Holy shit that works
"You should always play with a strap on" - made me genuinely laugh out loud! You are the King, Josh.

Yeah, I had to pause the video I started laughing too hard. Such a cheesy joke, can't believe I have never heard it before.

Ah yes, learning how to play bass with no bass at 2 am
You are not alone
Hi, I am a middle aged Japanese. I just got a bass guitar since I wanted to play it when I was young. It will be one of my big new challenges for coming 2023.
I found your channel now. Although I am not good at English, I enjoy your lesson because your explanation is really organized and logical!
Thank you so much! I will try other videos!
good luck man i just got done learning guitar after 4 months and am trying to learn bass, so you got this man its really fun.
ようこそ!!ベースがとても楽しいです。僕も日本人で、母は大阪からですよ。僕は一年間ベースを弾きています。
You may be middle-aged like you say, but the fact that you’re embracing new ideas is what keeps you young!
I'm turning 31 this year and i just picked up the bass myself, loving it!
Turning 19 and starting bass too, good luck man
You know what ? I just turned 61 and by dint of going to see Marcus Miller in concerts
(who gave me a love of bass) I just bought myself a U5 short scale! It's never too late to start !
Another note that no one tells you when you start.
Keep your finger nails trimmed short. You will also get calluses on your fingers and thumbs. Do not remove these (I know some people who pick them or scrape them away). Do not do that. Calluses are your friend.
Good notes!
I've watched a bunch of "1st bass lesson" videos recently, this is easily the best one I've seen. Clear, simple and playing a real song in less than 18 minutes. It's brilliant.
As a massive Radiohead fan who just bought my first electric bass two days ago, this video meant a lot to me. Thank you :)
Exactly same here ! Was so happy when I heard my first ever song learned would be from my favorite band ever ! Thank you so much
What is the name of the song? I’m trying to look it up to play along
@@DreadieLocks The song's called High and Dry by Radiohead
Same but I haven't bought mine yet!!
I adore Radiohead too!! How’s your journey going ?
Josh's course, "Beginner to Badass" is outstanding - highly recommend!!
Yes! I agree!!
Thanks Peter!
I purchased the course. It is an excellent course. Josh is a great teacher. You can tell He is all in with the bass and enjoy it. I’m having a great time with Josh and my course. I highly recommend it.
What course are you referring to?
I haven’t looked at the entire video yet.
@@MrCednumber1His Bassbuzz beginner to badass course.
I started the course when Covid had us all locked in. Now I can pickup a bass and actually enjoy the sounds it makes for me.
Great, I think I'll be doing the same. Tony S2 👍
I think i will be following you. This was one of the more enjoyable bass lessons
I just turned 45 this year and I’ve always wanted to play the bass since I was in high school. I’ve tried several times to get into the bass but I let life get in the way, now that my kids are grown up and don’t need me so much I feel that this is a great time to really get into learning the bass seriously. Your lessons have been and absolute life line for me, I’ve bounced around other sights for information on scale and other fundamentals but none of them have your approach. I’ve found you lessons are easier to follow and I get more mileage from your lessons. I travel for my job so I’m planning to take my bass with me on the road so while I. Sitting on my ass in the hotel after work that so I’ll be prime time for some great practice sessions. Keep the videos coming, thank you.
Keep it that way dont stop i also want to learn how to play bass but im only 14 years old. I have lots of school work but the music pulls me away. I havent studied music at all and i felt the music a few weeks ago and thouth abt it. If you have any advice on how to get the guitar or what do i do about my school. Also tell me how things are going.
@@makaroncikas3842 I’ve been studying music since I was little, I’m 15 now, and play 3 instruments, and do gigs. School can be a burden, but there’s always time when you have a passion! It’s a lot of time and effort but I will tell you right now, it’s so worth it
how's the playing going Jason? I've always fancied dabbling with bass myself. i'm 38 and learned to play piano during covid. Looking for a new challenge but also some encouragement to take the first steps, I guess.
I'm a Taiwanese. I'm a middle school student. I've been learning bass for two days. This video is a great help to me. Thank you
always felt a void in my life and I love music. i just never had any form of musical talent so I just went on with my life. i am 24 today, and I'm telling myself learning the bass is going to fill that void. so thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos! wish me luck!
Hello my dear friend how are you feeling today ?
Same here but I'm 28. It feels like I'm too old to achieve the skills to express the feelings I want in music but you'll never know if you don't start trying. Props to you for picking it up!
Nursabrina how much have you progressed?
when I was 18 a long time ago I knew this guy who was a jazz guitarist. I had been playing drums for years but found myself listening to bass more and more. He said he could teach me bass. First lesson was at least two hours long. He explained whole steps half steps then he got right into the 7 modes and the different hand positions for each mode because it helped me understand it by playing it. That was lesson one. over the next few months he expanded with arpeggios, pentatonic scales, playing to chord progressions, what ever. If I wanted to learn a song, I had to go figure it out for myself. and I did. I thought were done when he hit me with harmonic minor, melodic minors and the modes, chord structures and everything else within. all by the numbers within 6 months I could play along to jazz. all because he simplified everything and cut out the bs. of course i used to practice 8 hours a day. That helped
i'm past beginner level now, but i'm watching anyway because josh is entertaining
Thanks Kuzon!
Same here
I am well beyond this material but Josh’s videos are still fantastic, they crack me up. A friend recently took up bass, completely new to bass and music, and I recommended the Beginner to Badass course as one option as far as paid beginner courses. This is what he went with, is very pleased with it and his progress so far, and couldn’t say enough good things about it. Recommend for anyone who is just starting out.
Glad your friend is enjoying the course, thanks for the recc!
I'm coming up on my first year of playing Bass. First thing i did was buy Josh's Beginner to Badass online course. Hands down the best thing for my playing.
I've been wanting to learn Bass since I was a teenager, but for one reason or another (lack of money in the early years, excuses in the latter) I never did it.
Today my beginner Bass pack arrived and I've been following this lesson (badly). Will keep practicing and hopefully not neglect Mrs B too much!
As I presume other commenters are stating, I also have purchased Josh’s course. I am about two thirds through the lessons. I cannot say enough about the course, but I am admittedly shocked at how much I have learned about music generally. I’d recommend the course to anyone, and do so anytime the subject arises.
I'm absolutely new to the bass, opened it up today. This guy knows exactly what beginners are going through, literally from opening up the bass, to the knows, to fingerings techniques. You've earned a subscriber. Thank you.
YES!!! 57 (soon to be 58) and just bought a bass, it is time! I am a retired professional drummer from Los Angeles and after 3 lower back surgeries, 7 on each foot, 1 on each thumb and 5 others, playing my e-kit seems more pain than pleasure most days. I have spent 4 decades playing with bass players and have always been attracted to the bass. I naturally hear every bass line no matter the genre and am looking forward to the journey and am VERY blessed to have found this channel!!❤🎉
How's it all going buddy?
"leave some space so the funk can get out" .... that shit is deep man :D
I really don’t know how I was missing out on this channel. I’ve been playing for 8 years now and like to think of myself as a decent bassist, but I’ve never taken *any* lessons. Your videos are showing me that there’s a LOT of basic fundamentals I need to work on, which is a great thing! Your explanation is so thorough, these are incredibly well-made. Thank you for being streamlined, watchable, funny, and not having any of those UA-cam ads!
Sidenote about ads: nobody is gonna get upset if you plug your own product. I’d be more than happy to watch you plug your product in the video for 30 seconds rather than seeing a toilet paper ad or something for 10. I think everyone here is really impressed with your channel and wants you to succeed. We don’t mind the ads!!
hi, i was thinking of buying a bass to learn by myself (since classes can be quite expansive), just wanted to ask for any tips on how you did it without any lessons if its not too much trouble :)
@@astllee14 I'm new to bass but I taught myself guitar without any lessons I'd just say with any instrument research fundamentals and there's tons of free content available to help you get to that intermediate level
I played my grandmother's piano for years, but it's in storage because there's not enough room in my little apartment, not even for the digital piano. My late husband left me his bass (sold off all the others except the acoustic 12-string) and after 7 years, I'm finally going to learn how to play it properly even though I fiddled with it some 30 or so years ago. Yours is the first channel that came up. No need to look further at the moment. Thanks!
Hey Josh! I normally don't comment on videos, but I'm a fan of yours and I can't help myself this time. You've taught me a lot about music in general, and helped me understand the integration of instruments in a band. Looking forward to more videos!
Thank you! :)

How to sound more funky? Muting the strings in between plucks will leave some space where the funk can get out.
Loved it.
I just ordered my first electric bass guitar. It's coming in 2 days and I'm excited. This video is gold in my opinion. I tried to learn six-string guitar about 20 years ago, but gave up. There was youtube back then and I didn't have a computer. I just want to learn bass and hopefully join a band someday. I'm an old man at 46, but this is igniting my fire lol. Thank you man!
I bought a bass a few weeks ago and finally got it professionally setup and decided to give one of your lesson videos a watch. I cannot tell you how long I've been playing High and Dry and I never listen to radiohead! All the resources were there to get into bass and this was the key to open the door of possibilities, thank you!
Wanted to play bass for the longest time and I received one as a Christmas present. Your videos have really helped me learn and stop the bad habits I have picked up when your first learning, especially how to pluck the strings properly and how to mute other strings when you need to. Thank you so much
I've been playing bass for a year and a half, and I had no idea that, even when switched off, keeping an active bass plugged in to the amp could drain the battery. No wonder I'm changing them so often! Thanks.
Haha, yep, should come with a big warning label!
I'm getting old (53) and have injuries to both wrists, but here I am anyway. Overcoming the feeling of hopelessness is difficult but I'll never give up. Thanks for the great intro lesson.
Thank you for teaching me. I literally just bought my first bass today. I have never touched or picked up a bass until about a month ago. It's nice having your channel as an option instead of having to pay 100+ for monthly lessons.
Congrats on your bass!
I really like these lessons. I like that up what we are doing on the screen. I’ve got dyspraxia so I find coordination so hard but you’ve basically improved my playing already and I’ve been trying for a year 😅! I tend to watch the videos a few times to really get it settled in my head. Wish I would afford the course but these free lessons are brilliant.
Glad this is helpful Lottie, that's awesome you're working through the coordination challenges! Bass on.
Hello my dear friend how are you feeling today ?
I bought myself a bass 12 months ago and noodled around with some online bass lessons which I wasn't overly impressed by. I stumbled across BassBuzz and these videos are in a different class! All my questions answered in this one vid and now I can finally get going. Awesome man!
Josh, you've made a dream come true. My bass came today, and I've been following along. Thank you!
wake up babe new bass buzz video
Thanks for this, you're a natural teacher! It was very no nonsense and speaking as an absolute beginner (I literally just started this week) was very easy to follow, all the way through to the end.
Glad it was helpful!
just got me first base and loved how simple and patient you made it out to be a god send for sure
Hey there, I just bought my first bass four days ago and being able to play along to radiohead without my hands cramping up after watching your video made my week! Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to binge watching the rest of your content!
Congrats on your bass!
Always amazing editing and superb teaching. Thank you 😊

Wow! Thank you for this! My first time playing bass and I feel like a proper musician! Your teaching style is AWESOME!!
Outstanding! These really are the best things to learn when you get a bass. Great job putting it together in a short and to-the-point video.

Hello my dear friend how are you feeling today?
First time holding a bass, and I'm already feeling like I've played for years. helpful af, love it
We need more beginner lessons like this, actually starting from the “beginning”. Great work!!
The share the load bit was amazing, I use all 5 digits on my right hand (I relearned how to play with all my fingers after I broke both my wrists at the same time in middle school and then improved it learning from a classical guitar masterclass at a teachers convention in Florida in College)
This is an old video however...I PLAYED A SONG!
Josh, if only you knew what your videos mean to me. You are helping me find myself and acquire a hobby for myself that is truly healing. Once I save enough, I will be buying your course. Thank you!
About a year ago, my grandpa got me my first bass setup, a dean edge 5 string and a small Peavey bass amp. I ended up stumbling across this video, and I am so happy I did. I may not have gotten as far as I have without it, thanks Josh!
Thank you Josh, EXCELLENT video!!!
Thank you!
Hey Josh! Nice to see what you look like in 2021, about halfway through your course :P I hope you're doing well and thanks for being an incredible teacher!
Thanks, glad you're enjoying the course!
Thanks man! Just got a bass, toyed around with it for a while, and then came straight here for my very, very, very first bass lesson.
Can't wait for my pinky to stop feeling sore so I can play more.
Been playing guitar for 20 years and decided to finally start playing bass. The tip about bringing the plucking fingers back to the next string or thumb helped me tremendously.

Now I understand, you are now uploading videos once a month... that's okay, I really like your videos because I'm also learning to play bass, thank you🙏😇🤩
Thanks Vavuna! Yeah, something like that lately. I know a month of the internet seems like a looooooong time :)
I recently got in beginner Jazz Band on bass and these lessons have been lifesavers- Thanks a LOT, Josh! :)
this is genuinely so helpful there’s so much basic stuff i skipped over that’s so crucial
Three-fourths through "Beginner to Badass" and ecstatic with my progress--couldn't fret a note without buzzing or pluck across strings properly when I began.
Glad you're enjoying the course Kevin!
This is so helpful to hear!
Thank you, I watch this with sub and happy:)
WOW!!! LOVE IT!!! You mentioned at the end there is a vid for the entire play along song, please share it!! Second day "playing" and I am having a blast! Thank you!!
I’ve been scrolling through several different channels that offer bass lessons for the year. I’ve been looking for a channel that has a well rounded bass lesson course that doesn’t piss me off and gives me the most bang for the buck. I can safely say that you channel has really been the go to game changing bass lesson site for me. I’m 45 and I’ve been wanting to learn the bass since I was a teenager. Im a major fan of guy like Steve Harris, Lemmy Kilmister, Geddy Lee and so on. Your courses have helped me progress faster and in a more entertaining way than any of the other sites on line. Thank you for the lessons and I hope you continue making them. For those of us out here trying to make since of all of the music theory and ready to hit someone with the bass your site helps brings me back to reality and just keep practicing. Keep rocking into the new year.

Fun fact - I *knew* I was gonna use that Lord of the Rings clip way before I’d planned most of the lesson. We wantsed it, precious… 👽💍
😊hi josh
Hey Josh, I’d love to see an intermediate course and I’m willing to pay for it!
Hi Josh. Are you using flatwound strings? 🤔
I like having videos to recommend to people about basics! And your walking dude plucking demo was always a great example, but I couldn't always remember which video it was on, so it's nice to see it here! Seriously great job, I like how you managed to pack in so many useful points without it feeling like an infodump
I've tried learning the guitar but my left hand (I'm right handed) is messed up from martial arts training (first time I blocked a kick I did so with an open relaxed hand and now my pinky works in mysterious ways).
I think that bass might be more up my alley. I have a good sense of rythm and usually when I am tapping my fingers along with music it's the rythm section that I follow along with.
Before the guitarists reading this say that I just need to stretch my hand more and it comes with practice, let me just mansplain my condition. I hyper extended the tendons and damaged the joints in my pinky finger, when I try to extend my pinky and use it for the fret board for more than 7-10 minutes I experience excruciating pain causing my hand to cramp up and if I am holding something I won't be able to let go for a few minutes.
I tried plucking a bass a friend of mine has and it was fairly easy and did not put strain on my left hand as much.
What is a good beginner bass?
Do I need an amplier made for the bass or can I use any electric guitar amp?
I have the Fender electric guitar starter kit with the amp and I am asking because no one in Iceland will buy it used and I am thinking of recycling it somehow.
I really enjoy your videos, you have improved my technique immensely! Thanks, and keep em coming!
Thanks Ken!
I bought my first bass at the beginning of this week and this video is incredibly helpful !

If you had time, it would be cool if you had 2 channels..... 1 for beginner's (Bass Buzz) and 2 another for Intermediate/Advanced ( Bass Buzzed). Then you'd get twice the views and audience at least I would think. And it would be dope
Actually he does have a channel for intermediate to advanced. It is named after him. Look up Josh Fossgreen.

SUBSCRIBED. I am a newbie. Following your advice I am letting a pro, at a local music store, set it up PROPERLY.
