Great analysis, you easily have the most interesting commentary, love hearing the backstory for these games and the photos were a nice touch. Keep being awesome :)
13:07 "The Alekhine is a crap opening anyway!"
Missed you simon!
Very interesting gambit. Claude Bloodgood was actually writing a book on this opening, which he called the Spike Gambit. Unfortunately, he died before the work was finished.
Good to see you back, Simon. Thanks for sharing the photos and stories. I think it's hilarious that you promised the Irish guys at the pub you would play the opening if you had a chance, and then not only did you get the opportunity to play it but your opponent was also prepared for it!! It really was a fascinating game too. Great stuff! Looking forward to your mega 10,000 subscriber video
Cheers Simon. I watched this last night and today, sure enough, my opponent in the Malta Open played nf6. Coming on the back of two losses it seemed like fate so I ventured g4. Gambit accepted and one raging attack later I won. Great fun. Thanks.
yeah, you beat Berthold Karcher:)
Simon, ask Google for the book "Gibbins-Weidenhagen-Gambit" by Rasmus Pape/Niels Joergen Jensen, two danish chessplayer. The book was published by Schachverlag Manfred Maedler (now placed in Dresden) in Duesseldorf 1991. In the mid 80's I published a magazine called "Blackmar-Diemer-Gambit" and other unorthodox openings. I organized a thematic postal tournament to get as much material as possible. At least the Maedler book is based on the best games of that tournament out of more than 700 games with the opening 1.d4 Nf6, 2.g4!?. Please look for a game Barton - Raindle, London Open 1976, with the comments of IM Kottnauer. Thanks for giving this opening a chance. I love it!
According to the lichess opening explorer, d4 Nf6 g4 is called the Bronstein Gambit, and was played in several master games, including Gareev-Shankland in 2015, and Williams-Pert in 2002 :-)
Chess Clown picture is much better than Horror Clown. Interesting gambit!
You are an inspiration and a riot. Thanks for the vids!
Thank you Simon for an excellent video. I look forward to the next one and good luck to you with your work.
Great stuff old chap!
Fun and excitement! Thanks again Simon.
Psychedelic gameplay Simon. Congrats on an impressive YT channel; keep it up!
Great stuff Simon! I really like the gambit!
i like you simon ! you are so closer to my soul !your creative ! your commentery ! and your style of talking !! thanks alot
Very Nice! ♙♘♗♖♕♔♚♛♜♝♞♟
Simon - loved the images, and especially the chess psychedelic. LOL. Oh, and having checked the comments section, surely I'm not the only one who thought this gambit was a reference to South Park?
Great stuff Simon. Love these post-tournament updates (pictures + all!) and game analyses. I followed part of this 'Kilkenny Gambit' game live and was really hoping you'd pull out the W! Anyway, I'm a huge fan of your romantic style of play and I think it definitely created a lot of chances. It's just a shame he was already prepared for this opening.
Don't ask him to pull out his willy, that's scandalous!
interesting gambit ! i liked it !
According to Chesstempo's DB, 1. d4 Nf6 2. g4 is called the Gibbins-Wiedehagen Gambit, though the name 'Kilkenny' is more likely to stick as it's funnier! Surprisingly, White even has a positive performance rating in the DB with this gambit. Worth noting is that 2... h6 is a good way to decline the gambit, though likely a bit worse than accepting it.
I have played in a tournament with Nevednichy, he is quite a player, Nice game tough!
Would love to see you play this in blitz
Chaos on Board! What a game... Cheers
The Return of Grandmaster Simon Williams aka the Ginger GM is most welcome with Fireworks and free drinks!
Congrats on 10000 subscribers!
great show as always buddy!
Great game! I lost in similar fashion against Nevednichy in round one of that tournament, he's a really good tactician
13:47 is actually shirov's gambit in the Philidor hanham rather than the pirc.
Congrats on 10k subs
go cheddleton, no.21 in the tournament....i will toast all gambits tonight with sake", all poets who influence the world with eloquent prose, and beauty and elegance above all in chess, .. fiona's hat rocks...
you give the normal chess players of the world hope.
30:09 I calculated Kb2 - Qa3. Kxa3 - Nd3. That would be such an awesome mate if there was no knight on d7 to interpose and sac back the queen.
GEEZ WHERE IS THE ANIMAL?
madness everywhere
Googling this opening I learned there is something like the Kilkenny attack:
1. e4, Nf6
2. e5, Nd5
3. Nf3, d6
4. Bc4, Nb6?
5. Bxf7+, Kxf7
6. Ng5+ ....
Nice to surprise an opponent in blitz.
Looks to me that you lot are professional drinkers, who do some chess on the side to miraculously fund their alcoholism.
Haha 😂
Cool. Shrantz just discovered this gambit through a bot. So 6 years ahed of your time!
what a game this was 😨
guess who's back
Howel being over 2700 in no-time? He just was! like 2 months ago, then he lost 60 points. Must feel pretty shit!
Great video, do you do chess coaching 1-1?
Why didn t you play Nxc5 at then end, picking up his Bishop and having only 2 points material less. If he is short on time that can make the trick no ?
Oh but he ll take the rook, then you take the bishop
Of course we want to hear random rubbish! This is UA-cam! Lol He's one of the best chess youtubers out there.
7:17 looks like spread legs and a snatch lmao
What are the irish men names? they must have some crazy games
What is the real name of this opening?
drat... I thought some finally made an opening name for a South Park character.
I'm sorry Mr Williams, but this called is the bullfrog or Gibbins gambit. Here's a link to a youtube video from 2011 which covers this opening. ua-cam.com/video/gPYGEGn1J28/v-deo.html
>10k!!
It seems you got tricked into playing this :D
do you love Fiona???
First!!!
10:56 thanks me later
