as a video editor constantly switching between folders, this is very useful. Thank you
You're welcome! 😀
i feel soooo old when i learn that kind of tricks but the tab to rename another files will change my life, thx
Thank you, Jon. Shift + Tab is a great shortcut to know. I was not aware of that functionality in Windows File Explorer.
Thanks Gil! I recently learned that one and it seems to help me use more shortcuts with Explorer since I start the session with the keyboard instead of the mouse.
I love File Explorer and now love the new shortcuts! Thanks so much Jon! Eventually, all the seconds saved will into hours saved 🙂
Thank you Jon, My favorite short cut key learned in this lesson is Ctrl+Shift+2 to Ctrl+Shift+6
Thank you Jon, for the well selected and well explained keyboard shortcuts you just shared. Shift+Ctrl+N is my favorite, which is part of the video.
Thanks for your support, Shiffa! 👍
Gr8 shortcuts Jon! Thank you!
Awesome help video! I needed, found with your video, and now love the F2 shortcut to rename files. Used it to rename a whole folder full of files I had misnumbered. Thanks! :)
Thanks Jon for Shift:tab , down-arrow , tab reminder.
I've picked up the bad habit of using F6 to move from panel to panel, when tab is so much easier.
Thank you for sharing, really helping a lot
Thanks Jon for the shortcuts. They're all useful tips, however my new favorite is Ctrl+Shift+1-6 and Ctrl+N. Thx
Thanks for sharing your favorite @jaronjackson6913! 😀
Ctl-Shift-6 is pretty cool. As is Shift-Tab and Tab to set focus to navig. pane or contents pane.
Helpful - thank you!
Hi John
F2 followed by Tab rather than Enter is a new one for me, and one to (try to) remember. Good stuff 👌
Thanks Henry! 🙌
@@ExcelCampus Same here. thank you
Now using it all the time - game changer! How could I not have know it? Thanks again John
Excellent 👏🏼, Thank You 🙏🏻
Thanks John! 🙌
Super handy. My favorite channel.
Hi John - Thank you! Almost half of your tips I didn't know. In particular, excited about Shift+Ctrl+N. Another great video - thank you!
Thanks Selwonger!
great tutorial
F2 & Tab to rename multiple files is awesome thanks!
Thanks Rob! 🙌
Absolutely amazing video Jon. 👏 very insightful
Thanks for the nice feedback, Nader! 😊
Hi John, thank you, most of the shortcuts are new for me.
Thanks Gandhi! Happy to hear you learned some new ones.👍
Thanks very much!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! 😀
Thank you sir.....
Hi Jone, Many thanks for some more updates, Its really helpful. For start bottom i am using Microsoft logo bottom .
Thanks Madhav! 👍
great job man really helpful
Thank you for your feedback! 😀
Thanks Jon. Ctrl + N is new to me.
Another way to create a folder is Right click > W > F (don't have to hold these), way faster and more ergonomic 😂
or text file (notepad) by Right click > W > T
all of them are, thanks man
I didn't know about "Shift + Tab" to get to the Quick Access pane right away, thanks for that! 🙏🏽
Recently I discovered an app by Microsoft called "PowerToys", which has very cool features (and some gimmicks), such as changing multiple files names, but the best feature is remapping keys and shortcuts. For example, some people would be thrilled to deactivate the "Caps Lock" button, or change the unnecessary "Insert" to "Browser Back" in order to navigate easily.
Please do a video review for that app! I'm sure many users would find that super helpful. 😃
Thanks. One more short cut to copy a file is Ctrl clik + drag and drop
thank you for this useful video
Glad it was helpful! 😀
shift f10 and menu
shift tab
these i found the most useful of all
Omg there is so much I don’t know! cntrl N even is so helpful
Thanks for the tips! Another one: Window + L to lock the computer - I use it all the time!
Great tip, Valerie! I use that one often too. 🔒
Thanks for sharing, it was a very useful video. Nowadays, I really enjoy your videos. Also, I want to share two shorcuts, the first one is ALT + P, you need to select a file and then hold ALT + P, you will notice a new window appears on the right, It shows you an image. And the other is ALT + SHIFT + P, a new window will appear on the right, It will show you a brief detail.
I love your additions, especially ALT + SHIFT + P!
That Alt+D shortcut will be well used. Thanks!
You're welcome! 😀
Thanks Jon, Tab key is useful in explorer
What about searching files containing specific words
Thank you Jon u save my today because I forget mouse so
Thank you Jon for sharing all these shortcuts. I have a question
" Is there anyway to open file explorer in full screen mode (maximized)? For example when you opened file explorer at 0:18 it is in minimized mode. I want this in maximized mode all the time I open."
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. A quick question - is there a way to open two file explorer views that change in real time, that is, if I used Control+N to open similar view file explorer, and then I select a specific folder (or sub-folder, or sub-sub folder) in the first view, the second explorer view also mirrors the folder selections made in the first view. Thanks,
Thanks for the video John. A question: is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut to launch a program defined in the "Send to" menu, on the current file of File Explorer?
You can add
Microsoft +d
Alt +tab ( my fav )
Thanks a lot, I didn't know Ctrl+shit+6.
You forgot however to mention my favorite win 10 shortcut, which is alt+3. This copies the full path of a selected item. You have to activate the shortcut first. Click Home > right click Copy Path then Add to Quick access. You can now use alt+3. The main reason, I haven't switched to win 11 yet is, that I could not find it there
hello sir, loved your video it was helpful.
although I have a question, do you know how to change these shortcuts or assign new ones ?
Also I was unaware of tabbing after F2 to rename. That's handy, though I offer use MS's own PowerRename to rename multiple files if they'll be similar.
Also, I like to use Ctrl-plus. That makes the column just wide enough to show all the contents.
Another one that I use that you didn't mention is Alt-P to toggle file preview. I usually turn it back off once I'm done since it slows down the rate with which I can change the file selection with the up/down arrow keys.
F2 with tabbing is the bomb right !!!!
I reckon I use the Windows+E and cntr+shift+6 alot.
Thanks
Awesome! Thanks Greg! 🙂
When renaming multiple images of the same object I just highlight all of them using the shift + arrow keys and then use F2 to rename them all together.
What is the shortcut for Open file location?
John, do you know a key board command to enlarge a Windows Explorer window (W7) when it always opens up as a small window?
One more question,😊 if I may - is it possible to sort files in windows file explorer on more than one column (fields), as in folder, and then date modified and then name. Like they way, one can select multiple sort keys in Excel. Thanks.
Shift F10💯
f2 is very helpful considering windows explorer doesnt have a feature to mark files so the easiest way is just to rename them
Hi John !
Very nice content, congratulations. As an Office trainer, I always show the exact same shortcuts, except for the shift + tab which I didn't know and I want to thank you for that.
One necessary thing is to avoid "merge and center", and to use the "center Across selection" option. Is there a shortcut for this ? I've been looking for it since a long time and always failed to find.
Cheers from France !
That's Excel, and there are no DIRECT shortcuts, but my many years of Excelling have taught me the following sequence for when I've opened a new file:
Ctrl-A to select all, then Alt-H, M, U. That will eliminate all merges.
To do the centering, I select the cells in question, and use Ctrl-1, Ctrl-PageDwn, Alt-H, End, up-arrow, Enter, Enter.
That sounds like a lot but It's actually easier done than said, so to speak. Especially once you're used to it.
Just remember the Ctrl-PgDown won't be necessary on subsequent uses since the Format Cells dialog box remembers which panel you were on.
Hello sir, with Shift + F10 only uncondensed menu is opening, Any other alternative for condensed Menu options ??
Windows key + "V" = clipboard history.
TAB to rename multiple files
Hi, I have a user who complains that her File Explorer windows close constantly; I've reimaged her machine and she continues to have this issue, so it appears that it's user error from where I'm sitting. Is there a key combination that causes all of these windows to close? I'm aware that Win+D causes them to be minimized.
Hi Jon, I noticed you discussed the left/right/up arrows but did not speak about the 'down button' located in between the up arrow and left/right arrows. Mine is missing that down button on W11 v22H2. Do you know what it is, what's is used for, and how to get to reappear. Thanks!
From what I can find, Alt+↓ has no function in Windows File Explorer. In Excel, Alt+↓ opens the AutoComplete dropdown list.
Thanks for the video!
Off the top of my head, Related Queries:
Q. 1 When searching within folders, after typing the query and pressing Enter, the view changes from detailed view to a non-desirable one as was also evident in your video. How to make it never change it from detailed view when doing searches.
Q. 2 When hitting F12 in say an excel file to save it for a second time in succession, the save dialog box again does not adhere to detailed view and opens each folder in a different view (similar to Q. 1). How to also make save dialog box to strictly follow detailed view in F12 saves?
Q. 3 I want to sort particular folders by recent. However, my global setting is sort in ascending order by Names. How to achieve that and make File Explorer remember that?
Q. 4 One drive file renaming in quick succession is not possible as it keeps uploading in background and while one is trying to rename next file, it selects/deselects filename in-between that. Is there a fix for this yet?
Hi Abhinav,
Great questions! Here are my answers.
1. After performing a search, you can change the view to Details on the View dropdown (or use Ctrl+Shift+6). Windows 11 seems to remember this view choice for the next time you search. And even when you close and re-open Explorer. I'm not sure if Windows 10 does the same.
2. Same with the Save As window in Excel. There is a View button in the top right corner of the window where you can change the view. Mine always defaults to Details, so I don't think this reverts back.
3. File Explorer should remember the sort order for the specific folders. I'm not sure what the memory or cache looks like on that. It might not remember them after you restart your computer. You might want to do some research on that.
4. I don't experience this issue. The F2+Tab to rename works for me with a OneDrive folder. It might depend on your connection speed and how fast you are renaming the files.
I hope that helps. Thanks again and have a nice weekend! 🙂
@@ExcelCampus Thanks for the reply. Though i have found these issues plaguing me and similar queries on windows forums, they seem to be causing issues to low number of users. Its good to hear some don't occur in Windows 11.
F4 to repeat last action is one I strangely had never used but will be super helpful going forward. Also, I know this is not a video on formulas but it is the most recent video so.. I have a workbook with 100+ sheets. I need to grab the bottom number (which contains the current balance) from a certain column of every sheet to include that balance in a report. Any ideas on how I can do this?
Hey Stephanie, Great question! I assume that the bottom number is not in the same row on every sheet? If that's the case, one possible solution for this is Power Query. You could combine the data from all of the sheets/tables into one long table, then filter for the bottom row only. The bottom row would need to have a column with a unique identifier. Something like the word "Total" in each bottom row. This would give you a list of sheet names in one column and the "bottom number" value in another column.
If you wanted a formula based approach you could also use the new VSTACK and FILTER functions to do something similar.
Lookup formulas like Vlookup or Xlookup would work too, it would just be a lot more setup work for each sheet.
And finally, you could use a macro for this.
As with everything in Excel, there are a lot of options. 😁 I'll add this to our list for future videos.
I hope that helps. Thanks again and have a nice weekend! 🙂
I don't think its easy to reply to your question with such a general statement. You didn't specify whether the number of sheets are constant, is the workbook generated frequently afresh or additional data added manually in that workbook only, names of sheets same/different, where's the report etc.
@@ExcelCampus I've considered a few of these but will look into the ones I had not yet considered. This is a good start, thank-you! I appreciate your comment. A future video on this would be much appreciated as well!
We also have a community forum inside our Elevate Excel Training Program where members can post questions with sample files, images, and/or screencast videos. I know it can be tough to explain all the nuances of a project/task with text, so we have options for those other media types. In the program, I also do a live monthly Q&A meeting to answer members questions and walk through solutions.
You can learn more about the program at www.excelcampus.com/elevate-excel-invite/
@@Rogue-Bull It is difficult to include all the details in a UA-cam comment. Sheets are often being added to my workbook, additional entries to several sheets are posted daily. Each sheet is named by number, but not in sequence as they are account numbers. It would be ideal for me if the reported data could be in the first sheet of the workbook or in a separate workbook used just to track these.
Also, the bottom number is not on the same row on every sheet. It varies depending on the volume of transactions for each account (so each sheet).
Windows 11 - Quick Access is not showing on the Left SidePane. Instead is showing. Any ideas?
