  • The dominant function of the INFJ and INTJ personality types, Introverted Intuition is likely the most searched of all the cognitive functions.
Commonly seen as more interesting or 'deep' than the other functions, in this video I look at what Introverted Intuition is doing at the core and why it is not necessarily any more interesting than the others.
Thanks to Kiara Kerrick for the subtitles!

    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

Ni: the woo woo function Se: the woop woop function

You're right, Ni definitely isn't the more "scientific" of the two. As a Ni dom, I often find myself making assumptions and leaps of reasoning and generalizing based on passive observation and hazy "vibes" (i.e. fairly little hard evidence), and yes, I nearly always take the shortcut. Si doms are the ones who have the naturally detail-oriented, meticulous and methodical approach that fits far better with the "scientific" descriptor.

in short Ni is the mind trying to guide the user to the easiest and fastest path the user is looking for.

Over 10 years, and this is the first time I’ve actually understood Ni.

I think this video is wrong about Ni in several ways. It is absolutely capable of more insight than Si. Yes, each function needs use of other functions, but it’s the level of ability and development of the functions which gives superior or inferior cognitive abilities. Hence most philosophers have been Ni dominant and not Si dominant is just one example.

The concept of Si dip on an INTJ/INFJ is really not recognized by the MBTI system. They both have Inferior Se, not Si. The concept of shadow functions are not acknowledged or explored in MBTI. What did Carl Jung write about the shadow functions?

Ni is simply data analysis. It’s the slow analysis of lots of Se data taken in in real time.

it makes so much sense to combine Si and Ni in the workings of the mind, Se and Ni always seemed to me as if there is something missing in the equation.

Hi, I think we have similar views of Ni. This is how I categorized the functions.

The best way I'd describe Introverted Intution, and perception functions in general, is:

I've always used the example of a supernova vs a black hole.

Thank you for debunking the terrible stereotypes of Ni vs Si. I've researched a ton on the internet and found I fit both descriptions in some levels. Most people use Ne, Ni, Se, Si, just to different degrees. This video described the Ni Si continuum very well.

thank you, I needed this. Laziness has been my biggest problem, and it can be SO easy to give into "short-cuts" with pre-mature generalizations/out-of-reality conclusions. This is especially easy when you have a higher functioning Ni-Fe (infj) where you think you know everything about people when in fact you dont... and assumed conclusions HAVE to be challenged - wow this can be difficult but it's so needed. High functioning Ni can be a gateway for valuable wisdom or great naivety. When I don't want to be conscious of my life, be it heart-break or the pain of healing, it can be so easy to forget about learning and exercising of Ni. And so easy to believe a false conclusion without Si-ing again to refine it. Appreciate the work.

Your descriptions of introverted intuition always make the most sense. Starting with a wide lense has it's good points but it takes me a ridiculously long time to narrow down sometimes. Once I have good luck budging me from that perspective lol

Your explanation is the best I've seen. Perfect description of normal Ni. But in my opinion, your explanation doesn't go far enough to explain the "woo woo."

I agree with you on the fact that for me predict a pattern I have to first through it or relate it to something that I have experienced in the past. So Ni is no superpower just good at recognizing patterns the individual goes through.

Thank you for your continued work to bring clarity. It's great to have someone that can break this down.
