- I take a peek at the Nintendo Selects line for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Nintendo Selects are genuinely insanely good. Pretty much all must haves plus the packaging actually looks special instead of like a tumor
Agree to disagree. The big frame around the cover art always looks worse than the top banners. Platinum Hits can be uglier but Nintendo Selects is the second-worse to me.
@@felonyx5123is it better to have an ugly paint splatter right above the Mona Lisa or a slightly larger and more elegant frame on it
The more and more he jokes about him being color blind…the more and more I start to believe it
@@Samaritan16he actually is colour blind
@@felonyx5123people like you are the reason we're still paying $60 for a 2017 game.
As far as re-release packaging goes, I actually really love the look of Nintendo Selects. That gold ribbon coming off the top and the deep velvet red looks so classy, and it looks like the cover art of the game is framed like it's hanging in a museum. Despite being "budget" re-releases it still felt PREMIUM. Wish they brought it back for Switch.
I love the look too I never really got any cus I was normally on top of getting most games I want pretty quickly after launch like typically within a year
I loved the Selects look as well, especially after the players choice yellow banners on the gamecube. The whole selects idea felt like a love letter to players. It was a way for new players to jump into huge games that had already sold well and were widely loved. I do not understand why we don’t have it yet in Nintendo’s most financially explosive time ever. They’re raking in billions between hardware and software sales. How great it would be to get BoTW, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, MK8, and others with that select banner. I might actually go out and buy some of my games again to have it. I’ve been digital only since launch in 2017 so as to share games with my son. Anyways, back to real life lol
I understand that LESS work goes into these than main channel, but it's almost as entertaining. Thanks for the consistent content Scott
I would absolutely argue this channel is on par with the main channel. Here though, the focus is obviously not the bits and edits, but Scott talking about the topic in the title. Not as "fun" but just as entertaining to me.
I like it a lot better. The constant cutaway jokes can be a little annoying and never funny
@@ratvibe Not a take I expected to hear from anyone, I guess I kind of get it but I never in a million years could agree.
If say it’s as entertaining as the main channel but in a different ways. It’s nice to hear Scott’s unfiltered thoughts but also I love the long scripted style and higher effort.
I don't particularly care for the story based scott videos
during the wii and 3ds era, i basically lived off nintendo selects. the fact that i could buy a link between worlds or ocarina of time 3d for £15 or super smash bros brawl or wii sports resort for £20 was a major win as a kid
I think that was the best part about those games. As a kid, if you wanted a game you had to save up A LOT, wait until a holiday, or beg a family member to buy it for you.
Nintendo Selects however, you could afford it on your own and get full price quality games.
It’s a shame they don’t do them anymore, but it does make sense considering how successful the Switch is. There’s no need to milk longevity out of a console that can’t seem to stop selling units.
It's been great to have a couple of these every other week. I almost feel spoiled
It’s because of the trading cards he made
@@mr.stuffdoer8483nah, those are still privated, these are new
Nintendo really needs to bring this back for the switch so 6 year old games like Breath of the Wild and Mario odyssey aren’t still 60 dollars
hopefully
Call it a gut feeling that’s coping really hard, but I feel like if it were to happen, it’d be next year.
not gonna happen. this is dead. unfortunately.
If they going to add Dark Moon on the Switch, they gotta add Nintendo selects to the system
@@sahaprocks7751 No one is buying yoshis craft world in 2023 for $60
I love that Scott always start these videos with some random one liner
Did he say sex?
oh yeah. its nintendo selets time
@@Sunkery_CDDid somebody say Gex?
@@japplebarry5627 I LOVE GEX
I miss Selects, I should not have to pay $59.99 for a new copy of Super Mario Odyssey in 2023.
Think that's bad, the Switch port of DKC Tropical Freeze doesn't have a Nintendo Selects re-release!
The Almighty Nintendo tax. I just stalk Craigslist and OfferUp now for switch games. Prices are ridiculous
@OlimarRocks @@TommyDeonauthsArchives both are great games worth the price anyway.
@@SailorPalutenait'll be a lot more fun if i was getting a big great deal for being late to the party
Probably not gonna happen due to the switch selling amazingly. Those Wii U and 3DS days in particular are dead 😭
I remember Pikmin 2 was oddly priced a bit more in the USA at about $34.99 probably because it wasn't actually a re-release for us with it being a first time
I love Nintendo Selects. If it weren’t for it, I might have never played Mario Galaxy or Super Paper Mario.
Literally the only two wii games I have that are selects
I didn’t pick up many Nintendo Selects copies, but I really appreciate that they put out a version of Animal Crossing New Leaf with the Welcome amiibo update on the cartridge, it’s such a cool little treasure
Odyssey, Splatoon, MK8, and BotW never dropping to $29.99 or less is a tragedy.
Even digital only
Man Nintendo Selects was a really cool idea, hope Nintendo do it again in the future
I would imagine not. because they don't want to underprice the online store
@@hurgcatI mean, they did it on Wii U and dropped the pricing on the eshop to match the new retail price.
@@ZapCannon5
Yeah but Wii U was stillborn and Nintendo was desperately trying to squeeze at least some money out of it
Yellow is my favorite color, so I actually prefer the yellow spine with a black logo. Although the header on the front is definitely too intrusive to the overall design.
The redesigned covers never really bothered me. I much rather just be able to afford the games, also just a great way to find many of the "must own titles"
Nintendo e-shop Selects was a nice idea. Limited Run sort of ran with that idea basing their whole business on creating physical releases of games that were only released in e-shop.
If Scott keeps this up he has to talk about the L button
Or the Wii U again
Still waiting for that hour and thirty minute video of the L button
You could make a video about the N64 L button alone, and how it might be the least used controller button ever made.
😂
The only reason he hasn't is because Scott only takes Ws.
It’s interesting, as a kid I never put together that greatest hits were cheaper rereleases of physical games. I thought it was just a way for them to show off that a game had sold really well.
Nintendo Selects though? Somehow the messaging got through to me that Nintendo Selects equals a $20 game. I don’t think I prefer it to Player’s Choice but it did make what it was a lot clearer to your average child.
Still wish that they made FE: Awakening and Kid Icarus: Uprising part of Nintendo Selects on N3DS, though
These budget rereleases work well when a new console comes out. It gives the hold outs something to play with if they missed out, and provides a more packed lineup for the new console if backwards compatibility is an option.
I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't brought back the Nintendo Selects line (30 bucks price cut) for the Switch yet. Hopefully they do that could boost even more in software sales numbers.
Digital games getting a physical release is what Microsoft did on the 360. I still have a physical copy of symphony of the Night, geometry wars, and feeding frenzy.
I wished they would do this to Nintendo Switch as well. Yoshi's Crafty World and Link's Awakening are games I am kinda interested to play, but i don't want to pay $60 for them. Even if they reduced it to $30 instead of $20, I would go for it.
Secondhand
@@AxeIRadit's hard finding them secondhand at that price too
@@spectacularstarlight8206nah that’s lowkey what they go for just look at your local listings and ebay auctions
I suspect they're not doing Nintendo Selects for Switch games because the next console is planned to be fully backwards compatible, so they could still make a ton more money of older Switch games on the new system.
Honestly this could’ve been a regular Scott episode if he hasn’t already done player choice
Glad we finally got the Nintendo Selects release of this former Card #35 exclusive.
If it makes you feel any better I keep my American and Japanese GameCube games mixed together so not only is there Player's Choice but also boxes of completely different sizes mixed together.
That upsets my OCD. You're a monster 😱
i honestly don’t get the stigma against nintendo selects, it’s how i got mario galaxy for 10 bucks and that’s awesome
(i got it used if i remember correctly)
Nintendo did do some releases of DS Mario games.
They put them out in Red cases instead of the typical gray. I have my copy of Partners in Time this way because I got it late, the red actually compliments the cover art.
I can't remember if they made them cheaper or not, but I want to say they did. It's been so long I can't remember.
They did that for the 3ds, layer copies of mario games had the red case instead
Huh, the non-selects Wii Sports that were bundled with the Wii in Australia were always in regular plastic cases instead of cardboard ones. The gamecube players choice games in Australia also changed the Gamecube black banner to a silver/platinum shade. Must be a PAL/NTSC thing.
We got in a plastic case in the UK too
Nintendo like PAL regions more than NA back then
Scott is the only person who’s game collection has family game night 1-4
Absolutely love the rate at which these videos drop. I do closing work shifts and run the floor machine through my workplace and find this kind of content to be so much fun to listen to. Thanks man!!! 🙌🙌
Finally another video about ruined boxart!
"Putrid"
"Garish"
- Scott using all the adjectives!
the PAL GameCube player's choice boxes are actually pretty cool, with the whole box taking on a silver color aside from the art exclusive to the game itself
yes even the plastic of the case itself
Funny enough, Nintendo Selects is how I managed to get Nintendo Land on my Wii U. My system was the bundle with Smash and Splatoon, so I didn’t have it as a pack-in title. It was also around the time where Nintendo Land was re-released under the Selects branding.
Hearing that a 3DS spinoff of Disney's Frozen once released as a "Nintendo Selects" suddenly makes me wonder if Nintendo _actually_ selected some of these...
The algorithm recommended me Scott's old Player's Choice video, and then this one. And im glad i did
the wii sports re-release made sense for a little kid, I was 5 years old at the time and lost everything including my copy of wii sports that came with my wii
Omg they got Dark Moon, my favorite game of all time? 10/10 line a game, they should make a billboard advertising it
Apparently that release of Wii Sports sold at least one copy, by the looks of it.
Two of my favorite game cases I have are for Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, on the 360. They're "Platinum Family Hits", and because of that, not only does the box art have a silver border, but the cases themselves are gray. It's neat. I wish the other Platinum Hits games I have (GTA 4, Skate 3, Black Ops 1&2) had the gray cases.
its quite funny just watching Scott gesture at his rug lol
It's just a table with a rug on top of it lol
I actually liked the PS3 ones where the cases themselves were red.
Never put so much thought into these rereleases. I just bought the cheapest version I could find back then. Nice video!
I have been listening to specifically Super Paper Mario’s 1-1 music off and on for a few days and started replaying the game last night and today Scott talks about it and plays the track throughout most of the video! What a crazy coincidence! Great video as always Scott!
It honestly made sense for Nintendo to re-release Wii Sports. Considering how popular the Wii was with casuals, especially children, there's a good chance the Wii Sports discs could've been destroyed or gone missing, so now it was easier to get a replacement copy.
Why did Nintendo stop doing this? I wish they kept doing these because some of their switch games are SIX years old, yet still cost 60 dollars, especially some games that never deserved that price tag like Mario Tennis Aces and Arms
Because some people will still pay full price...
Nintendo has realized they have too many fans with the lowest standards in the game industry
Answered your own question.
Yeah, I get that games like Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey keep selling constantly without needing a boost (nevermind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), but there's titles like Arms, Mario Tennis Aces, Splatoon 2 (+DLC), Astral Chain, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi's Crafted World, Link's Awakening and so on that have been succeeded or simply forgotten. Re-releasing them at a lower price point would definitely help boost game sales.
rather arrogant words, Mario Odysseus, and VOTV, Smesh Ultimate are excellent games of high quality, which is why these games sell well@@jesusbarrera6916
"I printed off my own case" for Wii Sports, Scott please never change
When are we gonna get Scott selects ???😢
Cheaper Scott the Woz videos? You mean Scott's Stash?
@@DethInHFILrebrand it to Scott selects.
Scott's Snippets
when talking about the re-released wii sports and nintendoland, Scott forgets these are kids games and kids break discs really easily so releasing a game that you couldn't previously buy in in stores is really smart.
So, with the Wii U, when I got to select the "free" game, I chose Wind Wake HD. And I'm glad I did! I was, like many others, initially turned off by the original. But playing the HD remake, wow! Loved it!
10:50 i remember when pikmin 3 came out in august 2013, i saw a lot of people complain online about how impossible to find physical copies of pikmin 3 were and right after i heard about that, i walked into my local target and saw a few copies left in stock. i should of bought a copy because i did consider picking up pikmin 3 and donkey kong country tropical freeze when that came out in 2013 and 2014 respectively because there were to many software droughts on the wii u and i just wanted an excuse to use it because at the time, it was sitting in a bin in my closet gathering dust
The best thing about the Nintendo Selects in Canada, is the price increase didn't happen until late into the 3DS' life. So, a lot of these Nintendo Selects only saved you 10 dollars. So, you could have already gotten these games at EBGames for the same price by then.
The fact Nintendo hasn't and might not do this for switch is just unacceptable when we have something like splatoon 2 and splatoon 3 BOTH AT 60$
10:23 Nah I'm convinced Scott never left his Wii U era
0:51 N64 and GameBoy had the cleanest- just turning the red to gold/silver to gold on the box. I like having a few Player’s Choice games in my collections!
Buddy is so good at talking with nothing but his hands
Personally I liked that Nintendo re-released WiiSports as a Select because I found that it was surprisingly easy to lose track of the pack-in title due to its stupid little sleeve, so it was a nice saving grace. But, of course, around this time, you would be better off just getting Resort
In at least the UK, early Wii's came with a boxed copy of Wii Sports! Later pack ins would change to the cardboard sleeve as seen here
on the 90's Players Choice were around too, the difference is that the boxes and labels had a golden ribbon , SNES and Game Boy games had it, and SNES games that were released before ESRB are now rated on Player's Choice versions, i have several Player's Choice SNES games
You see, it was the "players choice"
I'm tempted to think that it's possible Nintendo Selects was an idea created for the PAL region, but at the last minute was lent over to the US territory. It could explain some of the weirdness you described 🤔
Also, what did you think of the Player's Choice designs in the PAL region? I was expecting you to talk about it given how much you mentioned the PAL region in this video, but you didn't 😕
yeah im surprised we got a lot more selects than america considering that we usually get shafted by nintendo when it comes to cool stuff like this. i'll always appreciate it though since being able to get some of the wii and 3ds' killer apps for cheap was something i always appreciated as a kid
The fact that selects came out in both 2011 and 2016 just before a new console came out, we can gather there won't be a switch 2 until after switch selects.... unless Nintendo do a Nintendo
well switch 2 well be shown off sometime before April 2025
The wii sports part had me go "huh?" out loud
Nintendo Selects should absolutely come back for the switch this year or next. Imagine doing that plus a new “select” Switch Lite bundle.
if the switch 2 is backwards compatible, a new nintendo selects would do incredibly well
Even when Nintendo does something good, Scott still has something to bitch about. And I love it
I never like the budget line re-releases for any console, but I do have a couple Nintendo Selects: Ocarina of Time 3D and Super Paper Mario. I actually like them more than their originally releases, because the Selects border and ribbon make them feel like storybooks, and the games already felt like storybooks anyway.
WiiSports having a cardboard sleeve as the only Non-Budget release must have only been in North America because both it and Link’s Crossbow Training always had proper Wii cases here in Australia. If you want an official WiiSports game case that isn’t selects, import one from Australia. I don’t know how much it would cost importing from Australia to the States (cos hell, it’s pricey the other way around) but maybe you find it worthwhile
they're region locked
@@timelymirror7826 the cases aren’t. Plus I’m pretty sure Scott has a PAL WiiU anyway
I find it funny that Players Choice and Nintendo Selects have completely different meanings
3:32 hey scott, I'm here! I bought this copy of Wii Sports because my Wii was bundled with New Soup. Take that.
GREAT!
I HAVE TO LIKE THIS VIDEO ALL OVER AGAIN AFTER SCANNING THE QR CODE ON MY SCOTT THE WOZ TRADING CARD!
Was this one of those tcg exclusive videos?
Yes and it says in the description (or if you got the card the video's QR code was on) it was from card 35
I know this is real off topic but just three seconds in gave me an absolute wave of nostalgia. Seeing Dark Cloud in anything just hits hard for me.
Sadly, Scott and the two of us are probably the only ones that are familiar with Dark Cloud
Yeah, i have the Nintendo Selects print of Zelda Twilight Princess. My brother bought it way back in the 2010's.
At least these re-releases are more nicer looking that the piss stains of the GameCube Player's Choice...
The was also the Korean titles for the selects which had the US covers but was called power soccer instead of football even though it was a copy of the US verson 😊
another nice thing that they did for the wii u & 3ds specifically is that games that were part of nintendo selects also got their eshop prices cut to 20 bucks!
17:06 that's interesting, my European copy of Ocarina of Time 3D from Nintendo Selects still has the emblem, i wonder if the emblems were removed in the US versions of Selects or if it was dropped with the later batches of Selects games
With almost everything being digital now , I understand how it would be hard to do this now. To be clear , Nintendo games would sell like bonkers if they dropped prices periodically.
As of right now the only first party games I get are ones I know that I will like. That wouldn't be the case if six year old games weren't sixty dollars.
it would not be hard at all, they managed it with wii u and 3ds titles
I always hated the ps1 greatest hits line, with me it was with Twisted Metal, because the disc was just blank (mirrored) while the “black box” had Sweet Tooth on them.
I realized after watching this, most of my dads gamecube games were Players Choice games, so its weird to think abouy how many games i never would have played if not for the massive price cut. Its a shame this went away and i can only hope they bring it back one day
Another awesome Scott’s stash video love random topics like this
Can confirm, I was someone who did NOT have Wii Sports in 2011. Got the Mario Kart Wii bundle for Christmas that year (grew up with a GameCube), and my mom bought the Nintendo Selects version of Wii Sports to go with it.
Mario Super Sluggers was by far the best Mario sports game imo. Such a shame Nintendo didn’t bring this to the switch.
I think it’s telling that so many GameCube games received Player’s Choice re-releases throughout its generation whereas the Wii only had a few Nintendo Selects towards the end of its lifespan and when it started faltering.
If the Switch ever sees its own line of Nintendo Selects, I wouldn’t expect to see anything until roughly 1 year before Nintendo’s next thing. They simply lack the incentive to do so if the games continue to sell at full price and especially if people are willing to buy a digital version that doesn’t require any physical manufacturing.
Is it weird that i absolutely love the Nintendo Selects box art for all three? it just feels way more important like a celebration for the game.
The 3DS Nintendo Selects were announced like a week after I bought Ocarina of Time 3D for $40. I will never not be mad about that
I paid more and to this day I still haven’t played it 😅.
Super Paper Mario deserves to be in the original box in a collection...the price difference between the two versions isn't crazy.
I wish you showed the disc for these. Was the disc art printed differently? If not, I wonder if there is/was an active after market for just the case sleeve. That way, you could just swap out the sleeve and there would be no difference.
Disc was different, any “shiny” elements were replaced with flat colors
I somehow never knew Wii Sports came in those card sleeves for some till now. My launch UK Wii came with a proper boxed copy.
On the Xbox side of things... the Platinum Hits on the Xbox 360 looked horrendous. But in the end what matters is the game inside!
I know how these videos are really made but I like to imagine him on a carpet floor with his feet kicking up in the air.
A table with carpet?
@@5Detective yeah, so at his old apartment, he had carpet flooring and recorded his videos on that floor but when he moved, he got some similar looking carpet and put it on the table for these videos. He posted on Twitter about it.
Being someone from a PAL reigon, I almost own more selects than normal games, especially for the 3DS. They’re WAY easier to find than the original versions.
I got a Wii wayyy late in the game. It was a black family edition version that came with NSMB Wii and a SMG sound CD, but no Wii Sports. I had to get the Nintendo selects version to play it
Just picked up Luigi’s mansions dark moon brand new for $20 on Amazon. The 3ds consoles are slowly going up in price, so I’m buying up 3ds games while they’re still affordable
I love the card packs! I bought a couple of them and loved the videos, so creative, and still brilliant content!
Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed had a similar release on Xbox with one of those Xbox One style cases. From what I can tell it released with absolutely no fanfare.
I discovered it existed when I saw it one day at a Gamestop. Didn't expect that as someone who loves the hell out of the game
There was a bunch of 360 games reprinted and released in Xbox One cases for several years as a budget line for backwards compatible games.
Haha yeah wouldn't it be crazy if Pikmin 3 cost 60 dollars can you imagine
Holding a Nintendo Selects game makes me feel so special, like wow! I get a cool red border and a ribbon :D
I think in my country they were more expensive because of their fancier look
I actually really like the silver cases the GameCube games got in Europe
I was happy they released Nintendo land as my Wii U didn’t include it, and I think it’s a really fun game.
