Just found this reel in my garage after must be 25-30 years. Wasn't even looking to use it really but after watching your video I think it may see another day on the lake. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks Dennis, this helped me a lot today in repairing a Shimano Bass One Mag B1-RM reel that belongs to a friend. There here was only a single spring in it and it was in the wrong location and on the wrong post. Cleaned, lubed and cut down a spring to make a pair and it works great now. He'll be very happy. Thanks for all your tutorials, they've helped me a lot over the years!!
Thank you for this video, a co worker gave me this reel. It’s been in his garage since he bought it. Needs some maintenance but still has alot of life to it. This will definitely help me restore it 👍🏻
Thanks! Dennis, just wanted to publicly thank you for your help in getting my old Shimano Black Magnum baitcaster back together again! You steered me in the right direction immediately and together we got her working again, Thank you! Jim
hey thanks for the video! i’m working on my dads reel right now just trying to get a better understanding of it. he’s a paramedic first responder and he’s been going through a tough time with work, so fishing is coming back.
Thanks for the note. If you run into any problems, please send me a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will be happy to help him out with the reel - Dennis
Thanks Dennis I appreciate your attention to detail. I was watching this video while repairing my Ryobi mag4. I was having trouble with the anti reverse and you solved my problem. Thanks again
You found one of my favorite reels for ice fishing. The drags are smooth enough to fight an inter loping pike on 2 pound line, and the plastic body isn’t as cold as a metal reel. I have four of them. They also work fine for warm weather fishing.
Hi Dennis, What a great effort and performer !! Especially enjoyed the zoomed in, closer video look. Must admit I reviewed where that handle spacer belonged several times when you were disassembling it. Sure enough it "almost" snagged you on the way out !! Nice recovery... Great minds must think alike ?!?! Let me know if run low on lures. Have fun fishing... Best Wishes, Cons
I have a Shimano Bantam TX Mag which I suspect has pretty much the same innards as the reel you've profiled here. I'm curious to know if the bushings in this reel could be replaced with bearings. I plan to use my reel for dropshotting for bass and would like to make it a little smoother. Nice job on the video, I'm now a subscriber.
Hi dennis i have this same reel i went to service it before the season began and now if my drag is too lose when i reel it neither the spool will spin and worm gear wont move the eye
Something is not right in the reassembly of the drag system of possible how the A/R was reinstalled. You will need to recheck your work against the schematic - Dennis
Dennis, trying to do a full rebuild on this reel. Mine is very slightly different but mostly the same. Im having an issue where the main gear will not turn the worm gear or the worm shaft for the reel. The anti reverse spins fine, but once I put the main gear on, everything locks up. I can move all gears by spinning the spool with my thumb, but when turning the shaft OR main gear with my hand, nothing spins… I’ve disassembled and reassembled it 5 times now to no avail lol. Any ideas?
That's hard to say without seeing the reel. If you haven't gone back to the schematic, now is the time to do that. It could be the a/r to the way things are meshing in the reel. I wish I could give you more to go on, but that's difficult without seeing the reel - Thanks for asking - Dennis
Just bought a used one for $10 that seems to be in great condition except that the mag brakes dial will not move. I've never worked on anything complex, and I know that I would destroy it if I tried to take it apart. Is there some trick I don't know to get it to move?
I think it is probably rusted in place. The steel ring that the magnets connect too and brush against have a habit of rust. You could remove the side plate and try to free it with a rust buster or penetrating oil - Dennis
You can use either. I generally use a light coat of grease, because oil evaporates quicker and I have seen a lot of problems with pinion gears frozen to the spool shaft, so I like to make sure there is sufficient lubrication there to prevent it from happening. You are correct, oil will help casting distance a little more, but I go with the grease trying to avoid the bigger problem - Dennis
Hello, do you know the difference between the Bantam 1000 and the Bantam 1001? I own a 1001 from when I was a kid, I only used it a few times and gave up on bait casting! But I’m interested in trying it out again and plan on starting out with my 1001 to see if bait casting is even for me or not before I go and spend the money on a modern setup. Thank You!
The issue is likely that the drag washers are not holding or the free spool release has not triggered and reset if you are not able to bring the line back in. - Dennis

That is awesome! Glad to hear it has a 2nd Chance! Dennis
@2nd Chance Tackle I woke up this morning and now it seems like the main gear seems to only work half the time do you by chance have any advice?
I love to see these vintage Shimano reels being serviced. Thanks Dennis!
YW Steve. Best wishes - Dennis

They sure do. Glad you enjoyed the video - Dennis
I wanted to see your fish it! Shimano makes great reels. Nice to see this older one is working perfectly after so long.
Yes it is. I am good at the repair videos. Not so good a filming me fishing. There are a lot of folks way better at it than I - Thanks - Dennis
I love the Daiwa reel Dennis serviced for me
Thanks for the shout out Bobby! Best wishes - Dennis

Thanks Cons. I am preparing a shocker - replacing the board! Be well
Great video I hope to see the Un boxing of the package I’ve sent you with the gifts
Coming soon!

In theory, it should. Just be exact with measures when ordering the bearings - Dennis
I am curious if you ever went about changing out those bushings. If so, what did you order, and what were the results?

I was just looking at those on line. Alittle more detail.
You should be able to get a good deal on these. There were a lot made and a lot are still around
Drag does work completely even though star drag is tighten.

Drag does not work completely even though star drag is tighten.
You may need to replace the drag washers if they are worn or broken
What is the drag value of this reel? I have one just like this in full use! Thanks
I am not sure, but my guess would be 8-10 pounds
Question, do you recommend using grease on the spool shaft instead of an oil? Wasn’t sure if an oil would help with casting performance.
You can use either. I generally use a light coat of grease, because oil evaporates quicker and I have seen a lot of problems with pinion gears frozen to the spool shaft, so I like to make sure there is sufficient lubrication there to prevent it from happening. The 1000 is a right hand crank and the 1001 is a left handed crank.
I have that fishing reel in my collection
It's a nice one. I hope you are still fishing with it - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle no sir it's just sitting in my collection maybe one day I'll put some line on it and fish it!
Wat if is no reeling up back the line
The issue is likely that the drag washers are not holding or the free spool release has not triggered and reset if you are not able to bring the line back in. - Dennis
My reel want reel in sounds stripped out
If it sounds like that, it probably needs new gears. No way to tell unless you remove the case and take an inside look
Like this video a lot very helpful .. I sent you at question about this reel to your GMAIL.
Thanks - I think I answered you. If not, please resend - Dennis
I didn’t see your answer , but I think between your video & YoungMartins I got it figured out. Thanks and keep the old Shimano videos coming
