Took one minute to get this bass in key with headphones. It was severely detuned and my twenty dollar Korg tuner could not even see it plugged in with a cord. Now that same tuner shows me evenly flat by a semitone across all 4 strings. EADG I would like an octave lower but hey. Very useful thanks
Best way to help learn how to tune by ear is think of one of your favorite songs (or at least a catchy song) and use that songs root note as your reference. For example, 'basketcase' by greenday is D#, and I will never forget how that opening sounds like lol
I always know how to get the E and A string in tune by playing the intro to dance dance by fall out boy and the D string using the intro to psycho by muse

I think the trick is to set up the bass first, then tune it. Tuning may never be spot on even then, but is close when I compare it with my tuner and garageband

Phones don't pick up sub-bass very well with those teeny microphones, they register like 20 different notes each time you play a string.
I used to tune my bass with "Boss" tuner. That went pretty well with my old-school Sony Xperia Z.

did you know that bottom E is the lowest note on a bass vocal range? Try singing it.
make your string really flat e.g 2 turns and gradually turn tuning peg until string is in tune :)
