Well, thank you mister Williams! Really liking the view from white's side also. Btw: I found the black lions defence in capablanca’s “chess fundamentals”, starting with the philidor defence and then evoluating to the black lion 😉 (chapter one, example 18)
Good stuff. In French KIA there is a White Lion line where white has 2 extra tempos compared to Black Lion: 1. e4 e6 2. d3 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. Ngf3 Nc6 5. c3 a5 6. Be2 e5 (J. Emms, Starting Out: KIA). Now Emms does not continue Lion-style but recommends queenside maneuvering. But Lion style play should be very good here.
I played the black lion which i appreciate a lot, however my opponent sacrificed his bishop on f7before i moved h6, then my king recaptured then his knight went to g5 check, Kg8 Ne6, Qe8, Nc7etc etc, and it lead to an interesting, nail biting game that's for sure. It ended in an agreed draw. Enjoy this opening though!
Nice, but holy cow, please show this from Black's side, instead of us looking upside down. I'm seriously trying to learn this. One problem I run into, is White gets his N on h4 and is a pain. I've found to THEN push g6 to keep him from going to f5, a bigger pain. So often I'll move my black N to f8 then g6 to keep the White N from getting there. This is before the Black pushes g and h pawns to start an attack. So now often I get confused which to move first, that roving Black N or the two pawns.
I found the same. whites Nh4 is horrible and basically takes away blacks kingside aspirations. The book by Leo Jansen mentions briefly to play ...g5 early after having played ...h6 of course. This would prevent white's said knight move. However, white can move that knight even one move earlier so that often doesn't work as well. Not exploring this is a serious flaw in the DVD (I have it) and the book. And don't get me even started about whites pawn setup e4-d5-c4. This forces black to engage a center battle because black practically has to move ...Nc5.
Oh, it's the Black LION! After watching Simon play this line in a number of his videos, I was convinced he was saying "Black Line". I did think that was rather a generic name for an opening. D'oh! 😖
Been playing this from both black and white with a long series of wins. I don't fully understand why it is so good. Seems to be because the white bishop and queen do not really look like a threat and the knight maneuver looks too slow. But I keep crushing opponents with it. Also once you get c6 in it is actually quite difficult for white to find a way to attack the king
g4, seems like a very committed move, especially when the white king has castled and black want to open up the king side, one the knight come to f4, the pawn on h3 is weak and feels like black can safely exploit these weakness, this is what I think of this position
The Black Lion and The El Shad are very similar, so which is more effective vs various White options? At what point in the opening do you go into the Lion vs the El Shad?
If you move Black's h pawn, then then roving N, THEN White often jumps his pain in the arse N to the h file, maybe then g6 then the whole thing's off for the attack up the King side.
Would it make sense to play an Old Indian against d4 as a companion to the Philidor? The black structure through move 8 are the same, and the white moves similar, except what piece lands on c4. And if it would, could you use the same black push centered around g5 that you use against e4 as a component of an Old Indian as well?
Ohh, I woud have LOVE, it if you say. : Dont play the "to fast finger move ( or somthing like that ) Qcb2, that is a nice idea and the knight move is winning I thing. Qxb2 is answert with Nc6, wining the rook for a bishop... :-) I like this variation. Study time... :-)
Unfortunately the ChessBase Reader only works on windows. For Mac you can use parallels for example or you can install Windows on a Mac which works as well.
After 5. ..Be7 with can play the devastating 7. Bxf7+ and toen continue with ...Kxf7 8. Ng5+ Kg8 9. Ne6 Qe8 10. Nxc7 Qd8 11. Nxa8 b6 12. Nb5 and So on. Surely not enough compensation for even a draw. Just wondering, must have overheen something...
Exactly,a oppening is fine just in case if white play on this way 😃 Oppening is actualy verry poor white can play with c4 pawn and d5 and f3 taking a space and put knight on f2 via h3 when knight and white have no problems +black white squared bishop is usseles.
Doubledutch 67 I know it's there but this is still fine for the level it's intended. There's many lines with moves that are "okay up to 2000" rating etc.
Wibster you're the one who has no idea. Firstly, It's common knowledge that certain lines will hold up against opponents below certain ratings. You say that Simon overlooked something as a marketing ploy. To try and market an opening? It doesn't make any sense, all of simons content it top notch and he always researches what he's talking about. You sit there with your engine and say the set up is almost always unplayable, that's also untrue. Then you say that you need to learn loads of theory to play an opening, which is something that only beginners think. So clearly your not "above 2000". you have no idea what ur talking about, and you're a patser with a chess engine.
This happens to me. I then go c5... All in all, I have found the Black Lion to be a pile of absolute shit. I might revisit it again, but it is slow, ponderous, and the black bishop is utterly useless most of the game.
Think you need to get an early h6 in or you end up in a Two Knights defence type positions where Blacks's pieces step on each others toes. If you want to see it from a Black perspective here it is: ua-cam.com/video/7j12fhWid3g/v-deo.html
At minute 3:53 sacrifice the bishop on f7! Bxf7+ KxB Ng5+ Kg1 Ne6! Qe8 only move then Nxc7! and white is better!.....any coment? .......greetings from El Paso Tx. USA
if you're not castled yet as i assume you mean at move 6 for white, the queen can counter attack on g2 and its a little bit better for black, so after Nxc7 play Qg6! if Nxh8 Qxg2 white's king is a little stuck in the center and black as very active pieces, and the white night can be trapped in some lines
@@thelight288 AfterQg6! instead taking the rook white plays O-O! so the menace keeps lets see...... Rb8 f4! Nxe4 Ncd5! Bd8 c3! Ndf6 Qb3! and white is better .....any coment?
@@raga48 yeah if im following right i don't really get the ndf6 move, after that Qb3 is around equal, but still white is down a piece, after c3 exd4 looks like a better move as white doesnt have a way to open the f file so its not that dangerous, its not immidiatly winning for black, but the pressure is on white to prove something for the sacrificed bishop

I learn so much good chess from you Simon, thanks..

Really looking forward to the DVD! Thank you
That wasn't a 'black lion', that was a 'ginger lion'... still aggressive, just a different color. ;}
Really good system,i will tried in my games, thank you.

Thanks Simon. I've started playing it. Played it against a GM in a simul. He played d4 first however. Lost in the end of course but did well.
Losing is not doing well.
Against a gm ten moves is playing well

Firstly, only a schmuck calls someone a patzer. 2ndly, the rest of your reply was not read.
Instead of wasting your time and life, get and read a book on manners.
Try playing a sound opening.

nice video
6:23 somebody tell what if white play pawn g4, after that whose side is better (imma not a positional player)
Good question! Maybe that could stop Black's Pawn advance. I hope he answers you
g4, seems like a very committed move, especially when the white king has castled and black want to open up the king side, one the knight come to f4, the pawn on h3 is weak and feels like black can safely exploit these weakness, this is what I think of this position
pls,detail about after c6...Bxf7
Is het possible after 5Bc4 to play h6 to prevent Knight g5?
How about a DVD that works on a regular DVD player and not one that only works on a Windows based computer?
The Black Lion and The El Shad are very similar, so which is more effective vs various White options? At what point in the opening do you go into the Lion vs the El Shad?

Simon, what if instead of NC3 what about white takes over the centre, with f4 taking over the hole centre? e4, d4 f4?
Hey ChessBase, note that there's an extraneous space in your URL that breaks it. (See after the final "/" and before "williams".)
Jim Ratliff how are you verified
Verified with no content how?? xD
17:26 You move your queen to c7 but can't white play knight to g5 and isn't that a problem for black.
Philidorf? :D great variant of a almost timid black defense, much like a colle Zukertort is the "naughtier" cousin of the Colle Koltanowski :)

Question: is owning Chessbase mandatory to be able to use/watch this DVD, or can it be done anyway?
No, the product comes with a ChessBase Reader which also can be downloaded for free here: en.chessbase.com/pages/download
Thank you for your response. Will it work on. Mac also, or would it require something else?
Unfortunately the ChessBase Reader only works on windows. For Mac you can use parallels for example or you can install Windows on a Mac which works as well.

i got the book on black lion but doesnt have in it what nearly 50% of white players play: d5 (after black plays ...e5)
That would be bad for white, just undermine d5 with c6 and black gets the centre, white can't play his c pawn because the knight on c3.
