- In this video we disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble a Garcia Mitchell 300 Spinning reel. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone and I find myself in need of reel repair so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

i have a Mitchell 300 that I bought when i was about 12-13 years old. That would be about 1954. It say "Mitchell" on it but doesn't mention "300". It doesn't even have a serial number.
I took it out this week to check it out and it was turning tight. I haven't used it in about 20 years. Using your video I cleaned it up, and it spins freely. I'm looking forward to using it this spring.

You can google that reel. It explains the serial numbers. The no serial numbers are the newer ones( still old) if i read it right they are the ones that some were made in europe and some made in america and there was no rhyme or reason to the serial numbers if they had one. The only ones that are somewhat sensible where the ones made between 46 & 57 where the number was one the body or on the foot of the reel. The foot being the later years of that era. After that it was iffy at best.
Thanks for your efforts. I've acquired some 300's and preparing to rehab these wonderful reels. From the Mitchell Reel Museum and Alan Tani's site, I have the ID, OD, and thicknesses of each of the 4 shims and am researching currently produced equivalents. Also, I am searching for a tutorial explaining each of the shims function and relationship (how-to adjust for smoothness (factor specs)).
Rick, when I was young, the Mitchell 300 was the reel that I and all my friends wanted. I couldn’t afford one so I ended up with a Zebco 202. I don’t know how many 300s were made over the years but it must have been millions. They are such over-engineered reels and certainly not simple in design. Great job on this video Rick. As you know I only have a Mitchell 300A which is a different reel but still made in France. - Chris

Been using Mitchells since I saved my pocket money as a kid and bought a 304 CAP back in the 1950's. I still use Mitchells to this day and have picked up some near new unused ones cheaply online. I see no point in changing now I'm in my 70's. I use 300's and 488's mostly these days. Great channel. subscribed......
Sam, welcome to Young Martin’s Reels. I think I picked up a few of those 304 CAP reels last weekend. I know the 300 quite well by now but I’ve not seen the 488 before. I also picked up a 302 and a 306. Glad to have you with us.
Sam, I’m only a few years behind you and I have 57 Mitchells. I use them surf fishing and even built an all chrome Mitchell 498 entirely from parts. I don’t fish with it as I have 3 other 498s for that. They are awesome reels and far better than most modern reels. My favorite surf reel is a custom 396 PUM saltwater reel with a custom line arm and roller and a 498 handle. It’s a fantastic reel. I don’t own a 300 however but I do have a nice 300A. I have a 300A and it is a fine reel!
Shims are easy enough to make. I sand down brass washers. The rotating head and housing shim is important to get right. It is the first stage because you have to remove the rotating head so many times during fine tuning. It would be a bit annoying putting everything back together only to find there is too much play between the housing and rotating head.

I love 300s and have a couple myself easy to maintain and work on and still stand the test of time how many modern reels will still be going strong in 30 to 40 urs time

If it has a chevron AR dog on the side plate, I doubt it was a half bail model. However the side plate could have been swapped out at some point too, so who knows. I’m pretty sure the chevron AR control is a 60’s reel, well after the half bail models. Nice video, I also like to learn more about these old Mitchell’s and also older Penn spinning reels 🎣 I like fishing with both types
There are so many different versions of so many different reels I no longer attempt to distinguish when, where and by whom. I can’t even begin to keep it all straight. Now I just attempt to make them optional again. I’m glad you like the Mitchell reels. They were my favorite reel for a long time.
@@youngmartinsreels5314 you may be right, too. I’m not trying to sound like a know it all I’ve only been messing with these in recent years. Bought several pretty dirty and beat up examples on eBay and the flea market, been having fun learning about them, cleaning them up and fixing them and also fishing with them. Thanks for sharing your in-depth tear down videos.
You are welcome to add as much knowledge to the comments as you would like. Unfortunately, just because I acquire these old reels, take them apart, and figure out how to put them back together, people tend to think I’m an expert on them. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I usually have to rewatch the videos just to answer people’s questions. Fish On.
@@tango-bravoThe claw bail Mitchell did come with the boomerang shaped anti reverse lever, l have an unused model still in its box with paperwork, approx built in 1952.
After watching this excellent video I took apart and cleaned and lubed my 1960s Mitchell 300 and it worked perfectly . I decided it wasn't lubed well enough and did it again,when I reassembled it and tightened the 3 final screws it wouldn't spin freely! the tighter the screws were tightened the stiffer it became.. Now I'm at my wits end would you have any suggestions? My second 300 was fine when reassembled
It’s easy to leave out one of the shim washers. Make sure you have the one under the pinion gear and the other under the rotor gear. Leaving either one out will cause a mismatch of the gears.
@@youngmartinsreels5314 I had put a shim under the pivot gear. the problem resolved when i removed it. is the rotor gear the one the handle attaches to? Hard to believe a tiny skinny shim can make such a difference. Thank you for responding,much appreciated
The rotor is the part the spool fits down inside. On the bottom of it is a gear that the pinion gear meshes with. On the bottom of that gear is usually a very thin shim washer.

Hi- can you clean/ degrease the components using a water-vinegar bath? If not, what solvent are you usurping to remove all the grease and grime? Thanks!
Craig, I usually spray my parts down with WD40 for cleaning. After that, if the parts feel gritty, I will scrub them with dishwashing soap and rinse throughly with water. I will only use vinegar on my parts if they have rust on them.

How many meters of thread does it collect on the reel, if it is of the following thicknesses of fishing line, for example: from 0.18 mm., 0.20 mm., and 0.23 mm.

Ed, I looked the 505 up the day you first mentioned it to me. It looks like a nice reel. T try here we’re several listed on eBay that day.
Wouldn't a silicon based grease be better than the dirty oil based grease. I put it on the rubber garage door seal so it dosen't freeze to the cement in winter.
I figure they spend a lot of time and effort coming up with fishing reel greases. I’m planning to do a test soon to see how they hold up against salt water. So far, as long as it is a name brand and made for a fishing reel, I’ll use it. For reels, corrosion resistance it just as important as reduced friction. I’m not convinced yet that just because a grease says it’s silicon based that it’s better. I’m looking forward to testing the greases, but I don’t think I’ll get that done until I get back from Kentucky next month.

How much are these worth? The older ones. Between 46-57.
I sold 5 this week for $25 in rough condition. In perfect condition in the box with original paperwork, I see them go for up to $80. I’ve seen them ask $200 on EBay but that’s asking price not getting price.
I have one on a pole i still use. I would trade the whole setup for a medium heavy cat fever fishing pole
