MASSIVE Old 95,000LB V8 Wheel Loader - How Will it Start & Operate?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- In this video, I went to look at this huge Caterpillar 988B Wheel Loader. When I arrived, there was another complete loader which I also found out will it start and how will it run. I also got to looking at another non complete third Cat 988b machine that looked to be sitting for years as parts only. These machines are a bit big for the owners current use so they are going to be sold and replaced with a smaller cat loader. Thanks for watching.
Bruce and his videos earn a pre-watch auto like from me :)
Thanks very much for that, I am led to believe that this might result in UA-cam helping more people find it and hopefully enjoy it as well, all the best, Bruce
@@bruceinaushello
Bruce, greetings from West Texas. I really enjoy your videos. I am 81 years old, been around equipment my whole life, but I learn a lot from your content. I hope your eyes a still doing well, following your surgery. Have a good day.
Morning Bill, from the other side of the world. Thanks for the nice comment, glad you like them. I’m slowly starting to get back out there, I still haven’t had the second eye done yet but maybe early next year. All the best, Bruce
I wish I could write comments to youtube videos if I'm 81 one day. I'm always amazed that there are people at this age still enjoying the same videos I do.
Not far behind you in age and love Bruce’s work too.
I worked on Detroits in the 70s-80s and I swear I’d buy an old one just to play with if I could handle the *other* screaming, the high-pitched sounds that would follow me clear to the bedroom and wake me up at odd hours to start in again! 😂😂😂😂😂
Clean haircut, fresh blue shirt.....this beast doesn't stand a chance.
Get 'em, Bruce!!
Love from Kentucky, USA.
Thank you, my hairdresser does make regular repeat bookings for me
And greetings from East Texas Bruce. Glad to see you back doing what you do best. Thanks
@@bbrut3332Gday greetings back at you
I’m a 60 year old Cat mechanic and knew these beautiful machines inside out. I love them.
This guy like elder. DIESEL. CREEK😅😅😅
That second kitty cat sure had a rougher life...lol...but 40 some odd years later both are still making their owners money, a true testament to Cat quality, having paid for themselves many times over. Thanks for sharing Bruce!
Some of the best loaders right there, nothing beats that 3408 sound.
I agree, the sound of that V8 turbo singing while grabbing a bucket full is certainly a nice one
They consume so much fuel though! We had one that unloaded log trucks and it was not very efficient compared to our nice Wagner L90
@@defleppard6609 Wasnt fuel back then cheap ?
@@meto5595 the Wagner is older so why not buy something that saves you money. For every 3 times we filled the 988 up the Wagner would only need fueled once
Nice seeing one of these .
I worked as a fitter in a quarry in the uk .
The guy who ran the stone crushing plant went sick so I got sent over to run it for a few hours .
It was a one man operation medium sized CAT shovel .
I broke that nothing major burst pipe .
So we borrowed the machine you have there from quarry over the lane .
No problem it was just big .
Next day boss says there’s a bloke coming to do your driving test .
Oh yes I say . He says yes it will do you good haha
So took my loading shovel test in one like that and passed with honors …….
I didn’t run him over .
Did that “ temp job” for 6. Months enjoyed it too .
I ran a 980 back when you were 988, was new. I enjoyed it. I saw a 992 working a highway land slide and couldn't believe it. They are real monsters. Fun video it's good memories. Thanks Bruce.
Check out a 994, they are about 50% bigger than a 992. 242t or over 500,000lbs with a 19m3 (24cu yd) bucket.
@@utha2665that’s a big machine
@@bruceinaus It's huge, but when you're loading 300+ ton trays, it's necessary. At the site I work, we have 1000 ton shovels and can load 360t in 4 to 5 passes.
When you enter the toe of the pile… go in about 1/8th bucket and lift straight up and don’t curl yet. This squishes weight onto your front tires. Hit your dif lock and downshift if equipped. Then power into the pile while curling slowly and lifting at the same time. Sticky material may require a quick tilt forward and then back to get a full scoop but majority of materials will full load in my initial description. As long as the loader is healthy and functioning properly that is.
Had to empty the kitty litter tray this morning. 95,000LB would have been perfect for the job. Thanks Bruce, your show is excellent.
Afternoon Vincent, maybe a slight overkill lol
I work for a Caterpillar dealer and pre deliver new machines of all types and work on rentals as well. It is extremely fascinating to see a CAT machine this old compared to the new stuff! I have never seen or laid hands on anything this old, but I would imagine its a ton of fun. Awesome video!
Props to the cameraman for climbing inside the engine bay! A tiny space for sure!
Gday Bruce, great episode and I reckon that second machine would look good parked up against Wally😉, cheers mate
I thought the same Matty
"That's the longest dip stick I've ever seen."
Some of the funniest words I never thought I would hear from Mr Bruce. 😅
I ran a 88 a little but an 980F and G a lot and they were smooth rigs. The would heft 10 tons a bucket and the G as well, Thanks,Bruce! Blessings
Morning Lewie, I’m possibly out of my calculation of how much it can take in the bucket
@@bruceinaus I'd say 15 tons. The Kawasaki115 Z-iv would get 18 tons regular of road bond/crusher run. It was about that same machine. It had a QSK Cummins. Around 510 horses I think. The old 980 had a 3406 as well as the big shovel. Bless you, Buddy!
@@lewiemcneely9143thanks Lewie, I’m always happy to be corrected and there’s a lot of knowledgeable blokes (you included) that watch these videos
@@bruceinaus You were right, Mate and some of us spent our lives messing with this stuff and loving it. Like YOU, for instance!
We have a g. 8 buckets would fill a 100t truck.
Its great to see you back Bruce! Thanks for yet another excellent video.
Thank you Bruce for all the Information on that impressive loader and also for a great engine sound! Greetings from Germany and have a nice day!
Hey mate, I'm only new to your channel but im liking the video's . Can't help but notice from a few of the videos you have, including this one, that you must be local to the same area that I'm in without naming names haha. I know where those couple of loaders are parked and always wondered if they ran. I'm only a young fella and drive tippers locally but yeah good on ya mate and keep it up! Can't wait to see whatelse you get upto and who knows, we may even cross pathes one day 👌
True heavy metal for sure! You have entirely way too much fun. Thanks for sharing sir.
Those are great machines! Exactly what you need to load Wally! Hope you are well Bruce, take care and enjoy the content!
Looks like a fun day for you Bruce , You have to enjoy working that big machinery ! Brilliant video as always mate . 🌵
thanks Bruce - this might become my 3 year old grandson's favorite video!
Thank you, few messages have come through that people watch with their children and grandchildren so that’s very humbling
@@bruceinaus dont be humble - be proud that you produce content that is so engaging and has detail that most others lack.
When the 988 had a V8 and a steering wheel 💪

Nice to see you Bruce!
Thanks for coming and having a look
Great video Bruce. Gotta love a V8 Caterpillar engine. You are a font of mechanical knowledge and I find myself learning more with each of your videos.
Cant wait for more of your videos Bruce. Hope you are well Mate.Cheers.
sharp haircut mate! Keep'em coming Bruce, you're an Aussie legend!
Enjoyed the walk around. I bet the prices are not cheap.
375hp and about 42ish ton operating weight, i think the B series was about an 87' 😊
Shes a good ol girl
Awesome, thank you Bruce.
Both done a lot of hard work Bruce, see quite a bit of rust around them, they are a classic loader, done many hours in a 988 myself. If I remember they get a service every 500 hours logged. A 2015 model (988K) for sale out this way with 14,500hrs asking $950,000. The second loader looks like Mine Spec version. Enjoyed that, great video Bruce.
Well done Dave.
@@slepper98 You buy that 988 loader MOTS and I will crew it for you.
I have operated one similar at Devil's Marble in the NT ,working on the road's with Pioneer Asphalt, it was fun until the Boss found out I only had a Learner for Truck, he put me on the lollipop 😂 thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
What a beautiful machine! Thank you for sharing Bruce!
The oil leaks are just a chassis lubrication/anti-corrosion feature.
G,day Bruce from the UK, the CAT 988 has always been a beast and a legendary loading shovel there just an awesome machine, CAT really nailed with this one 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hi Bruce from the other side of the world in England 🏴. I love your videos. So relaxing and educational too. Keep going as long as you're able to. Great content of these big beast machines! Can't wait for the next one

Totally agree with your pinned comment Bruce. Hope you get back to the old TK Bedford, I always have a soft spot for those Pommy trucks.....
Go get em' Bruce up the old thingy me thing ' 😂
Is this is the type of product placement I like!
Gday Bruce. Im happy to see that you’re not wearing a white shirt this time. I only have walk past a machine and I’m covered in grease. Always good to watch your channel, mate 😊
Thank you
Hey Bruce Another great video, thanks.
I used to drive a machine like this as a 8 year old kid, id push the rubbish and wrecked cars back at a big dump in new Zealand, this machine had the wheels with steel triangle shaped teeth and a big blade in front but it broke down alot, people dumping rubbish would double take when they saw a small kid driving it,😂 my dad let me drive it, this was back in the early 80s
Great job, Bruce. Cheers from all the way down in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Fair dinkum,digger! Greetings from Montreal.❤
Amazing Bruce, what a beast.
Great video Bruce!

Them loaders are awesome
Listen to that thing sing 😄awesome job Bruce - cheers from Tassy
The turbo v8 makes a nice note
Good work Bruce. Hugs from sweden
Bruce, well you certainly are getting amongst this big gear, one of these girls would fill Wally up pretty quick and both them look like decent machines. Looks like his has got a decent bone yard down the back there, mate you could spend hours in there foraging around, I’m sure you’d find some hidden gems. Great video as always, good to see you looking so well mate. Take care
That would make a good Bruce looking for snakes video
Thanks Bruce, that sure is a big machine ! i know its small in comparison ....................with others, thanks again , always enjoy watching your channel from NZ
Thanks Blair
@@bruceinaus welcome Bruce
G,day Bruce,, great machine and 1st loader i ever drove was a 988 but it was a mid 70s with early cat paint and cat logo , i was 9 years old at time and learning speed of hydraulic system was hard at age 9 , and i slammed it so hard to the ground it scared me and every body watching me , but i was learning it now😊
Beautiful. Machine
Could probably buy a fairly good car with the price of those tires bro. Great all round video. Safe travels. Ken.
Those old 88's are battle wagons. Ran them for years good machines.
I love those big loaders. With the 3408 it would be a very capable machine.
Great video bruse
So when Bruce pulled that dipstick I thought that he had struck oil😅😂
Looks like 8 yard bucket. Nice loader.
Awesome stuff. Love tractors 👍🍻
Coolest will it start vid on UA-cam
Nice machines for being 40 years old. They look newer than that.
They are rebuilding them constantly
Old Bruce got a hot mic and a cameraman. You better watch out. 😂🎉😊
Right-o. I'm a bit conflicted now. Part of me was hoping there'd be more wrong with it. Bloomin thing fired right up though, no worries...
Hey up Bruce sounds like one for the camera man then youse can play together in the sandpit with Wally, good video mate
It's the same machine that @AndrewCamarata has.
It sounds so good 😍
Bruce coming in hot boys, and he's got a big one on the line. 🔥
Thanks Jack, it actually ended up being 2.5 big ones!
@@bruceinaus Handled with ease! This one hits close to home. My dad was a heavy equipment operator. I probably had a few hundred hours on John Deere 700s loaders and Mitusbishi excavators before high school. Never got to play with the big toys though. 😆
G'day Bruce, I hope everything is well with you.
Hi Bruce Knew the family that ran the machines out of there Yatala yard are McNane contracting still going ? they ran some mighty machines in there day and aslso had a great collection of vintage earthmoving machinery cheers brian
Nice 👍
Thanks Eric
Bruce owned the sand pit in kinda, all the other kids dreamed of having their very own Tonka trucks.
Love to see an upload from ya Bruce. Those dipsticks are ridiculiously long. I feel like the powerplants are a bit underpowered for machines of that size. For modern standards anyway.
Thanks for the ongoing support
375hp those 3408's in the B model if I remember correctly. The B was around quite some time.
Bruce can oprate anything. Id like to have thiw machine to play with.
Well Bruce, I am going with rust bucket number one because it’s bucket is less rusty and more tire tread.
275 b/1150 ka Cummings 17.6 gallons fuel hr,430hp? Michigan loader , nice machine
Nice
Nice big toy there Bruce
I am going to say 5 cubic meter bucket
Doesn’t sound as good as the terrex I use to drive 👍👍
Gday Bruce - Rule number One.....
Hey Bruce Hello From Aurora, Ohio USA It's 80 Degrees F. Here
It's the same wheel loader at my dad workplace in cement factory.
💪👷♂️
What did you do prior to becoming a blog professional? Enjoy the videos, you seem to be able to drive and start anything.
Thank you!
A mighty machine either way Bruce 💪😎reckon some logistics be required to reassemble one of these beasts?🤔
Metro NYC here. Can i come out with kids and play with it😅😅
Good ol' machines, enjoyed working on the Cats, didn't the self leveler work on the bucket on them.
You need to do an old cane harvester
those cats are monsters, probly 5 cube buckets
9:02 that motor sounds tired
She has an exhaust leak, this means the turbo is not producing the correct amount of boost. Probably 20psi. But now down to half that amount producing ¼ less horsepower than when new. With a new manifold gasket she will take massive bucket fulls. She will last much longer than full boost but drink the same amount of fuel. Since she also has a leak on the injector she is using slightly less fuel maybe.
I’ve seen some massive dipsticks in my time, too.
Lol, it is funnier watching it back
I think the owners will regret getting rid of those 988s and having the extra power and capacity to hand when needed.
Got a question, you mention 4 gears, so when at speed do you just go up through the gears with no clutch. Thanks
