    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

I’ve been down the MBTI rabbit hole for a couple months now (not long, I know) and Harry’s understanding of the cognitive functions and MBTI types seems to be by far the most comprehensive.
Other descriptions and videos I’ve come across fail to explain the inner workings of MBTI, and in doing so, also represent the types in a very crude light, with others being downright inaccurate and full of contradiction.
I was beginning to think that everyone I knew (myself included) was mistyped, until I listened to Harry’s descriptions which totally brought things full circle and illuminated the lesser known aspects of each type.
Very impressed with this channel and highly recommend a deep dive for those interested in MBTI.

I very much relate to your description of Ne-Fe divergence. When I go to any social event where I am not compulsed to interact, I find it more enjoyable to observe the emotional atmosphere at a macro scale. Thinking about it, letting it inspire thoughts, allowing myself to draw conclusions on the nature and psychology of social interactions and customs. I've consistently done this throughout my life. In my book this certainly gives more credence to your theory.

And, do you ever just make up stories about the people based on their looks and seeming interactions? If you haven't, I suggest you start. It's great fun! And, so I am not misunderstood by anyone reading this, I am not advocating mocking sort of stories. Just stories.

This perfects explains the differences of two personalities with only the extravert/introvert differences.
Take my example: INTJ and ENTJ may look very similar, but INTJ tends to be less opinionated than ENTJ; ENTJ tends to make a decision first, strategize later, INTJ strategizes first, make a decision later. The convergence and divergence of their function stack positions explain the reasons behind these phenomena perfectly.

I’m INFP and have an ISTJ family member. With the ISTJ, I’ve seen him adapt to life changes and his role in the family. And I used to think INFP really know themselves, but what you described makes more sense; I expect that I must know myself really well with all the time and introspection of done, but realizing that the whole reason I spend so much time is because I’m still learning who I am and it shifts over time; I don’t think someone with a static sense of self would be constantly researching who they are, they would just know it as a fact and not second-guess.

I didn't knew this concept of convergent-divergent functions despite 2 years among MBTI communities. Thanks for this briliant insight ! It offer a very decisive understanding of, for instance, the difference between an Fe-dom & an Fe-aux. I already felt there was a qualitative (and not only quantitative) difference between, say, an ESFJ and ISFJ, but couldn't formulate this difference.

Hello, I've been watching your videos for a while now. And I really loved the whole Convergent and Divergent concept. Would this be more akin to how Jung described the cognitive stack, having the consciousness of an introvert as being both introverted functions (a Dominant with it's auxiliary), while the unconscious having two extraverted functions (the Inferior with it's own auxiliary) and vice versa? That would make for example the INFJ have a concious Ni>Ti, while having an unconcious Se>Fe. One could first think that the consciousness (convergent) is easier to observe in oneself, but you are here saying its the other way around, and the unconscious (divergent) is the observable one.
I think the way you explain it actually makes more sense, where the conscious is for ever being acted upon (at least while awake), the unconscious acts involuntarily and therefore one cannot take responsibility for it, which would make it more observable, as if it was another person within ourselves that did it.
Also I've heard that our dip functions are totally subconscious, don't know who said it originally though. Do you think that in our sleep the dip functions are totally awake? And when we are awake, wouldn't that mean that when our regular functions dip into our subconscious functions, that we are bringing our subconscious into cognition? That is when our subconscious is most functional, it's strength directly proportional to how deep our main functions dip into our subconscious ones (?)

    • @CognitivePersonalityTheory
      @CognitivePersonalityTheory  3 роки тому +3

Thanks for this comment! Yes this was very much derived from Jung in that respect :)
Where I divergence is the differentiation between consciousness - Jungian consciousness seemed to pertain more to egoistic relation than awareness, as our divergent functions are less egoistically related to but actually more observable as a result.
We are limited to introverted functions during sleep, although they may be inspired by a greater relation to extraverted functions in a fantastical sense.
I liken subconsciousness to automation; those dips that occur non-volitionally will likely be more subconscious, but volitional dipping will often be fully conscious :)

    • @Tified967

You wouldn't take FeNe for granted as an INTP as it's the backbone if you will of your cognition. Important to note you used 'NeFe' but rather its 'FeNe' for the INTP.

    • @CognitivePersonalityTheory

Hi! Convergence locks in to something as an extension of desire - it controls as it the self 'converges' into the locus in question. Divergence observes more than controls, as reality here is divergent, and thus open, and thus outside of the lock brought about by desire :)

So the realm of change is convergence in CPT and contact functions in Socionics? And the realm of observation is divergence in CPT and inert functions in Socionics? Can this justify a correlation between a type in CPT and its functional opposite in Socionics, i.e. INTJ -> ESFp? I know they are two quite different systems; just a thought experiment.

If I may ask, what level of agreement do you have with the common assessment I see given where if you are always uncertain about being INFJ, that you are in fact an INFP instead? I mean there are times when I truly think I relate strongest to the traits of the INFJ, but I always have that itch that I might be wrong due to the nature of how common it is for people to mistype themselves, and as much as I know I should not cave in to what everyone and anyone says on the internet, mistyping oneself as the INFJ seems like the most commonplace misstep that I would like to avoid if I can be certain. A little egoistic reasoning, but I suppose I cannot help it lol. So I am not asking for you to type me since I know that falls under your service, but rather your stance on this particular concept.

Honestly, these two types (particularly the INFJ) are so misrepresented that uncertainty on either side is not only likely, but reasonable. I've typed INFPs who wonder if they're INFJs, and INFJs who wonder if they're INFPs - Ni tends to be conflated with Fi in popular descriptions, and the J vs P dichotomy sowes even more confusion!

The authority function has a significant influence on its opposite orientation - INFJs (NiFe) use plenty of Fi too. In some ways I even consider this the 'target function', as it longs to be integrated with the dominant and brought into the same attitude (as opposed to its usual divergent state).
So 1) as a sub-authority function (Ti must be abided by in said type) and 2) as a target function to be integrated with the dominant, and in some senses the bridge by which opposing and dominant functions can be reconciled.

INFJ/ESFP more conceptual & ISTP/ENFJ more theoretical. Yes, ISFJ/INTP more analytical. Of course these are just predispositions. I'm highly theoretical & analytical for instance. Not that you implied this but I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking that ESFPs aren't conceptual & ENFJs aren't theoretical as after all like take the ENFJ for example, the ENFJ is still synthesising & conglomerating their Ni in order to bring it into alignment with their Ti - they'll be consulting a range of abstract theories & synthesising these convergently to come up with their own universal theorems of everything. It's not that they don't tinker with their TiNi, it's just not tinkered with as often (unless you're a divergent subtype of course). Unless one lives in a vacuum & isn't exposed to new information there's always going to be a degree of convergence going on.

I feel you. I found this out from other books on the subject so I can make some sense of all this, but it's quite a long explanation - e.g. for ESFJ the order by strength of functions is Fe, Si, Ne, Ti; and so the convergent pair is Fe-Ne and the divergent (weaker) pair is Si-Ti.
      .
Using this pattern you can find the order of strength of the 4 functions in each type, and their orientations, based on the types he assigns to each pair in the previous video, and to the convergent and divergent pairs in this video.
      .
The convergent pair is always the strongest and 3rd strongest function, the divergent pair the 2nd and 4th.

@@Tified967 Yes in a sense the more subconscious functions are not weaker. But there's no rationale here I can identify for determining which functions are intro/extro and which ones take a back seat in our conscious awareness, and the MBTI rationale gives the same results apparently taken for granted (and very nicely expanded upon!) here.
