the n3ds is most probably my favourite handheld of all time. back when i listened to all the nintendo-covering channels and got the n3ds xl and was EXTREMELY dissatisfied. the xl never felt or looked good to me, so i switched to the n3ds later and then the whole 3ds-generation suddenly clicked with me. enjoying the system itself unlocked so much games and experiences for me, it was a wonderful time for handheld gaming.
An important thing to note about the SD cards not being removable was that Nintendo updated the software of the New model consoles to have wireless data transfer in order to negate even having to take out the SD card.
@@SnakebitSTIoh yeah. if you've ever taken apart a 3ds, there's a tiny little cable that you might notice. when you see it's attached to the wifi chip, you realize it's the tiniest coax you've ever seen. it's hilarious

Instead, you should mod your console. You get an app called FTPD and with a guide from the official wiki, you can access the files wirelessly over FTP, which is a lot safer.
Hacking my New 3ds was easily one of the best decisions I ever made. One reason that the XL doesn’t have faceplates could be confusion. Having faceplates for two very similar looking systems would confuse consumers, so Nintendo only made it compatible with one.
Doubt it they probably didn't want it to have the face plates since it was kinda nique there's a reason the small model and the face plates were only regularly sold in japan
I appreciate to hear your voice while playing Gaur Plains in the background. Definitely New Nintendo 3DS (not-XL) is my fav handheld all time. Good screen size and great portability.
I love the standards N3DS. The screen for the XLs is too large for the low resolution in games, and btw the N3DS screens are themselves larger than the OG size. So it's perfect for me.
I loved the original DS design. It was huge, and I definitely enjoyed the Lite better, but as a ~14 yo kid when I first played the DS, it was awesome AF

Last year i found the new 3ds (non xl) mistakenly labeled as broken/for parts at a used goods store when the only thing wrong with it was a ding on the touch screen. $25. Playing smt iv apocalypse as i watch this video. I will never get that lucky again
I bought a New 3DS XL recently, mostly for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and I LOVE it. The C-nub is nice to have, but it was playable on the old 3DS using the L button to recenter the camera, but having the C-nub is definitely an upgrade, but it's not a game changer. The other advantages though, increased processing power, bigger screen, better colors, faster load times, better form factor, all that makes Monster Hunter a joy to play. It's much smoother and more comfortable to play than on an old 3DS. Love my New XL, worth every penny.
> increased processing power Too bad most games didn't take advantage of that officially. Gotta soft-mod it to get that faster processor speed in most games.
I just pulled out my Happy Home Academy USA New3DS (non-XL) from the Club Nintendo red sleeve and plugged it into the cradle, and promptly began to cry childhood tears
Because of the funky realese date of the new 3ds in NA, 8 year old me had no clue a new 3ds existed. I genuinely thought the new XL was the only one until like 2016
I really wish the New 3DS was still supported, because I was never able to afford one at the time because I was still in school and didn't have a job. And the same time that I got my first job was just a few months after it the 3DS eShop was discontinued
I bought the New 3DS Smash Bros. plates back in like 2015 and I loved them so much-then someone stole my New 3DS. I still miss those plates, but it's tough to justify buying a second pair now that the price has sadly ballooned to over $100.
I remember importing the black model from Japan when even the N3DSXL wasn't in America yet. Still have the box for it too, amazing design imo. Loved the system to death even if I couldn't really use it (I wanted to keep it unhacked and stock).
Something funny in hindsight for myself is that I anticipated Nintendo to rerelease the 3DS with an XL version, like they did for the DS. So I waited and bought my 3DS once the XL came out like I planned and knew all along. However, I never anticipated them to rerelease the 3DS AGAIN but with the c stick and labeled as “new” 😂
I never owned Mario Kart 7 but someone in my 7th grade drama class did and I played the shit out it through download play. I remember a “challenge” I imposed on myself sometimes was to use the motion controls and the 3D at the same time. I don’t think I won any races I did like that but that didn’t stop me from having “fun”
But it is unfortunate not all of them had IPS screens. That would've been a great additional selling point. But no. I've heard only around 10% of them have IPS screens.
I remember when they announced these back then and distinctly remember being pissed that I couldnt get the smaller unit and was forced to get the XL model. I now own a "new" 3DS model, albeit a Japanese import one that I region swapped, but kid me always thought the face plates were cool as hell and i guess that's the reason I picked one up recently cause dammit those face plates are still cool as hell.
I have a Black regular New 3ds I bought refurbished from GameStop back in 2018 and I absolutely love it. I like the faceplates and swap them around frequently, I like how it's just as portable as the regular 3ds but they managed to put in a slightly larger screen, and I feel like how rare the whole revision of the console is here adds to the appeal
I had surprisingly little issues with the 3D effect on the original 3DS while playing Starfox 64 3D, and I used the Gyro controls heavily! Starfox and Ocarina of Time were pretty much the only games where I used the 3D for prolonged amounts of time, and I think it worked amazingly on both those games - even when using Gyro controls!
I love my Switch. Might be the console I’ve put the most hours into in my entire life (and I’m old). Having said that, the 3DS is just a “cooler” handheld. It just has a charm that a slab with buttons on the side could never match.
I think this is the most underrated 3DS model. Everyone rides the XL because it's big but the normal sized new 3DS is more light and portable, easier to carry in your pocket. I've never had any issues of comfort or the screen size, and carrying the new 3DS XL in my pocket would always make my leggings slip down my hips, too heavy
Never got a new 3DS of either size, but had friends back in HS that had XLs and new XLs and boy did games not look good on the XL. The larger screen at the same resolution just emphasized the fact that the 3DS uses a 240p display
@@KyleDavis328 Yeah, I agree. I also don't have much problem with the screen resolution on the XL but the normal one definitely looks better while you're playing 3DS games
I absolutely adore the small New 3DS. The size of both the console and the screens is perfect (the 240p screens really look bad on XL size) and the feel of the plastic is perfect
After my launch 3DS broke, I completely avoided getting any replacement until I could find the regular-size “New” 3DS in black at a reasonable price. I wasn’t interested in any of the bundles, and my local stores just didn’t stock the Black Friday systems. Online listings were too expensive, and I wasn’t a skilled enough technician to fix a broken one. I couldn’t get a new 3DS until 2019… after I completely missed almost everything else the system had to offer at retail.
3DS was one of my favorite games delivery systems ever. I loved having it in a little carry case, with several games in the little case pouches. Such a fun little system !!!
One of my fave handhelds! I have both the original New 3DS (the Happy Home Designer one!) and the XL, and I bought the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu plates plus an Isabelle screen cleaner/stylus to go along with my original. The accessories made it so unique, I was totally part of the market in North America!
I remember here in Australia, we were the first to receive the New 3DS and XL after Japan in November 2014. I was very surprised that happened in the first place
Its my favorite 3ds model i was piss it take that long to get here i finally got it when the Pokemon 20th anniversary bundle came out still have it i even bought pokemon pixel art faceplate they made in japan !!!
Important omission about the 3DS XL was that glossy finish was like a cheap sticker that inevitably peels itself off after enough time/use. I got one on launch and didn't even use it THAT much, but a few years later I noticed the skin was peeling off. I ended up paying too much on eBay for a Black Friday new 3DS for the matte finish, and for the fact that I prefer the smaller size anyway. Those low-res DS screens did not need to be stretched out even bigger.
I loved my 2ds, so comfortable to hold. But upgraded to a new 3ds when Best Buy has a Black Friday deal for them for $100. The smaller one is the way to go. The pixel density of the screen makes it look sharper
I wanted the New 3DS so much. The fact it had substantially larger screens than the OG and was close to the XL without being near as huge and fitting better in the pocket, on top of the faceplates and overall design, I loved it. I was crushed when we didn't get it originally. You bet your ASS I bought that Pokemon Anniversary version! Unfortunately, something got spilled on it and I've been unable to get it repaired at 2nd hand shops (by the time it happened, Nintendo was only repairing 2DS and New 3DS XL sadly). I just love this thing so much. My favorite version of my favorite console.
Watching this video was a huge nostalgia trip for me. I remember getting the white mario edition new 3ds on black friday at target. I remember calling a bunch of different stores we were passing by on the way home from my thanksgiving vacation with my family to find one. And when I finally found a store that had one, I got the very last one they had in stock. I think my old 3ds XL was broken or lost and i hadn't even known there was a new one until the day I got it which i now know is because of the limited NA release. Definitely my favorite 3ds model, I played so much smash4 For Glory on it
Still have the majoras mask faceplates on mine. I'd be lying if I said those specific plates weren't a large part of why I bought this model instead of the XL
I remember being heartbroken when America didn’t the standard New 3DS, right as my playtime on my chunky launch 3DS peaked due to playing Smash Bros every day. Then, when they started doing the bundles, I missed the news because I just wasn’t gaming as much. I didn’t finally get a white n3DS, until last year. It stung paying $200 when I could’ve paid $99 for a Black Friday bundle back in 2016, but this lil guy is my pride and joy
This reminds me of my Zelda edition New 3DS XL. Gold paint Zelda design all over the back and sides. I played that thing so much my sweaty hands ended up disintegrating the some of the bottom and sides of the paint job. Just a weirdly shaped glossy black section on a gold picture now.
I love the normal sized N3DS, its so annoying how the only one I could find in canada was bundled with Happy Home Designer. I bought that and swapped the faceplate for the Smash Bros one from Japan.
My only 3DS Series console is the New 3DS XL, loved it all this time. So glad I got a New version, and I especially appreciate the XL size. (I might've found it hard in future to see on the regular size). Always loved it, still gets used today thanks to modding.
As a person who does digital art on a New 3DS XL, having to unscrew the back cover just to put the SD card into my computer was such a pain in the ass. Luckily, the screws broke off because I've done it so much, but still. And the stylus placement sucks. If the tension piece in it breaks then the stylus just casually falls out which is still an issue with the older DS models, but much more common with the new one's placement.

I just got back from a trip and picked up a New 3DS, with the original packaging, for $110 in great condition. Granted you're going to want to check early in the morning before the really good deals are sold!
There’s some on Etsy that are reasonably priced. 150-300 depending on the vendor and if you want them to mod it prior and get rid of the region lock. I’m not sure if that’s the only thing you were traveling to Japan for but it’d save a lot of money!!!
the n3ds is most probably my favourite handheld of all time. back when i listened to all the nintendo-covering channels and got the n3ds xl and was EXTREMELY dissatisfied. the xl never felt or looked good to me, so i switched to the n3ds later and then the whole 3ds-generation suddenly clicked with me.
enjoying the system itself unlocked so much games and experiences for me, it was a wonderful time for handheld gaming.
@@SnakebitSTI agreed, not saying it was a fix, it was what they thought was a solution.
Also, never ever use it. It uses SMBv1 which is disabled on Windows by default for good reason. Just enabling SMBv1 on a computer is a massive security risk, so you should never *ever* do it.
Instead, you should mod your console. You get an app called FTPD and with a guide from the official wiki, you can access the files wirelessly over FTP, which is a lot safer.
Hacking my New 3ds was easily one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only is it super easy to do as far as homebrew is concerned, but the system has a great modding scene that really made this thing something special. It was practically made to be hacked.
I still play it regularly. Can't recommend enough.

Don't forget to overclock it, that lets you use quite a few 60fps codes
@@M_CFVhow do you do that and is that new 3ds only or regular too

One reason that the XL doesn’t have faceplates could be confusion. Having faceplates for two very similar looking systems would confuse consumers, so Nintendo only made it compatible with one.
Doubt it they probably didn't want it to have the face plates since it was kinda nique there's a reason the small model and the face plates were only regularly sold in japan
@@Raddish-IS-Radd They were also sold regularly here in Europe though

I appreciate to hear your voice while playing Gaur Plains in the background. Definitely New Nintendo 3DS (not-XL) is my fav handheld all time. Good screen size and great portability.
I love the standards N3DS. The screen for the XLs is too large for the low resolution in games, and btw the N3DS screens are themselves larger than the OG size. So it's perfect for me.
I still use mine to this day. Perfectly portable, but not too small, and the faceplates are so cool. If only they weren’t a fortune on eBay
I bought a 3DS XL like 6 months before the new 3DS was released. I still regret it.
I got the Happy Home Designer New 3DS when it first came out and I still have it to this day. It might be my favorite console that I have ever owned.
I loved the original DS design. It was huge, and I definitely enjoyed the Lite better, but as a ~14 yo kid when I first played the DS, it was awesome AF
I love the new 3ds xl. Probably my favorite handheld nintendo ever made. Excellent games library, Not to mention all the great classics games available in the eshop.
The Libray was Good I woulden't say it was Excellen because you got games like mario sports super stars and sonic lost world
@@Super_star_remix Okay, but then again, there's Shin Megami Tensei IV and Devil Survivor Overclocked
It depends on where you look; the way I see it, the 3DS has some good stuff
Kid Icarus Uprising, arguably the best Kirby game, arguably the best Monster Hunter game, Zelda Link Between Worlds, the list goes on. So many good games.
face plates were such a cool idea that i never got to use because i had an XL. they really need to bring those back for like the switch 2 or whatever their switch follow-up is
Last year i found the new 3ds (non xl) mistakenly labeled as broken/for parts at a used goods store when the only thing wrong with it was a ding on the touch screen.
The N3DS also improved textures in MH4U. Digital Foundry even did an entire video on it.
> increased processing power
Too bad most games didn't take advantage of that officially. Gotta soft-mod it to get that faster processor speed in most games.
After the 3DS cover plates, I think a lot of people were anticipating Switch switchable backs
I genuinely thought the new XL was the only one until like 2016
SCARILY well timed as I just got my new 3DS in the mail today, you love to see it
I love the orignal 3DS design! It’s so shiny! I love sparkles!
New 3DS is great too!
I am hoping with the new switch (hopefully still portable), we can get some fun features like a swappable cover or even a street pass
This is present day Nintendo. Do you really think they’re gonna do something fun?
@@Butterscotch_96 i dont know why but i keep having hope lol
ENOUGH! SCOTT, ITS TIME I STAND UP FOR THE ORIGINAL DS. THAT DESIGN WAS CUTE DAMMIT!
Scott really the type of guy to say that interchangeable faceplates are a "reason" to own a New 3DS over a New 3DS XL
That’s why his videos are 3 hours long and that’s why we love them
Hands down the best version of the 3DS!
It would’ve been cool if the back of the new 3ds pen was the screwdriver for the backplate
Regarding the faceplate availability in NA: I believe the Nintendo NY store also stocked a selection of faceplates for a while as well.
I really wish the New 3DS was still supported, because I was never able to afford one at the time because I was still in school and didn't have a job. And the same time that I got my first job was just a few months after it the 3DS eShop was discontinued
sail the seas man. huge homebrew scene
The C stick gets overlooked a lot... I used it all the time in Smash Bros
i think "layer cake of glitter" is officially the most accurate description of the original 3ds i've ever heard.
TIL you can use the back of the New 3DS’s stylus to help pry off the faceplates. Good to know
"There's a little animal nipple now!" That caught me completely off guard and was hilarious
The small "new" 3DS is objectively the best 3DS experience you can get but my favorite is the door stopper 2DS, it's just comfortable man!
But it is unfortunate not all of them had IPS screens. That would've been a great additional selling point.
But no. I've heard only around 10% of them have IPS screens.
@@ThePreciseClimber Yeah odd choice especially with the 3D finally working well. I think my top screen is ips, looks pretty damn good at least.
@@RisingRevengeance If there's a major difference in how washed-out the two of them look at an angle, then yes, one of them is IPS.
I'm pretty sure my cousin used to have yo-kai watch themed plates for his new 3ds XL
Got the black friday new 3ds and it's wonderful thing, got the kirby paper craft plates for the matching theme
The new 3ds is definitely my favorite looking 3ds
This is my favorite 3ds model I got the Black Friday 2016 Mario black model for my 11th birthday and still have it to this day it means a lot to me
I don't believe we got the bundles in Australia but in 2015 I bought the white one and the white mario cover plates
Hurts how much Scott hates the new 2DS so much I love mine
I wear leggings and I'm a man. I'm trying to start a "Bulge" trend.
Can you go into more detail about the leggings?
Im thinking about picking one up now, never tried it, but something telling me that some stuff like mario galaxy should be fun on 3ds
If if the new 3DS can be called the new 3DS despite being old then this video can technically be called “new”.
Yeah why not
I absolutely adore the small New 3DS. The size of both the console and the screens is perfect (the 240p screens really look bad on XL size) and the feel of the plastic is perfect
I’m lucky enough to own a New 3DS and I like it more than the XL
After my launch 3DS broke, I completely avoided getting any replacement until I could find the regular-size “New” 3DS in black at a reasonable price. I wasn’t interested in any of the bundles, and my local stores just didn’t stock the Black Friday systems. Online listings were too expensive, and I wasn’t a skilled enough technician to fix a broken one. I couldn’t get a new 3DS until 2019… after I completely missed almost everything else the system had to offer at retail.
This and the Black Friday edition of this are some of my favorite special editions. I still have the boxes in perfect condition for my collection
I got lucky and got the regular size New 3DS on ebay for a decent price. Glad I did, I always thought 240p looked worse on the XL's larger screen.
It was a great upgrade to my original 2ds so I was happy with mine.
My biggest regret in terms of selling a gaming item was a new 3ds with the smash bros plates
That black friday bundle was a steal
In a perfect world they would do a Switch with the 3D effect
I love the normal sized N3DS, its so annoying how the only one I could find in canada was bundled with Happy Home Designer. I bought that and swapped the faceplate for the Smash Bros one from Japan.
Im glad Scott decided to cover the best 3DS
My only 3DS Series console is the New 3DS XL, loved it all this time. So glad I got a New version, and I especially appreciate the XL size. (I might've found it hard in future to see on the regular size). Always loved it, still gets used today thanks to modding.
More like, the Old 3DS, amiright fellas?
Bar none my favorite system in the whole DS family of systems. It's a shame they're so hard to come by now due to the limited release
Yep, it's a super ds lite.
I went out of my way to get the normal New 3DS when it came out as I specially knew it was gonna be a pain and I'm so glad I did.
oh wow, now I know why it was so difficult to find New 3DS cases (like the clear shells you put around them), because nobody had a New 3DS!!
The (non XL) new 3DS feels so premium, definitely one of the best handheld to hold with my hands imo
I was playing on my friends 2ds (THE ORIGNAL BRICK 2DS) AND THAT LOADED MARIO KART 7 FASTER THAN MY NEW NINTENDO 3DS XL.
I hardly ever see people talk about the NEW 2ds XL, I've got the pokemon one
Who can forget everybody's favorite handheld. Nintendo 2DS Super Mario Maker Edition (w/ Super Mario Maker for 3DS (Pre-Installed))
