your reel so all the parts got a thorough cleaning and lube. It runs great now and I use it regularly.

Glad to here your reel is running smoothly again. I’m sorry to say I didn’t send the knob today. I forgot all about it until just now.
I was happy to clean up the Bantam but I knew it would work great. Heck with all the dirt it was still working pretty well. I think I could have just cleaned the worm gear, wiped the rest off, and put it back together, and it would have worked great.
The one I’m really looking forward to is the Diawa Procaster PM 10S. I can’t ever turn that one, and it’s covered in blue corrosion. I’m suspecting the worm gear is the bind but I’m not sure. The spool release is stuck too. I would have done it next but the interest out there in baitcasters is pretty slim. Spin cast and spinning reels are what you guys really want to see. I’m mostly looking for a good challenge. Of course I say that but when I get a really challenging one, I just want it to be over with. You just can’t make some people happy.
I have some ABU spincast reels on the way that I think you will like. I thought about you when I agreed to repair them. They both have drag problems.

Got a couple of these including the mag brakes later versions.
Just bought one for a working example and cleaned and hyper polished the internals. Left the bushings and loaded it with monofilament and took it for a fish.
Casts beautiful and catches fish still nearly 40 years on.
But it'll pay to get some drainage holes in the side plates to allow water to shed and stop them turning to powder.

Would you happen to know where i can buy the friction washer?

    • @youngmartinsreels5314

You will need to measure it carefully to find out what size it was then you can purchase one from these guys.

Does anyone know where i can find parts for this exact model reel? I need a handle or a knob for one side. A friends puppy chewed it off and it is my best vintage reel. HELP.

Your video helped me with 2 of my older Bantans. I did have a stuck Pawl that WD & O Ring pick didn’t budge . I used a 3” dry wall nail with a fine point. Was able the insert and rotate a good bite. She pulled then. I know this is a older video . I’m glad I found it.

Is it any thing special changing the 2 bearings ?

It’s been a year since I worked on that reel but I seem to recall that the bearings could be changed fairly easy.

It’s the same basically as a 100 SG … Your video saved me on the washer sequence. I hadn’t pulled one apart since the mid to late 1980s. Thanks for your time

I have this exact reel but it doesn’t have any mag breaks any clue to what reel it could be?

That’s interesting. I have two Shimano SSG7000 rear drag saltwater spinning reels that I really like. I’ve tried to find out what SSG stands for but I can’t. With Shimano reels the G usually has something to do with gearing. Sometimes it might mean Graphite. The S sometimes means Standard and other times it mens Shallow. None of those match my big Shimano rear drag SSG7000. I could see how it might fit this Bantam though. Standard and Shallow could fit as well as graphite but I’m guessing. Rick, I’ve decided you are the Steve Irwin of fishing reel service. Just like Steve used to say something like “normally you wouldn’t pick up a rattlesnake by the head but we’re going to do it….” You come to a fishing reels and say,” now normally you would never want to pull this out but we’re going to go ahead and do it…..” LOL (no disrespect to Steve Irwin who I loved!) I’ve watched Dennis do this reel and it appears to be a good solid reel. Good job Rick! - Chris

I’m sorry Chris, I can’t keep all the letters and numbers in my head. It seems each company had their own plan and they were never consistent. The only reason I include them in my videos is that hopefully people can say, “yes, I have that exact model.” Even then I get the occasional, “mine has a washer or shim right here and yours doesn’t.”
Since I can only take apart what I have, if it wasn’t put back together correctly I won’t know that unless it’s real obvious. For example on this reel I suspect the brass shim that was installed under the plastic collar was supposed to be installed on top of the collar instead. My suspicion is that it should go between the drag star knob and the plastic collar to keep the knob from gouging the plastic. However, since I don’t know for sure, I left it the way I found it.
Steve was a pretty cool guy and he was willing to go way beyond where I would go. I don’t think any of my reels are likely to take me out. I might stick a screwdriver driver through my finger but that’s about it.
